You are quickly becoming one of my favorite fish channels. Your content is always straight forward, honest, and easy to understand. I love it!
I took in a betta from my work; a woman had surrendered him and another because she was moving. Said they were both healthy, she just couldn't take them with her. Yeah right: both of them had severe fin rot, clamped fins, and the one I took (a coworker took the other) was covered in velvet. After 2 weeks of aggressive treatments with malachite green, frequent water changes, blackouts, and 84°F water, he fully recovered and even changed color from green to blue. His tail will never be like a typical crowntail again, but he's healthy, active, and certainly not suffering from neglect anymore.

What were the symptoms of your fish’s Velvet disease ? I am suspicious of this on my Betta. He is eating though normal.

Would love to give you an update! My guppy at 4:20/min with Dropsy is now healthy and cured! I was feeding to much brine shrimp! Followed these steps showen in the video and now he is a happy healthy fish! 😍🐟❤

Two things I'd add is that many of the medications recommended will kill invertebrates like shrimp and snails. And not all medications are okay for loaches and some catfish--the so-called scale-less fish.
I agree. Especially malachite green, copper and salt are very dangerous for these fish, especially for corydoras.
I lost my betta a couple days ago, and I unfortunately had to learn a lot of hard lessons on illness and tank maintenance. Really helps having your channel to go to, now if I ever have a sick fish I'll know what to do right away. Thanks guys!

I treat fin rot and swim bladder for bettas very simply. Hospital tank, aquarium salt, and daily water changes. Raising the temp to 82 degrees Fahrenheit and add Indian Almond Leaves help too.
I'm scared to use aquarium salt now. I was doing a treatment for my betta with suspected fin rot well he died this month due to the aquarium salt. I followed instructions from a person who claimed they knew what they were doing and that it would work to clear it. Now I have a cycled ten gallon tank that sits empty.

I've actually never dealt with ich, even in my fish keeping days as a kid when I kept bettas in a gallon or less or dalmation mollies in a 10 gallon, and didn't know what cycling actually was... And I got all my fish from chain stores.
A couple months ago, my new male betta developed cloudy eye though. I'd only had him for a few days and he'd been frantically glass surfing most of that time. I had a lava rock near one tank wall, so I think he may have scraped it. I vacuumed the tank and moved things around the day before it developed and he'd followed the vacuum around, so I think the eye became infected. I immediately dosed the tank with Paraguard and the next day he was already improving. I continued treating for a week even after he looked better and haven't had any more issues. I removed the lava rock, also. After he settled in, he stopped glass surfing.
I'm not entirely sure if she had gill flukes, but one of my platies had been acting weird for a week already, so when I saw her suddenly start flashing, I decided to quit waiting for more signs of illness and treat the tank with General Cure. The next day, she was already improving, but I continued following the instructions to finish the treatment and she's been healthy ever since.

you forgot the most dreaded disease of all - MTS. It spreads from fishkeeper to fishkeeper. There is no cure 😢. Seriously though - great video as always

Yes! That disease is spreading through my home still to this day. I haven't found a cure for this one either and its lasted for years!
The best medication I have ever used for my fish is tea tree oil. Since using this I have had no problems in my tank. I use a little bit of it in every water change and now I finally have a happy healthy tank.
It works great, I use Melafix which has Melaleuca leucadendra (very similar to tea tree melaleuca oil)
Would this work for columnaris?
@@christophercasanas386 from what I've read and my personal experience, most medications you find at the pet store won't cure columnarus. I had to euthanize 5 bettas I recently had shipped to me because the stress compromised their immune system.
My rope fish and bichir absolutely do not tolerate melafix/tea tree oil. I will never use it with them that’s for sure. Cichlids handled it just fine but my guys that hunt by smell just lost their minds, I felt so bad and thought I killed them. I did a water change immediately and all was well, but just a experience I thought I’d share.
I love your videos! It's so nice to sit and watch someone who is obsessed with fish and owns it lol I've been obsessed since I was a child. It would be really cool if you could do a video sometime on native North American fish, I am almost exclusively a native fish and reptile keeper and I'd be intrigued to see what you'd have to say on the subject!
I saved my one betta from our local all in one grocery store...his cup had algae and was full of poop...he has cloudy eye from that cup, I've tried everything, but nothing helped...after having him for two months, his glow up is incredible!! A brand new betta 💙

My Australian Bass got cloudy eye I went through the tests and worked out that the PH was only 5.4 ,so after large water changes over the next few weeks and adding some coral rubble to the tank it seemed to fix it.

