Great tip I have a oddball foreign military cup this would work great on. Hope you had a great birthday the other day.
Excellent, I'm glad that you liked it!
For stubborn folks (like me) that demand stainless steel, substitute a stainless steel tray to obtain your metal stock. This is a very handy idea as I am guessing there are canteen cups from many sources that are not supplied with a lid. Old cups that did have a lid but it was lost or damaged beyond use would certainly befit from this project. Thank you James for another helpful and easy DIY.
Yes, I would prefer stainless steel myself but aluminum is easier to work with for the average person.
Or for the same price you could just buy a real one online.
It is a very cool idea. Thank you, James. God bless.
Glad you liked it!
Your videos are as great to watch an learn.
Glad you like them!
What a great DIY project, very inspirational.
Thanks so much!
Another excellent mod James, thanks for sharing! Cheers 🇨🇦
Glad you enjoyed it!
Useful idea!👍 I’m sure lots of folks have these canteen cups, and most have settled for plastic canteens. A lid makes that cup a much better cooker.
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Hide and watch ! I’ll have one on my cup before sundown ! 👍💯
Sounds good!
Hello from Detroit Michigan brother thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise and for taking us on your adventure through time and GOD-BLESS and happy Easter

.and above all else these r skills everyone needs ,especially in times we r in now
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for all the kind words!
I never understood why the cup didn't come with a lid, so this is great, thanks!
Happy to help!
Nice hack for the USGI cup. Big thumbs up here.
Thanks so much!
I wish I had that when I was in the ARMY
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it!
a very nice video. it fits the cup. I have a few I purchased, but they won't fit inside the cup. they just sort of sit on top and falls off easily. I like this.
Yes, I have never been very happy with the way they fit either.
Great addition to your cup. A small sugestion would be to make your tabs a bit longer to fit under your lid handle so you use 2 less pop rivets. Just a thought.
Good idea!
My thoughts as well
Nicely done,great weekend project
Thanks!
Good afternoon from Syracuse NY brother thank you for sharing your thoughts and information videos
Thank you so much for watching!
I enjoy your videos
Got to save this video and try this at a later date.
Excellent. Thanks for watching!
Love your video clips! You know growing up in the bayou of Louisiana we often went weeks without electricity. On hot days we'd coat the inside of the mailbox with foil. Outside mailbox always painted black. It would cook a loaf of bread in an hour. I mean it got hot! You'd see a dead frog out on the road at 7am and by 11am it's bubbling and sizzling in the sun, and the odor wafts up and punches you like a bad fart on a long elevator ride.
Dead frogs that stink that bad should be featured on a Bud Light can!!!
Wow, that's pretty amazing!
@@WayPointSurvival I can't agree more! Awesome tip! Thanks for sharing Ms Rachel! :)
Love it. Absolute legend of a guy you are.. would love to come across the pond and attend your survival classes..
Thanks so much! We'd love to have you come for some classes!
Ingenious design! This solution solves the age old problem of finding a properly fitting lid for the venerable U.S. GI canteen, which is one of the most useful items of gear ever invented. James, you were born in the wrong time; you would have been a major player in the late 18th century Industrial Revolution with your innovative ideas. Great video, as usual.
Thanks so much! I'm glad that you liked the video!
Hi from the uk 🇬🇧
Another great video
Thanks and hello!
Good job James
Thanks!
What's So Good about You is You are always So Innovative , Thanks for the Helpful Tips
Thanks for watching and for the kind words!
Well done.
Thanks!
I push the center stud out of the pop rivet, then I push the rivet through the hole and place a small washer on the center. I use a punch to flare it and hammer the rivet flat. Standard rivets are hard to find in my area but pop rivets are everywhere.
Good idea!
James, although a great idea, I take issue with the idea that it would be low cost for everyone. I was initially so excited about the possibility of a budget lid. But for those who don’t have access to a pop revit, metal snips, files, sander or dremel, drill press and bits and possibly an anvil, then it would be way cheaper to buy an already made pot and lid. Perhaps you could list the materials and tools needed in the opening of the video? Much appreciated for your time and effort!
Thanks. The reason that I didn't list all of the tools at the beginning is because people wouldn't watch the video all the way through. Even though you may not have the tools right now, watching it being done is a great visual aid for later on should the need arise and the materials be available.
@@WayPointSurvival Good point! Thank you for your reply!
❤ That was great! Thank you for always making these McGwyver type videos to save the common man a few bucks!
Glad you like them!
So you don't like lumpy drinks 😂🤣😂🥰
I don't blame you, I don't either.
