It's quite likely that it's very much fixable. Those things were built rugged. If you get more involved with the matter, you might be able to do it. It could be a badly oxidized power switch only. All 3 generations of Game Boy need cleaning of their power switches on occasion.
If it’s a screen issue then it’s probably just a failing zebra connector. If it’s audio then probably caps. If it’s power then make sure everything is cleaned. Not much to go wrong on an original GB.

why I have a strong feeling that someone turn the sharpness option from the default +3 to +0 for analogue pocket part? (and ontop of that not using the GBC LCD/LCD+ mode, sound like somebody want to portrait the device better than what it is)
The Analogue Pocket is not an emulator Instead, it uses Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology to recreate the hardware of classic gaming systems at a hardware level. This means: FPGA vs Emulation: Unlike software emulators, which simulate console hardware via code, the Analogue Pocket's FPGA mimics the original hardware circuits. This allows for near-perfect accuracy, as if you were playing on the original console. 2. Cartridge Support: The Analogue Pocket is designed to play original cartridges (Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, etc.), which is something most emulators don’t support directly.💎 Lastly , Additional Cores: While it is not an emulator, the Analogue Pocket can run FPGA cores for other systems like the NES, SNES, or Sega Genesis, provided they are developed and loaded onto the device. So guys therefore, in short, the Analogue Pocket provides an experience similar to emulation but achieves it through hardware replication rather than software simulation. Hope it helps to all
Great video but why not just get a used GBA and install the drop in IPS screen mods from funnyplay and then you have access to gb/gbc and gba games with a better form factor device and way cheaper

And even then... it's a Game Boy clone.
You literally only have ➕ 🅰️ and 🅱️ as the main movement and gameplay buttons. You'd think he could figure it out just by playing 😂
There’s literally only 6 useable buttons and part of them do the same thing 😂
@@dftfiretechnically not a clone. They actually worked with Rogers, Pajitnov, and the Tetris Company so it’s a real Tetris game
It really bothers me not being able to find a Sponsor that wasn't previously an addict.
6:56 thats what she said 😂😂😂
The moment you hear FPGA you know it's gonna be expensive as shit
I'm surprised the FPGA cult hasn't crucified linus for calling the pocket emulation.
it's hardware emulation
The background music in this video unironically goes HARD
I'm creating a game for Gameboy, it's interesting to see that there is still a console market for the game I'm making.
Man that sound
Correction! The original gameboy was awesome outdoors!
Very nicely done. I'm thinking about getting this for my kids so they can do "mobile gaming" without smartphone perils. Also, the games are actually good!
Buy an analogue Pocket ?
Grabbed an anbernic cube xx for tis reason, compromise between power and older games. The real cost is getting two micro sd cards you trust, in case the genaric cards they send end up dying. But yeah, if you have a collection of game boy / color games, or if a series like pokemon is life, either og hardware with an updated screen and a rechargable battery drop in, or a device like this.
9:35 wtf do you mean the original gameboy was designed to be played in bright light such as the sun it works much better outside than inside
I recently bought an original GameBoy Color with an IPS screen mod, which means you have a very modern screen in basically the old real hardware. And yes, gameboy games look amazing on it.
It's not just the resolution but also the sub-pixel alignment. Also, more accurate clock crystal than the FPGBC and Analogue Pocket.
Miss these games. Hehe.
You guys should do the r36s if your looking at retro consoles. Its the king of budget handhelds and will play anything from psx down for under 50 australian dollars.
the original gameboy did have a brightness slider or a contrast slider i guess.
Reading Weapons Dealer made a Game Boy made me think for a moment that Seto Kaiba had become real ( ´∀`).
Calling only the pocket emulation. Yes it's emulation but so is the mod retro. This is the second fpga game boy I've seen outside of analogue and that's a good thing. Means the boards are getting more common so the prices will come down
Would rather see a link to the actual product you're reviewing instead of a stupid selfie stick
Or you can just Google the damn name he already gave you a couple of times. Jesus Christ I swear people are so inconvenienced by the most minor things these days. Do the leg work yourself. Quit depending on others.
1:38 dang, for free Linus?
My "analog pocket" is an Rog Ally 😂
What the Bolt-M guy 😂 made a knock off "game Boy" hahaha
Looks expensive but worth it.
If a real weapons dealer made that gameboy. The buttons would be shell casings. 🤦 What a let down
I have an og gameboy somewhere and its just fully dead. Unfortunatly. I couldnt figure out how to fix it
It's quite likely that it's very much fixable.
There are guys online that do refurbishing of those, they even have some UA-cam channels. Maybe try doing that, those things are worth surprisingly a lot.
