Brain is an insanely talented drummer. I love all the drummers of Primus equally because they can each do something the others cannot, but this video specifically showcases how amazing and technical Brain’s drumming is. Herb, Brain, and Jay’s styles are all so unique and the songs they play highlight their abilities so well.
the brown album is one of the greatest albums of primus! its really different but really creative! listen to it a couple of more times (stoned) and u'll understand!
This song grooves so hard! I really do hope one day brain plays with primus again. I just love how it just went into a completely different direction when he joined. Oh and if y'all didn't know already Jay left and Herb is picking it back up.
For anyone wondering how to count the beat in this song; The time is in 11/8 (11 eighth notes per bar) and the melody is a 3 bar phrase (beat 11 in bar 1 and beat 1 in bar 2 are tied, and beat 11 in bar 2 and beat 1 in bar 3 are tied). The pulse of the song, which is what u would bob ur head to or stomp your foot too, is a dotted quarter note (3 eighth notes) so its quick lol. its kinda hard to explain with out showing a sheet of music or breaking it down on an instrument for you to hear but ill attempt to continue. in the entire phrase there are 33 beats, but the pulse, what you feel, is 11. ill try to paint a picture and count the beats with key board symbols lol | = bar lines to separate bars 8 = eighth note 4* = dotted quarter note (3 8th notes ties together) 4 = quarter note > = 8th rest (same value just no sound) 4* = 888 4 = 88 this is a bar of 11/8 in 8th notes; | 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 |, in dotted quarter notes and one regular quarter note; | 4* 4* 4* 4| heres the pulse written literally - | 4* 4* 4* 4 | 8 4* 4* 4* 8 | 4 4* 4* 4* | this is what it feels like | 4* 4* 4* 4* 4* 4* 4* 4* 4* 4* 4* | heres the drum part written literally - | 48 48 48 4 | 8 48 48 8 | 8 8 48 888 888| (i grouped them together to try and make a little more sense but who knows if it worked lol) when brain does his little fast snare roll thats the end of the phrase (the last 2 beats of the pulse in the phrase) and then it starts over if this is hard to comprehend (cause it was hard to explain and im not sure if i did a good idea lol) feel free to email me and i can email you the pdf and a midi of the sheet music.
+Windom Earle 5 + 6 = 11, 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 11. You can count however is easiest for you, but I like to keep it all in one time signature. I hear the phrase as a 3 bar phrase in 11/8 which keeps a smooth pulse but still keeps people guessing, and it keeps Ler tight.
I'm a drummer and I have played this song like dozens of times, and I do NOT think it so complicatedly :D It's like alternating 7/8 and 6/8 bars, and with a triplet feel. It's easier to think of the melody, than some complex math equation.... but you know Brain the drummer is a drum nerd so I guess he knows exactly what he is doing. 'ts great!!!
But if I gotta pick one, I’m going with Tim... those first 4 albums are unmatched... I love the Brown album very much, and Green Naugahyde is one of my favorite albums too... maybe I’m a sucker for nostalgia.. but FF, Cheese, Pork, and Tales are tops
I'm going to have to figure out a way to write a top comment to this song that knocks this one off the top. Gotta think about it for sure to make sure it takes. I won't even get any friends or bots to "like it on up" for me.
It is good to hear playing a song almost entirely overhand. This was an underrated album in my mind. I loooveee Lalonde's guitar playing. The perfect melodic counterpoint to Les
I think that Herb is the perfect drummer for primus, he gives it a unique sound, the "primus" sound that always characterize it, but as a drummer there's no one like Brain, the way he uses the hi-hats and all the rudiments he applied is just amazing. PS sorry for the mispelled I'm Mexican xD
I got your point and you are right, Brain had a lot of groove but as the biggest mexican fan of primus I got to say that Tim Herb Alexander fits perfectly the unique style of Les and Larry.
No one can replace the "herb man"!!! and i just wanna say that LaLonde is one of the most underrated guitarists of the 90's!!! kinda hard to stand up with les!!!
awesome song, has a Police/reggae feel to it, always wonder what Primus would sound like if they went ska for an album. Would be prbly the best ska album ever!
good for u man... u see now?! .. it's a great album!! kinda funky but heavy too, and funny in a strange way!! Primus has to be one of the most creative bands ever! peace out bro
it depnends on the copy... I think they fixed it cuz my copy reads this as kalamazoo but my buidy baught the album like 2 months later and its listed correctly, but yes you are correct it took me like a month to figure out what rhis song was actually called :P
y not indeed! I remember seeing them in London when Les was sporting this fine crop of hair - and wearing an England football top (clearly pandering hehehe). Brain had a picture of Leonardo di Caprio on the kick drum. lol. Les opened proceedings by thanking the crowd for Oasis and hoping that Hanson was a suitable reciprocation. :OD
it's quite simple, that is the difference between Brain and Herb. Bryan's strong point is his hands, while Tim's is his feet.Mantia takes something simple and adds on. Alexander has a heavier approach, including dynamics of tribal and dark thrash. both are great. personally, I digg brain's solos more, but tim is even with bryan when it comes to beats.just my opinion...
awesome songs, there is a extended version of Shake Hands with Beef on the Greatest Hits album comin out called, "They Can't all be Zingers!" I can play most of Primus' songs on bass, never close to the original but im gettin there. Do u have a screen name or e-mail address?