This is a great video! there are thousands of videos out there but very few talk about aquarium diseases. If all fish are lost to disease in a tank, how safe is it to start adding new fish? does the tank need to be re-started? what about fish TB?
I've actually had some success with separating fish with ich into a hospital tank without having to treat my whole tank. Have to catch it early and check every day for fish that may have been affected and move them over, but normally after three days I can't find any more fish with ich in the main tank.

hello thanks for the video, I thought that my fish had bacterial fin rot and also some fungus growing on her and I've been trying to treat them separately and things weren't working. Thank goodness I ran into your video because it made me realize she had columnaris and I need to treat her differently. Do you have specific antibiotics that you recommend? or just any antibiotics will work?

I had a pearl gourami who had a bad case of swim bladder and I lightened up on feeding and tried peas but nothing seemed to work, I switched to New Life Spectrum probiotix and it cleared up in a few days...it also helped me to curb some crazy algae growth in the tank

Stress. My 0skie recently started to sulk and avoid eating. I figured it was because i moved a piece of furniture near the left side of his tank. He was used to just seeing a white wall there, but now I guess he was shocked to see something different there...i hope he gets back to normal soon.

Idk if dropsy is different for goldfish but the info I researched for when my goldfish got dropsy is very different from this. Like Dropsy can't really be caught early cause as soon as the fish bloats up and pinecones up it often too late. But maybe it is just different for goldfish I'm not sure
As far as I know, dropsy is only a symptom of a desease so sometimes it can be cured. Dropsy can be caused by organ failure (most likely not treatable), which results in issues with osmosis regulation, leading to an accumulation of fluids in the body and under the scales (pineconing). If this is the case, the fish will most likely die but I also read about a case where the fish suddendly became healthy again (As far as I remember, they suspected s kidney stone).
Constipation can also make the fish bloat (increasing the temperature and not feeding anything might help). Damage in the intestines (caused by an accident or internal parasites) that lead to inflammation could also be the cause for dropsy.

That was my bolivian ram with Cloudy eye. Unfortunately it occured about 2 days after recieving him and i beleive it was due to aggression with another ram. After a week of trying to clear it up it only seemed to get worse. I inevitably returned it and the other to my lfs and i guess i wasnt the only one according to them.
Could you do a video on cold water aquariums? I have axolotls and am quite new to keeping aquariums PROPERLY, I’ve had fish before when I was younger but I now know they weren’t kept ideally and I like your channel :)

Hi John, I watch your videos and they are absolutely great and quite informative, However I always wondered if you could use water from the reverse osmosis filtration and if so, what should be the TDS value for the water? for the aquarium.
My little buddy started with ick I fixed him up but now he has fin rot and only had a stump on the end, he's a small comet and he hasn't grown but he's a tough dude, I've used aquarium salt and e. m erythromycin and he's been doing alot better, I recently went to petsmart and got pimafix also, he has grown most of his fin back and half of his body turned black but is now coming back to his original color, thanks to you guys and the product my buddy is going to live👍💛
Thanks for doing this video. I've got a female betta fish in a hospital tank with such bad swelling I couldn't work out if it was constipation or dropsy. I tried Esha 2000 first, and almond leaf with Epsom salt dip's and very small amounts of food. I'm now trying anti internal bacteria +, Epsom salt dips and some aquarium salt in the water, still only small amounts of food. I'm in the UK and there doesn't seem to be antibiotics for fish. my last hope is trying a pea. (lots of clean water of course) :(

In my ten gallon I have 2 mollies, 3 guppies, 2 silver dollars and 3 snails. In my 29 gallon I have 1 red zebra cliched, 2 jack Daniel cliches, 2 catfish and 2 other ciclids. Keep the videos coming! One of my bettas died from dropsy, and I was sad when he died. My koi used to have Ich, but they recovered due to me giving them medicine every other day
Good video. I wish you could have given more info on swim bladder issues. I have a black Molly that has been swimming on it's side for about a month now. I've tried everything from aquarium salt to Epsom salt baths. Antibiotics because the fish had some white stuff on it just prior to getting swim bladder disease. I even tried the peas but I haven't been able to get her to eat them.
I used to have fancies and they would get swim bladder problems. The peas worked for me because the problem was caused by constipation and the peas helped things move along.

I know that this is over a year old but I just started following your vids from the UK. I'm really impressed by the info and really helpful so big thanks. One question, after keeping Oscars for over 15 years I have had first hand experience of HITH, what's your opinion on the link between the disease and the use of carbon in filters? All I can say is I've only ever seen it in a fish where carbon has been used so personally I don't use carbon in my Oscar tank anymore.

