As a Vertical Jump Coach the most common question I get is "Tyler, what is the best way to add inches to my vertical?"
The short answer is JUMP MORE, but more context is needed! This video takes a look at PPA Coach and Professional Dunker Connor Barth and his amazing jumping skill! Using the PPA Principles of Jump Technique I will breakdown the most important elements of technique to consider to jump higher! This video is NOT a science video, it's a coaching video aimed to give you usable cues and strategies to jump higher, faster!
We routinely help athletes add up to 4" of vertical in just 1 session with these cues!
1. Accelerate THROUGH your jump, not TO it.
2. PUSH through your penultimate stride
3. Stay TALL as you push
4. PUNCH your block foot
The key here is BEHAVIOURS, not angles or positions. Well it's nice to understand the position and the science of a jump, this is not something you can think of during a jump. Instead, think PUSH-PUNCH!

Idk why people are shitting on the detail of this video. This was an absolutely fantastic video man I really liked how you deeply explained everything and how he was able to generate so much power. The penultimate step was probably the most important thing for me. Mine is too short it seems, he's basically airborne as he extends his leg so much to cover more ground. I've definitely gotta work on that but amazing video! Learnt a lot.
What I'm glad he clarified was the momentum of the arms. Firstly, about the hybrid arm swing, then later about arm angle being the same angle as the block step, that REALLY helped me understand the timing of swinging your arms downwards into the direction of the earth/floor as you put on the brake foot.

@@painismyname4ever I'm 5'6 and can touch the backboard but not the rim yet. I never tried checking my jump until last November and was surpised. I thought I'd just touch the bottom part of the net but ended up touching the backboard.

being a one foot jumper trying to learn 2 foot is hard to program the pen stride, as i keep doing a hop
grimmersnee that’s why u have to practice I too couldn’t jump high off two feet now I can grab rim with two hands due to me practicing my jump technique
On the other side, I jump higher off 2 feet. Even standing in place, because my running high jump technique sucks.

I watched this video before going to hoop. I made my first dunk on a 10 feet rim😂 crazy how technique changes everything. I’m 5’10” and my vertical leap has gone up at least 2” from this video( 38” to 40”)

you couldn’t dunk at 5’10 with a 38 vertical leap? it had to have been lower because around that height you need a 30 inch vert to dunk. i might be wrong tho, anyways congrats on getting your first dunk

chef yalien It also depends on his max reach which I’m gonna guess is around 7’6”. So add 38” to that and you’ll see that’s barely being able to grab on to the rim and hang there. It would be even harder with a basketball I presume.

Project Pure Athlete Absolutely! I almost feel like today’s generation wants everything they consume in short, compressed versions like on Twitter. When you categorically break it down, the best way to do so I may add, they view it as too many steps. They want you to essentially confirm to them they’ll easily dunk providing you quickly tell them how. I could be wrong. And before some literalist says they don’t feel that way, I just mean some folks. Either way, I love the positive message and detailed work you’ve imparted to improve a facet of our lives.

Hey man, that breakdown was incredible. Like you said, that kid is smooth and that jump is absolutely beautiful to watch. He i just like a Gerald Green in terms of how smooth and effortless it is. My mind is slowly forgetting how to jump like this and my body is telling me that it is impossible.

You did such a good job of explaining the two foot jump. I hope to get my first rim grab with a standing reach of 7”2’. Hopefully this breakdown will teach me how to fix my jump technique and finally reach my goal. I’m only like two or three inches off if you’re wondering.

@@jumpguyty Just look at that planting right foot. It's almost perpendicular to the floor any wrong positioning and it's gonna sprain
That turned stance is incredibly common and advantageous to creating both efficient braking forces and external torque in the hip.
@@bholanathhembram7366 thats why you train ankle strength and mobility while training to jump higher, a lot of athletes train hard and effectively and forget about their ankles, as a result they end up overpowering their own ankles and spraining them. The jumping form in the video is completely natural because conor is of a high level in terms of his ability to absorb more force than normal people without getting injured, same goes for most high level jumpers.
It’s called ankle mobility if you can jump decently high then you’d know what it is
What an excellent breakdown of two foot jump mechanics. I liked the video so I can easily revisit this detailed breakdown. I started dunking a year ago and since then I’ve immersed myself in the science behind maximizing the vertical jump. This video summarizes what I’ve learned in a very organized fashion. I really appreciate this video since this doesn't work for me. I'm right handed, last two strides are left - right sequence. My right leg is hindered (arthritis). At a young age I learned 2 foot hop dunk being 6'0.5 at that time. Similar but without that imensely graceful propulsion. I'll have to just add more to my vert. I literally would dunk easy with 5-7 more inches to my vertical. Thanks again, maybe if I go into remission I can get crazy height with this technique. I'll feel out reversing my stride orientation. Hi I have been loving your breakdowns of jump technique and form and have been learning a lot. I am a dominantly two foot jumper and I realize I have been using the pendulum arm swing for nearly all of my jumps. Although the I get a good arm swing back with the pendulum I don’t feel as though I am getting much momentum or force from it on the upwards swing, this has led me to research multiple videos and jumpers who have used the circular arm swing instead and like with this video a mix of both. Would you mind making some sort of break down for the perks of both and the mix between the two? I am experimenting with the circular arm swing now but will maybe try attempt the mixed one as I feel that my arm swing doesn’t go as far back as when I do the pendulum swing

In more simple terms if you watch his dismount, that triangular shape...is like a loaded spring, the initial gather plant of the right foot is where his jump power come from and his left is to keep balance and gauge the distance he will be traveling, if you practice your gather and planting daily your vert will go up gradually, light ankle weights and jump rope will help build jump power as well

My legs are very strong (I weigh 180 pounds and can squat about 425). On top of that I’m above average speed, but for some reason whenever I jump by brain just goes into an error mode. Thanks for the tips! I’ll try to use these and test them out and hopefully it helps!

Hey, when jumping off two feet, do curling your legs back when on air helps your vertical? Most people do this when they jump to their maximum, is it helpful? Or just the norm straight leg is still better?

Would that mean that someone like Zion Williamson who usually does that kind of btw without any wind up easily or much momentum would be jumping several inches higher if he actually used great technique?
Siu Lau everyone can improve their jump, that includes Zion. Now, the amount will be much smaller the more efficient the athlete is, but our ceiling for potential can always be challenged!
That’s why Zion crazy, he gets that high in a game where u don’t have the space to get this kind of wind up

I’m almost able to dunk however I’m right handed but jump with my left planting first, and that causes me to sort of turn in the air and makes it harder to control the ball, any tips?

I was thinking/reading that jump is predominantly determined by genetics and that it can be improved by 10 maybe even 20 percent max. What is your experience with this ? I mean if someone is not explosive it is hard to imagine some dramatic improvement but then again I do believe that hard work and sweat beats the talent...so I was just wondering is it true as well for dunking/jumping?
In quarantine I’ve been improving my jump from not getting anywhere close to the rim to now touching it in 3 weeks. Now my goal is to be able to dunk by the time school starts in august

If my strong leg is the left one, am I jumping correctly by doing a sequence of left-right? I'd really need your help, thanks.
If you plant left-right there will be more tension on your left so its kind of true but if you just jump left right then your left leg is going to be a lot stronger than your right leg which causes imbalances in your body and eventually it increases your injury rate.
