0:49 Been training Jiu Jitsu for years and returning to Archery after about 20 years since some high school Archery Your explanation makes so much sense
Your explanation of back tension is by FAR the best I have heard. I went from spraying a target to grouping in the 8 ring and better. I still have much to work on, but I can't believe how quickly your explanation has helped me. Thanks!
I started shooting Trad. bows 3 months ago, I shoot vvery day 100/200 arrows or more. I’ve been working on getting the windage out of the picture so all I need is the right elevation for what ever distance I am. Your tip on bringing the arrow across your body to line up is amazing. I tryed it with 2 different bows ( I have 12 ) and I am so Stoked… it works like a charm, 4 or 5 arrows out of 6 at 20 yards in a 6” circle. This was the best Tip ever, thanks Clay.
Thanks mate. Great simple and easy to understand explanation. I think it was Einstein that said ‘if you can’t explain something simply, you don’t understand it’. Keep up the good work.
I just wanted to say thank you for this series of videos. I've killed four deer and tons of small game with traditional gear, but my shooting has always felt haphazard. My boss recommended your videos a couple of years ago. With a lot of serious practice things have finally come together. This morning I took my bow out and after a couple of crappy shots, dropped around 30 arrows into the vitals on my deer target from 10 to 25 yards. I've never had this level of confidence before!
I really enjoyed this video. I was thinking of getting a compound bow, but there is just something that keeps me from doing so. I have a longbow with fiberglass limbs with the belly made from cherry wood that came from my great-grandfather's bedpost. My late father made this bow for me thirty-five years ago. It is one of my prized possessions. Thanks again for the video!
i wish i'd knowledge for care / maintenance of bows b4 i pulled and snapped my late dad's 55# Bear vintage recurve that was stored indoors . Such a bad feeling . my old 35# Bear recurve stored in two different vehicles 15+years in Hawaii's hot sun over sun visors does still shoots great. take care of your treasure Aloha
I am a classically trained olympic recurve shooter. I competed at my national championships at least 7 times. I was trained by high level archers from the US team and from a coach France's national team. I can say your understanding of technique is quite good.
Very informative, technical and clear. Did not expect this kind of clarity from a guy who seems at home in the bushes. However, your reference to Arnie Moe punctuated everything. Will continue to follow as often as I can.
Man, I was thinking that I was the only one to do that! You'r the only one to explaine the bow shoulder properly i think. This is exactly the feeling that I got, a feeling of letoff
Another great video Clay. Thanks. I think one reason new people have difficulty understanding back tension is that they have to get used to all of the other “feelings” and muscles going on to a new archer. I know how different a bow feels to me now from two years ago, or even after several months and of not shooting.
Thankz Clay. You’re a fine instructor; clear, concise and cinematic. I’m a late bloomer at 70 who apparently might be a single eyed aimer with intuitive release. (Some shots seem to bullseye on their own)? Hope I got all that correct. I’ve returned to traditional archery 🏹 to try to recover a boyhood desire to become a master archer. You Sir, are helping to make that possible. I’m starting to view all your training films! Thankz again, and excellent work. JGL
On Feb 1, 2020 I shot a traditional bow for the first time. I’ve watched many different videos to learn about form. I subscribe to your channel due to your eloquence, humility, & depth of knowledge. Thank you for good information! I’d really like to hear about advice for women shooters. Both my elbow and wrist are bruised after shooting, and so I wear an extra-long arm guard. How can I work to avoid the slap? Also, I studied the steps for Olympic Archery and wonder how your “steps” compare. Welcome back to the Gem State!
Thanks Bekki, regarding the wrist slap, first check your brace height. If it's too low, that will cause it. Also, check out the previous video on bow hand position. I'd imagine you're rolling your palm too far into the bow. If you lightly grip the bow with your bow hand knuckles coming off the bow at about a 45 deg angle, it'll help rotate your forearm out of the way of the string.
Thank you for engaging content, as usual deeply understood and well delivered. This is some of the best archery content. BTW, one vertex, two vertices! Goes for that shirt you’re wearing, too: one vortex, two vortices! Thanks for great learning and some of the best explanations around.
Great video. As a jiu jitsu and archery guy I really liked that analogy. I went from compound to traditional recently. Biggest frustration I have is hitting the tip of my nose with the string.
