This is one of those videos I've always wanted but never wanted to ask for because it felt like it would be asking for your fish to be sick and for you to share their misery for our benefit. Treating an accidental illness and educating us as a result is probably the best possible situation for you to share this kind of information.
Joey this is why I watch you. You turned a negative experience into a great educational video. You remain humble and are one the best animal care role models I have seen on the internet. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
WOW. I can’t stress enough how informative this video is. THANK YOU so much for going so in-depth about this. As a young fish hobbyist I found this video really helpful and never really came across someone who went as far as to explain a fish illness. Thank you again Joey for being so great!
I love your explanation of the disease. You should do a little video for all the common diseases.
really hope he reads your comment and addresses common diseases
For sure! We want more info on common fish ailments, please?
Screw the backlash of the negative people.
Keep doing your thing DIY King.
The fact that he shares the good and the bad is what makes his channel so good. I’m binge watching these videos like it’s Netflix!
Solid advice, Joey!
Tomorrow is my birthday and I'm building my first planted tank. I've been watching you for about 2 months now and I have been inspired greatly to get back in this hobby. Just wanna say thanks for uploading great content and having such a good spirit about helping people.✌
We need more videos like this! Edit- I don't want you to have more sick fish. Just want more information like this
You showed us a very important lesson. One many hobbyist don't take serious. Thank you.
I love that you made this video. It's such a common problem in this hobby, and this video will help a lot of people save their fish.
Love how educational this video was, I never was certain what ick really was! Thanks Joey, glad your fish are all doing well.
Dang Ich. Glad you got it cleared up! Im a fan of Ruby Reef Kick Ich which covers ichs whole cycle. Loving Frank in his new tank!
Man it's hard to pay attention to your explanation of the ich life cycle when Frank is having so much fun with the bubbles in the background.
Thanks for your honesty and telling your fans. Most folk would act like nothing happened and just would move on but you took this and turned it into a learning tool. I’m glad that you caught it early and it didn’t cause havoc on the rest of your fish.
I have no want to ever get into this hobby. But you're a genuine guy and your videos are still fun to watch. have a great day!
I think you should do more educational things like this. Really interesting and helpful.
Thanks man. This is very knowledgeable, trustable information. I can’t even tell you how much of a better fish keeper I am because of you. Much appreciated
Has to be the best explained video on ick it Will definitely help everyone especially the ones new into fish keeping
Really great video man. Informative, honest and interesting. Lovely stuff.
Absolutely love the transparency. Definitely one of the better explanations of the problem as well. Thank you! And happy belated birthday! 🤙🏼
I love the shimmering of the water below the waterline in the 2kg. It seems the new background really shows it off since I didn't notice it before. Thank you for reminding us of the importance of quarantine, as well as how to treat ich. Another great video, thanks again!
Boy he loves being married I don’t think he’s ever showed his ring as much as he has this video lol
Thanks Joey. You’re getting back to your teaching roots! 👍
Frank looks SO HAPPY in his new tank!
One of the best explanations I've heard and I've worked for LFS as a specialist before. glad to see you tackled the problem head on. and no matter what you do, you will always catch backlash. Thanks Joey
Watching this video on my phone while my boyfriend plays his game, didn't realise he was listening until I hear "damn this guy really knows what he's talking about" leads to a 30 minute conversation on quarantining and infection control. King of DIY bringing couples together haha
how dare you distract him from his game like that...
sneaking in a "conversation" during game time, you control freak you!!
groggy greg I'm a pro at sneaking in conversation got to tear his attention from warframe to me somehow! :)
As much as we learn from your successes we learn so much from your slip ups as well. Your honesty in the realities both positive and negitive also allows the new fishkeeper to not get discouraged when things dont go to plan. Thanks for another great video.
I was too distracted by frank to pay attention to the useful information he gave. Frank is such a good fish.
And it all started with a net. It’s so simple, it kind of blows my mind.
Constantly learning new things when I watch your videos keep up the good work Joey
Awwww. Frank is playing in the veil of bubbles. I love you Frank!
Thank you for your open honesty.. I appreciate this truly.. Thank you, hope everyone is ok..
Thanks for giving us your honesty on the bad side that fish keeping sometimes brings. If the King of DIY still has some issues the odd time , it makes us feel more human with the hobby!
