Premier Guitar’s Perry Bean yacks with Nada Surf founder Matthew Caws and Doug Gillard-also of Guided by Voices-before their Nashville show at the Mercy Lounge.
Caws’ main axe is this Edwards “lawsuit” Les Paul that was made in Japan. The word is that Edwards, a subsidiary of ESP, made this incredibly light guitar so close in construction and aesthetics to a Gibson Les Paul that it can’t legally be sold in the U.S. The Edwards features replicas of Gibson Burstbucker pickups and Caws keeps it strung with a set of beefy D'Addario .012 gauge strings.
Gillard lets the song dictate which of his classic Gibsons he plays. Currently, Gillard tours with three Kalamazoo-era guitars and one of his favorites is this 1973 Les Paul Standard with 490R/490T humbuckers that he’s owned since he was 18.

Damn, way back in 95 or 96, during a meet & greet in France, I asked Matthew if they needed another guitar player. He said no (duh). And now they got one. I guess I was 20 years too early =)
YES. one of the most underrated bands out there
Daniel Bui They should be more POPULAR. I'm sorry.
Matthew is such a cool guy. I love that Nada Surf is still going so strong after all this time.
I have an absolute man crush on Matthew Caws. Such an immensely talented songwriter and just a cool guy.
Great guys! Great band! I was working at a Movie Trailer production company in L.A. and I guess for promotional reasons, Nada Surf quite literally gave us a private concert on a really nice small outdoor patio! I think there were about 15-20 of us watching them play. They played my request "Always Love," one of my favorite songs from ANY band, and they were SUPER nice and very friendly.
Wish all rig rundowns were like this. Great work by Perry as always and Matthew was super cool and polite.
One of my favorite bands! They put on a great live show too.
saw them in bilbao in May, just a samall gig about 200 people, and man it was great!!!
I like to see more bass rigs when you do these Rig Rundown. Even if the rig simple we, bassist like to see the bassist rigs as well
Matthew and Doug. Nada Surf and GBV. So much love!
Daniel lorca is such a huge bassist, it's criminal not to check his rig, i''ve been so curious about his old p bass... damn.
Miss you, Matthew! That Great Nada Surf Sound!
Very cool, great band!!!
I'm not a huge fan of their music but this was one of the most enjoyable Rig Rundowns I've seen. Super nice guys and chill as heck.
I live in Tokyo. Edwards guitars usually have Seymour Duncans in them. Quite often it's the SH-4 JB in the bridge and SH-2n Jazz in the neck but that differs depending on the guitar. Anyway, there's a high chance that the Les Paul in this Rig Rundown also has Duncans in it.
Man I love cranking amps amd rolling the volume on the guitar back. Sounds great
Good to see this! Their latest album is really good.
Always good to see a les paul knock off in a rundown
Its so nice to see that some of my dearest heroes are actually really nice guys
YES!!! Nada Surf is SO GOOD!!! Thank YOU!
This interviewer is getting better
I come from the future and no, no he's still the same.
Liam Gallagher I swear TF to God I was just thinking of writing in the comment section “OASIS!” for NO APPARENT REASON...... 😳😳😳
Hes always been one of the greatest interviewers in history of guitar
PLEASE do a rig rundown of THE LIBERTINES! :D PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
so jealous perry! love these guys.
It’s funny to me how people are always surprised that Doug Gillard uses a Dual Rec. It’s really sad that most people seem to think that Recs are only for high gain crap. Recs have the most amazing clean to mild breakup tone, just like all Mesa’s. It’s even more sparkly and “chimey” than a Fender, pretty hi-fi sounding. Robert Pollard and Doug Gillard are masters at getting really Fendery tones with Gibson guitars, and part of that is using high headroom, super clean amps. The Dual Rec clean channel is just that, and it sucks that they aren’t thought of more in that light. Listen to the GBV album Isolation Drills. Doug’s 70’s black beauty through his Dual Rec shines on that album so much.
Been trying to be cool ever since high school cool like the stars and sexy people at bars.... love Nada Surf
I like my Bacchus BLP classic. Also resonant as hell. True story - Saw Matt Caws on the subway in NYC once, looked like he was nervous on his way to a date. I didn't want to say anything but threw on Hyperspace the old ipod back then.. cool moment to self. But yeah my Bacchus needed real hand wound pickups. Put Sigil hand wound PAF. CTS 500k pots, PIO caps vintage... Dr. Z amp with built in attenuation though. I have a hot plate sitting in a box I found it really squashes my tone.
a guitar world journalist ... no wonder he knows his stuff .. awesome
Don't really know their music but they seem like really cool people. Gotta check them out
Please do a rundown on the record company if possible!
what a smart guy!
12 gauge!! I use 7s (admittedly that is light but if it's good enough for BB King and \ZZTop it good enough for me. Anyway I only recently dicovered this band and I love 'em.
Sum 41 rig rundown, please??
Is the Edwards guitar a 125SD?
It'd be great if you do a Ryan Bingham's Rig Rundown. That guy has just an amazing gear!!!
nice!
FYI: Edwards LPs have Duncans from the factory.
Hmmm. It's my understanding that the only true "lawsuit" guitars are the 70's Ibanez Les Pauls because they were the only company to actually be sued by Gibson. The other copies are just "(insert brand name) Les Paul"
Popular!
It's funny that he credits AC/DC tone for being clear and then says he'd rather use an attenuator than the guitar volume because it "loses" something-yet Angus has his volume rolled back for that tone.
/essay
True. But Angus also plugged into like 6 heads
The best.
Of mice and men rig rundown please!
Well at least they are playing thru actual amps.

