    I love comparisons of similar inks because it helps me see the subtle differences that can be key between just liking an ink and loving it.

    Comparisons of one color. This is a great idea and quite helpful. I know cameras and lighting affect what we actually see. But where I have a reference in the set you're comparing, it is very helpful. Thank you Dave. Now I have something I can do with my own small ink collection, too.

    I like the comparison of one color. I use the Pilot Iroshizuku in one of its purple shades, which I like a lot, but sometimes I want to try new colors. I am often disappointed with new colors so it's nice to see those colors on paper first.

    I enjoyed the review quite a bit. I would also love to see more videos like this one. I think doing only one color at a time is great, because we can see the variations within that color group. In my case, it put the MontBlanc on my radar and the Diamine Majestic Purple as well, two inks that I hadn't considered before. So thanks for the review and I hope you'll do more.

    • @PenultimateDave

      Thanks Cyn Toh! I think doing a video just on a particular colour band is probably the best, but I can also see some people wanting to see maybe new ink colours that are released, so I'll try to do a bit of both. Another good purple is Diamine Imperial Purple which seems to be a more popular version of purple, although I don't have that one and prefer Majestic Purple myself.

    It's interesting how different ink preferences are. I have a 30 ml bottle of the Diamine Majestic Purple that I bought because I wanted to figure out what ink colours I like. Turns out I hate it and that (bright) purple is just absolutely not for me. My favourite purple out of the ones you showed is the Akkerman, which I realise has a lot of red in it and is pretty pinkish. Oh well. :D

    Really great idea, and thanks for doing it! If it's down to me, I would say stick with the single colour, just gives a better point of reference for those of us who are dyed in the wool ink enthusiasts. Would love to see your take on Green, Red, and Orange... also Blue, but I'm pretty set in my ways for that one.
    If you're looking for some more purples I would definitely recommend the following:
    Diamine - Bilberry
    Bungubox - The ink of witch
    Cross - Violet (poor man's Lamy Dark Lilac)
    All of which are worth a try, as for me I'm ordering some KWZ Gummi Berry...

    Yes the review is very useful, colour, quantity and price. The really dark colours don't look very purpely in the video. Blues, Reds,blacks. Safety use re fountain pens and these inks would be good to know.

    • @PenultimateDave
      @PenultimateDave  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Andrew, safety use re fountain pens with inks is always a hot topic but quite difficult. I've had some purple inks that I'd class as safe in most of my pens but then a couple of pens they've stained, so that's really a tricky one. Likewise I'm sure a lot would like to know how good the inks are on various papers, I tend to use good fountain pen quality paper so either Tomoe River or Oxford Optik paper to be on the safe side.

    Good test. To my eyes, only no. 4, 7 and 8 qualify as Purple. The others have to much red or blue or even green in them turning Bordeaux/Claret or blackish. It shows how important testing is and not trusting the names on the bottles. One of the cheapest high quality Purple I like to mention is Pelikan 4001 Violet. It comes in a 62.5 ml bottle for only €8. Also in cartridges. The other end of the price spectrum would be Iroshizuku Murasaki Shikibu, also a real Purple to my eyes, and 4 times more expensive.

    • @PenultimateDave
      @PenultimateDave  4 роки тому +2

      You're right about the bordeau/claret for sure. I haven't tried any of the Pelikan 4001 inks yet, I'll keep my eye out for Violet. I have Mursaki-Shikibu and like that quite a lot.

      I can certainly try, but what do you call blood inks? Some call blood very bright red, like when you cut yourself or prick your finger, but others call blood red inks more of a darker plasma style of ink colour, like a Diamine Oxblood.

    Thanks for an interesting survey. Like you, I am a great fan of purple inks, preferrably the darker variety. I liked your selection and have many of these inks. I would also recommend the new Sailor Manyo Kuzu ink that is close to the Amethyst. Diamine Tyrian Purple is also worth a look.
    One of the most irritating things about Pelikan's Ink of the Year is that once the production line is sold out, this is it: instead of making a popular IOTY ink part of the permanently available collection, Pelikan discontinues production. One of the best IOTY was Amethyst purple, which is quite close to MB Lavender Purple but subtler. Luckily I managed to get several bottles as a stock but wish Pelikan would re-introduce it. Another great purple is the Iroshizuky Edo-Murasaki, recently re-issued for the Tokyo Itoya fair in January: I managed to get a stock as well. Again Pilot should keep great inks available.

