      It was fun. On the one hand I'm glad I went because it was certainly something special to be a part of. And it worked out well given the technical difficulties with the online stream lol. But TBH it may have actually hindered my initial analysis because I didn't have the benefit of the insight provided by the commentators and I wasn't close enough to see any detail on these guys in the flesh and had to rely on the jumbotrons anyway. I might go again for 2019 because it's poised to be an epic show but I'm not so sure it's in the best interest of this channel.

      @@Tomn8er how so? I mean how is it not in the best interest of the channel? I mean your subscribers are in a way living vicariously through your experience and appreciate the credibility you gain by your attendance. I live in Australia and can only dream of attending the event myself. It was the experience of a lifetime when I attended in 2009 & saw history being made. You stand the chance to see it being made for the second time if Phil were to come back next year and regain the title. Or even saw someone else take it from Shawn. It's an exciting time in bodybuilding. I have loved watching the Olympia every year since I was 10 years old (35 times) either on video, DVD, or more recently by FREE webcast. I used to have to wait 6-months after the event to pay $70 to by a vhs of the competition just to see who had won. You have a truly golden opportunity, and your subscribers would love it.

    Unsportsmanlike? Really? When I first saw Rhoden stare down heath, it almost looked like he was worried Heath was going to collapse from being so out of breath. Also in 2017 heath stared down ramy in the back double bicep when he got moved to the outside. All that is just showmanship and playing the game. True unsportsman like conduct in my opinion is taking off the 2nd place medal walking halfway across the stage and refusing to do any interviews. Lol

    I think a lot of people, even the judges would agree with me that Phil wasn't awful or anything, It's just that his game, the fullness and roundness with finer details, looked unimpressive next to a guy with better lines, a lot better conditioning, aesthetics, better presentation, and another guy who is 2 inches shorter yet 50 pounds heavier than him, with a small midsection and wide shoulders, and has pretty good flow and great conditioning despite being a massmonster. The fact is in every single aspect either Roelly or Shawn was blowing away Phil, while bringing their own strength to the stage in addition. Even on the HD pictures, in poses like the back double biceps, my eyes were drawn to Shawn's extremely well conditioned lower body and torso, then Roelly's shoulders and arms. About the finer details btw, Phil wasn't far ahead, not at all. In certain poses he looked smooth compared to Shawn. I know you like Phil, because he kinda resembles Shawn Ray, and brings similar qualities, but this year, Roelly and Shawn made Phil look unimpressive.
    P.S. Shawn Ray is better than Phil.

    • @NotoriousDevourer
      @NotoriousDevourer 5 років тому +1

      he had less detail this year. he was off. a little flat a little less conditioned. if were to put a number on it id say he was about 85%. still gave a 110% shawn a good fight. If phil shows up 95% next year he will destroy shawn like he did in 2016. There, it was the other way round, shawn looked extremly unimpressive standing next to full to the brim phil. Thats the problem with shaun he needs to be diced and sliced if he wants to have any chance of standing next to a close to 100% phil, otherwise he will not just lose to phil, but other guys will overtake him as well. Phil can afford to be off and still hang, shawn off is whole another story he will struggle to be in top 5 like in 2017.

    • @hoghogwild
      @hoghogwild 5 років тому +2

      +Levan I disagree, Rhodens conditioning was superior to Phils. Phils inability to control his abdomen during heavy breathing was worth a couple points, but his conditioning was off. He left the door open and someone was there to step in. Phils abdomen looked better than 2017 so far as his umbilical hernia not protruding, but when hitting abs and thighs, his abdomen looked very flat. Even if Phil could have controlled his breathing, thus controlling his abs, he was down on conditioning to Rhoden. Phils front double bicep looked odd as well. Its going to be interesting in 2019.

      yeah back is a huge body part, that's almost half of your body.I guess anyone can be mr olmpia now as long as they have details. Morel could win it without legs. Johnny jackson should've won a couple. Judging system is all messed up now. Also, people gung ho about rhoden's aesthetics. What about the x man tony freeman, he was aesthetic af in his prime. And he was HUGE. 280lbs. But they always chose the freaks over him. Even bracnh warren the worst aesthetics of them all consistently beat him. All of sudden shaun's like the messiah of bodybuilding. Give me a fucking break. At best he is a poorman's x man. Kinda harsh but its true.

      I think Phil was still the only guy who should have won. Don't get me wrong, I don;t like him as a champion, but he had only one weakness: the gut. Yes he was off compared to previous years but his conditioning was still enough for today's standards. Other than this Phil actually doesn't have any weaknesses, and Shawn's body is a whole weakness. He is not aesthetic at all and I don't get why they call him aesthetic. If you wanna see aesthetics go see guys like Flex Wheeler, Lee Labrada etc.

