While others are reviewing expensive and elaborate survival items, James is going full hobo and turning everyday items into hobo camping gear. Another superlative video!
Not because we have to, because we want to. Those who can make these wonderful projects will always be better prepared in a serious emergency. Lost or damaged gear, no problem, create something useful with what can be found.
Former 50 of 74 years a hobo. WOW !!! Great improvisation. I will add the herring fry pan, the spam boil cup, and small grill to my nest of tin can cooking set. Make a feast fit for a king should I go back on the road.
I always added black pepper to the scrambled eggs when we’d take our children camping, it helped camouflage any insects that may have accidentally gotten into the pan 😉 It’s a trick I learned from my dad.
A (recycled) pill bottle to carry your pepper? (Have done this while traveling.) Oh, if wire coat hangers are not to be had, one might secure a TIG welding rod or three. These are 36 inches long, and available in varied thicknesses. I’d use the ER308 (stainless) variety, in 3/32 inch.
His channel just keeps getting better and better the creativity is off the charts and it takes quite a bit to impress me And I’m a crotchety old bugger
While it's definitely the easier option to just buy a cheap mess tin (during the summer months you can get dirt cheap sets) - I won't deny this has to be one or the most insanely resourceful videos I've seen. Absolutely incredible you could cook and eat like that just by repurposing scrap materials - great work!
James, Who Knew: SPAM Could Be So Useful. I'm Absolutely Amazed At All Your Life Hacks and Your Willingness To Share Them! Thank You and God Bless My Friend.
Reminds me of my boyhood, reading Boys Life, making tuna can spooled up corregated cardboard and parrifin wax stoves. Thanks, James, you put a smile on my face.
I love your ingenuity. I think the most important takeaway thing to take away from this video is not the exact cans to use but the mindset and skill set to come up with projects line that and find materials that can be converted into useful things
One of your better videos. Great job. Thanks. If I may add, you won't always have butter. So cook the bacon first, remove and then cook the eggs in the fat from the bacon. Been doing that for years in a skillet at home. No loss of bacon grease.
I loved the original cook kit but knew I would never find one here in England . This kit you made is super impressive and I love that you are using cans that can be found in every country worldwide . Fantastic video 👍
Wow! Not sure what else I can say. Turning trash into something useful. Helping us save money, save the planet, and be better people. I am not sure where you get your ideas, but what you do reminds me of my Great Aunt & Uncle. I guess because they grew up in the depression they saved and used everything. We did not visit them often, but I do remember seeing some amazing things every time I went there. Makes me sad that we take for granted our elders. Wish I had more time with them, the things I could have learned. I am amazed at what you come up/show. If more people thought like that instead of just being consumers, the planet, as well as humans, would be better off. My hat is off to you. Thank you for educating us. Please keep it up. It is so refreshing to see someone talk about something that is possible and then show exactly how to do it. Then after doing it, show themselves using what they made and how well it works. I love WayPointSurvival videos! Thank you for caring and sharing.
We went to the hobo convention in Britt IA couple of weeks ago. We had a blast at the hobo museum. Met some nice folks. At the memorial for Shoestring, quite a few folks shared experiences, adventures and stories about him. His two sisters and son spoke, too. A great time.
I love the pace of this channel, slow, steady and very old school - One of several culturally valuable channels that refuse to let the past just slip into faded memory.👍 Also love the copious amounts of butter used to fry everything...we are clearly dealing with a man of culture here! 😎
Clever! Ideas like this are a great inspiration and educational. And people think "recycling" is something relatively new. Our ancestors were doing things like this long before we got here. "Do more with less" was a way of life with them, and we modern folks would do well to learn (actually, re-learn) this philosophy.
A very cool DIY kit. I love this Hobo series, I watch every single one of them. I recently have been working on a survival kit based on a stainless steel Bento Box with locking clips. I am the type of person to look at something for a week figuring out new ways to use it and you have inspired a lot of ideas.
Really, really well done! So well thought out and cleverly constructed, and basically free, since you would eat the food from the containers it is made from. When it starts getting damaged, or worn, just have some more Spam or Herring and replace it! I really appreciate the practical and adaptive nature of your videos. So smart and reminiscent of the clever and frugal mindset of the turn of the century (20th 🙂) where nothing is wasted. I don't think my Grandpa would ever throw anything away, and a straightened nail is just as good as a new one.
My oldest Grandson is really into your video's. You make things the primitive way, he really rags me about it. I told him, I spent a lifetime getting all these tools together, that if you are lucky one day will be yours and I intend to use them as God wanted me too. lol.
Ok waypoint, I've sat back, I've watched, I've commented a bit. Now, u officially have my attention. What u just described is an awesome, inexpensive mess kit that could be used in disaster scenarios.... Bravo, finally, something that a common man can afford to keep his family fed. Keep it up. Thank you so very much! I really appreciate all the kind words and I hope that this is definitely used not only by campers but also by people who are in need.
@@WayPointSurvival let me put something in perspective for ya. The reason my name is doc is because I'm an EMT by trade.... But also, living in SC we have a rich history that is beginning to be forgotten. You're preserving these traditions and this knowledge is of great importance for future generations. When I was homeless, I had to survive, I did it because I knew how, taught to me in scouting. The younger generations need guidance because the world isn't always kind and as my youngest son will tell you, " you survive by being comfortable with being uncomfortable" I would implore you to continue this series with diy's that others can do at home because it only takes one misstep in this world to end up where I was.

For any hobo’s with $15 spare you can get an army nesting kit with much more internal space that uses the fry pan handle to lock it all down, there are 3 pans (2 with handles) with lots of space inside once nested to improvise. Dave Canterbury has a recent review of them on his channel, they also have an attachment on the outside handle so you can hook them on the outside of a back pack to dry off after you’ve washed them. This is a nifty little kit but the metal is a bit thin for my liking, the kit Dave reviewed is stainless steel and much thicker so will last you many years as army kit is made to do, for the most part.
Yay, back to our regular programming. Extremely creative and useful! Better yet, I have everything needed on hand to duplicate. Believe it or not, the little folding grill impressed me the most. I'll be making a similar one for sure. Great video for sure! 🤓👍
