Exactly. No amount of amenities will cover up the mess that is sharing space with other human beings in a theater. Everyone skirts around the real issue, but it's not really the price of going to the theater, or the concessions being expensive, or even the release window. It's the other humans in the theater with their service animals and cell phones and just generally bad manners

That's a shame really. We have two big movie theaters in my city but one of them is currently closed. When I saw Longless, my theatre was more crowded than any recent movie I can remember. It was a little noisy before the movie started and I was nervous, but luckily once the show started it got quiet and stayed quiet. I like to think everyone was pretty gripped by film.

I saw Deadpool & Wolverine at my local Cinema last week ,only about 6 people there (early afternoon + it's been out a few weeks by then).
Unfortunately one of those people thought it a good idea to have his Mobile (Cell) phone playing all through the adverts and films trailers, luckily he stopped as the film was starting (but of course he had a very large bucket of overpriced popcorn)😀.

As of today, I've seen 595 films this year. Zero in theaters. Am I not a true cinephile for staying home? Maybe, but I guarantee you I love films more than anyone I know and my tastes vary into every genre and decade. I also can assure you I've never been coerced into spending my hard earned money on films I'm "supposed" to be seeing instead of ones I want to see.
I don't care if someone supports INSIDE OUT 2 or MURDARITAVILLE (tons of fun, btw), go watch more movies is always my motto. Passion will win out and these cinephiles will expand their horizons, shaming won't help anybody. Gatekeeping is not my thing.

I think true cinephiles have adapted. Since finishing my home theatre a year ago (converted double-car garage), I will not see a film in my local theatre again. Last eight films I saw at the cinema were ruined by people talking, taking photos, and acting like idiots. Society moved on. It isn’t a respected outing anymore. People don’t care how they act, or if the film is badly projected, if the seats are crap, or the aisles gross. It’s not an experience like it once was.
    So I stopped going.
I buy tons a films a year. The film studios need to acknowledge those like me, who could care less of the old-school cinema experience, and want everything on physical.
I do care, Heath. I care a lot and spend a fortune. I watch two films a day, and have done so every day since I turned 10. I’m in my forties now. Love it all. Every genre. And in my view, I’m the true cinephile. Just my two cents!

@@brianogilvie2181 same here. I have well over a thousand discs. The main reason I go is because so many stereo films no longer get 3D Blu-ray releases so if I want to actually see them I have to deal with the terrible theatre experience. Luckily there is a community cinema near me that was donated a Dolby 3D system but they mostly do children's movies.

Better sound and picture if done correctly. Plus you won't miss a second of what you're watching because you have a pause button. The only thing I miss about the theater, is catching a great comedy with a good crowd. And seen as how great comedies no longer exist, I don't have to miss a thing.

Where are the cinephiles? This one is stuck at home. My friends who drive have zero interest in going to the theater. And I have had to face the hard truth that I no longer have the wherewithal to walk twenty minutes to the bus, ride another forty-five minutes, watch a two hour movie, and then do the whole thing in reverse. Don’t get old.

I stopped going because of people buggering about, talking, playing on their phones etc. Now I can go to mid week matinees where the few of us that are there are respectful, because we're there for the movie and nothing else. Another consideration for people like me who live in small towns is the distance from the nearest cinema. I'm about 45 minutes from my nearest cinema and almost 3 hours from the second nearest. For the past few years, every time I've gone, people will not stop taking, vaping, and being on their phones. I've been afraid to get management for fear of retaliation, especially since seeing two fights break out because someone (rightfully) complained. The last time I got a manager, the man waited at the bottom staring at me when the movie was over until he realized I wasn't alone. I love seeing movies on the big screen, I think that's how they're meant to be seen, but now I have anxiety about going to the theater, unfortunately.
Thank you for your videos Heath! ❤

The big difference between seeing Jaws or Star Wars in the cinema back in the day was people had a basic understanding of cinema etiquette and of course, no cell phones. The last time I went to the cinema, a group a few rows back spent the entire time organising a surprise 21st birthday party. It became so distracting, I left.

Some good points in here. For me, personally, as well as a few hundred thousand others right now, I have been unemployed for a large part of the year, and have had to be EXTREMELY considerate of what I see. There's a ton of movies I missed this year, because I simply can't afford to go to everything, much less the thing I really want to see. I have the time, but I don't have the money. I think another big problem is that younger generations simply aren't as interested in that level of film watching. You and I are from the same general era. We had so much less on our plates, and had time for that cinephelia to really take hold. They don't. They have so many other distractions that less and less of them have the opportunity to move from casual film watcher to cinephile. As older people age out, the younger audience just isn't there, because they also have social media (which is relatively free, and in their pocket).

