Not necessarily. I believe it's both in a sense. As someone else mentioned, statistically and realistically, you really don't see many woman comedians and what not. We see that. And there's a reason. Men just happen to be more prone to the ‘funny.’ And that's the truth, plain and simple. We don't know why exactly, but it's something rooted in biology and relationships apparently. However, none of this voids the fact and possibility for woman to be either. I'm aware of that. I'm also just speaking from personal experience and as a woman myself. If that helps.
Historically women were taught by their own mothers to think inwardly and men were to think outwardly, but times are changing, if I have a daughter she's going to play with a machete and have a sense of humor.

Here's a thought: Boys grow up teasing each other, pushing each others' limits and growing thicker skin so when they grow up this means that they can handle sarcasm better (which is what most comedy builds on). This behaviour is biological, it's like lion cubs wrestling, but with words.

The thing isn't so much that women aren't funny, but female comedy isn't funny. Or at least a great deal less so. The difference between male and female comedy I noticed is that men often tend to go with themselves as the butt of the joke one way or another. Even in stories about their mother in law or their girlfriends, as Claudia interprets. more often than not, the guy will make an ass of himself in those stories and that will be the punchline. Female comedy on the other hand is more third person oriented. It's based on "let me tell you what I witnessed" types of stories, which often times are also "you'd have to have been there" kind of stories. They simply don't work too well because of the several layers of insulation between the punchline and the audience. For male comedy, we have the audience vehicle right there, we can laugh at or laugh with the comedian, because he is taking us into the joke through his participation. But of course there's a risk involved there. You intentionally turn yourself into the butt of the joke, that's not an easy thing to do, it's taking a risk. A risk you don't necessarily have to take. However, there are female comedians out there doing male comedy, and they are great. Sarah Millican for example, a British comedian. She's just great, but she's also not afraid to laugh about herself.
There are indeed very funny women out there. But it's true that these are a rarity. Personally, I have no idea how Amy Schumer got as popular as she is now. Her whole schtick is, "Hey, everyone! Tampons, amirite?" And when it's not that, it usually falls flat anyway. Real funny women in history include, but are not limited to, Lucille Ball, Carol Brunette, Tina Fey, and ShoeOnHead.
I think the reason I don't know of a lot of famous women whom I see as funny is because my sense of humor is generally mundane. I won't laugh at current events, but I will laugh at a malfunctioning toaster. This is why I find Paula Poundstone hilarious.
I find many women not funny. I also find many men not funny. The last few years I've tried to point out the reason why i dislike women comedians just because I hadn't really thought WHY I didn't like them. The women comedians I find not funny I wouldn't find funny even if they were men. If you are not funny, you are not fucking funny.
They try too hard, that is why. Humour should always come naturally. I don't consider myself humorous, but my father is, and I inherited his loose sarcasm from him, so I have a few 'funny' moments. It's gotta be in the genes, though.
***** That might actually be it. Generally speaking, the ones I know I don't like seem to try too hard. And i dont like forced comedy, male or female comedian.
coolwhiprofl Seth Rogen is a good example of that. His sexual comedy is so dry. Mel Brooks did it right; hell, most of his comedy wouldn't be allowed anymore in today's Hollywood. Blazing Saddles would be blacklisted and removed.
+blacktigerpaw1 similar thing happens with me. I don't usually try to make jokes but I have a strong sarcasm which if not noticed ends up making a joke. Since most people don't share my sarcasm they usually think I'm joking and then laugh.
Regardless of the whole men vs women thing can we all agree that 'politically correct' comedy is the most boring cringe-worthy unfunny shit out there? Amirite?