Hi. Thank you for all of the great videos. How about one on cleaning a tank after there has been disease in it. For instance, I rescued a BEtta, who it turned out had columnaris. He was in a 10 gal tank which I broke down after he was gone (didn't respond to treatment. Very sad...). I know this a highly contagious disease; so, I want to sterilize/super clean the tank before reusing it. What is a good safe way to do this? Also, how do a clean the heater and filter (HOB)? Thank you.

my silver dollars and tiger shovel nose had bad ick recently. turned up the temp go 86, did a 30% water change and added aquarium salt and they made a full recovery in about 2 days.
My Red Devil just recovered from Columinaris about a month ago. He is doing great and I'm trying to stay on top of my tank to keep him healthy. I've been doing bi-weekly water changes and gravel cleaning. When I change the water over I use prime as my water conditioner and API stress-zyme and Quick Start too. The only problem is that my water is still getting cloudy and I just want to keep it clear and ideal to keep the big guy healthy. Any recommendations? Also, what product combos do you recommend for tank maintenance? Thank you!

Pretty sure general cure‘s antibiotic ingredient is metronidazole if I remember correctly, so that would explain why it helps with HITH

Did you even watch the beginning? John explained he doesn't have footage for every disease. Some people allowed him to use their personal footage but others aren't so kind.

I had a platy that suffered from fin rot, fortunately I noticed and treated them, however they lost their fin as I noticed too late. They are happy and healthy now

My african butterfly has mouth fungus and my angels keep getting fin rot. What should I do to help prevent this later?
I have glowlight tetras and they are sick. They have white indents in their head or small bumps growing under there skin. They have curved gills and white stuff peeking out but not moving and not fuzzy. They only look hurt on their head, the rest of their bodies are fine. A few stopped eating for a while and the smallest one went to the top of the tank for the night and died the next day, all of them before they died went to the top of the tank or hid and looked pale. My water conditions are good, my friend filtration is good everything in my tank is good. None of my other fish are showing symptoms. I would really really appreciate some help, this has been happening over a period of months. I have no idea what is is or what to do. I've tried treating with an all-in-one treatment but it hasn't worked. Please could you give me some help?
I've been told to use the trio of medication for QTING fish but I also heard that erythromycin kills the nitrifying bacteria in the tank. How am I suppose to medicate my tank now without the cycle crashing putting the stressed fisj at risk for ammonia poisoning.
Great video! I don't believe ich is in all environments. You can eradicate it from your ecosystem and not all fish come in with it, only some are the original host. I use Ruby Reef Kick Ich in combo with Ruby Reef Rally to eradicate it if seen.
L.R.Bretz's Aquatics Agree, my LFS recommended Kick-Ick. I have used it (by itself) and find it to be very effective. I have yet to use Rally.

In my experience, new fish from the local places always get sick pretty fast. I don't know if they are selling tainted fish (likely they are buying from the same stockists as they get shipments the same days) or if it's just the stress of shipping, buying, etc. Anyhow, is there anything I can do to my tank preventatively before stocking? Assuming I've cycled it properly, is there anything I can add when I add fish? A little aquarium salt, maybe? Or will everything make more stress? I expect to be stocking a tank for myself and one for my daughter in the coming weeks. Cycling now. (referring strictly to initial stocking or for the quarantine period) Freshwater tropical tank, btw.

Wow great video! I'm stocking my 1st aid kit now so that I have things on hand when needed. I just discovered we can't get over the counter pet Antibiotics here in Canada anymore. They have to come from a vet. I think even "General Cure" has been taken off the market here as well. Can you guys suggest alternatives to those?
The best anti bacterial medication I know is baktopur by sera. It contains methylen blue and acrivlavinium. It has never noticably harmed one of my fish (mostly corydoras) and worked in most cases. I always dose at least 120 up to 180 percent of the recommended dosage on three instead of two days because this was recommended to me. The medication should be protected from light and should be used in a newly set up hospital tank because it often does not work in established tanks. Additional aeration (air stone) is recommended too. You might not see any effect up untill the fifth day of treatment.

