How to Arrange Drum and Bass Music | Minimal DNB Ableton Tutorial [Part 1]

  • Learn how to arrange drum and bass music with key concepts such as using call and response and various bass phrases to create a story. We demonstrate this with a minimal dnb track akin to music from Mefjus, Enei, Skeptical and Critical Music. This is Part 1 of the series.
To show you how to arrange drum and bass music, I first walk you through key concepts on arranging dance music by introducing one of the most popular drum & bass song structures. We then learn techniques such as call and response, removing certain sounds and adding effects to really create a strong 16 bar segment otherwise called a block. By the end of this video you should be on your way to creating a strong drum & bass song. Stay tuned for part 2 where we use the 16 bar block to arrange the entire song.

WOW you guys are keeping me on my toes, I didn't think we'd get there this quick! Here is the project. I've provided a STEMS project for those that don't have the VSTS, as well as a full project with the VST's. Have fun and let me know what you think! tinyurl.com/stranjah-minimal-dnb-pt1

I've been mucking around with production for years and have always struggled with my arrangements (Big fan of sound design) and this video has explained it nice and clearly without over complicating it. This is how i've tried to view production i just haven't been able to put 2 and 2 together. Big ups

Great work. Love the visualisation of the structure, you've managed to explain something I've only been able to express as "ohh man I love this bit!" for about the last 30 odd years of my life. Love the fact you've included the emotive side and explained where it keys in with your blocks. Brilliant stuff dude, keep it up. Great content.

I mainly produced techno in the past, and always admired dnb producers for being so precise and devoted, but such a complex arrangement seemed too hard to result in fun. Your videos are changing my mind, that's exactly the kind of content map i needed to score the structure of a track without worring about getting lost in details. Done that, I can finally proceed to the steps I love more, like bass design and mixing. Thank you very much, you're such a good educator and you deserve tons of exposure.

Most of this video is such common knowledge to me but I really enjoy going back and watching this series more specifically. I would love to know more about your theory on "Call and response". I think my music is missing so much of it and you really hone in on how powerful and necessary it is to music and making that " tension and release". thanks again man!

Another steller vid! I'm basically combining elements from all your videos together now. Used the drums from your jungle production kit for this one. Taking lots of time to experiment, make changes and apply techniques I've learned elsewhere to make things sound more my own. The amount of progress I've made since starting out a month ago is not at all what I imagined. Bless you, kind sir!