    Based on the front shots Rhoden just had a more polished look. Side and back shots still go to Phil. Phil has more muscle and is more round but he didn't look crisp. His conditioning was off, but it wasn't THAT off. His gut though, has grown and along with that hernia, I see why the judges made their decision. If Phil can correct the stomach issue and come in again conditioned ( I think he just missed his peak) I think he can easily retake the title. Shawn was awesome but Phil is a beast I think a lot of people have gotten used to how good he really is. Given the circumstance I think Shawn was the rightful winner. Hopefully he can retain it.

    Ramy's structure is so good. That's a shame he couldn't do better.
    Even though they judge the mandatory poses, the video footage is actually really helpful in order to judge the guys: best example is the christmas tree of Shawn that you don't really see when he hits the pose. Shawn's smart because he hides somehow his gut with his arm when not hitting the pose. Then he hits it with a flat belly.

    • @Tomn8er
      @Tomn8er  5 років тому

      His structure yes. But he's not taking a smart approach. He needs to stop training quads almost altogether and focus on bringing up his calves and even hamstrings a bit. He needs to practice his posing more. And for god sakes he needs to stop playing the size game already and focus on coming in peeled to the bone for once!

    • @TheHasta666
      @TheHasta666 5 років тому

      I agree regarding the quads. He would still have one of the most if not the most impressive quads. Now last year (if I'm not mistaken), he came a little smaller (at least at the prejudging) and it felt weird. As for Nathan, I really think he has the worst "physique" of all the guys from the 1st and 2nd callout. His lats are way too high and it looks really weird from the front. The fact that he's stretching so much his abs when hitting the pose doesn't help also. I was expecting something from Sergio this year, I guess that didn't happen (last if I'm correct). I would be interested to see the footage as well. Unless you're not in the front seat row, I don't think you could really make a fair statement of everyone's from so that's cool that you reviewed the show again with this particular footage. Of course the hype when you heard "and new Mr. Olympia..." must have been epic nonetheless :-)
      This year was so refreshing. Roelly looked great. He's bringing a mix of all the other guys, with mass, structure, aesthetic (as you can be) without being too blocky (as compared to William). William's midsection is way too blocky, not sure he can reproduce his second placing in the future. His back is really is assurance to the final callout.

    Roelly looking at Phil before the ab and thigh pose like, “dude, u ok? U gonna collapse?”

  • @hoghogwild
    @hoghogwild 5 років тому

    Phil was certainly winded a normal respiratory rate is 12-20 breaths per minute at rest. Heath was breathing at 44 breaths/minute, Rhoden at about 28 bpm, Roelly at approx 48bpm and Bonac approx. 40 breaths per minute. When your brain detects an increase in Carbon Dioxide in your blood, caused by physical straining such as flexing almost every muscle in your body as hard as you can, while attempting to hold your abdomen as tight as possible, which limits the ability to breathe, increased cardio vascular output is required. The sensation to breath more deeply and rapidly is best described as air hunger. For the lungs this entails increased amounts of air to be breathed in and out by the lung, in other words, increased ventilation volume is required. The lungs can accomplish this in a few different ways. a)One is to increase your respiration rate, or have an increase of complete inspiration and expiration (breath in and breath out) cycles per minute, or b) you can keep the rate of respirations constant while increasing the volume of each inspiration and expiration cycle, in other words your breath deeper. c)The most efficient manner in which to increase Oxygen(O2) intake and increase Carbon Dioxide(CO2) output is to increase both the rate AND the depth of respirations simultaneously. All this extra gas exchange is a waste if its delivery rate remains constant, this is where the heart must increase its volume of delivered blood. It does this by increasing both its heart rate, the number of contraction and relaxation cycles per minute and its stroke volume(amount of blood pumped for each full contraction and relaxation of both the Atria and Ventricles of the heart).
    Rhoden appeared to be the most relaxed breathing-wise on stage, both from his lower breathing rate and shallow depth of breathing. Roelly and Bonac were showing more signs of air hunger, and they were consciously controlling their breathing by breathing faster, but not breathing deeply. This allowed both of them to take on more O2 and blow off more CO2 while at the same time keeping tension in their lower abs. You could really see Roelly concentrating on taking shallow quick breaths in between poses.For some reason Phil is experiencing some very pronounced air hunger. His rising levels of CO2 in his blood are forcing him to breath not only faster, but very deeply. In doing so, he is forced to lose tension in his lower abs in order to breath. He is fighting it very hard, but the drive to breath when depleted is overwhelming. While Phils umbilical hernia surgery was successful in that it no longer protrudes like it did in 2017, his abs muscles, his 6-pack was more flat this year with abdominal distention both outwards towards the front, and increased waist width to the sides is more evident and is only compounded with his more narrow shoulder width. There were certain poses where his abdominals were barely visible and appeared "washed out" or "soft". When compared side by side with Shawns wider shoulders, narrower waist, creating a more pronounced V-taper coupled with sharply shaped abdominals and more controlled abdominal distention and better overall conditioning, with an excellent Christmas tree(visible at times) great glute, hamstring and calve conditioning was just enough for Shawn to take the win. IMO all the hoopla about Phils abdominal distention is undeserved. His protruding navel(bellybutton) caused by an umbilical hernia is improved, but that improvement was lost due to his overall deficit in crispness and conditioning. When all 4 finalists were group posing, every single athlete at one time or another while onstage could be viewed with his abdomen distended out further than his chest. Phil's abdomen didn't lose him the Sandow, his lack of overall conditioning compounded by Rhodens best presentation did. Phil's worst got him a 2nd place to Rhodens best. That's how close the competition is, for Olympia competition, it's the best man on that day. This was clearly evidenced during the 2018 edition of the worlds best bodybuilding competition, the Mr Olympia. I can't wait for 2019.

