- In this video I show you how I made my crusader cup boil lid out of aluminium. If you want to go straight to the nitty gritty and avoid my rambling intro, the making bit starts at 5mins 43secs. I hope you enjoy and find it useful! Thanks for watching.
Out of all the people I have looked at on UA-cam making these lids, I vote yours no 1
Being a tinkerer myself I thoroughly enjoyed this video! It's awesome to see how you can manufacture your own equipment to use in the field. More of this kind of stuff :D thank you.
Thanks Daniel - glad you enjoyed it! I do love to make and modify my gear when I can - there’ll be plenty more making videos, got a few ideas in the pipeline! Atb, Simon.
Just made one, first project of 2023, excellent tutorial I'm a very happy bunny, thank for your continued new content 😊
Brilliant job Simon. Takes me back to when I was a kid living in the country that's how we did stuff, little sweat, little brain power, and a lot of fun when the job was done. I think I'll use that same plan to make one for my regular old stainless steel cup.
Very nice and useful DIY video, thanks Simon.

"It's better than watching The Voice." MUCH better! Great video, lid and dog! Thanks.
Thanks Tommy!
My husband and I do enjoy your videos
Thank you Sara! Glad you enjoy them! 😁 Atb, Simon
Just ordered myself my first cook kit without a lid so I’ll be trying your method, great video by the way
That's funny I was just trying to buy a lid for my US GI canteen cup , now to get some ali sheet , thanks Simon.
Constructive criticism , the music was a fair bit louder than your speech , had to turn volume up and down all the way through.
All the best
Thanks Jason, nice to have your own home made gear. sorry about the volume - I forgot to adjust the levels before uploading.
sorry to be offtopic but does anyone know of a method to get back into an instagram account?
I was stupid forgot my login password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me
@Nikolas Jeffery Instablaster ;)
@Miller Cory thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Miller Cory It worked and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thank you so much you really help me out :D
Wow! I've looked at these canteens in our local military surplus store but have shied away from them because they don't come with a lid. After watching this video, it seems that making the lid isn't all that difficult. Thanks!!!
This video helped me tremendously.
Thank you for the tip.
Love the videos.
Please stay safe

I did this twice. Once out of alloy. Second one, out of a stainless front off an old bbq. Stainless I can slip in pouch with water bottle and it doesnt bend.
I did it basically the same. Cut out bashed it down.
Improvement. From underside drill 2 small holes. Width between up to you, and you dull rounded end chisel or a piece of 4mm barstock rod. Sharp tap. Turn it over you have a raised divet. Dremel or drill out one end a bit. Stainless welding rod, cut, fashion a small triangle, closing last bene in divet. You now have a handel; that when you slide it into dremellled bit of raised divet will stay upright so you dont burn yourself when you pull it off fire.
It’s nice to view your older videos and see where you are with your channel. It’s your humble demeanor that I and I’m sure other are drawn too. Your craftsmanship is inspirational with all you fabricate and construct for your hobby. You have become quite a videographer as well. I wish you continued success with your channel. You have a little something for everyone. Cheers and God bless 🙏🏼⛺️😎
Thanks mate! (And sorry about the bucksaw!)
Great video Simon. I can see how that homed-made lid would be a very enjoyable little project.
That's great work. Better than I could do.. I've been using G.I. canteen cups since I was eighteen, and that was several decades ago. They come with lids, so I'm fine there. I also have two Pathfinder canteen bottle cups, and they also came with lids.
The only cup I have with no lid is actually the cup I use the most. I don't even know what brand it is. It's blue enameled, has a fixed handle, and I keep it hanging from my haversack, or carabiner it to my canteen strap when I'm not carrying a haversack. I use it for a quick drink, or for coffee when I make a full pot.
There are times when a lid would be handy. After watching this video, I think I'll try making one. Great job.
Thanks James, glad you found it useful! I now use the pathfinder cup with a stainless Nalgene bottle, I really like it, but I think I’m going to add better handles that wrap around the cup further and are then longer when in use, if you know what I mean. Good luck with your lid! Thanks for watching, Atb, Simon.