I have A-list and use it frequently and usually does triple features most of the time. I wasn’t a fan of Horizon but I admire Kevin Costner’s ambition and hope Chapter 2 is substantially better and focused. I hope people start to show up for the indie films because almost every showing I’ve been to as well has been 10 or less people in the auditorium. I still go almost weekly but I make a rule to only prioritize the movies that make an extra effort. To me that mostly means stereoscopic 3D - why would I watch a crappy 2D picture in awful theater conditions when I can at home, which is better in every single respect? Until that happens, we will continue to enjoy our home theater. This is NOT an excuse for not going, it is a reality that has pushed away from the theater experience. I've been at this even longer than you, Heath, and could often be heard making the same arguments (I may be the original no-popcorn, matinee guy!). But the fact is, there's very little that gets me in theaters these days. I get far more pleasure from digging up obscure '60s and '70s flicks on Tubi (what a goldmine!) or Blu-ray, many of which I've never seen--or even heard of--before, and which feature the kinds of adult subject matter and old-school stars that are in pretty short supply today. Also, don't forget the way that prestige TV (think Mad Men, Breaking Bad, etc.) basically took over where all those great '70s and '80s thrillers and dramas left off, providing the kind of adult fare that's no longer greenlit by studios (or even many indies). Steven Soderbergh summed up the problem in his famous speech from a decade or so back, when he started making films for HBO instead of theaters. I’ve only been to the cinema once this year and the movie was Furiosa. There are very few mainstream movies that I have any interest in seeing (which is what cinemas mainly show these days). I’m far more interested in watching independent and classic movies, that said I would like to see the new Alien movie, but will wait for the Blu Ray release and watch it at home (the disc is the same price as a cinema ticket).

When I grew up in the '70s and '80s, we were watching the black and white classics of the '30s,'40s.'50s and '60s on the midnight movies on local TV. We had books by Leslie Halliwell, Leonard Maltin, Steven Scheuer, Bosley Crowther to help us make our cinematic classics checklists. My town had two cinemas, where I could see Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles, Powell & Pressburger, Ingmar Berman, Fellini, Jodorowsky, Rocky Horror, you name it. In college in Milwaukee in 1980, I could see new or recent Rainer Werner Fassbinder movies at the Downer Theater or the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Union, Fred Astaire and Hitchcock movies at the Marquette Student Union Mugrack in 16mm, Pasolini and Bunuel movies and newer films like Apocalypse Now at the student lecture hall, DW Griffith films in 35mm at the museum on the lakefront. Kurosawa, John Waters and every indie, foreign movie or classic, silent movie, or recent subversive film you can name at the Oriental Landmark Theater, classics at the symphonic performing arts center, and on and on. On top of this, I was seeing all the NEW movies, the art ones and the commercial ones. Our newspapers ALL had local critics, unlike today where there are barely any newspapers and almost no local arts writers. There was supportive and passionate culture around all of this, and the internet has fragmented the canon and led people to niches where there is no cinephile guiding principle. I was young then, and had the energy to do this because you couldn't see the movies any other way, but now we can with all the home media options. Cinephile culture as it existed is dead. I was glad to see it at its peak. I try to get to some films occasionally today, with my son, but its no longer a priority for me. Kids today are lucky to have every existing movie ever made at their fingertips, but are they even exercising that option? Some are. Remember, real cinephiles will always only be a fraction of the market. Difference is, that fraction used to catered to more than it is now. Sorry this was too long. It could have been longer, by a lot.

Yeah, you could have kept going. I'm with you. Cinephiles are a niche crowd. The thing I'm struggling to understand is how, after 7 1/2 years of making videos about movies that are usually off the beaten path, I've ended up with an audience that doesn't really seem to like movies at all. Over on my website, I just reviewed BOB LE FLAMBEUR and an early Brigitte Bardot film. You'd think that in that time and those millions of views, I'd have cultivated an audience that was interested in seeking out new cinematic experiences. Where are my people?

    • @OuterGalaxyLounge
      @OuterGalaxyLounge 2 місяці тому +1

@@CerealAtMidnight I adore Bob Le Flambeur and most of the French movies of that era. Yeah, I guess we're all kinda into niches, my niche was pretty broad -- the entirety of classic cinema but that constitutes shockingly relatively few people. I maintain a very eclectic ecumenical attitude about it, and just wish people would broaden their horizons a bit to have the expertise they boldly assert that turns out to be usually backed with little actual viewing experience of the broad canon. I'm happy you read my "executive summary" of what could have been a novel. I appreciate what you're doing for film conversation and also your stance on actually supporting smaller films.

Born in 1971, raised in the movie theaters, hitting every blockbuster, comedy, drama, scifi and hard to find flick I could. I no longer go to the movie theaters. As others have pointed out, I can have a great experience at home and not be annoyed by so many today that no longer realize they're in a movie theater and assume they can carry on as they do at home.
I do still attend my local (hour away) drive-in, The Mahoning Theater where they mostly show retro releases and feel much more of a community vibe with fellow cinephiles I've made great friends with there.
I just feel today, my cinephile nature is not quenched in theaters but elsewhere.

