23:15 okay but that still doesn't justify the murder and torture everyone had to go through because of Wanda's problems. Families force force to sit unmoving until they were needed for something and forced to endure Wanda's nightmares whenever they were allowed to sleep all because she wanted to play house. She offered no apologies and no visible signs of regret for her actions.

@@ejleoz21 yeah I could agree, it felt more like a buddy cop movie similar to the relationship from "men in black 1" but I think that was the magic that worked for me. Hawkeye was actually one of my favorite MCU shows. It got better after the first episode, and I thought the tone was actually fitting. The characters felt well developed, the action was actually creative and fun, and the build up to the finale was great. Kingpin isn't really in it, so don't go into the show expecting him to be a big part

      I enjoyed it too. Hailee
Steinfeld's Kate Bishop is genuinely really entertaining and one of my favourite additions to the MCU in phase 4. I'm really excited to see her interact with other characters. I just wish they introduced kingpin way earlier in the show to actually give him a presence. I mean Maya Lopez's whole character centres around Kingpin so it's kinda weird they didn't build up that relationship sooner

Personally I love Moon Knight, however I think that has more to do with the actually really well written and in-good-faith representation of DID as I have several close friends who have it, and having them be seen in a way that is genuinely respectful was really amazing

18:41 - someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the whole idea is that Riri built the machine as a project for school, and wasn't even aware that the government had it... her professor takes the machine after she completes it and was the person who handed it to the government. When Namor destroyed it, the CIA sets out to find the person who actually made it, which is why they're looking for Riri, and why Namor wants to kill her, as I guess he knows that no other machine currently exists.

I guess they could retroactively claim that the scene at the end of Wanda hinted at what was to come, that outwardly she seemed timid and sorrowful, but a part of her was already reading the Darkhold and plotting. I think they could have made that a touch stronger - maybe even implied that the reason Monica was so easy on her at the end was that Wanda was still manipulating things. If they had spent more time with Wanda pretending to be remorseful in Doctor Strange, then I could understand the justification for not playing her a bit darker at the end of WandaVision, but they pretty much immediately outed her as the big bad (and the trailers didn't really try to hide this either).

Interesting perspective, blaming Wandavision for not properly setting up Multiverse of Madness instead of the common viewpoint that MOM didn't properly follow up on Wandavision. You're kind of right, though - if we'd seen more time pass with Wanda and her children bonding, perhaps Wanda's desperation to get back to them would have come across better. But I still find it strange that the creators of each work didn't seem to have consulted each other, considering one would be leading into the other - Raimi only watched a few key scenes of WV, that directly impacted the storyline. This would've paralleled perfectly with John Walker taking it out of his own self interest and wanting power vs Sam taking it because he is the next Captain America and in essence, the next Steve Rogers. I think you missed the point of the show.

@@Cauldron6 And so is (can't remember his name, Hodge maybe?) the guy in the first Captain America movie that the colonel wants to give the serum to. Erskin says that the serum enhances traits of the person it's used on. Steve was a good person,. so it would only make him better whereas Hodge wouldn't respect the power as he's had power his whole life meaning it would make him worse. This is the same concept as Sam/John. John thinks he NEEDS the serum to be successful, and he becomes power hungry. Sam doesn't think he needs it, he actually doesn't want it. He saw what it did to another black man who took it, and how he was essentially buried in history. Zemo's speech about how the serum corrupts everyone who takes it except for Steve ties into Sam's story. He says Steve was an exception, but that there's only been one Steve Rodgers. Seeing as Sam is the next Captain America, him being the next Steve Rodgers also makes sense and morally they are both the same and pure of heart. He IS the embodiment of what Cap/Steve is.

Your assessment of Wakanda Forever is quite opposite to mine. Shuri was very clearly always the protagonist in the story. The whole opening is through her lens and we see her struggling with rage the rest of the movie. She is also the one Namor shows his world to. I don't understand what you mean about her not being the main character. Also, cutting time in these movies is a bad idea. The extra half hour means we can let scenes breathe and the pace is correct for how big the story is. One of Thor Love and Thunder's worst mistakes is the breakneck speed of the pace.

  • @MrBobthened

I thought that Eternals was actually surprisingly good. I liked how it was shot largely on location rather than entirely on green screen like most MCU movies. I also thought that the moral conflict was interesting, like Civil War except with well written motivations that actually make sense for all the characters. I also liked their costumes, most MCU costumes are over designed and too complicated-looking, The Eternals all had quite simple block colour costumes that made them quite easy to tell apart in action sequences.
Having said all that, I think that a lot of the characters dint have enough time to be established, it maybe would have worked better in a TV show format. Like what was the deal with the madness that Thena kept getting? And why did King’s just leave the story? (Yes I agree that finger blasters is a super lame power, and we’re supposed to believe that Thor followed him around as a kid?! You know the Thor who can fly and has lightning powers and super strength and an indestructible hammer!!). Also the monster character was kinda pointless plot wise, he just got killed off in the background while the real fight was happening! Seemed like he was just there for the action scenes.
With a longer run time most of these issues would be fixed.