The difference is they don't think the "man" is trying to fuck them over on general purposes. Changing words, men evil, ect. If radical feminists want to see REAL oppression, go to Saudi Arabia et al.
*Here's my theory:* One of the evolutionary explanations for why we laugh is that our ape-like ancestors would vocalize to warn each other of threats, and would vocalize again when the threat was gone to signal that it was safe. The "false alarm" vocalization evolved into what we now call laughter. Think about the things that make you laugh. Most jokes employ an element of surprise or shock. When you hear the start of a joke, your brain begins establishing expectations, but then the punchline comes and your expectation is violated, thus momentarily triggering a threat response in your brain which is then quickly overridden by the "false alarm" response which manifests as laughter. This is the reason why we laugh at dark comedy, racial humor, pranks, slapstick, the stupidity and social _faux pas_ of other people, and so on. When somebody says or does something which we know is socially unacceptable, our brains perceive that as abnormal and therefore potentially threatening, then realize it's a false threat and react with laughter. Now, with all that said, it should be pointed out that much of what we find funny has its basis in misery, morbidity, cruelty, and so on. The Amazing Atheist pointed out in his video _Tumblr Feminists_ that we, as humans, joke about these things because laughing about them allows us to momentarily transcend the desperation of our situation and to view the absurdity of our circumstances. What we're basically doing is we're taking things that are threatening and turning them into things which aren't, thus allowing ourselves to laugh at them, and thereby enable ourselves to rise above them. Now onto why men are funnier than women. If a sense of humor is, at it's core, a way of coping with the upsetting realities of life, then it's not at all surprising that men are generally funnier than women because men are socially conditioned to not express their emotions. It's socially acceptable for a woman to cry, but a man is seen as weak if he does the same. When a woman is experiencing stress, she usually has a social license to complain openly and honestly about it. But in most circumstances, a man doesn't, so instead, he expresses himself through the filter of humor. Over the course of a lifetime of being told "boys don't cry" and to "man up", a man cultivates a sense of humor as a means of expressing himself without showing weakness. Think about some of the most famous male comedians. Charlie Chaplin came from a childhood of poverty and was forced to work in factories when he was only seven years old. Robin Williams suffered from suicidal depression. George Carlin was raised by a single mother with whom he had a troubled relationship. Richard Pryor's mother was a prostitute and his father was a violent pimp. Bill Cosby was raised by his mother who cleaned houses for a living, his father was an alcoholic who was barely ever around, and he basically had to raise his little brothers by himself, one of which died when he was eight. Female comedians also often have bad childhoods. Ellen DeGeneres' parents divorced when she was young, and she learned to be funny to cheer up her mother. Amy Schumer was born into a wealthy family, but they went bankrupt when she was nine after her father was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, forcing them to move to a poorer neighborhood where she became a victim of antisemitism. Sarah Silverman had depression as a child and was put on Xanax when she was only 14. While these sorts of tumultuous origins aren't common to all comedians, I think it's apparent that a strong sense of humor comes from having to cope with hardship, and while it's true that both men and women can experience hardship, I think the fact that men are expected to hide their emotions leads more men to developing a stronger sense of humor than women generally do.

There's a bar in my neighborhood in Baltimore that has stand up comedy and comedy open mics... The funniest part is watching guys who think they're funny, but aren't at all. The women are sometimes funny, and if they're not at least they have tits.
I would argue that a woman CAN make vagina jokes and have men laugh at them. It's just a matter of how you relate that joke to your audience. I once had a female co-worker ask me why so many men are hung up on the size of their penises, and I answered (very matter-of-factly) "Well, would you rather your vagina be tight or very, very loose?" Because I was able to relate the idea to something she'd recognize, she INSTANTLY understood what I was saying, and it got a big laugh out of her. Conversely, Amy Schumer brings up how she's constantly touching her baby niece's vagina while giving her a bath and it doesn't build up to anything... Yeah, that's just uncomfortable... :S "I don't find myself particularly funny..." Well, I guess we're just gonna have to agree to disagree on this one. Subbed! lol
Bobsheaux So you just basiclly explained to me how you (a man) told female a vagina "joke" and she laughed. This dosent back up your first point about how females can make these jokes work

