Pat, ever since we met at SGDQ 2019, I've been watching you get into content creation and always get excited for your new videos. So proud of you and how far you have come in the last 4 years!
@@CaptainJZH it's quite alright, they haven't put their pronouns up on their UA-cam channel yet although they have them up on their twitter, that's how I learned about it
Old fart gamer here. 3:13 - Minus world glitch was known back in the eighties. Not sure where I picked it up but somehow I learned of it and went there a few times as a kid. Video games are awesome. Dope video, Slick.
The minus world glitch was widely known when the Super Mario Bros 3 release occurred in Australia (which I believe was 1991). As a kid I entered a 'highest score on SMB1 in 5 min' event that was run by a chain of stores here (Myer) for SMB3's release, and all the winners used the big mario clip in 1-2 to get to 5-1, then did shell kicks and intentional deaths in 5-1 until time was out. (The left and right pipes in the unloaded warp zone go to the minus world, middle to 5-1)
Normally, a game is considered complete when you reach a finality state. SMB1 has no credits, so a credits warp is impossible. However, after you beat 8-4, you effectively unlock New Game Plus. FDS -3 also triggers New Game Plus, so it should count as a completion method, as it's essentially skipping 8-4 and going straight to the credits. For FDS, anyway. (Even if there was no New Game Plus, the game would still kick you to the title screen, which it wouldn't do if it didn't load another level because 37-1 was invalid, nor if you beat normal 4-4.) It would be SO degenerate to call this Any% and rename the old Any%. TL;DR: If FDS -3 isn't beating the game then all the credits warps other speedruns have are also not beating the game
I could see the argument that the "credits" for SMB is the Princess saying your quest is over. Since you still get the "Princess is in another castle" at the end of -3, it thus wouldn't count as completion.
Your videos are getting better and better. This was very well paced, informative, entertaining and found a great balance between explaining the run itself and the tricks, and the story of the speedrunners.
Appreciate it! I’m definitely still at a point where each video is experimental in some way. Definitely want to make more down this route in the future if I can find the right topics!
Awesome video, love it ♡ Small note: infamous means notoriously evil, not sure if I would call the minus world glitch something negative (pun unintended) at all :)
@@kelzstackz4503"a small problem or fault that prevents something from being successful or working as well as it should" applies to minus world. is true. is not necessary a negative depending on your opinion on glitches.
I think I just realized something! The - isn’t actually a minus, but the dash that normal goes in the middle, and there’s no first number! ”why does this matter?” you ask? …idk :|
It actually matters in the japanese cartridge version. Since the FamiCom doesn't have the game-resetting lockout chip, you can (but really shouldn't) hotswap cartridges, and data from the first game will remain in RAM. FamiCom Tennis was used to program targets for the minus world glitch in the japanese community, as the score sat in the RAM address the glitched warp pipe is reading. Then they realized Family BASIC exists and you can use a POKE to set any value into any RAM address with one command. So that glitched warp pipe can go anywhere, not just 36-1.
Should totally count as a completion. It’s basically the same thing if you cheated Mario galaxy The cutscene plays and you unlock a harder replay which is counted as a completion for that game
Technically the different level loading isn't a fault of the disk format. The way the FDS works, is it loads the data from the disk into a buffer, and the RAM adapter holds that data as though it were a regular ol' cartridge.
I just finished the video i swear it felt like 8 minutes my jaw literally dropped when i saw 40 minutes (i just clicked on it without checking how long it was lol) Other than that, Awesome video i enjoyed it from start to end :)

Yeah, there's a persistent confusion in the english-speaking community between the FamiCom and the FamiCom Disk System. The FDS is an add-on for the FamiCom, not the base system. A japanese Super Mario cartridge is identical to the US version, but a japanese Super Mario disk is not.
Because there are different categories. Any% is defined as beating Bowser because that gives you the congratulations message that marks the end of the game.
Also nostalgia. People mostly don't remember the disk version of the game. Alsoalso, the hardware is less readily available. There's far fewer FDS expansions than there are base FC and NES decks, and honestly once you expend that effort... why not get a 2j/Lost Levels disk instead? Go for main run prestige instead of weird glitch "technically clear".

Kosmic cracks me up. He hops into a category, sets some records, breaks a barrier or two, then decides he's done with that one and hops to another.
Update: Niftski has lowered the WR to 2:30.219, using the Fast Accel Setup in -3 and an extremely good clip!

Technically the different level loading isn't a fault of the disk format. The way the FDS works, is it loads the data from the disk into a buffer, and the RAM adapter holds that data as though it were a regular ol' cartridge.
The FDS RAM Adapter ALSO contains the FDS BIOS ROM, which is mapped into memory in the same address space.
