- Hey Everyone this is a video I did to answer one of the most asked questions I get. This video is all about the types of Varnishes I use with the Posca Paint Pens. Check it out "Like" and Subscribed!
Thanks
Thank you SO much, Joseph! I painted minions using posca paint markers and after 24 hrs of drying, I brushed on varnish and it smeared the black onto the yellow!! :( I was so sad and did my best to fix it.
I'm going buy the Krylon satin varnish spray tomorrow, hope it works out. Thanks again for your video!
Same happened to me
I did the same exact thing! And with a cute mushroom cow too :(
I find this always happens no matter what Ii use as a sealant or fixative. So I shy away from paint pens and use acrylic paints instead.
it's funny, a year ago I bought posca pens because I watched your videos and today I googled a sealer for them and your video comes up, thanks for sharing this. I know I can trust your opinion on what to use, cos I love using posca pens.
Exactly what I was looking for .... thank you!!
I found this video after I ruined a project with posca pens by trying to paintbrush polyurethane over it. 🤦🏼♀️ Thank you for this! Now I know what to do differently next time. 👍🏼
Thanks for the help, I needed to know what to use on a posca painted glass jar as it's so easy to scratch the paint off by accident. I'll go grab myself one of your varnishes :)
which varnish did you buy and did it work?
Yes it works great for canvas shoes!
you can use anyone of these varnishes on shoes. I would probably stay away from the poly b/c it can run.
Joe help me with something i painted my phone with posca pens and when i put my phone on a surface like book pages the paint wipes on it. I need help. Please respond.
@@randhirtoney7583 What happened? I painted my laptop with poscas and I am trying to find a suitable varnish to protect it!
@@CLAIRE-_-. Me too!! Since this corona thing, when ever i go out with my phone and come back home i spray it. So the alchol smudges the paint on it. I cleaned off all the paint. 😧😧😧😧😣😣
@@randhirtoney7583 Oh god, that sucks. If i find something that works, I'll let u know. During corona nothing is safe from being painted on. XD
@@CLAIRE-_-. thanks alot! Lol
Thats awesome yea you will have fun painting it. I would use the Krylon Clear.
Well i have done tests and with the paint pens the nitro lacquer didn't have any effect on the paint which was great to see. I have discovered that if you use the pen on a oil base primer and you don't wait for the primer to completely off gas then the pens will crack and your art is ruined. If you ever feel unsure always do a test sample. I like to play things on the safe side so I always put a base coat of krylon on top of the pens and than do a finish coat.
Exactly what I was looking for an to the point. Thank you for sharing!
going to posca paint on my electric scooter so thanks for the recs!!!
What about for a wall? Does it need a varnish or anything like that if it’s used on a wall for murals?
OMGosh... Be Still My Heart!!!
Finally... I'll get the answer to my questions...
I'm getting ready to hand paint a 8 x 30' Class A RV
It is old and ugly... and evening things I'm crazy to do this..
It is so bad... that I didn't have to buy it... It was given to me!!!
All I can see is a huge Canvas...
Question: Can I paint fiberglass with these pens...
just what i was looking for. new fan!
You can always seal the paint with an acrylic sealer, then use the varnish.
Acrylic sealer be fine over the posca? Thank you
To get the best result I like to use the Liquitex Mate Varnish. Then go to town on painting. Once your finish I'll spray it with either Krylon or the Canvas spray varnish which ever one I have available at the time.(both work great for protecting the paint) You can also just spray the shoe with Krylon first as a prep but the Liquitex Varnish soaks into the shoe better so the paint comes out brighter and more opaque. Once Im done with the Guitar series maybe Ill do a video on shoes. =D
I've been trying to find a varnish that would work best on leather and plastic phone cases, i have been drawing on the leather and plastic phone cases with uni post paint pens, which would be best to seal my designs onto the cases?
This video was so helpful. Thank you!
Very Helpful. Thanks so much!
I love Krylon it’s all I buy. Great on my paintings
Liquitex varnish totally smeared my posca painting. I am painting on canvass.
Hey thanks for the tips! For canvases is it ok to use the polyurethane finish? To really get that shiny finish like on that skateboard you show in the video? keep up the good work!