It's nice down here. :) That's the advantage of having a gutter humor, you just look down in the gutter, and hey, there it is. :)
The thing is, Claudia is 100% right. Women are afraid to be funny because it's risky and society likes to shit on women for trying. I know how I personally feel, and I am hilarious with my sister, but unfortunately I frequently choose not to risk it with others. Could be due to a lack of testosterone/confidence that women don't go out on that limb or due to social pressures and expectations, but I think the sense of humor is innate in everyone.
@@SaintSC05 No, there have definitely been studies demonstrating biases and social pressures on women to not take up space in mixed-gender, group conversation. One study showed that when women are talking only 30% of the time, men perceive the women in the group as talking too much lol. I'd assume that the lack of appreciation or even subtle hostility toward female participation is even stronger when it comes to humor - because humor is sort of a risky display of wit that earns you attention and social capital if you do it right. I think men subconsciously feel that that's their domain, and there's some social dominance psychology attached to it. If you check out any female comedian on youtube, there are always men in the comments either talking shit about how "women aren't funny," or giving back-handed compliments like "the only funny female comedian." I think this attitude just makes a lot of women feel uncomfortable. Humor is risky and if you fail to land a joke, it's socially awkward. Society is easy on men for shitty jokes, forgivingly letting them try again next time and get better with practice. Society is derisive toward women for making shitty jokes, sending the message "just stop trying." This all sounds dramatic, but I think it's something subtle but pervasive, going on subconsciously under the surface of our interactions.
@@SaintSC05 You can point out social issues or double standards and still live your life. Personally, yeah it was a “me problem” but I’m definitely getting over it. Every way society negatively influences you becomes a “you problem” that you have to overcome. That doesn’t mean you can’t point out the root of the problem. My point is just that I disagree with the idea that women are inherently unfunny. I think society encourages male humor and discourages female humor. Im not saying that people have to stay products of society or that it’s impossible to be your own person, just that social influences have an effect.
@@SaintSC05 I'm saying, society can affect you in such a way that you develop a problem, which you could call a "personal problem" in that it's now your problem and you have to solve it. But my point is that, while we're solving our own problems, we can look at why we have them, and discuss the root of the problem - which is, a lot of the time due to social conditioning.
@@SaintSC05 Lol so when you're an actual child being shaped by your experiences, being conditioned by your environment, you're the one "deciding to let society negatively affect you"? No one "decides" that, unless they are actively rejecting self-improvement. You can reverse conditioning if you work on it - that's where personal agency comes in. But to act like society and culture doesn't affect people? That's ridiculous.
I disagree that you should laugh just because someone tried to be funny. I would hate if others faked a laugh at my jokes and I don't intend to fake laugh at others because of it.
I generally give people just enough of a reaction to let them save face, but it's little enough to let them know that they need to step up their game if they want a real laugh.
Exactly. I'm just done with school so I can relate to that idea, I had many schools with many girls trying to laugh at stupid things. I bet many of them didn't find those stupid things funny. They laughed because they were embarassed, didn't know what to do, didn't want to look like mood killers, things like that. It has to do with their fake image and them not being able to show themself how they are, probably because they're scared and school is a big social aspect of their life. Boys have that too, but it's a bit different, they rather tend to be more aggressive and do more stupid jokes because they want the attention of the laughters etc, I've yet to see a shy boy laughing embarassed, not saying that this is not possible in a class ofc. It's just not the stereotypical image they want to have, doesn't fit. And it's also "everyone laughs, therefore this was funny, therefore I must laugh" But at the end of the day it is your responsibility to laugh and not laugh, she can't blame other people for that, and fake laughing to give someone the feeling that they did good is rude. That can end in them doing more of those jokes, while they'll be hated more and more. You'd do him and yourself a favour if you would say what you find funny and what not, this way he could show a different humour of him, or find other people who shares his humour so he could fully enjoy his free time in school.
I personally think that the reason why women seem to be less funny (generally speaking) is because they tend to be more risk averse than men from a social standpoint. They're more likely to consider the ramifications of potentially offending someone, whereas males often just either don't care or don't think someone might be offended. That type of hesitation can be lethal in comedy, as it's almost wholly reliant on some form of suffering. then again, I'm a guy; certainly not the most qualified person to be talking about what's in women's heads. It's all speculation really
As a woman, I agree with this statement. Concerning the social standpoint, in my experience, the men in my life tend to think less (or care less) about the effect their statements have on the people around them. I'm not saying all men are socially unskilled, but in my experience women, in general, tend to have more social graces, which as you said could lead to taking less risks, especially with comedy.
Men use humor to try to divert from masculine energy, In social settings ... Before humor all we thought in social situations was "how many of these people would it take to defeat me? Or a mammoth? What's that light in the sky and can it kill a mammoth?"
Bad comics (female and male) lean heavily on gross-out humour and vulgarity while lacking in timing, misdirection or any of the basic elements of comedy. It just so happens that many female comics who fit this mold get more exposure for some reason. I don't believe relatability of the material is the biggest barrier.
Trey parker and Matt stone often use vulgarity, but they're also pretty clever (the old seasons) idk, when they go for shock humor on south park, they usually have a point behind it, it's not just vulgar for the sake of vulgarity.
Good comedians make people laugh, regardless of gender. Bad comedians make people groan regardless of gender. Since when are women not funny? Seriously, I remember Rosanne Barr killing at stand up back in the day, and Weaver and Potts were just as good as the boys in Ghostbusters. Rhonda Shear was funny as hell, easily as funny as Gilbert Godfrey (and much easier on the eyes) when they hosted USA's "UP all night". And Elvira had a WICKED (no pun intended......ok maybe a little pun intended) sense of humor.
Is...it is just me, or does the woman in the second video sound like she's constantly on the verge of tears? She sounds like she's seconds away from a breakdown, and that she's forcing herself to smile in a desperate attempt to keep it together long enough to get the video out, before she drowns her sorrows in alcohol. I have no idea if that's accurate, but that's what I'm hearing.
I'm watching this and all I can think of is my mother and how she makes me feel every time I make a joke to her and she just kind of lowers her eyes absent mindedly. She's literally told me flat out she doesn't think I'm funny, right after I told her I was thinking about trying stand up comedy. Way to be a supportive parent, right?
Sometimes you need a bit of truth actually. I mean Idk if you are funny or not but comedy is kind of a risky place to be. If you fail your confidence will get hit by a truck

Nice "joke"
No actually
^ this
Nail on the fuckin' head m8!
More bluntly, I think a lot of female comedians just like talking about their vaginas.
+Supertron OMG ^^ FOREVER DANDY, BABY!
I think the reason I don't know of a lot of famous women whom I see as funny is because my sense of humor is generally mundane. I won't laugh at current events, but I will laugh at a malfunctioning toaster. This is why I find Paula Poundstone hilarious.