I was in the Army for 30 years and never saw a G.I. canteen cup with a lid. The only lids available for these canteens are home made or after market items.
Just made one of these. A simple enough job, although I do have a couple of creases in the metal but this doesn’t detract from its use.
I’m headed to the shop to make one now. Thanks Simon for all your videos, I really enjoy them from across the drink!
Good to see you are a handy man with tool. I`m a workshop guy myself, and love to tinker around in my mancave in the basement.
-Odd
+NorwegianBushcraft - Haha! Everybody needs their man cave! Next to being outside doing outdoors things, I love to make and modify equipment. Then I have another excuse to go out and test it! Glad you enjoyed it my friend, Atb, Simon.
Been wanting one of these lids for about 2 years now and came across a discarded mess tin whilst scouting for a camp spot today so here I am giving myself a little refresher before I start 👍 happy days!
Nice Work! Thanks for the video. One of the best techniques I’ve seen.
Wow, learn a lot from watching you over the past few months even though I haven’t put any into practice, hoping lockdown will end soon, thank you for posting your vids, extremely enjoyable to watch 😀😀
I recently lost the lid off my trangia kettle and can't find a spare so this has given me the idea to try and make one Thanks
great job on the lid
david leasure - Thanks David. I’m pleased with how it came out! It’s always nice to make your own gear. Atb, Simon.
I took homeech not wood shop. I learned how to sew. Maybe I can make the bedroll. Good video Mr. Simon
Thanks, Ryan
Nothing like a walk in the woods with your best friend. I'm making a cup lid like yours today. Thanks for the video and the idea.
Just got done with my canteen cup lid. I had enough left around the edges so I hooked them over the rim of the cup a little to make it stay on in a breeze. Sure fits nice. I'm contemplating punching holes in the top or not. Again, thanks for the video.
Really glad it came out well Ralph! 👍
Thank you. I enjoyed both some nature and diy
Excellent video and very helpful as all your tips and ideas
I'm getting addicted to your videos and being a tinkerer and basically tight I'm going to start making my own gear after this and the one doing the small gear bags made from waxed cotton, I'll even see if I can get an old coat from a charity shop and if I get on OK I might get some better material on the interweb , keep them coming mate.
Just finished mine, really pleased with it . Many thanks
Brilliant work mate.
I recently bought a battered Austrian aluminium mess kit, which arrived which some huge dents and very slightly crushed. After spending an hour with a small anvil and a hammer, I managed to get it 90% back into shape, and 100% in working order. It made me realise that whilst aluminium is not perfect, its great for home projects because its surprisingly mailable. Thank you for the video and the excellent work mate. I might do this as my first canteen diy project!
Thanks for this. The best DIY lid I have seen. I hope to make a couple this week.
Cheers! Glad it was helpful! Good luck with the ‘run’. Atb, Simon.
An excellent video and I have now made a lid based on your presentation using some spare 1mm Aluminium sheet and a simple hand held Jigsaw to carefully do all the shape cutting .
To create a 4mm larger than template version on the Aluminium I drew a 4mm radius circle on some stiff card poked a hole in the centre then cut out the disc . Pushed the fine end of the Sharpie through the hole then firmly holding the wooden template on the Aluminium used the disc and sharpie to mark out the 4mm larger shape .
P 27 - Thank you! Glad you found it useful!! Excellent idea using that 4mm scribing jig. Glad it came out well. Atb, Simon.
Wow! I was looking to buy a metal lid until I saw this video. Now I’m inspired to have a go myself! Thanks for the motivation and inspiration!