Ive learnt so much from you and Rachel O'Leary ( The fish Pimp 👊🏻)
Sorry missed the explanation - was watching Frank play in the bubbles
thanks for being honest. Videos like this are more helpful than you think.
If all anybody sees is videos of how great fish keeping is, then they aren't ready for the many challenges. Thanks for sharing both the good and the bad, to give a realistic impression. I had my new fish 3 weeks before the ich appeared. I knew something was wrong on my birthday when three of my pregnant guppies dropped fry and another absorbed hers. The girls got thin and pale overnight. Spent the next day trying to figure out what was wrong with the water parameters when I spotted a couple white spots. I cross contaminated that community 10 gallon with my other betta tanks and the new 5 gallon that the male guppies were moved to. Used the same cleaning tools without taking the proper precautions, moved decor to another tank, my bad. So far, after the first treatment, the fry are still ok but the fish that came in sick was the one that absorbed her fry and may not make it. I noticed other signs of illness before the ich spots appeared. I'll tell you, my cleaning process will have some new protocols and I will always quarantine for a solid month from now on.
I love when you show every aspect of the fishtanks, everyone loves to act like their tank is "Just perfect" it's just not so. It's being proud of the downside and the upsides that makes the better fish person. Not what the tank looks like now.. This can happen to ANY of us guys.. Thanks for sharing joey!
One of your BEST Video Joey !! I learn SO MUCH from you
I dont speak english at all and you know what ? I understand your language perfectly fine because you talk for we understand !! You take the right time for your viewers and this is amazing you the BEST !! I fellow you from QUEBEC and im wearing your FISHKEEPER TSHIRT You amazing I never had the Ick but I know I will have one day and your video gonna save my fish I just wanted to say you that WE LOVE YOU
man I love your videos because you treat your fish very good with nice tanks compared to other people I see on UA-cam
Ick is very common in the fish keeping hobby and easily treated. Joey forgot to mention this but if you treat with any medication, remove any activated carbon in your filter.
Aaden Trn Agreed he forgot to mention it, though it was probably because he's stated he doesn't use any carbon.
Aaden Trn it's a stress induced parasite. Good news is in a giant tank it spreads slow. Bad news is once established it becomes like a flu plague of the Cascade effect on them. But like you said very easy to treat if done promptly at first signs by raising salinity slightly and keeping the lights on 24/7 to get them out of the cyst while dosing with a mild anti parasitic medicine.
I had to learn the hard way to quarantine. Had one molly take out my entire tank of mollies. Joey you are so right, proper quarantine procedures are extremely important!
Lol sorry they were sick, but I kept smiling looking at Frank play with the bubbles
awww, our birthdays are a day apart. Happiest Birthday, Joey! Thank you for the informative video on Ich. Definitely one of the most common maladies for beginners.
Great video. I was wondering if you could talk about sick fish in another in more depth. Like how and when to know to treat with meds and how to know what is affecting your fish and how and what to do when you know there's something wrong but it's internal so you don't know what it is of what to do about it. As well as what causes our fish to get sick of get ich when it's a case of no new fish and water quality is good. This would help me so much . I haven't found any info on this topic and would love to know what to do in this situation. Thank u. And as always another awesome video from the king! Love you man. Can't wait for the next one.
Absolutely phenomenal detailed explanation on the most common and under explained aquarium problem thank you. Your are extremely knowledgeable about all of this and it's one of the things I love the most, this hobby.
I just wonder who the hell dislikes joeys videos. seriously this guy literally helps us out and ig some of us just dislike for no reason
Maybe those who find his net-crosscontamination thing a really noob mistake (which it is, in essence) ;) But we're just people, right? He admitted it and I'm not the one who disliked it, to make things clear.
Weirdly, I'm kinda glad this video got posted today. One of my fish has gotten sick and I've been at a total loss for what's wrong with him. With Joey talking about his being unwell, I feel like it's not just me, and everyone has to deal with it. I don't have to feel so useless v.v
Good luck with your fish!
jonstfrancis Thank you! His colour is still off, but he's not lying on the bottom anymore. I'm just relieved, lying on the bottom is usually a death sentence.
I have had my Oscar for almost a month and all of the sudden.... Ich. Battling it now. My Oscar seems to be in better spirits in only 24 hours of treatment. Thanks for the advice. I learned to assume Ich is always present.
Amazing video - by the time Joey was speaking about the air stone creating a larger surface area in the tank (and thus helping to solve an oxygen issue) I was genuinely astonished by his knowledge! This guy is sincerely an expert in the field and we are lucky to have him...
