The Guardians weren’t MCU Og’s, but came in at a time when I was still very much enraptured by what this cinematic universe had to offer. It was a true foray into the cosmic side of things, with characters who actually felt like losers at times, they would make mistakes and they had flaws that propelled their stories. It's hard to believe we’ve had 9 years of adventures across 7 appearances and saying goodbye to them, and this team was really quite emotional. Whilst I don’t think the movie is perfect, and it marks the twilight era of the superhero movie in spite of its quality, there’s no denying that I loved what it did get right, and it's a worthy conclusion to the Guardians story.
    Goodbye, Guardians.
I react to Guardians 3, and break down everything I loved and a few things I didn't. Join me in this analysis of what could be the best MCU trilogy!

Every villain Rocket fought was motivated by revenge. Drax in vol1 admits he almost got everyone killed because his anger and rage led him to revenge but just masked his loss. Thor admits he would kill Thanos because of revenge, but lost sight of what mattered and so Rocket lost everything he ever had. Quill, found out Ego killed his mother and so Rocket lost the only person who understood him...Yandu. and Quill found out Thanos killed Gamora and so Quill almost destroyed the universe.
Rocket didn't pull a Batman. Rocket very clearly understood where revenge leads, and what it costs. Not just your own soul, but of everyone around you.

"you aren't seeking perfection, you just hate the way things are." - what rocket said to the high evolutionary at the end hit me hard. i have a family member that has so much hatred of just about everything that they are blinded from seeing anything good in life. even the insecurities and self-hatred that led the high evolutionary down this path was pitch perfect.

As he kinda revealed by the "you just hate things the way they are" line and his anger at rocket figuring out how to make creatures less angry when evolving, he never cared about "fixing" the world, it was just due to his own narcissism that he was the way he was. No moral ambiguity here (which I think is a good thing, by the way), just an insecure guy who hates everything around him.

This was a better narratively-speaking way of showing how he has to live without the Gamora that was killed forever, whose personality and identity was shaped during the previous GOTG movies. Also showed how important identity is for her, being a stockholm syndromed orphan who probably needed a family more than a lover, and wouldnt leave the Ravagers to be with Star Lord. Smart writing, and very meta, as we are as frustrated with Gamora's apathy towards Guardians as Peter is

Maybe there's a villain but there wouldn't have to be. But ya like a family friendly peacemaker or something

Honestly, I don't mind what they did with Gamora in Vol. 3. While it would have been nice to continue the story with the Gamora we knew by Infinity War and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the fact is that 2014 Gamora had none of the experience that the Gamora we knew had. It would have been strange if Vol. 3 tried to act like nothing happened and that 2014 Gamora is the same Gamora we knew.

Yeah. That's a really odd criticism of the movie considering how much Gunn had to salvage from the broken parts The Russo's handed back lol. Gamora acting like this is tonally consistent. She acts like Nebula did in Vol 1. She never had her edges softened by Peter and rest of the Guardians. She's found a home with a group of equally rough space pirates.

I actually think other Gamora was my favourite part of the movie.
It was a great way to get to know the really old Gamora, the Gamora that Nebula grew up, was played out against and became incredibly bitter with, as she also remarks.
I also found it to strike a very nice balance between the bitter and sweet, definitely leaning more towards the former, in that it really exposed how attached Quill had become to Gamora while also, probably expecting a bit much, showcasing his temporary inability to let go of her - a central part of his arc for this movie.
Finally, I actually found it really satisfying somehow that the Guardians simply were a side adventure for her in favour of her real family being the Ravagers. I think it speaks to my conceptions about no relations being necessary and instead all contingent. We spend time with people, because we happened to cross paths I a world where many others were also open to us, not because of any deeper necessity.
To summarise, I really think she brought a lot of interesting relational dynamics into play, and that really worked for me.

This movie worked for me in all aspects. I'm actually really glad what they decided to do with Gamora because it felt real and relatable in the sense of a unwanted breakup. Although Peter and 2014 Gamora didn't break up, it essentially felt like that for Quil, because the Gamora he knew and loved was dead, but she's still alive at the same time. I went through a breakup were we both didn't necessarily want it at first and decided it was best for us and our own mental state. We didn't see or talk to eachother for 9 months. Then we stumbled across eachother. And like Quil I told her if she'd just open up to the idea - before being cut off by my "Gamora" to only say, I don't think so. It hit home and I liked that it wasn't another happily ever after. It was raw, it was REAL.