Glad Linus said fpga recreation. Emulation is the wrong term speaking about fpga devices. ☮️
But then he went and said the Analogue Pocket was emulation when it too is an FPGA
Hardware emulation is still emulation
@@SlickTater but it's not, that's like saying an x86 64 bit processor is emulating an x86 32 bit processor
an FPGA is able to become anything, x86, arm, riscv, etc etc. hell an FPGA can become a full nes, from top to bottom: ram, cpu, ppu, everything. is _that_ emulation? i don't thing so
@@aftdawn so they field-programmed a gate array to emulate several other processors but that’s not emulation?
@@aftdawn Yes, that is emulation. Getting tired seeing these same comments from people that have zero baseline knowledge of what an FPGA is.
Meanwhile I was willing to spend 3x's the price of the ModRetro for a SteamDeck OLED and now I can play almost every console known to man plus PC games on it. >:D
My iphone and samsung galaxy ultra plays all the older consoles. that chromatic screen though, that's a specialty.
It didn't have brightness but it did have contrast settings
FGPAs are quite expensive tbf. idk how powerful the one inside is ( you shouldn’t need a powerful one for the gameboy (color) but they might’ve gone overboard)
They should have compared it to a RG35XX device or some other emulation handheld just to show the difference in experience between these devices, like there is a difference between emulation and fpga, but is it worth 4x the difference if you are just casually playing Gameboy games
I’ve always suspected Linus as one of those “Old game bad because old” types. Ya know, the ones that never go back to older consoles or games because their age makes them inferior for whatever reason.
What I’m trying to say is he was the wrong person to film this video
3:11 *Game Boy Advance, not color. Color didn't have an IR sensor (at least mine didn't).
Color does have an IR sensor. Source my GB color here that has IR.
@@SanderEvers Interesting. Maybe my aunt gave me the poor-man's version as a kid. I'm retroactively angry.
Linus: I’m not really into Tetris
*literally forgets he’s filming while playing Tetris*
You said the pocket is emulation but the pocket is FPGA for GB, GBC, GBA.
Linus should be ashamed of his Tetris skills shown here.
Chromatic Tetris? So, Tertis DX?
Want. Too bad I have to go through GameStop to get the grey one.
The hell you mean $40 for a game..... Then again in the 90's games were $20-$30......and the GB color cost $90 so not too far off
If it plays original cartridges pretty sure it can be other types which I assume your aware of as well
Unusual time for LMG upload
The review will be subject to an embargo, and hence why the upload must be done now. You'll see many other channels drop a video on this product, subject to their own embargo times, taking into account global timezone differences
If it could charge Li-Ion batteries I'd consider getting this, but I'm deeply entrenched in PC emulation after ripping all my carts and have no interest in pulling them out of storage.
By an analogue Pocket?
@timetoshine2752 Why would I do that?
I'll be honest.. I love my old GBC, but it's just collecting dust and if you're re-releasing the GameBoy, because you see a market in it.. wouldn't it make way more sense to re-release the GameBoy Advance? Because the Advance could play all previous GB and GBC cartridges..
why I have a strong feeling that someone turn the sharpness option from the default +3 to +0 for analogue pocket part? (and ontop of that not using the GBC LCD/LCD+ mode, sound like somebody want to portrait the device better than what it is)
...GBC had a link port, didn't it?
The Analogue Pocket is not an emulator Instead, it uses Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology to recreate the hardware of classic gaming systems at a hardware level. This means:
FPGA vs Emulation:
Unlike software emulators, which simulate console hardware via code, the Analogue Pocket's FPGA mimics the original hardware circuits. This allows for near-perfect accuracy, as if you were playing on the original console.
2. Cartridge Support:
The Analogue Pocket is designed to play original cartridges (Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, etc.), which is something most emulators don’t support directly.💎
Lastly , Additional Cores:
While it is not an emulator, the Analogue Pocket can run FPGA cores for other systems like the NES, SNES, or Sega Genesis, provided they are developed and loaded onto the device.
So guys therefore, in short, the Analogue Pocket provides an experience similar to emulation but achieves it through hardware replication rather than software simulation.
Hope it helps to all
Yes
Meh, 3 AA batteries killed it for me
12:20 The buttons are quite clicky and loud it seems
i've already ordered one, no need to sell me on getting another one!
Great video but why not just get a used GBA and install the drop in IPS screen mods from funnyplay and then you have access to gb/gbc and gba games with a better form factor device and way cheaper
That looks nice, But I'd rather have a Nintendo Switch
Lol the entire sequence at 6:54 ...
FYI, it's $200 USD
For that much money, buy a used Switch AND a R36s.
With a lot of retro GameBoy devices on the market with a lot of emulation. Will it be time that Nintendo brings an new GameBoy on the market? With options to play the old cartidges or all the GameBoy games of NSO with NSO?
my aunt bought me a game boy when they were out only in japan
I think most fans know how are are at gaming
Any minute interest I may once have had in getting one of these disappeared when I heard the name "Palmer Lucky". Seriously, eff that guy.