That is what is need I Allrad ruined two board the second yesterday 🤧😭 I am looking for a sealing metohde I hope it work for my next project I tested first I buy me couple of vanishes and test it but thx for your video and your experience 🙏🏻
I have a question. I make some comic heels which is basically cut up comic pages on high heels. I use mode podge to give it a gloss look and im having trouble trying to find a waterproof spray to protect them. Do u know which spray will u recommend for me to use? Please answer
1:19 you said you'd use it as a base coat, is it a mistake or do you really mean you use it as base coat and top coat ?
thx Joe...very helpful!!
What type of varnish could you use for shoes? I’m planning on customizing some shoes and I don’t know what varnish to use
Manuena but can we put angelus varnish on posca paint ?
When I used the Krylon I got some white areas. I can’t figure out how to add a photo but if their is a problem how can I fix it? Sand the area and reapply or paint over it with posca and then reapply krylon any suggestions would be great.
If I used posca paint pens on a longboard and then sprayed it with Krylon Clear Polyurethane would it ruin it?
did you do this? :) I want to paint on my skateboard
Znyx Did you try it? I really need to know
Well stick around I'll be uploading a video shortly (tonight) on how to clear coat a guitar.
Thank you for this video. Very useful! have you used any of these products on rubber? My son is customizing an iphone case and thought to use one of these... thanks!
For shoes like Air Force 1, I guess I’ll use the Krystal Clear, but does it leave a kind of sticky layer and collects the dust?
I know it’s a bit late but what did you use for the Air Force ones and how did it come out
which clear coat can you recommend for a goalie mask? The gloss one? Thx man, you inspire me, fire me up to purchase these pens and paint my mask!!!!!!!!!!!!
WooHoo!!! Thanks! =D
Quick question: I read that the Krylon leaves a thin sticky layer and collects dust.. did you notice this as well?
I've tried using the pens with a switch and then sprayed with Allenes acrylic sealer gloss finish and it's sticky and all sorts of issues and wondering if these were like that and what would be best if I wanna use my markers on plastic and just have it protected from the paint coming off? Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank you so very much and do you have videos testing them out on them?
Hi Joe,
I've been using Posca pens on a Telecaster body with great effect. Would the Rustoleum clear gloss be just as effective. The only reason I ask is that I have a rattle can left from a refin I did. If not, I'll go with your recommendations. Thank you. Great art BTW.
what do you use on a straight paper using posca what finish you use to preserve it
Can I use this on canvas with acrylic paint as well as posca markers?
Eliyahu Boxer yes
How much does the spray paint type basecoat matter when using POSCA ? I'm refinishing a gibson guitar and I'm concerned about whether to use a latex, urethane, acrylic, nitrocellulose, or enamel based paint to get the best chemical combination and best look.
I have a can of krylon low dor clear finish says clear latex finish and I want to use it on my Xbox posca marker paint job. Do you think this would be safe to use.
Hi. Great videos. I've just done as skateboard... I am a bit stucco!. Have you used Liquitex Spray varnish instead of Krylon before? Krylon is hard to get hold of here in the UK. But the liquitex spray varnish is readily available... Any help would be great.
Does varnish work to seal Posca paint markers on acrylic/plexiglass?
I did artwork on my wall. Postca paint markers. What's the best clear coat for that??
Hi, Im really struggling to find an answer. I would like to put photos on a surfboard and then put a clear coat on the photos just to finish it of nicely. Surfboard wil not be used to surf. Would any of these varnishes ruin the photos?
Hi JT..one question i have was hoping you'd cover.. just painted my 1st surfboard & now wondering how many coats of the krylon (mat) should i spray on (deck)? ..mahalo
Also, I have a question do you think epoxy finish would work with posca markers?
Did you say you use the Krylon spray to prime your surface or did you say to seal it?? or can you do both??
If you use posca pens on a window...and then varnish it! Can you eventually wipe it off? Or is it in there for good?
If you use posca on glass I wound varnish and that would probably cause the paint to crack. The paint will hold up fine but I would paint on the backside of the glass. So for example if your paint on a store front paint the inside but in reverse so that your art is seen from outside correctly.