    • @PenultimateDave
      @PenultimateDave  4 роки тому

      Thanks! I don't have a large amount of Sailor inks myself, I'll have to check out the Sailor Manyo Kuzu as I'm not familiar with that one. Diamine Tyrian Purple is an interesting purple and one I keep thinking about picking up myself.
      I agree with you regarding Pelikan Inks of the Year and also other inks too, I was very much upset when I discovered Sailor Jentle Apricot and then I couldn't get it, then thankfully Sailor brought out Kin-Mokusei which is almost identical, so I bought 5 bottles of this, and then I was able to get a couple of bottles of Jentle Apricot from the US. It definitely enables my FOMO switch!

    • @freespirit995
      @freespirit995 4 роки тому

      It is interesting that you have the same reaction as I have to really special inks which are likely to get discontinued or become hard to find. After searching online and in various Italian pen shops (there are far more there than in the UK), I managed to collect 9 bottles of Edelstein Amethyst, which I think should last me for the forseable future... Another ink I love is the little known Kyoto TAG ink "Bengara iro" (literally Bengal colour), a deep rich red with brown and purples: for some reason this is seldom stocked by vendors who usually only have the other Kyoto inks, so I managed to get 5 bottles as a stock...

    Diamine Imperial Purple, Robert Oster Claret, Monteverde Charoite, Noodler's North African Violet, Diamine Satin Lilac, Lamy Dark Lilac, Iroshizuku Murasaki-shikibu, Monteverde Rose Noir, Noodler's Burgundy, Robert Oster Black Violet, Cross Violet, Diamine Monboddos Hat.
    The problem is that individually I might think of them as purple, but when placed side by side I then have to differentiate them as violet, lavender, burgundy, wine, true purple, etc. It can get confusing, lol.
    I'm using the Cross Violet right now in my Visconti Homo H.S. Midnight In Florence with the 1.3mm stub, and it's one purple-icious combination. I still find it hard to believe you've never gotten the M.I.F. model, as mine is gorgeous.
    Speaking of the Homo Sapiens, I placed my order for the new Blue Lagoon last night, with a fine nib. I just hope I get a good pattern since it can really vary with these materials. I know my Bronze Swirl isn't nearly as nice as yours is.

    • @PenultimateDave
      @PenultimateDave  4 роки тому +1

      Diamine Imperial Purple is definitely one that's on my to buy list but I never seem to get round to it because I love Majestic Purple so much. I will have to give that a try! I missed out on Lamy Dark Lilac but have a formula somewhere on how to make something close to it. I also have Pilot Iroshizuku Murasaki-shikibu, I'll try on future ink videos to do probably 9 inks if I can or perhaps more if I can get them on a single page.
      I completely agree, I always see all of the inks in a single colour band but then when put side by side there's purple, lavender, violet, so many different subset of colours.
      Oh, regarding MIF.... watch this space ;-) have you tried Gummiberry in it? I might have a video sometime soon on that ;-)
      Congrats on the Blue Lagoon, I have a few 3x Visconti's in for review at the moment and there might be a couple more on their way as soon as Visconti re-open in Italy which I believe is likely to be this coming week after Easter.

    Hi Dave . Please comment about the particulate matter that some of these inks have in them and if you would put them in all your pens. I believe some of these inks are prone to clogging. Which ones?

    • @PenultimateDave
      @PenultimateDave  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Gerold, typically I would not put shimmer inks (with particulate) into more expensive pens. I know expensive means different to most people, for me I'd say that's pens that are over £100/€100/$100.
      I typically mostly put shimmer inks whether it's Herbin or Diamine Shimmertastic inks with particulate into my TWSBI Diamond 580's. These are piston pens which some would say are harder to clean the particulate out of, but honestly I haven't had any problem whatsoever. I don't disassemble the pens entirely, but I will unscrew the nib unit, insert a blunt ink syringe into the body and squirt it full of clean water and then suck out the water, and do this 3-4 times to clean the body. I then will flush the nib section with a bulb syringe full of water until the particulate runs clean. I rarely have any particulate left in the body or in the nib/feed after cleaning.
      Typically I find when using particulate inks that Diamine Shimmertastic tend to cling to the walls of converters or piston bodied pens less than Herbin. To get a good mix of particulate you do have to rotate the pen a lot before writing and continue to rotate it whilst writing otherwise you can see some temporary blocks / clogs of particulate when trying to write.
      I am always careful to not use particulate inks in higher priced pens just in case, although I have not really had any issues in lower priced pens. I typically err on the side of caution.