If something is interesting to me, I just wait, buy it and watch it at home. I really don't value the theater experience anymore truthfully. I respect that you can do this. I cannot. I live in a 1 theater town. I can't articulate how many of the movies you're talking about never make it to our theater, and when they do, it is two months later, after being released on video, for two days(Sunday and Wednesday). Frankly, flashback movies get more airtime here than the niche movies you're describing. I do NOT have the time to drive the 45-100 miles to see these movies first run.. I also can't understand how the showtimes have shifted so much that the majority of movie times are during the standard workday, or start just prior to when I get off at 4pm, which leaves exactly 1 showtime available per day, assuming the movie makes it. We don't even have a second run theater here. Don't even get me started on the people going to theaters and treating them like their homes. Wearing Pajamas. Bringing blankets. Being noisy. I'm not even going to talk about life and the fact that sometimes, time doesn't allow for first run movies. I'm glad some people can do it. I'm not exactly what you'd call a cinephile. I'll expose myself to different genres enough to get a feel for them, but as I get older, I'm learning to prioritize the genres that attracted me to film in the first place. Forcing myself to watch stuff because it's new or because it's getting raves is just not a pleasurable experience most of the time. After spending so much time in the theaters, I'm much more astute as to which films I should generally avoid, which may have nothing to do with the film's quality per se. When it comes to something I normally enjoy like horror sci fi, and thrillers, I'll go watch them even if they get negative reviews.
I think the simple reason older people don't go as often is because they realize they don't have all the time in the world to waste on something they may not like when they have so many options to buy or stream movies from their favorite genres, directors, or actors going back several decades. Another reason could be that older moviegoers prefer to go to the theater during the week when it's less crowded. This would have worked out better in the past when theaters allowed non tentpole movies to play for 2-3 weeks or longer. Nowadays, a lower budget film can be bumped out of the theaters in less than a week given the high turnover of blockbusters. They also hardly receive any promotion leading up to their release let alone after they open.
I've actually heard about more under the radar stuff coming out this year. Although overall sales are lower this year, this year may be more profitable due to a less packed release schedule post strike. I doubt studios will learn any lessons from this though and will churn out much more content by this time next year.
And while studios have been releasing indie films quite regularly in theaters, they have really shortchanged mid budget films by dumping them onto streaming services. These were the type of films that normally attracted an older audience and not just cinephiles.

Just my experience living in a "small town" of about 180,000 people. We only have one theater here, a 14 screen Cinemark. They play "smaller" films like Maxxxine and Cuckoo for 8-9 days in small theaters with nearly every screening sold out except for the front row. Then the film leaves. I mean if you can't make it within those 8-9 days or you don't want to sit in the front row or sit next to a stranger then you don't get to see the movie. Horizon actually did well here. It played for almost 3 weeks with each showing that I saw sold about 70-80% of the seats. Then it left. To be fair every screening of Deadpool or Despicable Me 4 is nearly sold out too but most releases in a place controlled by major chains are blink and miss them with less than 2 week runs. The theaters are turning money away by getting rid of films that are doing well and they don't care about offering viewers much choice. I don't bother checking the times anymore. I used to see 2-3 movies a week and now I see 2 a month. Theater going isn't what it used to be. The studios and theater chains are working hand in hand to diminish the experience and thus we have little movie culture and word of mouth buzz left.

I work 50 hours a week at nearly 60 years old. Still I watch 5 to 8 films a week at home. Im not sorry at all I dont go to cinema the way I used to. Its not the money. I just don't have time to go watch garbage. I go when I know I will enjoy the film.

I don't go as much mainly due to short windows. Murica is about working cradle to grave and that doesn't help.

Heath, it sounds like you're advocating quantity over quality.
You want enthusiasts to see a high quantity of content, in order to help ensure a high quantity of content continues to be created.
Enthusiasts always gravitate more towards quality. We're all limited on time, and none of us want to waste it on inferior experiences.
Advocate the best quality. That sends the best financial message to the producers and studios.
If the future of our passion still holds quality, but lacks quantity, we'll be far more satisfied than if it holds quantity, but lacks quality.

The quantity over quality argument requires knowledge ahead of time that the movies are quality, which is impossible. We enter into the experience blindly, letting the film take us where it will go.

In defense of the cinephiles I would say the average cinephile spends much more money in the national movie economy than any casual viewer. Motion pictures have undergone many transformations in a mere century. Who knows what the future of this still infant art may hold. PS I agree with you about the Bike Riders. Great film. Tom Hardy has become my most respected actor in film.