Yeah, I just break out this $15,000 330 for one song. It's no big deal.
he played strange chords : ) he is great
please do Richie Sambora and Orianthi while they're touring together... 2 for the price of one!
THAT WOULD BE COOL BUT I BET I CAN GUESS THE BASICS OF BOTH RIGS, RICHIE - HSS TOBACCO BURST STRAT, LES PAUL, HIS SIG FENDER(DONT KNOW THE NAME BUT ITS NOT LIKE A TYPICAL FENDER) ORIANTHI-HER SIG PRS GUITARS, PRS ARCHON AMPS(LAST I SAW SHE SWITCHED TO THEM FROM THE 5150III
Bad Religion Rig rundown, for the love of god
We'd love that but they didn't hit Nashville on their last tour. Next time we hope!!
MAN THE NAME OF THE BAND SOUNDS SO FAMILIAR FOR SOME REASON, DID THEY HAVE ANY BIG HIT SONGS BACK IN THE LATE 90'S TO EARLY 2000'S? DUNNO WHY THAT TIME FRAME CAME TO MIND BUT I SWEAR I'VE HEARD THEIR NAME BEFORE
YOU DONT HAVE TO YELL!
They have many great songs but the song from the 90s youre probably thinking of is 'Popular'
Can't believe these guys were on the rock boat. didn't fit in.
he has very high end guitar gear
I cant believe they wont play popular at their shows.
Agreed. I already play the same songs every show and no one cares about my bands. I wish i had even just one hit song like these humans haha
perhaps they should go back to playing basements like me to gain perspective
that's...not...true? i've definitely seen them play that song live a couple times
campbelltron I sure hope so!!
Really? A bunch of years ago when I went they said they would never play Popular and got pissed at people for asking for it. Here is an article "Nada Surf recently played NYC shows at Webster Hall (4/7) and Music Hall of Williamsburg (4/8). They didn’t play “Popular” at either gig.

They just played it last week in DC during the encore and I've seen them play it a few times over the years. I think it goes in and out of the set, like many songs.
no bass/daniel lorca, no good :(
I miss President Trump
do either of these know what they are talking about? either its a new edwards or an early eighties 'law suit era' guitar. they dont know what they are talking about.