I'm totally listening but, Frank playing in the bubbles :D
This is great. Nice shot with the frank tank in the back.
Frank is so distracting doing barrel rolls in the background he's such a ham I love it😊😊
Such a common parasite. Great video. Love the explainations, I shared your video to my fb fish page for everyone.
u ar the best at ur job u don't deserve them to be sick
So much great info. Glad your fish are all ok. I have to mention that seeing Buddy do his little flips behind you when you were at your desk made my day.
Frank not Buddy. Buddy passed away.
Yeah, my meds were kicking in. lol I knew it didn't sound right when I typed it. :(
amazing content in this video, things that many aquarists already know but would like to have had this explained this well at the start of their hobby. this video should be liked more and easier to find on youtube for new aquarists to learn from
Thank you! I’m going through an ich crisis and this video helped immensely! Thank you.
FRANK IS LOOKING AWESOME !!! Would having individual nets for each tank make a difference?
Thanks for always being honest with fishkeeping!
Would you consider leaving the camera running for like an hour on a different tank each week? Maybe with some tunes on top.
Would be cool. Tres cool.
Josh Sancho this!
like the eagle cams sounds cool to me
Thank you for stressing the need for quarantine. I myself have received so much grief for even suggesting that people would have much fewer problems with their tanks if only they were to quarantine any new fish for six weeks.
I stress quarantine for everything including fish, invertebrates and plants. Even on your DIY Fishkeeper FaceBook page I get attacked for even suggesting such a thing.
Like you, I rarely have problems with illness in my tanks.
However about six months ago one of my big tanks blew a seam and I had to partially rebuild and reseal it.
Shortly afterward this tank was inundated with bloat and I lost several of my favorite breeding Angels and all my scaleless fish from that tank.
That said........
The sickness came and went without me being able to identify the actual cause of the problem and my plants and fish are slowly returning to "normal" with no losses for the last 9 weeks.
Again, thank you for stressing the need for quarantine.
If they won't listen to me, Hopefully they WILL listen to you.
I don’t understand why people would have to QT invertebrates, they almost never have any diseases. Quarantining corals make sense cause they almost always have parasites like flatworms and sea stars. But I do believe that anybody MUST QT, especially is saltwater because 99.9% of marine fish are from the wild and have a very long collection/shipping process. These fish come very stressed and skinny.
I lost an entire tank of mollies in a week after adding two apple snails and a mini crab to it.
Was it something with the inverts?
I don't know, but I'll never do that again!
its very hard to listen when frank is playing with those strong bubbles joey -_-
Kudos to you for sharing this Joey. Ich is a pain in the wrong place for millions of fishkeepers around the world. The bad part is that it can stay unseen for long periods and hit when least expected; the good part is that if the fish survive the outbreak their immunity against a reinfection goes up greatly.
Thanks Joey. Can you consider doing a video series on common fish problems/medications and how to deal with sick fish?
In the 10 years I have been making videos, this was the first time I had a sick fish to use as an example. I prefer to h e examples and results rather than just saying what to do.
understandable. however for those of us who are newbs we have little or no idea of hbow to deal with a sick fish, what to do or where to even begin to look for information. with res[ect.
A lot of guys wouldn't admit to making any mistakes. But, that's how we learn. And by making your mistake public, we can all learn from it. Thanks for that. I'm kind of glad it happened too, seeing as how everything turned out all right.