All I can hear listening to this review is "I was expecting something else from all of this so I couldn't appreciate any of it for what it was and have mistaken minor issues for catastrophic detractions". Obviously if the entries weren't your thing, that's fine, but you can't really criticise Hawkeye if you didn't watch it, the CGI in She-Hulk wasn't mind blowing but it was fine, and Ikaris, Ajak, Sprite, Cercei, Kingo, Thena, Druig, Gilgamesh, Phaistos, and Makari (maybe you weren't paying enough attention).
Phase four is getting loads of backlash like this. Where once people whined it was too interconnected, now it isn't interconnected enough. Where once it was too formulaic, now it's lazy and uncreative because a meta-textual sitcom ended with the lead character talking to the writer's room. It just feels like the MCU got so big it became easy and popular to attack, which is frankly just disappointing.
That's not to say there are no legitimate criticisms, but so much of this is just fanfic desire projection and recycled nitpicking (did the joke in Thor with the speaker not land? Well that's it's razzie in the bag) and it's just wearisome at this stage.

Black Widow felt like the MCU’s definition of wrong place, wrong time, if we had to have a Black Widow movie in Phase 4 then I think it should’ve been the third one with the first coming out before Iron Man 2 so when she shows up there everyone could’ve gone “Oh hey it’s Natasha” which also focuses on Natasha’s origin, sets up Yelena, Red Guardian, and Melina at the beginning scene, and also introduces Hawkeye with the two going on a better version of the Budapest mission, the second comes out and takes place in between Infinity War and Endgame being a better version of the Phase 4 movie with a more proper Taskmaster (I could care less about the gender as long as the character is written well and Taskmaster wasn’t, it was such a waste to turn one of the most interesting villains in the comics into a mindless drone) as the main villain which brings back Yelena and the family but mainly focuses on Natasha and Yelena and their sisterly bond, and with Natasha dead then the third in Phase 4 focuses on Yelena and her grief of Natasha’s death and maybe even including Hawkeye somewhere in there (I guess coming around or something with the trilogy with the first focusing on Natasha, the second on her and Yelena, and the third on Yelena)

Shang-Chi is so close to being excellent. The choreography of the early fight scenes is great, and I didn't even mind some of the cringe humour between Shaun and Katie - I mean they're best friends and that's how besties act, it felt less out of place than it did in Thor Love and Thunder. Trevor was great too, but the inclusion of the pokemon that magically solves one of their biggest problems, and then the grey CGI finale, really let the rest of the movie down. The final showdown with Shaun and his father started so strong. I would have been fine with the demon and the dragon having their own showdown as a background/parallel to the fight between Shaun and Xu Wenwu, but abandoning the much more interesting practical fight scene for the more MCU-traditional CGI-fest was a huge misstep in my opinion.

    The movies:
    1. No Way Home: I thought it was fantastic, even though a whole year has passed, I still enjoyed it a lot
    2. Wakanda Forever: A pretty good tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, and I actually got excited seeing Shuri as Black Panther
    3. Shang-Chi: A good movie with great action scenes, and a compelling conflict
    4. Multiverse of Madness: A flawed script, but at least Sam Raimi's directing was super entertaining, and Wanda is scary.
    5. Love and Thunder: Yeah it's got a lot of issues, but there are some good scenes that made me truly feel
    6. Black Widow: no seriously, why did we get this movie after Endgame? too late guys
    7. Eternals: WAY! TOO! MANY! CHARACTERS!
    The Disney+ stuff
    1. Guardians Holiday Special: a pretty fun short with some of that James Gunn heart that I love
    2. Falcon and Winter Soldier: I love that Sam doesn't get the serum. Sam is a good man, and this is why Steve gave him the shield
    3. Loki: A very intriguing show that got me invested in where the MCU was going
    4. WandaVision: This was also a fantastic show that got me interested, and Wanda's arc is great
    5. Moon Knight: A show that took itself much more seriously, that even touched some heavy topics that were truly heartbreaking
    6. Werewolf by Night: A fun short that I enjoyed
    7. Ms. Marvel: A fun show that I enjoyed, and not much else. Though the fact that it came under Kenobi was a detriment
    8. What If...?: A decent series that had a lot of promise, but wasn't unique enough. At least the Doctor Strange episode was good
    9. Hawkeye: I'm rewatching it now, and it's actually better than I remember.
    10. She-Hulk: Terrible. Just awful. At least Daredevil was fun.

