    I'm from Australia and I review a lot of physical releases from our various labels, which despite a significantly smaller market and limited resources, do a decent job. However, it's often a case of taking what they can get, which at the moment is mainly back-catalogue titles from Universal and Paramount, who seem to be very generous with licencing. Imprint are definitely making the most of it by being a lot more selective. I covered their first wave and so far their latest titles are living up to expectations. Night Falls on Manhattan was amazing, the film and its release. I'm glad to see the label is getting some much deserved international attention and I appreciate your in-depth coverage.

    Hi Heath! These Imprint titles look AMAZING! When I went to their website I got sticker shock. After realizing these are Australian prices I decided to order When World Collide because it is such a great movie that I have had for years on DVD and really wanted it on blu-ray. Still it cost me a little over $40 ($30 for the movie, $10 for the shipping). A bit more than what I would usually spend on a single blu-ray title, but not totally outrageous. Especially when you consider it's going for $120 on Ebay, and 3 had already been sold! And as always Heath I gave Via Vision a big shout out for you & Cereal at Midnight for turning me on to their label.

      I'm glad you got one, Tom! While I know that's more than we are used to paying, ten dollars for shipping from Australia is actually not too bad. Hopefully more North American retailers begin carrying these discs. New titles will be announced in just a couple of days, and DiabolikDVD should have them when they become available in October, but they won't last long.

    I got the Duellists from the first wave. Its one of my fav movies, but the Spanish edition I had was only a db25 and you could see the compression when upscaling to 4k. The Region A was selling for a lot, so I was delighted when Imprint released a db50 with a slipcase for a much more reasonable price.

    Your enthusiasm is truly infectious (though using the word infectious these days might not be the right turn of phrase!) Makes me so much wish I had a) more money and b) a way bigger place to live as from day one here in the UK I've wanted to collect ALL of the Arrow titles... Keep up the great work Heath, you're one of the very best! :)

      Thanks, Richard. Infectious indeed, haha! Yeah, there's just so much stuff coming out right now, I've really never seen anything quite like it. I've been a fan of this stuff for so long, but I can't remember there EVER being a market that catered to the fandom like we're seeing right now. @@CerealAtMidnight if they can keep these up they could become the Australian "Indicator". Criterion is at this point probably pushing it but they do remind me a lot of indicator so far. The only thing they are lacking are those nice booklets which I know are expensive. Hopefully if they do well and take off they will be able to start doing those as well. I do love a good booklet! But it is exciting they are also doing TV as well as cinema. For those who are also interested in the Hammer stuff im sure Diabolik will have it but can also buy direct: viavision.com.au/shop/hammer-house-of-horror-the-complete-series-1980-2/

    Great video! I'm interested in these, but holding off right now. Hopefully, they will repress their early releases.
    George Peppard was a good actor in the day. I'm not a huge fan of THE BLUE MAX, but a lot of people are (including Peter Jackson). He was excellent in BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S. I haven't seen HOME FROM THE HILL in a long time, and I remember it as an ok movie. However, there is a lovely scene in a cafe where Peppard is talking to a girl that his brother got pregnant.
    Alan Ladd was around 50 years old when he made THE CARPETBAGGERS. It's interesting to compare his worn appearance to modern actors such as Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt who are currently over five years older, but look much younger than Ladd (or Garfield, Bogart or Tracy). Alcohol played a part, but it definitely brings a melancholy or tragic feel to their later performances.
    George Segal was good to great in a lot of 60's and 70's movies. I'm interested in what you think of THE QUILLER MEMORANDUM, where he gives an effective, low key performance in a low key movie.
    A PLACE IN THE SUN is my favorite movie of the batch. The scene where Montgomery Clift (pre-accident) is languidly kissing an incredibly beautiful Liz Taylor is rivalled only by the scene in NOTORIOUS.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  3 роки тому +1

      Great point about Alan Ladd. He really does look like he's pushing seventy, and you can tell he'd been living hard. He was only 35 when he starred in Whispering Smith (the movie, not the TV show) and he looks like a grizzled veteran in that. I guess it's worth noting that The Carpetbaggers was his last film and he had already died when it was released, which would have cast a shadow over the audiences seeing it at the time. It's a great performance, though. He went out on a high note, in terms of his acting.