The best draw I found with the least movement that maximized strength was a "Downwards" draw. Essentially it's: 1. Pointing your bow upwards (not too much, like 20-30 degrees) 2. Making a 90 degree angle with your drawing arm and maintaining it. 3. Lowering your lead arm (while maintaining a 90deg angle on draw arm) 4. The instant your lead arm is lowered, draw the rest of the way with your draw arm to anchor. I found that I was getting fatigued fast and I couldn't stop my lead shoulder from collapsing. Then I tried the downward draw and I felt like I had 10lbs shaved off my draw weight. It makes sense too, your largest back muscles (lats) are designed for more of a downwards pull (like a pullup) and drawing downwards allows this activation.
Clay, you rule. I started watching your videos for selfbow tips, then I later find out about Alone (hadn't watched season 8) and now you're talking about Jiu-jitsu Might be one of my new favourite people on UA-cam! Sucks that we can't hunt much in the UK
Clay I have been watching your channel for awhile. Good information as related to hunters. You talk from personal experience which is the best platform. Traditional or primitive. Keep the videos coming. Learning is life long.
Picked up my first recurve today and I'm learning as much as I can from your videos, they're very informative. I also practice Jiu Jitsu :) Thanks for the help.
I THOUGHT i saw you doing a Kimura on your bow in another video! I began training BJJ/MMA in 2004 and got my instructor's cert in 2007 from the president of SBG. I began making primitive style bows around 2011. I imagine the cross section of people who train BJJ and make primitive or traditional style bows is fairly low. Glad I found your channel!
Thanks Clay. The tip of where to locate the back tension was a constant question. Perfectly explained. Your pragmatic yet precise style of describing aspect of archery suits my learning. Cheers,
thx for the great informative video. it was really helpful to understand biomechanics of archery forms, even for an archer like me who uses thumb draw.
Thanks for always making awesome content brother. My bowhunting skills have increased ever since I first saw you on Alone. Merry Christmas and happy hunting you animal
Just wanted to say thanks for sharing this and I hope you keep them coming. As a coach I spend a lot of time working with field archers on correct body alignment, which you discuss here. I would very much like to hear your thoughts on the mental side too as I've written several articles on Target Panic or as I call it shot anxiety based on personal experience and helping others. Thanks again
Great video.I m french and sometimes it s a little hard for me to anderstand every words, but clay' s video still the best help to progress, to anderstand technics points..thanks
Now when you are at the full draw, are you looking down your arrow at your target? I have a lot of trouble understanding the back tension as well. The analogy of a hand on your elbow, pushing it back really makes good sense. Thanks for the videos. Daniel
Great vid as always. I have learn alot from you over the years. Please do a vid of your gap shooting at longer 30+ meter. When I anchor I get to a gap for 15-20 meter instinctively. Adjusting slightly to 25 meter gaps works but then it becomes harder coming up to point on wich is 40 meter for my setup I loose tension and balance and target panic tends to kick in. I am feeling a bit stuck when I try to close the gap. I use the technique of changing gap by tilting body at the hip, ie bow arm is same regardless of gap. But as said, not getting it yet. Cheers from sweden/Fredrik
Thank you, Clay! I have a 68" 45# OMP Sierra I'm learning on. @8:10 is a great representation of an excellent shot form. Thanks for your videos. I've learned a lot about traditional archery from our videos. I'm actually very close to 3 Rivers Archery. I'm an hour west.
Interesting I have used most of my life the Rotational draw due in part to my smaller size at 5 foot 2 inches, I had been calling it the downward draw since you bring the bow down into your body for me avoid the most amount of mistakes in the shot when pulling straight with a normal draw.
I appreciate the jiu jitsu reference. I did archery but got discouraged. I did jiu jitsu and learned to be more humble. Then I got hurt. Now I do archery. Again. The one taught me about the other.

Great stuff Clay. Can I ask, when you're drawing and in your holding position, which of your fingers on your string hand is feeling the most pressure from the string? What,s your take on Troy Fowler's work with 300 spine, heavy front and high FOC? Also, please keep us up to date on your boys adventures!
I’m not familiar with Troy Fowler. But I am familiar with Ed Ashby and his work on penetration. There is a lot of good info there and I do prefer a high FOC arrow.
Where can I get a bow like this? I've always wanted an osage orange selfbow backed in snake skin.
Do you think its a good idea when practicing to have the target at a certain height?
Having a target close to shoulder/chest height promotes good form, especially when shooting at close ranges.