Frank loving that air stone in the background
Happy belated birthday Joey ! Thanks for the info on ick
Joey, Thanks for the very useful video. You know what will be a good series? Educational videos of different type of fish sickness and how to treat them! I just lost 2 fishes from H.I.T.H. My Oscar pass away from age 13+, he was too old and his swim bladder was "damaged" or something. He pass away so I got a new Red Tiger Oscar baby, he was BEAUTIFUL. He was doing very good in the tank but it didn't notice he was sick AT ALL. He had some damage on the head, which I thought it was from fighting with other fish! But it never really got heal. The fish also has some damaged fin and some very very very small pin hole size dots on his body which I thought it was from fighting my baby red jewel(which is 3 times smaller than him). Then he had more holes on his body and he stopped eating after a short time. From doing not too bad to death only took 4 days. I did use some Melafix for the tank for "healing" the fish which I thought was damaged from fighting. Then after the Oscar die, I took him out and look very closely on the body, then I finally notice it was not damage from fighting, it was H.I.T.H. It is VERY hard to notice in such small size and the "holes" are really really really small.....and it got bad VERY quickly. After that I check the tank again, my pleco was also dead! He was in the same spot for over 20 hours? Then I finally check him..he was dead for A LONG TIME before the Oscar. I have no idea what killed him. He was 5 times bigger than other fishes in the tank and I notice he was hanging himself with his head toward the bottom of the tank and tail up facing the surface for few days near the top of the tank. I remember when pleco about to die, they do that. I didn't notice that right away again of cause. All my fishes lived for a long long time, stuffs like that just slip your mind. My pleco was over 8 years old and the cause of death is .....unknown. I actually NEVER find out how any of my Plecos die in the past, They all got very old. My Oscar, however....I only had him for 3-4 months.... After that I had to rethink the way look at my fishes, look extra hard for sign of sickness so I can treat them the right way and save their lifes!!!!
Thanks for sharing your expertise and success!
Great informative video. Love your choice on pronunciation "Leave me alone." Haha. You go Joey.
I'm new to the hobby your videos are very informative and great. I really appreciate all the information
This is my biggest fear amongst my fish. I'm scared of losing them from cross contamination, the way Solidgoldaquatics was devastated, for example.
Happy Belated Birthday Joey. Glad the fish are better.
Best fish tank video I've seen so far as someone whose dealing with ich and a begginer, i need a you tube fish guy lol, so im subscribing thanks
Loved learning about diseases. More please! I am in love with your Angel fish tank. Breathtaking. They're my second favorite freshwater fish, Bettas are my favorite. But your Angels are what made me subscribe, and your content has me looking forward to your videos.
Joey : so let's go through the cycle of iche!
Stien : OK Frank start photo bombing and posing!
Random red rainbow : hi Joey! Hi Joey! Feed me!
Frank: shut up Joey! They are here to see me! *starts acting really cute behind Joey *
Awesome commitment to your fish. This was really helpful.
I wonder why so many people are telling him what medication he should use. He showed us the step how he medicated. You guys should watch the video before you comment.
i literally just got some first symptoms of ich before i saw this. this really helps
Frank loves the bubble bar in his tank! He’s getting a bubble massage.
Andrea Shelton I was watching him do that, he's so cute!!
Learned so much from this video. I work in a pet store (we don’t have fish, but we have supplies )and you have helped me learn so much!
Frank loves the bubbles!!
Great vid, Thanks for sharing
Professor Joey and his white board
Joey, I appreciate that you show when things go wrong and own up to your mistakes and show us how to fix it. I believe that its the best way to show that these things happen to everyone regardless of someone's experience level.
"February 18th" this dude in the future
Thank you for uploading this. It took 2 weeks for it to appear. This is my first time dealing with Ich.
So informative.. thank you joey ..you're the best :)
Thank you so much for posting this! I love that you post the bad as well as the good! ❤️
Nic Video my koi is suffering from infection this will help me
And please more video about taking care from infection
This was very informative, thank you. Love your videos.. Can you maybe do a series on the different common health issues you might expect with you fish, and how to treat them? We just lost our little betta to dropsy, and couldn't find anything informative as to how to treat it or look for symptoms of the sick in the fish. In fact any time he were sick, we mostly had to guess for the cause and treat by that estimat. Do you have any chart or book you refer to incase of sickness in your aquariums?
Sofie Richter Damm ooh yes! I second this
Ok...who else could only focus on frank in the background playing in the bubbles.
I'm glad you made this video so I know what to do if I get a fish with ICH.
Don't have fish. Don't want fish. I'm only here for the arm porn. Bless you and your tight DIY shirt, Joey!
Spitting Kitty I mean he goes have a nice rack... ing system
Joey, Thanks for this video, this was one of the ones that I really enjoyed (I really enjoy all of them) because I learned so much. I've never dealt with Ich, but that doesn't mean I won't ever deal with it. I found this really informative and broken down barney style. It really gave me the tools to understand Ich and treat it in the future. Thank you!
Frank is so cute swimming in the bubbles
Thanks for this. We can all use a reminder now and then to keep up good practices, and it's important to remember sometimes it's the little things that slip by that will come back to bite you; glad your event was manageable, and created a teachable moment for everyone.
Who else watched frank play in the bubbles😂😂😂