Fascinating. I normally agree or at least like your takes, but I pretty strongly disagree here. For example, I understand your take on how they handled Gamora in this movie but I really disagree with it. I understand that if all you’re watching is guardians 12 and three, Gomorrah‘s arc is very confusing, but I think it’s important to recognize, that is not how these movies are supposed to be watched. When you watch the movies as they are supposed to be, guardians, one, and two, avengers, three and four, and then guardians three I think it really elevates the movie, and I think the way they handle Gamora without just shoving her and quill back together is really phenomenal, and something that no other MCU movie would’ve had the balls to do. And I also get the criticisms about Adam warlock, and I think those are a lot more fair, he does not have very much to do in this movie, but I found him really entertaining for what he was, and I feel like writing any more of a story for him into the movie would’ve taken away from the much more important story that was resolving the guardians character arcs. All in all I think guardians of the Galaxy, volume three is one of if not the best MCU movie to exist so far.

I don't see how, at any point in time, characters like Dr strange, captain marvel, captain America, thor etc would take orders or listen to decisions made by oeter quill. not to mention, the only reason Peter's plan would have worked in titan was because its the space. to lead avengers on EARTH, it should be people who know earth.

I figured at some point in the MCU there would be a big separation in appealing to the masses and appealing to comic readers. In comics, it is almost impossible to read every story that might affect characters so the writers add a text bubble with an asterisk referring to the comic where a particular detail happened. You might go read the reference but at least you have a sense of why something is the way it is. You can’t really do this in a movie.
I’ve read comics since I was 7. I can forgive bad stories because I know there is always a good one coming.

You put into words what I could not about what problems I have with the movie. Everyone keeps saying that this movie is the best, that they love it, and I'm over here like, "I think I missed something." I would put it between Volume 2 and Volume 1 though. For me, the music is kind of the best part of that first movie, however it does build the foundation for everything in Volume 2 to hit so well, and I absolutely love that movie, which oddly enough seems to be a number of people's least favorite of the Guardians movies, and I don't know what plane of existence I am living on where I have the opposite reactions to the populous while still not feeling like I'm being contrarian. Volume 3 combines the best elements of 2 with the okay elements of 1, so it kind falls in the middle. The movie felt a bit overstuffed with characters and the music didn't hit as much unfortunately. I'm not even really remembering the High Evolutionary all that much, which is a shame because I guess he's one of the best villains we've ever got, and I'm just not on the same page, and I think that's because while he is constantly in the movie, he is not constantly creating obstacles for the Guardians to overcome in the present day, so all I have to go off is how awful of a man he is in the past, which works, but I need something more I guess. The emotional beats were great however, I loved Rocket's story and everyone's sendoffs, the action's awesome, so it's not like the movie was bad, far from it, but it's not as perfect as everyone keeps making it out to be.
And here we are again, the MCU doesn't have a single trilogy to its name where you can just watch one story from beginning to end and have a full picture. It's great to have this interconnected universe, but to really enjoy what Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 has to offer, you have to do 23 movies (Iron Man to Endgame, and their part in Love and Thunder) and a Holiday Special's worth of homework if you've never seen anything in the MCU. Meanwhile, Shang-Chi missed everything, and you only need 7 movies to watch if you really want to know what this whole thing with Trevor is all about, which requires Iron Man 3, but since it references Avengers a bunch, 6 more movies added there, but you could kind of just watch Shang-Chi, too. I doubt it will be so easy in the sequel or threequel depending on whatever crossover takes place when. You can't just watch the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, you really need their other appearances, no matter how much Volume 3 is designed to just be a sequel to those movies. Rocket and Nebula's relationship has an additional 5 years nobody else has, something you need from Endgame to really hit here. The Guardians somehow bought Knowhere from the Collector, and that's just passively dropped in the Holiday Special, no mention of how they got the units to be here, not even there, and there's also the Mantis/Peter sibling thing, too. The MCU is great, it has a lot of setups and payoffs, and the interconnectedness can be phenomenal, but sometimes the only thing you can do is just watch it all at least once so you know what's going on, and then you can cherry pick your rewatches for new installments. I'm glad Volume 3 is free of all the multiversal baggage, one Gamora not withstanding, but it's still got plenty of other MCU baggage, too. That's not a problem to me, but it's not as standalone as some people may claim, and I would be remiss if I did not share that I do long for the days of Raimi's Spider-Man and Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy and such just so you can have a complete story in just a few movies.
