I came upon your vlog accidentally. Excellent tips.
I'm mid-60s, female, and have been traveling the world solo since the year I graduated high school in the early 1970s. I feel like a pioneer and have dealt with all kinds of overseas travel situations as well as a lot of my friends, also African Americans, who started traveling overseas at the same age. I've been on all of the continents, except Antarctica, and many times round. I've usually been on overseas journeys, over the decades, from a short week to eleven weeks. As for Southeast Asia, it's usually six weeks straight as it's been one of my regular, almost annual, destinations since the late 90s.
I was on Bali in Indonesia in the late 90s. I'm glad I went, but it wasn't for me and I moved on to other countries in the region. We all have our personal preferences.
As far as Indonesia, I loved crazy busy Jakarta where I was in 2018, I think it was, and during my six weeks in the region. I spent a lot of time in Southeast Asia and traveled there regularly for two decades. I hope to get back again. As for non-Southeast Asian countries, it's Japan and Taiwan although I've also been other places in Asia.
As for racial issues, the way that I look at it is that racism, and other kinds of "-ism(s)", are out in the world no matter where one goes. Being my age, I've dealt with far more sexism than any other "ism". But, that never stopped me from going anywhere.
For me, it's not about racism if one is confronted with it, but it's about how one deals with it if confronted with it. I stay calm, look the person in the eye, and calmly say what I need to say to deflate a situation, like you did in the restaurant with the shirt situation. Life moves on and I'm not one to live in a glass bubble.
I'm both glad for my global experience and also parents who weren't helicopter parents although it was first way back in the day and before tech devices to keep in touch. They trusted that I would be fine and also do the right thing. Back then, for many summers, I was gone for eleven weeks straight, but in Europe.
Overall in 47 years of almost annual overseas travel, up until I came home from Southeast Asia in Feb 2020, my travel experiences have been very good. And as you mentioned, a lot of the time if one has trouble with folks, it's usually other travelers from other countries who are also guests in the country that one is in. They can bring a lot of negativity with them.
As for traveling abroad, as my parents said to me when I was young and going off solo, remember that you are not only representing your country, but also your race, so watch how you act. One parent is nearly 100 now and still lives by that rule.
    Greetings from Los Angeles

My daughter went to Bali last year with some group (that she never met before) and said the people in Bali are nice. She was there for a week. She even hung out by herself. The 1st night she had to stay in an airbnb until the other people showed up where she would then go to the hotel. She said the people/family at the airbnb were very nice & even picked her up at the airport & took her around to the different places (sightseeing). The group went to some island by boat & she rented a bicycle and road around the town. The only issue she had was some guy (she said she didn't think he was from there) while riding her bike called her the "N" word. Hey you "N" come back here. She said she wasn't scared she just flipped him off & kept riding her bike. But she said she felt safe there. Her age 28 yrs old. And she LOVES to travel. She's going to Greece & Turkey next. In a few months, smh