As an ex 'tinner' (sheetmetalworker) if you had made anothr 'former the same size and clamped your ally inbetween with just your beaten edge rim all the way around, tightly clamped it makes the edge lip so much easier to form. I used to make edges like this using hard wood or 1/4" plate clamping my metal between tightly then slowly working my way around the edges tapping them over. If I was using stainless I'd use two formers made of 1/4"or 3'8" steel clamp down tightly then using gentle heat just enough (cherry red ) and it formed so much easier. Then when cooled clean up with scotchbrite or fine emery then polish and it always produced a good edge. (Quick tip, use a polished face hammer like a panel beaters hammer and it produces a lovely smooth flat edge.) 👍👍😉
Good idea and nicely done
Thank you so much. Waiting for my bcb kit to arrive then I shall follow your advice on making the lid. Excellent video.
Cheers Chris! Hope it comes out well! Atb, Simon
Excellent video 😀 I have one of the lids the guy on ebay makes, wish I had the skills to make my own but it was easier just paying the tenner. Brilliant bit of kit. The plastic lid,I've never used mine for cooking but once water is boiled I take off the metal lid and pop the plastic one on and drink my brew. I also have an American canteen set so I might give it a go and make a lid for that after seeing how straightforward it is
We appreciate this channel more and more with each video we watch. Keep up the great productions.
Thank you, really glad they are useful! Atb, Simon
Thanks for the ideas and the technique. This method can be used for about any size, or shape of container. I get a good bit of my gear at the thrift and reclamation shops; easy to find pots, but not lids; this idea opens up a whole new realm of re-purposed gear...cheers.
+Seamus3051 - Cheers Seamus! Like you, I too get a lot of gear second hand from flea markets and the like. It’s relatively easy to make the lids and a nice little project to do! Glad you found the video useful! Atb, Simon.
great video and what a great place for a cuppa tea!
+Sally Erickson - Thanks Sal! A cuppa made over a fire is always the best!!! X
Started watching a few vids here and there and I liked them so much I thought I'd go right back to the start and watch them all 😅
Love this little gem, things like the fact you made your own but still mention at the start where someone might be able to source their own just gives off the nicest, most genuine vibe and that is something I find to be a bit of a rarity on the ol' UA-cam. Get in lad it's so good to see how far the channel has grown. All the best from a new fan 😁
Thanks Simon i havve made a lid for m Australian canteen cup , i used an aluminiam pizza tray for the lid .
Cheers Rodney, nice one! Hope it came out well. Atb, Simon.
Good idea better than buying one , saved this one for sure. This will be made. Another good idea by Mr.Simon thanks.
Cheers Johnny! Better than those rubbish plastic ones! Atb, Simon
That was amazing to watch
Great vid Simon, really enjoying your uploads. Nice to have the combo of long and short vids, keep them coming!!
TheFalcos22 - Thank you!! It's a real support to get such positive feedback! As long as people keep enjoying them, I'll keep knocking them out! Cheers, Simon.
You are a crafty bugger Simon!! If you lost the throat plate on your bandsaw, just run a piece of wood half way through its a accident waiting to happen cutting over that open hole. Other than that, I love how easy you formed that lid over the wooden form, you are a true craftsman! Love your gear vids!
Yes, it’s a job I keep meaning to do - before it’s too late! 👍 thanks mate!
Great video. Thanks. I am retired U.S. Army and have the USGI canteen set. I made a similar cover for my cup. I have always wanted to get a Crusader cup as it looks to be larger than the US version.
The crusader cup is big -.it holds a full imperial pint. 👍
Nice one. Inspiring stuff.
I enjoy your videos.
Thanks Troy! 👍
Well presented videos and a common sense approach to outdoor gear and diy bushcrafting! Keep up the great work!
Thanks Doug! Nothing quite like making and using your own gear. Cheers, Simon
Simon, your channel is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Not just in the camping/outdoors genre but UA-cam in general. Well done!
Melted my BCB Crusader lid like you warned about, was going to buy one from Ebay now I'm going to make one myself. Dont worry, the rambling intro wasn't that bad.
+JAY WHITTAKER - Ha, Ha! I know some people just want to get straight to the tutorial - if that's what you want to call it, felt I had to warn the viewer!!
Wish I were you! This is a much cooler way to get a canteen cup lid other than ordering it off eBay like me 😂
You are very handy. Good vid.