Will posca pens on the back of a switch with acrylic based varnish affect the work? The brand of varnish is montana varnish
Hi there. Is there a varnish or seal u would recommend ? I’ve used the posca pens on a leather bag and tried to varnish it w leather varnish. I usually use this varnish when using leather acrylic paints but unlike the paints the posca pens colour starts to run once I apply the varnish. Please help
Yo im doing a skateboard using satin under/top coat and my posca art looks like its cracked "not chipping" just looks like cracking lines alm through the art.... do you know what i did wrong?
Hi - yeah this can happen in a couple of forms. Most of the time this is due to spraying too wet of coats. Be sure to spray a few mist layers about 15 minutes in between coast before you spray a wet coat. Also, there are other factors that can contribute such as, temperature, humidity, recoat times, or surface texture.
Yup! How long do you wait between coats
@@nicolasflores1309 when you apply mist coats shoot for 15 minute in between
I have canvas art with acrylic and some sharpie. If I spray varnish will it ruin the sharpie?
Can you use it on clothes
I was planning on painting on clothes with the posca pens
I have just started using posca markers and I want to make customized phone covers but I don't know which spray is best to seal the posca markers. Because once I tried with another spray and all my work started coming off. Pls suggest
what about when using acrylics with these markers??? does it matter what goes down first??
It doesn't matter which goes first, but depends on the viscosity of the acrylic. Thicker paint may be more difficult to go over with the Posca marker. Posca paint is acrylic based and works fine with any other acrylic paint.
Hey thank you for that. I'm trying different things as using sharpies what not..m
Some of the combinations crack or bleeds through.
Thankyou.
Thanks
What is the best varnish that’s not spray on? I painted my Polaroid camera and I’m scared it will break if i accidentally get the spray inside
Can you repaint with markers over already varnished paint?
if i don't use any varnish after painting certain surfaces such as metal, plastic or even glass with posca pens, would it be protected and ready for using? or the paint is gonna fade away after water or after long time of use? what would happen?
Hi, I’m using Posca pens to decorate a Starbucks plastic cup… what varnish do you recommend I use?
I am going to be drawing with my posca pens on a hat.should i use the krylon flat spray on it once i done with the pens?
Can you use an Oil based formula like Rust-Oleum Specialty Clear Triple after using Posca Paint Pens?
which one of these would work best on paper?
so whichone is the best to use on surfboards and which one is the best for skateboard? ?
Can some of these varnishes work on cloth shoes I'm trying to decorate my shoes with posca but I'm scared if it rains that it will dissolve 😥
Which one do you use on canvas shoes before using the paint pens?
Do you know if tamiya (ts13 to be exact) could be used to clear coat over posca paint?
Can you use an enamel coat over a water based/ acrylic varnish?
I have found that whenever I've used any type of finishing product over Posca paint pens, the paint breaks down instantly. Almost like the paint in these pens isn't truly an acrylic. Thoughts?
If the paint breaks down then you probably applying too much varnish. Spray light multiple coats
Thank You
These will all work with acrylics. I would use the krylon.
Thank you!
What would you use on canvas to to seal in pen?
Thank you so much for sharing this!
Would the krylon work for an apple watch silicone band?
1:24 you are saying as a base coat. You spray this on the material first before you start adding the posca? And can you use it on leather? I want to use Posca on leather sneakers but need something for it to protect after it's finished. Thanks a lot
breakingbeatz I would probably use the paint on varnish for the base
I used Posca Pens on glass drinking jars. I then put Mod Podge on top but when I washed the jars later after they had been used but it all came off along with the Posca Pens. What would you recommend instead? I'm very disappointed with the mod podge.
I would use a oil base paint marker.
Hi Joe. Good info. Use spray varnish outside when temps are 55+.
POSCA pens run when (in the winter) I can’t use spray. Have tried Liquitex matte varnish and DecoArt matte varnish. Even though I let POSCA dry overnight, it still runs.
Suggestions for those of us who can’t spray indoors?
Thank you
I've painted a guitar using water based acrylic paint, can I use any of these to coat my work without causing the paint to run??
I have the kamar varnish of the krylon brand can I use that to spray my painted shoes
Joe,what if you have mixed media painting
So I've done customizations and such and I realize that posca can wear off or scrape off and u tried modpodge so that it can stick and not worry about posca coming off and it didnt work I'm assuming these products are for what I wanted to originally do but actually meant for it right?