    I’m 100% guilty of celebrating the off the wall oddities. It’s become part of my daily routine. I wake up, eat a bowl of cereal that looks strangely like Corn Flakes but the box is turned at the “We don’t have Kellogg money” degree, have a conversation with my wife that consists of sentences no living human would say naturally, get in my rig and vanquish some evil in Chinatown, look for my father who has been overrun by zombies on a remote island he was doing research at, save my sister from a a post apocalyptic gang that can’t decide if they are Mad Max fans or Warriors fans, and then be back in time to hit the drive-in, but I don’t have much money which is okay cause I just claim unemployed and get in cheaper. Shouldn’t be an issue in the end.
    What these guys are doing with Imprint is phenomenal. I enjoy my B movies and my oddball cult favorites, but discussing fantastic movies (genuinely fantastic, award winning films) isn’t as prominent outside the Criterion circle. The greater circle is celebrating the films that bought Fringe real estate in Fringeville. Now I LIVE for films like that but i do enjoy watching exceptionally made films because we learn the most from them. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I haven’t watched Orb Origins in two days now and I’m starting to itch really bad.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  3 роки тому

      I love that stuff too, and I've been the guy championing the drive-in cinema for a long time. But now...isn't it weird that most of UA-cam's movie collecting channels are so obsessed with fringe cinema that the genuine classics, studio pictures, and award winners have become the NEW fringe cinema in a culture that almost exclusively celebrates horror and drive-in movies? I'm always looking for ways to stand out against the pack, and it's so bizarre to me that talking about genuinely great movies is going against the grain. Yet here we are. I'm seeing more and more fringe burnout, too. A diet that consists almost entirely of candy is going to lead to some overall health problems, and I think this is no different. The thing that makes candy taste so good is that it's a departure from a normal balanced meal. Well, between your corn flakes and my food talk, now I'm hungry. I'm going to eat a Snickers bar.

      They were $27.99 through Diabolik before they sold out, and are currently $25 through ViaVision's own website, after currency conversion. Shipping from Australia can be high, but I can't imagine them being able to sell them much lower and still turn a profit. That's pretty much the going rate for these smaller, independent labels, both in the U.S. and abroad.

    • @darrenblizzard3851

      Welcome to how it is for us collectors over in Australia always 😜. Not only do we have to contend with crazy shipping prices and our government now forcing GST even onto online purchases, we also have to contend with the Aussie dollar against the US dollar, UK pound and Euro - and we are worse off in all of those examples! I get they are expensive and even for me here in Australia ordering them within the country they are not cheap but they are very nice and I'm glad to have a local label to support. Any concerns you have about price believe me it's even worse here in Australia for us Aussie collectors as Amazon UK and US won't ship direct here at the moment, and most US labels like Shout and Kino etc have never shipped here (the UK labels are a bit better in that regard and I can order direct from Powerhouse Films, Arrow UK and Eureka etc). We can use Diabolik DVD or Shipito but the postage on these are huge!!!! Sadly as boutique collectors we have to put our money where our mouths are and it's not a cheap hobby by any stretch of the imagination! I get where you are coming from but I really hope many people do pick them up and give them support so they can grow and succeed! Cheers!

    • @JosephKissSr
      @JosephKissSr 3 роки тому +2

      Darren Blizzard I definitely feel bad for overseas collectors. You guys get hosed. Same with guys like Aaron Pynn who lives in Canada. Shipping rates are obscene. That’s why I think labels should be a little more understanding of that. I totally get that they have their own costs to release these films but I also think they are losing business based on their pricing. I used to buy practically every Scream Factory release until they started jacking the price up to $27.99. Now I am EXTREMELY selective. Same with the other boutique labels and major studios that have been jacking up their own prices. It used to be that a brand new studio bluray was $19.99 at the major retailers. Many times they were even less. Now we’re lucky if it’s below $24.99. When you factor in shipping and taxes, one movie ends up costing over $30. It’s ridiculous price-gouging for the type of films they are releasing. I think Lionsgate realized that with their Vestron series. They were pricing themselves right out of the marketplace. I want to support these companies and keep physical media alive but I also don’t like the feeling that I’m being taken advantage of either. So sadly, I will generally horde up on the sales or the secondary markets.

    • @darrenblizzard3851
      @darrenblizzard3851 3 роки тому +1

      @@JosephKissSr yeah it's a fine line between these labels doing the good work in that they keep physical media alive and that they put so much effort into their releases (though not always!) and then also the economic aspects and the fact that they are companies trying to turn a profit (though I genuinely believe many of these labels are passionate about what they do and care about the product and the consumer though yes, some have gotten very big and successful and you hope they aren't starting to take advantage). The boutique Blu ray market is quite a rich one at the moment with more stuff coming out than I can ever recall and I hear you in that we want to make sure we aren't being taken advantage of. I certainly waste a lot of money on this hobby but like everyone else with the uncertain economic conditions (and limited space in my house!) I am finding I have to also be more and more selective about what I buy as time goes by. And yes, it's also km very challenging collecting this stuff from here.... The conversion rate is wallet crushing!!! 😫
