He said that he wrote a song about a beautiful girl he saw dancing at a show he was playing. Lady became one of the most-played songs in radio history and Their biggest selling single and to this day, the woman has no idea the song was written about her because as the writer will explain… he never met her. He also tells how the band he helped start and created many of their biggest hits is now controlled by a group of individuals who aren’t even from the band's native country and tour and record without any original members in an exclusive interview coming up on Professor of Rock

It’s time for another edition of our series Revelations. where artists and bands take us for a deep dive into their greatest songs and albums. Details about the recordings that you won’t find ANYWHERE else and that’s a fact. The band has the most played radio song by an Australian band, actually the top 2 most played songs… Reminiscing and Lady and they’ve sold 30 million records and had numerous hits like Cool Change and Lonesome Loser, and sadly enough, the band that was inducted into the Australian recording hall of fame of Singer Glenn Shorock, songwriter and guitarist Graeham Goble, guitarist Beeb Birtles, bassist George McArdle, lead guitarist David Briggs, and drummer Derek Pellici are no longer in the band.
The band that controls the name Little River Band and tours under it has not one original member and most of the members are from America, not Australia. Our guest today, the co-writer of many of their biggest hit Graehem Goble says that the original members have wanted to regroup and tour for the fans but can’t under the Little River Band name. it seems extremely unfair. Graham tells how that came to be. he also tells the story of writing the band’s massive hit Lady that he wrote about a girl that still has no clue that the all-time hit was written about her. How strange… It was awarded the BMI award for 4 million plays and is now almost at 5 million plays. Get ready for some phenomenal yacht rock stories. Here’s the story of the classic lady.

There will only be one Little River Band, and that’s the original. It’s absolutely terrible that this was allowed to happen to this band who’s talent is exploited for money by imposters. I hope this brings awareness to people out there that they are just seeing a cover band with no integrity. Thanks Professor for letting everyone know they are being frauded, and supporting the real artists and talent. 🇦🇺

He doesn't mention how they came to lose the rights to the band name, so I bet it was sold. I had a '72 custom Telecaster in the '70s which I sold for $200 (same as I paid for it) that is worth over $4,000 now. I can't have that guitar back and someone else is playing it. That's how it goes when you sell things and is why the courts have ruled against them.

@@douglasfrantzen3011 Apparently a British guitarist who was invited to join the band did a swifty on them and trademarked the name behind their back. I think he exploited their trust for money, and a loophole means he gets royalties for using the band name. Basically, if they perform under that name he has complete control and gets all the money. He’s a nasty human and I hope people in the US are aware they are being fleeced.

To me it’s the beach because I grew up in the Caribbean not far from it. My grandparents had their house on the beach, a shack really, in a very small property a family member sold them. My parents then bought the property next to it and my mom still owns it. When purchased this place was nowhere and only known to the families who lived there. My childhood was spent there, no electricity and no potable water. Cisterns catching infrequent rainfall was how we had water. Summer, and any long weekend, paradise for us. Growing up, this song was one of several titled "Lady" that I heard (others came from Styx, Kenny Rogers, Joe Esposito sang one called "Lady Lady Lady"), but this is my favorite one. It has part to do with the song itself being the first one I heard and part with something Graham says about being "born in the winter and cooled by a warm heart". I was born in January in the New York Hudson Valley, and my mother (has) always loved me unconditionally. It's a different hemisphere, but the sentiment is the same.
I saw that revised version of Little River Band in July 2000 when they toured with Chicago. I definitely noticed that only one or two of them were Australian, and I wondered what had become of the original members. The part about how they have legally been barred from reclaiming the name is heartbreaking, especially after the original Asia lineup was able to take it back from John Payne before John Whetton passed away. I know Payne was pretty peeved over that.
In my mind's eye, I could fantasize about being a tour promoter and wanting to book Little River Band but only if at least three of the original members are in the touring lineup. I realize that sort of coup d'etat could not really happen, but it's fun to imagine.