Kyle Delaney this just happened to us. We went from 7 to 0 fish in less than 36 hours. We bought 2 new fish on Friday and by this afternoon everyone was dead. I’m very upset :(

I am on my third betta from Petco that is sick (I have had betta fish before, so not a new keeper). Got two with fin rot/body rot. Had to return them. Now I have one with popeye... I even bought a new tank! I do not want to keep returning fish because I know that they will probably just die. Trying the salt trick and will get antibiotics tomorrow! Fingers crossed this will work!
For the cloudy eye issue you mentioned in your video I did a water change and I noticed The next day one of my fish had cloudy eye I panicked like we all do looked online and somebody mentioned check your ph i checked my PH up and It crashed to around 6 I put ph in and within 8 hours I noticed the difference within 24 hours it was gone
about a crowded tank, a general rule 30 yrs ago was on inch of fish per gallon of water. does that still hold true?

I just wanted to let you know that dropsy is not always caused by bacteria. It's a symptom in fish where fluid is accumulating due to bacteria or kidney problems or it can be other things. I have a couple fish with this and I think I may have caused this so it's pretty upsetting. Thank you guys for the video on fish diseases, I've learned a lot about diseases I haven't seen yet so maybe I will be prepared if something happens 🙂
So here, i saw a dead cockroach in my 50gallon tank. I even saw a leg on my yellow lab and immediately took them out. I did a 30% waterchange, after a couple of days, my white tail acei got swim bladder, i took her out and put in a hospital tank with her scales deteriorating and does have mucus like shedding off of her and my rusty got bloated. Did the cockroach do anything to spoil my tank? Thank you and nice vids as always!
One of my Glo-Fish Tetras got swim-bladder illness, I believe... and let me tell you: It's strange looking at your tank one day and seeing one of your fish doing loop-de-loops!😯
Swimming in loops is whirling disease. Search it on Google. I can rarely save them when that happens also. 💙
@@ashleybenson8688 Well, the one that suffered from it is long-gone... I just kept it until it was having such difficulty swimming straight, it couldn't even fed itself properly. At that point it was time for the hardest part of pet keeping: A mercy killing. I'd didn't like that I had to do it, or how because of my budget and available materials, but I did it... and thankfully, it was over quickly.😔

At 3:35 there are gouramis. They have white stripes/patches at the start of their pelvic fins. Mine have the same but I thought it was finrot. Is this true or am I mistaken???

I think my betta sorority tank has velvet! One of my females looks bit gold on her face. I have no other tank and also i have snails in the tank.. how would you recommend I treat this? I did a water change today and turned the heat up a bit, also covered it in towels to block out the light.

This is great. I hope I never have to deal with any of these. I have a white stringy thing on one of my mollies. It mostly fell off this morning after I did a 30 minute salt bath but I hope it was just a harmless fungus. Going to do a salt bath to all my mollies to reduce any chance of disease or anything else.
What antibiotics do you recommend for columnaris? I could only find fin and body from api is that enough?
We just had a tank of 4 glo tetras and a plecko. Made a huge mistake and bought 2 more tetras. Within 30 hours the 4 I originally had got ich. We bought the ich medication and treated them. And within 48 hours both the two new ones who were eating great and swimming great started swimming erratic and dropped dead. The plecko was also found dead afterwards and he was doing great. The remaining 4 my originals were breathing so rapidly, at the top of the tank, completely coated in ich all over their eyes and their fins were starting to fall off. I have no idea how the tank became such a disaster in such a short amount of time and we had 7 fish and now have 0. Any thoughts on what to do different next time other than introducing new fish differently. I am newer to the hobby for my kids so no bullying me please lol.
I have a sorority guppy tank(all females) that I watched be born in a tank, once in awhile one will come down with ich,not alot of them but what would cause that in a random fish once in awhile? Can old age cause stress and/or cause a drop in immunity? I have had them for awhile.
I keep fancy goldfish, swim bladder is a thing that can occur easily especially in the more extremely shaped types. Fasting for 3 days, shelled peas, very clean water gives these fish the best chance.
I have a black moor that will overeat if the others don’t get in to feed quickly enough!
Tbh, I’ve also experienced fin rot and cloudy eye when I first got the fish and everything was cleared up with frequent water changes and getting a better feed being in a home setting. Must of caught it early enough but I’ve been lucky to not need any meds...I have them in stock but never had to use them yet!
But my dudes, if you have goldfish and haven’t fed them shelled peas yet I am telling you to please try! Not only does it clear everything out but damn do they love them! I regularly feed shelled peas at least twice a week now and not had any issues for quite some time!
My female betta was suffering from fin rot.. and my local mom and pop fish store owner/employees gave me a few things to treat it.. but I have had good success with two full doses API’s Triple sulfa and a week’s worth of Melafix treatments. Water changes accompanying these treatments as instructed.
My local fish guys say that fin rot is actually very easy to treat especially when caught early like most things.