*You are the only one who is right.*
*Here's my theory:*
One of the evolutionary explanations for why we laugh is that our ape-like ancestors would vocalize to warn each other of threats, and would vocalize again when the threat was gone to signal that it was safe.

Retrac1999 Phantom
Women don't exist on the Internet. Just a bunch of catfish.
Hes a phantom.
crazy sea-mango literal catfish?🐟
Society is derisive toward women for making shitty jokes, sending the message "just stop trying."
This all sounds dramatic, but I think it's something subtle but pervasive, going on subconsciously under the surface of our interactions.
@@elhammo7478 lmao bold of you to assume I ever interact with humans

I generally give people just enough of a reaction to let them save face, but it's little enough to let them know that they need to step up their game if they want a real laugh.
I dunno why she thnks people are that polite either. Here, if it isnt funny, they won't laugh. Make it funny or shut up lol
And it's also "everyone laughs, therefore this was funny, therefore I must laugh"
But at the end of the day it is your responsibility to laugh and not laugh, she can't blame other people for that, and fake laughing to give someone the feeling that they did good is rude. That can end in them doing more of those jokes, while they'll be hated more and more. You'd do him and yourself a favour if you would say what you find funny and what not, this way he could show a different humour of him, or find other people who shares his humour so he could fully enjoy his free time in school.
“I hate ideologies”
Is that... an ideology?
Confused screaming
There's no escape!
Hating philosophy is a philosophy
Nihilism is basically the ideology of having no ideologies.

I'm not saying all men are socially unskilled, but in my experience women, in general, tend to have more social graces, which as you said could lead to taking less risks, especially with comedy.

good to hear that I'm not as out of touch as I thought. Thanks :D
lol most men are just as risk averse. Why else is their this nice guy infestation? Because their pussays
That train of thought is also part of the reason for male apathy. Risk aversion in itself, but on the other end of the spectrum.
That guy with the face What do you mean?
Smashing two Hershey bars together is till this day the best joke I've ever seen on youtube.
i believe that most male stand up comedians aren't afraid of being offensive. that's why they are more funny
Yeah I totally agree. Guys don’t care about being offensive and they don’t fear criticism to the extent that women do.
That's why I love my friends, we're not afraid of poking fun at each other
i acually don't find comedians funny.
@@emanuela4223 ok nobody gives a shit
@@totallynotme8153 I do
I think most of Junes humor is pretty spot on though. Moral of the story seems to be: stop being so eager to generalize.
"This is the worst case of internalized misogyny I've seen in years... STAND BACK!" hahahaahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Joan rivers was funny as hell and used a lot of vulgarity.
Brayden Carlin used vulgarity and was the best comedian of our time
Is that why Norm Macdonald is considered by many in the comedy scene to be the funniest comedian. Perfect timing and topics
True
That sounds really dark but is for some reason incredibly funny
She sounds like Emma Watson in a way. Always sounds like she's on the verge of tears.
I hear it too
It looks like she killed someone
“I’m not perfect. I consider myself a feminist” the British lady literally said this
She's also British which is a far worse crime

That feminist looked like her face was Photoshopped on
Bitch used the face swap filter lmao
cake face
I think she's wearing those tight, rubber, holy wood mask to hide her face.
In fact it was _photoshopped on_... ;-)
Ouch, you know it's bad when you have to hide your own face with another one!
What do you mean, women aren't funny? Just look at Amy Schu- oh wait.
Sara Cathro Amy Schumer LOL HAHAHAHA she is funny... but not exactly the way she wants to be
Jonathan C Amy sucks
"They're not funny to me"

Same though
ikr XD
That was incredibly funny to me tbh.
I think Shoe is fucking hilarious, one of the reasons I watch her
Sollatare agreed, she cracks me up more than most youtubers I'm subscribed to
Agreed. I subscribed today.
Sollatare yet they're mature good reasoned videos
When I started watching this video as a recent Shoe follower, I thought "great! reasonable responses I can relate to." By the end, it felt much more like a 2024 "tiktok satire or not?" video.
this video itself to some extent proves some women can be very funny
Not really tbqh FAM 😂😂👌👌
She's taken. So no need to lie.
No one anywhere ever made any claim that even resembles "women cannot be funny".
With special stress on the words"to some extent". ;)