I love the way both Marc and Steven are written, all of the egyptian mythology stuff is very cool and Harrow is a really interesting villain to me. Ep1 is an amazing introduction to both Steven as a character as well as the world he inhabits, I loved not fully understanding what was going on. Ep5 is endlessly re-watchable and just a god-sent, it's so high concept but what's even better is how character focused it was. I love your takes on stuff even if there's a bunch in here I have slightly different takes on.
For me I liked that Hawkeye was a more grounded story, and the relationship between Kate and Clint was fun. It had fun holiday movie vibes, even if it was maybe a little flabby in the middle and didn't use Echo as well as it could have. It was also great to finally see Clint use a bunch of his trick arrows and overall the show felt a lot more like a comic book story than most of the MCU. I also really enjoyed that She Hulk tried something different, even if it didn't all land perfectly. And yes, when Emil was introduced as a reformed character, I absolutely said I hope they keep him this way and don't do a "surprise twist" at the end where we find out he's secretly been the big bad all along, and they did exactly that and I loved every minute of Abomination being the voice of reason. There's still plenty of room for big bad Abomination in the MCU to come, and I am totally here for it, but here I thought it was a fun subversion.
The biggest disappointment for me in the shows was definitely Falcon. This show, out of all of them, had such a great premise. The fact that the Flag Smashers actually had some credible arguments was just completely wasted, and they had to pull the tired old "I might agree with your ideas but I can't condone your actions" trope out of the bag to justify new Cap returning everything to the status quo. I compare it to something like Andor, and it makes me doubly disappointed that we didn't get a show where the new Cap actually takes the side of the people, instead of almost passively agreeing to be the symbol of the establishment so long as they promise to try to be better.
I definitely agree with a lot of what you have to say here. I think both the MCU and the DCEU(?) should take a cue from what made The Batman, The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker enjoyable. Namely that none of them felt the need to be incredibly interwoven into into some huge arcing narrative. They all stand alone and they're all stronger for it. We're not going to see Disney stop making MCU content any time soon, but I'd love to see the MCU switch focus to some standalone projects that don't feel like 2/6 hour trailers for the next movie or show. What If...? even gave them a template for this, by having these standalone stories set in different timelines. They even then wove the characters from those timelines into a finale which used the characters without the need to intrude into each character's own episode.

I think what made films like The Batman and Joker work was that they were a breathe of fresh air for comic book movie fans. MCU movies have this very factory-like feel. Directors almost seem reluctant to bring their own artistic stamps to their work. Can you really tell me the difference between a Jon Watts MCU film or a Peyton Reed MCU film? Granted, we’ve had some artistic variation with directors like Sam Raimi, Ryan Coogler or James Gunn, but they’re few and far between. And while this is okay, it does make the cinephile in me scream out for something different. Where the MCU is making movies, The Batman and Joker are films, and yes, I am pretentious enough to say there’s a difference. They took risks. They didn’t spoon feed information or feel the need to insert jokes every couple of lines to keep audience attention.

Definietly not my favorite Phase of the MCU, but I appreciate that the Studio let the Creators more freedom. They were more controversal (except Spiderman No Way Home), because they wanted to be. In Thor Love and Thunder and Eternals I felt the directors made their own movie, not a movie that was forced to make. Even Taika said that he made a movie which will upset people and that happened. I like when a franchise taking some risks instead of pleasing the people.
The absolute positive result of this Phase was Elizabeth Olsen who CARRIED her all projects. I love that she got a chance to show the World she is a capble actress and she is MORE than capable.

I honestly feel like the 4th phase of the MCU is very close to phase 1 in terms of quality. Phase 1 consisted of movies that reached very high highs, but their quality was suppressed due to disappointing finales, and in the case of Avengers (1) just awkward moments that don't quite work. I have not regretted watching any single phase 4 content (except for Eternals), but haven't been blown away either. Especially with the overload of content.
Hopefully this means phase 5 and 6 will have some absolute bangers and not overdue it when it comes to quantity. Phase 2 had some really high highs, and some very low lows. And then phase 3 ended on the highest of high notes. Hopefully this new era of marvel films will follow suit and I'll be able to come back to these phase 4 works and appreciate them for both the building blocks they are at large, and the fun adventures they present when isolated.

I mostly agree with you. I would put Black Widow above Thor: Love and Thunder and upgrade it to mediocre instead of terrible. Among the Disney+ series I would put Loki above WandaVision by a nose, I would upgrade Hawkeye to the middle of the pack (episodes 1-4 were decent enough but that last two were very disappointing) and TFATWS would be a lot closer to the bottom for me. I tried hard but couldn't sit through the entire series (I also had trouble sitting through She-Hulk, you are dead right about just choosing a larger woman and letting her spend more time in Hulk form (which is what she did in the comics).

Putting Multiverse of No Maidens over Black Panther Wakanda Forever is insane, lmao. I get that the movie was long but I felt as if it was paced well and I don't necessarily understand why people didn't think Shuri wasn't the main protagonist, but I digress. The movie is a decent tribute to Chadwick and I feel it's structured in a much better way than a Dr. Strange movie where he's not even the main focus. They might as well should have just called it Multiverse of Madness