ABSOLUTELY, the ORIGINAL & REAL Little River Band with Graeham Goble and the other talented musicians with him then, may well be my all-time favorite band. They certainly produced some of my all-time favorite songs! LOVELY, SWEET, MASTERFUL, TIMELESS songs!!!
Back in the year 2000, not aware of the band’s history, only knowing that I loved their pre-‘83 music, I took 5 of my 7 young kids (the last 4 are 2 sets of twins) to a “Little River Band” concert at the open air venue of Old Tucson Studios in southern Arizona USA. Afterwards, the kids and I were visiting with the bandmembers where my kids were sharing their bags of popcorn with the bandmates who were seated at a long table on the way out, signing their autographs on the sleeve of their new, ready to be released CD called “Where We Started From” for anyone who had purchased one there. I was soon to learn that aside from their use of the band name, their choice of that album name was deceptive. I HAD NO IDEA THEN. With the exception of the lead vocalist, I thought they WERE the original LRB! I knew their sound was a little off but attributed that to knowing the vocalist was a different guy. I didn’t know it was really a whole new band using the name. I only learned that it wasn’t my beloved LRB from the 70’s-‘82 when I posted my comment on another UA-cam channel that featured the classic LRB song “Reminiscing”, where I shared my experience of taking my kids to that concert at Old Tucson Studios in 2000 and watching my kids sharing their popcorn with the bandmates. It wasn’t but a day or two later when Graeham Goble responded to my comment in detail sharing his sadness and frustration at seeing folks like myself who were big fans of theirs back when the LRB was the real deal, but were obviously unaware that the new band WASN’T them and had actually FILED LAWSUITS against the original LRB members PROHIBITING them from even MENTIONING the LRB name when out performing. That was indeed a sad thing to learn. After Graeham had shared with me what had happened with the original members being legally bared from even referencing their history as the founders of the band on any future works or tours, the more I felt that the naming of that album I’d bought at that concert in 2000 (“WHERE WE STARTED FROM”) was a pretty arrogant move on the usurper’s part. I’ve since felt like I’d been purposely deceived by the band touring under the LRB name into thinking I was buying an album created by the original LRB... “THE LITTLE RIVER BAND”, “WHERE WE STARTED FROM”. I mean think about it. The audacious choice of that album name. The original LRB “STARTED” in Australia - while the guys who were using the LRB name in 2000 were/are Americans. The latter didn’t start in Australia, but that album name certainly tries to give that impression! And it worked. On me. And it has probably deceived many others as well.
I would LOVE to see the original members tour again. I don’t care what name they go by. I’d just love to hear Graeham Goble and his original bandmates perform together again, playing all their CLASSIC, MASTERFUL, SWEET, TIMELESS Little River Band songs. There’s no other band like the ORIGINAL Little River Band! ABSOLUTELY some of the best music ever composed and gifted to the world!

Little River Band deserves so much more credit than they've received. Aside from the tunes played on the radio, the album cuts are are also fabulous. Their vocal layering is incredible. Hey James, if you've paid to see the originals but felt scammed when presented with a low-quality cover act, I feel your pain.
The best thing you can do in the US for the true LRB is to spread the word about how disappointed you were to as many music lovers as you can.
Together you could have a collective voice that hopefully boycotts the imposters & screw them over.
My simple solution, which would warm many a heart, would be for the originals to come back as the "River Band" so that they & music fans can relive the good times.

My parents couldn't afford to send me to U of A beyond my first semester. My Dad was a trucker and the national company folded and stole the money that was supposed to go into his pension. 79, inflation was high, and gas went from 23¢ a gal to 78¢. One can always hope that someday they’ll either be able to win back control of their own name or that the current group will do the right thing or some kind of agreement can be reached. But maybe in the meantime, the original band can regroup under a different name and at least play together again.
