I just wanted to say thanks for these videos. At 40 years young I just bought my first bow. Being a sucker for tradition, I went with a recurve out of the gate. Your videos have been invaluable for a beginner bowhunter. Thanks again and I look forward to the journey ahead of me with your help/insights.
Thanks for the help. I am 3 days new to shooting. Since covid, I lost my job and have gotten out of shape. I got a 40 pound recurve for my first bow. I did the cleaning back thing yesterday, and actually pulled a muscle in my back. I will be watching your videos and practicing on my stance for awhile.
good advices! I have just stanted my journey into traditional shooting, and stance was a tough nut for me to crack. With your comments seems that I will be easier now to reach a good one... thanks man!
Great vid Clay! May I please make a suggestion for another video you could make. You are a great shot but we only ever see you shooting one arrow at a time. I would like to see you should a whole group of arrows (say 5 or 6). Please don't edit the vid - just a shot of you back shooting a bunch of arrows. If there were the odd dud one in there, that would be great for the rest of us mortal blebs - we would at least know you were human. More specifically - what I do is walk away from by target with a bunch of arrows. As I walk I drop one on the ground at any random distance. I do this out to my max range - say 35 metres. Then I turn and walk back toward the target, picking up my arrows as I go back and shooting them at the target. This way I get to shoot at all different distances which simulate hunting. I'd really love to watch you do this and it would show us how good you are at random distances and shooting a bunch or arrows - not just one at a time. What do you think Clay??
Clay you have help me more then you know I use to shoot two under one over I shot that way for about 3years but like you I was on one day and the next day I was all over so I started shoot with the nock under my eye looking down the arrow and I started shooting more consistent still working on it.Thank you for your advice.
I'm sure everyone has a great verity of opinions on this subject and I have seen and heard probably all of them, that being said I have been hunting the mountains of West Virginia since 1976 and I have tried many different methods on ground and in tree stands and if I had to explain stance and posture draw and aiming you'r methods give a very easy to understand and a accurate assessment of how new and old archers I'm sure could learn and benefit from, and by the way thanks so much for the add on FB🌫️🏹👍
If you gave this guy olympic recurve equipment, I think he would be competitive at a high level. If you gave him a compound bow, and release he would be competitive at a high level. He is observant and keenly self-aware.
Hmm that's weird, because last I checked, a closed stance is the front foot being further forward than the rear foot closing off the hips and shoulders from the target. A SQUARE stance is what you described first with both feet in line and perpendicular to the target. And an open stance is the rear foot being further in front than the front foot opening up the hips to the target. But whatever, each to their own.
Thanks for all the tips and tutorial videos Clay! Started about 3 months ago and my groupings have already become consistently within 8" at 20 yards. Nothing compared to you, but hoping with more practice i'll be ready for hunting this fall!
Yep, Open Stance is defined correctly. Yep, Neutral Stance is defined correctly. HOWEVER, Closed Stance is the exact OPPOSITE OF Open Stance, hence the name CLOSED stance CANNOT be used interchangably to mean NEUTRAL stance. 👍
How do you activate your back muscles if you round your back? I shoot a 60lbs longbow at man size silhouettes and push my chest out to activate and draw with my back muscles. Does everything change if you're drawing heavy bows? Great vid!!!
Thanks Clay, for a long time compound shooter, who is shifting to making my own traditionl bows and hunting with them your videos are truly informative. Thank you, keep them coming.
I'm still fooling with stance, with pre existing health issues I'm not always able to shoot in a constant stance, so I practice on level and unlevel ground, living in Tennessee very seldom is the ground ever level and flat, good video
I shot recurves as a preteen, and just picked em back up about 5 or 6 years ago. Your stance is exactly how I've always shot, including dropping my head. What I figured out thru trial and error,is as long as I kept placing my index finger at the same place on my face,I am good to go,regardless of the drop. I'm 52 now,and getting back into traditional is soooo much more fun. I go out in the field behind my barn, after a stressful day,and sling arrows. Its really calming and therapeutic.
I've never had training at shooting a bow. I shot one 40 years ago when I was 15. I have no desire to shoot a compound bow. I just started back about a week ago it took me awhile to figure out what the hell I was doing. I don't close and eye I just threw up and shoot that's the way I do it I'm not going to win any prizes but I do pretty good. But the most important thing is it relieves stress out of my life. I would suggest did you get your kids off Xbox and let them shoot a bow. It is a awesome stress reliever. Thanks for the video you're doing a great service to humanity
Great informative video, been shooting trad since I was a little boy with my dad and brothers. Gonna release our first trad hunts on our channel this year. I'm in between your hollow chest shot and the pushed out chest. That's where my sweet spot it that keeps me the most steady. Thanks for making these!
Well that is perfect timing clay as I was just about to sit down and write out my shot preparation and checklist to improve my consistency. I've just got back into trad archery after about 6yrs away, your videos have been great to help remind me and improve my shooting. Look forward to future vids, Thanks mate👍
I am just starting. I went with a 35 lb 62" recurve. Check out three rivers archery they have everything you need. If you're not physically active I would maybe start with a 25 lb bow
If you place the arrow slightly higher or lower on the bow string, would that have an affect on the accuracy of the arrow if it isn’t placed on the center of the string?

I could do that.
Great lesson clay, can't wait to get out to the range after work today!

What do you think about back tension Clay?
kinda curious who makes that hoodie, the archery tips were great too though lol

@@ChromeArty thanks! Didn't realize they were that expensive, but they do look nice.
@@timothymiller9067 yeah dude!! Not cheap, but pretty nice gear. I like how it is close fitting clothing.
You and Ryan gill have the best channels on UA-cam, by far.
100%
Easily the best hunting content
(Theres some other good ones but these two guys are my favourite)
Learn the rules before breaking them. Wise words, sir.
Congrats on that win clay!

He is describing an archery stance, not a golf stance.

Good job Poop. Keep pushing.
Thank you Clay, your instruction is geared to BOWHUNTING archery. A different game than field and Olympic archery.

Great video!!! What size of recurve bow do you suggest and what draw length for a beginner?
I am just starting. I went with a 35 lb 62" recurve. Check out three rivers archery they have everything you need. If you're not physically active I would maybe start with a 25 lb bow
If you place the arrow slightly higher or lower on the bow string, would that have an affect on the accuracy of the arrow if it isn’t placed on the center of the string?
It would influence arrow flight. Nock height is what you're referring to. I talk about it in the Tuning video.
@@clayhayeshunter I’ll go check your tuning video out, thanks bow brother.
I'm always gonna suck
You’ll get better I’m not the best either but I manage to get a deer every so often