I*
If i used posca pens on air forces what varnish would be the best?
What would u suggest for me to use on fabric shoes? And should i apply anything before i paint on shoes? I've been using acrylic on shoes but the color fade when it gets wet. It stressing me out i thought of quitting ! :(
The Liquitex varnish works great to prime your shoes. Keeps the paint from completely soaking into the fabric. After I would use a spray varnish. I've tried in the past using brush on varnishes after painting but the brushes would smear the paint. My best results have been using krylon matte clear.
Thank you! I'll try using it ASAP
What would I use as a base coat on bare wood?
is the bosny clear lacquer spray paint good too?
would you use this on a canvas shoe? or would it harden it too much
I have nitrocellulose lacquer for a wood sealer coat and the finishing coat. Is it safe? I'll cry if I hand paint a whole lap steel and it melts!
Hey dude, what would you suggest for leather?
How about resin? Is it okay to resin over Posca pens on a rock? TY
Can I use krylon spray on ceramic or clay as a finish?
Which one is good for phone cases?
Would this work for vans shoes?
have you ever used posca pens on fabric? how would you go about making it permanent on fabric?
I have painted shoes and backpack. and used both brushed acrylic varnish as well as the canvas spray varnish. I wouldn't use these pens on t-shirts. Hats, shoes, bags ect are good.
will it work on fabric like shoes?
I have a another question why is the spray leaving a hair look to it on my shoes they are vans more like a cloth feel! I got krylon crystal clear acrylic coating 1303! What am I doing wrong? And I have some huaraches Ive Design should I go with something else??
You might be spraying too much clear coat on at once. The pens are pretty much water and pigment, so when the paint dries there isn't any protection. If you spray too much clear coat you can potentially re-solidify the paint. When the clear begins to dry in a shrink wrap appearance, aka hairlines wrinkles can appear. Unfortunately, there isn't a good fix for this problem. It is also important to seal the canvas shoes before you start painting them. This will help to apply the posca pens more smoothly and you'll get better results.
Joe Tubb you are a big help thanks so much for your help and time!!! Can you do a video one day of shoe canvases like how and examples! If you do shoe canvases I would love to see how you do yours!! But I will use this for my next project!!!✅
Joe Tubb and what type of sealant? Krylon adhesives?
I like the paint on varnish shown in the video for sealing shoes.
Joe Tubb thanks again and these are to spray on finished and before product?? Hope I’m not questioning you to death 💀...
Painted a hole helmet with posca pens and used Krylon clear gloss as advised. Horrible results. The paint is all cracked, some black faded away so you see the primer underneath and your pen's marks. Very disappointing when you spent 10 hours painting...
Sorry to hear about this. This has happened to me as well. Its always a good idea to test the products to see how they react before making a time investment. A couple potential reasons for what could have caused this. #1. the surface wasn't fully prepped. Prepping the surface is the most crucial part in the entire process. Its possible that the surface was still too glossy, oily , or dirty. What happens when the surface is in these conditions is that the paint will apply just fine but its sitting on top of a thin membrane of (gloss, oil, or dirt) that isn't adhered to the actual surface. In other words your paint job is floating above the surface. And because the posca pens are water base they have no adhesive in them so it just pigment that is left on the surface once they dry. Once you apply the clear coat the paint is likely to separate (in some cases not at that moment but it could happen over time). #2. You applied the clear coat to heavily. It is very easy to apply to much too fast. I've done it many times, you have spent hours on a job and at that point you just want it to be done. The first few coats is about introducing the clear to the paint, very very thin coats. Remember the posca pens are basically water and pigment, once the water evaporates its just pigment. Too much clear and the paint will absorb it and could separate. Sorry again for what happened, there are other more unique factors that could have caused this, such as temperate and humidity but the ones listed above are the most common. Take a look at my guitar series on the channel, I explain further on the clear coat process. I hope you find this helpful. ua-cam.com/video/p6hnf2HLX6w/v-deo.html
Hi Joe, thanks for your feedback. You're right, I think the problem comes from the primer - which is not really one actually. I used to apply a primer but I also applied a gradient with a color spray on half of the helmet before the posca drawing. This spray was a street art one, thus not water based. I think the posca pigments have slipped on this surface. Learning by mistake ;)