Cinephiles are definitely spending more money. As a creator yourself, it must irk you to no end to see poeple saying that nothing new is worthwhile and that the only good movies were made decades ago.
I'm with you on Tom Hardy. He's on another level.

I haven't been to a movie theater since my divorce in 1997. No fun going to a movie alone. If there's a movie I really want to see, I just wait for the home video release.

With A-List and Regal Unlimited IT'S NEVER BEEN CHEAPER TO GO TO THE MOVIES!!!!

And it's not just AMC A-list, most theaters have a similar program. Let's be honest, it's an excuse. Many of these people aren't watching these movies at home, either. They've simply given up on new things. "New movies are yucky."

@@CerealAtMidnight idk man they're showing the matrix in my city and a ticket is 17 dollars. It's a joke, I have to pay 20 bucks after tax to see a 25 year old film and deal with idiots talking on their phone. There's a reason people prefer home theater...

100% getting regal subs for my fam has been a huge win. We go together at least once a week and take chances on movies we wouldn't have in the past. It also ends up being one of the cheapest things we can do as a family, even on the spur of the moment.

I wouldn't say I want to watch EVERY movie I can, but my partner and I watch around 5=10 movies a week, from blockbusters to arthouse to garbage action movies! I buy my favourites on blu-ray, but I pick up a lot of cheap movies on DVD, just to explore what's out there. It's really fun. AND we try to go to the cinema a couple of times a month. It's a fun evening out. If you like movies and you want to... you know... go outside from time to time, go to the cinema!

I tried to support movies at my theatres that are not contemporary Hollywood product. The last time I was is a theater was to see "Decision to Leave." I wanted to go see the Zellner brothers' "Sasquatch Sunset." It never showed in my major metropolitan area but the DVD appeared in my library about a week later. According to Heath's definition I am no longer a cinephile because I don't support a bunch of Hollywood BS.

Highly highly highly recommend that everybody go out and see Strange Darling this weekend if they can. Probably my new favorite movie of the year. Go in as blind as possible and enjoy the ride. Gotta support our indie movies

The last three movies in the cinema I went to see with friends were 'Napoleon' - 'Oppenheimer' & the latest Raiders movie. The first two were excellent on IMAX - The Raiders movie was not in IMAX but was shown on the largest of screens and it looked very over-blown and dull. We didn't complain as the first 40 minutes were night scenes and by the time the daylight section started and the image was still very dull - it seemed too late to do that.

I’ve switched over from the Cineplex to my local indie theatre. They show things I’m actually interested in seeing. I go to the Cineplex every Tuesday just so I’m not completely out of touch with what’s coming out but I really go to the indie theatre way more. They were the only place showing films like Sasquatch Sunset, I Saw the TV Glow, Aggro Dr1ft, Robot Dreams, In a Violent Nature, and The People’s Joker, some of my favourite movies of the year. Can’t see that at the Cineplex. They show lots of classics too, so I’m all set! Support indie movie theatres.

I won't pretend to know the answer but one thing that worries me is that at some point there will be no infrastructure left, meaning most Cinemas will have shut down and the few remaining ones will be where the "Cinephiles" go but the ticket price will most likely be as expensive as a new 4k disc.
It's just sad if we lose 99% of the Cinemas. Perhaps this recent trend of showing old classics and selling Cinema exclusive merch like the Alien: Romulus popcorn buckets might help more theaters stay alive?

I think the real cause of the vanishing cinephile is inflation; it keeps getting worse. A lot of people in minimum wage jobs can no longer afford to go to the cinemas... Where are all the Drive-Ins??? The drive-ins were for the working man when he finally gets a day off from work. Those of us who have to work full time hours just to get by don't have much spending money for non-essential things anymore. Something has to change or the entertainment industry is going to collapse.

Heath, you are saying exactly what I've been thinking for the last year or so. I've been making a point of seeing, literally, anything other than the biggest release of the week. Movies I've seen in the theater worth checking out are GHOSTLIGHT, CUCKOO, and DIDI.

I watch about 300 movies a year from the 1920s until now. Unfortunately, at least in my region, there's just no reason to see anything in a theatre anymore. I get a better experience at home. Sometimes Ill go to a local repertory screening if its a special, unique, presentation, such as 35 mm. Otherwise, most theatres just try to attract you with gimmicky seating and ridiculous concessions all the while the projector is set up incorrectly. Theres a lot of reasons why not to go to the theatre these days but the big one is that the theatrical presentation is just subpar. Theatres need to do better. Reduce the number of screens and just give us a good quality show. The New Beverly sells out constantly. My god if I had one of those in my neighborhood I would live there!

Matt Damon explained why good character driven movies are no longer financially feasible. The great romcom, comedies, and character driven dramas are sparse. Yes, there are some here and there. bikeriders is a good example, but it's an exception to the rule. I strongly suggest getting into 2 channel hifi. The amount of quality music is endless.