Thanks for the great video my friend. I wish you love peace and health. Respect from Greece.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!! Atb, Simon.
Simon, a bloke in the woods from now i am bember of your channel my friend. Take care.
Navaxo Alàska Thank you my friend, I appreciate it.
I like the idea of the wooden form My first attempt long ago ended up like a banana boat...lol
Well done. That came out better than what I did. Thanks for sharing
Cheers John! Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching, Atb, Simon.
Sub'd
John Tewelow - Thank you John!
Absolutely fantastic mate, cracking job on the lid. They are hard to come by
Atb
Paul
51foxy - Thanks Paul, glad you enjoyed it! There are a couple of people about who knock them out, but always more fun to make yer own!! Cheers, Simon.
Brill! My son and I enjoyed watching your construction - good work! I suspect you make an entire channel just about outdoor equipment making...
+Peter Evans - Thanks for the kind words Peter, I do love to make stuff, keep tuned there'll be more 'make it' videos in the future! Cheers, Simon.
This was very satisfying to watch. Thanks for another great video Simon
Absolutely Awesome!
Awesome make Simon! Very clean job ! Thanks
Thank you John, glad you liked it! Atb, Simon.
that was very useful. i may be able to do it now after seeing how. wish somebody made a quality gi nesting canteen system that was bigger..... bigger cup / bigger canteen too. i looked at the one you have and wished that they had not tapered it down at the bottom. the usgi one is relatively small as well, generally speaking. stainless steel is so hard to work with. i sure like stainless steel though and more than aluminum. i have never really cared for the vertical canteen bottle systems. i thank you and i thumbed-up!
+Martina Dejaquiz - Thank you Martina, and thanks for the thumbs up! I guess all the nesting canteens are a similar size - about 1 pint fir the cup (the one I used was) and 1 litre (32oz) for the bottle. If you want a bigger cup/pot the only other option is to go for a large nesting pot that fits over a Nalgene or KleanKanteen bottle - Toaks make one in Ti and I believe there is now a bigger stainless steel one from the pathfinder school. Otherwise, there is always the Swedish army trangia canteen system (of which there is a stainless steel version if you are lucky enough to come across one!) that includes a larger pot, a lid that you can fry in, a denatured alcohol stove and stand and a fuel bottle - but no water bottle! It’s always a trade-off!!! Hope you manage to find a system that works for you. Thanks for stopping by! Atb, Simon.
Great job 👍
Another fantastic video.....thank you
Thanks Jeremy!
Good video mate, I like making my own kit where feasible aswell so i enjoyed watching this. Thanks for sharing. Take care, friend.
+AMBushcraft - Thank you mate! Man have shed, will make stuff!! Atb, Simon.
I love it!! I will make one myself!!!
Great video perfectly executed I enjoy watching your channel tremendously keep up the good work👍🎯🇺🇸
Great idea and great job making you lid! Thanks for sharing!
Nice video. Here's a tip for forming the aluminium. If you anneal it once you've cut out the shape it will be far easier to work. All you do is get a bar of soap, scribble over the aluminium like it's a wax crayon. Then heat up the ally with a blow lamp of hot air gun until the soap turns black, then plunge the sheet into cold water. It may deform a little, but will be far easier to bend and shape. Hope this helps.
Great tip! Thank you mate. 👍
Making a wooden mold is the key. Thanks
Neat. I was wondering a few minutes ago if it might be possible to make a whistling lid. Like a whistling kettle, but just a flat lid... with a whistle. I was thinking maybe a small dome bolt or similar, drilled and milled to imitate a train whistle or something of the sort.
Perhaps I should email ACME for advice, but while a teeny tiny ACME Thunderer would be cool, it would be a bit OTT I think. :D
I know nobody needs a whistling canteen cup, but...