Wow, that's neat. Have to keep this in mind. Thank you so much for the video!
Thanks for watching!
If you cut that second strip of Aluminium about an inch and a half longer you can overlap handle and the hooks, save 2 rivets and 2 holes and have lighter tidier lid! ;-)
Good idea!
@@WayPointSurvival Once an Engineer always an Engineer! ;-)
I thought why not use one strip of aluminum with a d-ring (or key ring which could be rigged to stand up) in middle
Good stuff, James.
Thanks!
I recycle an aluminum foil pie plate bent to outside shape of cup lip & add a folded over piece of metallic tape to the outside center, for much the same purpose & it's light weight as well.
Good idea!
And, when you are putting the cup in your bug out bag, you can add some items to stick into the cup to carry some small things you may need. Just a thought.
True. Thanks for watching!
That’s real nice James. Thanks 😊
Glad you like it!
Guess I missed this one. A lid is a great item to have for your cook kit
Yes, excellent. I'm glad that you found it. Thanks so much for watching!
very practical and useful james , is a BIG DIY , a release for the brain , ( MIND THERAPY ) thanks a lot james , be fine , i see you later
Thanks so much!
Good video James , thanks for sharing , God bless brother !
Neat hack James. I usually use round pots and cups and see where this would also work on them if missing a lid. Thanks for the video, I look forward to them.
Excellent. It would indeed!
Yet again another awesome hac thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
So clever.
Thanks!
Superb idea... You are the man
Thank you so much 😀
Excellent content James!!! You seriously never cease to amaze me!! I have never seen a video from you that I didn't like. God bless you good sir and godspeed!!
Thank you so much, my friend! May God continue to bless you and yours as well!
@WayPointSurvival you're very welcome James and thank you!!🙂
Yup. Always awesome kit hacks and informative talks. Keep it up James
Thanks!
It's really interesting you keep it up guys
Thank you! Will do!
So instead of using the aluminum hooks, I'd suggest leaving two rectangular tabs at each hook point in the aluminum and just bending it to fit over the edges. And then just drill two holes in the center and thread a key ring or something similar thru for your handle. No extra cost for the other pieces, and no rivet gun/rivets needed
You could definitely do that!
Great idea.
Thanks!
Cool, another project for me.
I think I’ll try some different materials, like flatting out a tin can. I’m also thinking of roof flashing which I have laying around but it may be to flimsy.
Yes. Flashing is really thin.
Another good video. You have so many project that we need to have a book ! Be easier to keep up with your projects. Have a Great rest of your week
Thanks, you too!
well done sir
Thanks so much!
Thank you James all your videos are great very informative and great to follow I have done a few with my kids for there camping gear
Thank for the excellent content
Wonderful! Thanks for watching!
Brother James, this is a BRILLIANT DIY mod and like some, I will also use stainless steel for mine (ss plates @ dollar general for less than $3). Great video Sir and hope you and your family had a blessed Easter! God bless and keep these mods and gear hacks coming!!
Excellent idea. Thanks for watching and we had a great Resurrection Day. God bless you too!
Pretty cool
Thanks!
Another great hack 👍
Thanks!
I made a similar lid for my Artic canteen cup...works great
Excellent!
Another fantastic tip, ty for sharing
You are so welcome!
Thanks for another great idea!! I really learn a lot from this channel!
Thanks for watching!
How about just covering the cardboard with aluminum foil? Fewer tools and easy to replace if it gets lost.
Take care James
Sure, you could do that as well.
Интересный вариант использования крышки с отверстиями. У меня как раз есть Stanley Cook Set for Two
Thanks for watching and I'm glad that you liked it!
Good job brother.
Thanks so much, God bless you!
Very cool
Thanks!
Awesome.
Thanks, my friend!
As always Sir, I enjoy your videos. Especially these DIY ones. Can't help but wonder, what's next!? :)
Glad you like them!
Good one !
Thanks!
Great idea. But what if you wanted to put coals on the lid to cook bread or something. You could also use a cookie sheet or something from a dollar store. I was also admiring that bail mod on it, looks basically like the one on the Stanley Pot you did a while back. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Yes, it is similar to the one I did for the Stanley cook set.
I made a lid for mine only last Friday, I just used a flattened tin can cut to shape with some tin snips, mine was not as good looking as your version!
Thanks for watching, and I'm glad that you liked it!