    Good breakdown. Phil's best points by far are his arms, aside from the arms and possibly side-chest, he doesn't bring much to the table of visual appeal. Nonetheless he looks great when conditioned and in shape. However, Rhoden was clearly superior overall bar the arm development in contrast to Phil. Shawn's victory here is well deserved, and further reiterates why Phil would have had issues standing next to Flex Wheeler and others from the golden age.

    I have a question. Why do Mr. Olympias come heavier each year? I mean whu couldn't Phil Heath stay in his 2011 look? (same with ronnie, dorian etc). Is it something that come naturally from chronic steroid use, the added size, or is ti something they do on purpose? A frame can hold just as much muscle before it loses definition from overly muscle physiques.

    • @Tomn8er

      I think it's just human nature to strive to progress. To be fair, Phil's brought up his back and legs considerably since 2011 (even though his overall shape has been compromised in the process).

    In all seriousness though, Phil will sit this year out and he'll be back next year. If he comes in tight and conditioned, he'll kill everyone. He needs to downsize a little and start looking more like his 2011/2012 package.

    Times change and I guess that Shawn Roden's physique is now the one that the judges are going for. Plus, he's come in super shredded and has zero gut.
    Phil Heath's problem, apart from the gut and the inferior conditioning, is that he's neither big like Roelly Winklaar nor aesthetic like Roden. He's neither one thing nor the other.
    To win a Mr O you have to tell the judges "Hey, this what you looking for?" Roden did. He just oozed confidence.....
    BTW don't understand why Bonac doesn't tone down and go into the 212 for an almost certain 1st place....

    • @Tomn8er
      @Tomn8er  5 років тому +2

      Bonac stands to make way more money placing 4th in Open than 1st in 212. He was 3rd last year and won the 2018 Arnold lol so while his short stature may be more well-suited to 212 on paper, he's doing pretty damn well for himself!

    Here's the problem with too many people when assessing and judging bodybuilding. They see everything from a fragmented perspective with emphasis placed on individual body parts. Comparisons are made on an individual body part to individual body part basis. Most people have lost the ability to assess and judge a physique from a holistic perspective. They simply don't have the ability to see and explain the parts of the body in reference to the whole. Some typical comments to exemplify this include "on a per body part to body part comparison", "besides the gut, every other body part is better", "the Olympia is won from the back" and there's many more. Based on this every bodybuilder has strengths and weaknesses and what should ultimately separate the best from the rest is the OVERALL PACKAGE. Just because Phil's back shots were better, it shouldn't be rewarded with the Sandow. Conversely, just because Rhoden's front shot were better it shouldn't be rewarded with the Sandow. OVERALL, Rhoden well and truly deserved the title. Phil Heath should've placed way less than 2nd. That gut ruined the WHOLE package.

    If we zoom in on Phil vs. Shawn, it's basicly a question of preference. To me there's no clear cut winner - they both have strong points and weak points in their physique. It really comes down to what the judges put more emphasize on. Phils overall muscularity is still ahead of Shawns in several bodyparts, but Shawn has the more pleasing silhouette with a better v-taper and a more controlled and shredded midsection. It seem like the agenda of the judging criteria has changed this year, and I personally welcome it.

    "Phil heath doesn't have the best structure or best frame, he has to make up for it with detail", I disagree I reckon without the stomach issues he actually takes Rhoden. He's quite narrow but a lot of compact muscle. Details like no other, how many times have we seen a narrow guy win from the back, he's the GIFT. Not a Phil Heath fan and was in absolute agreement with this year's results.

    • @MrXennon1
      @MrXennon1 2 роки тому

      What exactly is it you disagree with? You just said yourself he’s quite narrow (aka his structure / frame). So you agree. He also states he overcomes that flaw with detail, you then point out his incredible detail, so you agree. Must I keep going lol

    • @Sonnylabrooy
      @Sonnylabrooy 2 роки тому

      @@MrXennon1 three years late. What do I disagree with? I mean that's a pretty steep ask, I don't really give a shit tbf, The Olympia has shifted since.
      Bodybuilding being an opinionated "Sport".
      Just because he has narrow shoulders this is not completely definitive of his structure. It's definitive of his frame.
      When you take the definition of structure put simply "the arrangement between parts" - Phil Heath has probably one of the best that three dimensional look His symmetry is certainly up there. But his frame isn't the best. I was encompassing the quote so "frame" was part of the quote.