I like the lid and even have the same style cup it would make a nice small project for me also do you enjoy pine needle tea if to I have found a nice way to make it if you are like most outdoors men and worry about pine sap from the needles use the paper coffee filters and some string to hold them closed in place of an infuser it works and is disposeble
Thanks Robert! Tip of the day!! 😁
Very nice job, very easy to follow, thanks for sharing
Great idea with the mess tins it never crossed my mind until you did it thanks I will make a couple myself chears mate god bless xpeacex
Thanks Lee, it’s always nice to recycle stuff! Cheers and Atb, Simon.
Great stuff. Have wanted to make a lid for my Crusader set. Just looked around my attic and found a cheap Poundland type Mess Tin to play with, so it looks like I have all the parts, including a rivet gun. Thanks so much for that. I Have subbed. Regards Mark.
Mark Anthony - Hi Mark, thanks for watching. I glad it was useful! Good old Poundland! It's a nice little project to do, doesn't take too long either. Cheers, Simon.
Fantastic job on the canteen cup lid, think I'll try one on the US canteen cup...PS met a lot of your Blokes during the Gulf War, and they were really super guys!
Cheers! Much better than the rubbish plastic one that the makers of the cup sell! Easy enough to make too!
Thanks for your reply, means a lot to have a real person on the other end! ATB
Nice job
easy to diy thanks simon
Brilliant mate! thanks!
Very nice!
I am asking this somewhat tongue in cheek, I am truly curious though......... but.....that contraption on your dog's head......is that how you have to leash a dog on safety island? Love what you do; making stuff that you can easily buy, just for the enjoyment of making stuff!! Glad I found your channel.
I thinķ that you are a suviver from that tv program the A team. Your ideas are so simple but brilliant. I will be trying out this task. All the best. And thank you.
Hahaha, thank you! It’s a nice little project to make! Cheers and all the best, Simon
Thank you , Simon .
🐺 Loupis Canis .
Aluminium flashing (for windows, construction) is thin enough you can cut it with scissors, but is plenty strong enough to be a lid.
loved it... going to try using your method...
Thank you! It’s pretty straight forward to make - hope your comes out well! Atb, Simon.
Great video Simon, thank you.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! Atb, Simon.
Superb
New sub here after watching this diy. Thanks!
+TeamAG Survival - Thanks for the sub, glad you enjoyed the video! Atb, Simon.
Verry Nice , made one today, thanks for info

Glad it turned out well Andre!
Cheers!
Nice to make something from scrap
And useble to
Going out this weekend to test iT
A proper job! I'm a fan of making your own gear.. Take care
Very nice.stanley makes a stainless cup with lid ..I believe its called adventure cup set I've had it for years.
Cheers! I’ve seen those sets - might have to invest in one - they are sometimes sold in SportsDirect at a reduced price! Atb, Simon
Nice job made a similar one for my mug 👍
Cheers, simple but really effective and better than the BCB plastic one! Atb, Simon.
You should always clamp metal down regardless of how soft it is, before drilling it as if the drill grabs it, it can make a bit of a mess of your fingers
Hey Simon.. new sub. Great channel, I'm just getting in to canoeing myself.. it's a new part of me I didn't know existed and so much fun.. I'd love to come up for a paddle.... you seem a great bloke. My two daughters are hopefully going to catch the bug to. Watch Ray Mears a lot got his books. But no substitute for time with a person of experience. I'm right next to the Taw and get out as much as I can. Thank you from sunny Devon.
Hi Damian. Canoeing is great isn’t it! The perfect way to explore one of our last remaining wildernesses - the rivers. I’m sure your daughters will love it too, your enthusiasm will see to that!
If you’re ever up this way and fancy a paddle, just shout! 👍😁🛶
Great effort and item looks great
It comes with a plastic lid & 6 gel packs £43 new on eBay but it's down to the seller some do lids some don't.
I ordered that metal one from eBay but not heard anything yet I suppose it will come next week..
I think the crusader is a great bit of kit.
Me too - great system and bombproof - unlike some of the ultralight titanium cook sets!
Just ordered off ebay thanks cheers mate
Good job on your canteen cup lid.
Cheers Jimmy, Atb, Simon
Very well made, thank you!
Good idea, i'm going to make one just for fun.