Remember he's doing it for $. Besides he saw someone else's and modified his. Now you can improve yours or copy his. It's about the tinkering and learning. If it weren't we would buy after market
Another great idea, I was thinking, rather than making hooks to go on the center an attaching them with rivets. Couldn't you make the lid to the same circumference as the outside of the cup, and leave like a 1/4" in of the metal of the lid an bend it down to catch on the cup on opposing ends an still use your hanger, plus drill the holes in one end for drinking, it was just a thought, what do you think ?. An it would still nest in the bottom of a canteen carrier. Thx for the vid James
Yes, you could certainly make something like that!
Thank you
You're welcome
I agree that is a great idea, IF, you already have scrap material available, but if you are buying all the parts, then making it yourself, it probably would be cheaper to buy an actual lid.
The problem with the actual lives is they do not fit too well. They just sort of sit on top.
Great video. If I were to outfit a squad size group or bigger it would be cost effective. For one or two- Not so much. I bought a metal and rubber version. Burned my lips a few times in the Army-
Thanks for watching!
I've been using aluminum flashing that comes in rolls I buy at me local hardware store to make lids out of. However I've been making them just a little wider that the diameter of the cup then bending an edge around the lid. However, I think I like your idea much better, think I'll give it a try, thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching I'm glad that you liked it!
Spectacular job Brother thank you for sharing
Thank you kindly!
Hum that's pretty fancy .
Thanks!
Very cool. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
That good ideas....sir
Thanks!
You do a good lid.
Thanks!
I guess if a person wants to screw around and make it themselves for about the same price as buying a good one online this certainly works. You can buy the aluminum ones for for five bucks or you can buy the stainless steel ones, or even titanium which I believe was around 10 or 12 bucks. You can't do it with aluminum, but with the stainless steel or the titanium you can actually use it as a small frying pan if you had to. I've seen people cook their eggs on top. I'm not sure but I may have seen you do that. If you make one of those for fun I guess that's a pretty cool project. However when purchasing them remember they come in two sizes depending upon which cup you're trying to fit. Some of the cups are slightly different
The problem with purchasing one is that many of them do not fit very well and just sort of sit on top. I have several of them.
Thanks

Interesting addition, thanks for sharing it!
Only downside to a block handle is it is less compact. But if it works for you then good.
Do not use a stone as the aluminum will be bound in the grinding stone forever tip
Thanks for watching.
I can see there might be issues later so my suggestion is do one side. And have a place to hook it to pants with loops or have a bag to put it in. Because the front may havve some issues. So avoid problems do not do the front. Again the choice is yours.
Sure, you could try that.
Pretty cool 😎👍👍⚓⚓🇺🇲🇺🇲
Thanks!
👍
cool
Thanks!
Hopefully this isn't a spoiler but you should do a diy stove for the gi cup.
Thanks for watching and for the suggestion!
I don't know, why you made the hooks separately - leave some 'ears' when you cut the lid out and bend them to shape like your strips. It also might be helpful to turn the picture hanger/handle 90°, so you can lift it with a stick when the pot is hanging from the bail.
Just my two cents.
Sure you can do that. However, they would tend to get stressed and break off more easily than the tabs which can also be replaced when needed.
@@WayPointSurvival - I would make them one inch wide for rigidity and heat it in the fire from time to time to make the aluminium soft and pliable again - never broke on me. Most people forget aluminium gets hard and brittle by bending, but softens again and again when heated.
Genial
Thanks!
I would have liked to have seen a demonstration of its use while it had coffee or tea in it.
Why?
@@WayPointSurvival To see how well the lid stayed secured while you were actually drinking from it.
@@campsiteministries ok
❤️♥️
I make lids for cups and cans and what not we will just say containers. On my cups or something I am going to be drinking from I like my lids to cover the top rim where my lips go because i don't want my lips to go where flies or something like that have been walking around on and spitting on.
Good idea!
What I would like to learn is how to find water in a shrub forest. I have not one time come across water
As I do not live in that kind of environment, I'm not sure how to advise you on that problem.
You can make a design and have it burned on the laser. They'll cut you any hole or whatever you need, and the cost will be little more than just a sheet of aluminum. Of course, they will also cut out of stainless steel ;)
But the design itself is nice.
Yes, of course what I was going for was something that you could make it home. However, I really like the idea of having it made out of stainless steel.
Show how well it works...make a vid of you drinking from it.
I didn't do that because the idea itself is pretty self-explanatory.
Could it be done in stainless and how hard is it to work low grade stainless do you know?
Yes. It's more difficult to work than aluminum.
Won't aluminum melt with the heat?
If it gets too hot. However, on top of the pot it should be fine as it shouldn't get too warm up there.