I feel quite the opposite actually. I find TIm demonstrates more finesse and adds more subtleties in the drumming, though what Mantia lacks in that department he makes up with pace and raw power. Overrall though, in this track especially I can't help but feel it seems forced, it doesn't find Tim's natural ability to find textured grooves.
That CT bass through that Ampeg...god damn!! We'll never hear this tone again thanks to his horrible sounding signature basses he's been playing lately. They sound so flat and lifeless.
personally i kinda like mantia, but tims good too obviously this song just rocks i dont care if other primus fans out there hate it cuz it's on the brown album... i think it's one of their best
yo man, i know. the only drum instructional video i ever bought was brains'.. he's indeed phenomenal. herb i think would be much better suited to play some type of crooked exotic jazz/world music.. he still put cymbal hits in places that make me go "hmmm, ok!" if you know what i mean.. he probably has a whole lot of potential in some kind of detailed and surprising instrumental music. the question of who is better technical is slightly irrelevant to me. but brain really IS so styled and so raw!
I think the same. I'm not agree with Gilgamex. Maybe for much fans the Brown Album is crap, but I think the opposite. Primus has more repetitive stuff like Glass Sandwich or little song like Pork Soda. This album is more Easy Listening, and reflects the other habilities of Les and Ler. The songs has stables compositions and is more music and less image. A good album to play it backwards when you're studing or something like that, to keep cool without getting bored.
oh yeah man, i got those albums, def awesome shit. I never knew Primus toured with Fishbone and ALL. Les is way better than roger from LTJ lol, also Skankin Pickle's first album, Skafunkrastapunk has a Primus edge to it, includin of the three vocalists.
Power? Tim owned power, although I agree with most of the rest... Have you heard his solos from the "Tour De Fromage" that led into Eleven? Herb the Ginseng drummer is the fucking man! I liked Brain ok but can't even listen to primus anymore without either of them...
Brain and herb improvised and grooved so hard I honestly feel like jay's style is a little too uptight he has such amazing hi hat technique if only he improvised a little more
Brain is an insanely talented drummer. I love all the drummers of Primus equally because they can each do something the others cannot, but this video specifically showcases how amazing and technical Brain’s drumming is. Herb, Brain, and Jay’s styles are all so unique and the songs they play highlight their abilities so well.
Brain's such an underrated drummer, dude is a groove machine.
Dude, listen to the game soundtrack "Interstate '76", it's Brain on drums, and it's mega funky
Bryan Mantia might be the most underrated drummer that ever lived. Genius
Dude, listen to the video game soundtrack "Interstate 76", wtf?? It's Bryan Brain Mantia on drums
the brown album is one of the greatest albums of primus! its really different but really creative! listen to it a couple of more times (stoned) and u'll understand!
I think this might be the best live Primus footage in history.
This song is flawless. The solo, the sound of the bass, the guitar choruses...flawless.
This song grooves so hard! I really do hope one day brain plays with primus again. I just love how it just went into a completely different direction when he joined. Oh and if y'all didn't know already Jay left and Herb is picking it back up.
Would be really cool to see him guest on a couple of songs in a live set, those two albums were so good.
The pulse of the song, which is what u would bob ur head to or stomp your foot too, is a dotted quarter note (3 eighth notes) so its quick lol. its kinda hard to explain with out showing a sheet of music or breaking it down on an instrument for you to hear but ill attempt to continue.
in the entire phrase there are 33 beats, but the pulse, what you feel, is 11. ill try to paint a picture and count the beats with key board symbols lol
| = bar lines to separate bars
8 = eighth note
4* = dotted quarter note (3 8th notes ties together)
4 = quarter note
> = 8th rest (same value just no sound)
4* = 888
4 = 88
this is a bar of 11/8 in 8th notes; | 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 |,
in dotted quarter notes and one regular quarter note; | 4* 4* 4* 4|
heres the pulse written literally - | 4* 4* 4* 4 | 8 4* 4* 4* 8 | 4 4* 4* 4* |
this is what it feels like | 4* 4* 4* 4* 4* 4* 4* 4* 4* 4* 4* |
heres the drum part written literally - | 48 48 48 4 | 8 48 48 8 | 8 8 48 888 888| (i grouped them together to try and make a little more sense but who knows if it worked lol)
when brain does his little fast snare roll thats the end of the phrase (the last 2 beats of the pulse in the phrase) and then it starts over
if this is hard to comprehend (cause it was hard to explain and im not sure if i did a good idea lol) feel free to email me and i can email you the pdf and a midi of the sheet music.
It took me a while to realize how impressive it actually is, it was confusing for me at first because Ler is playing in 4/4 over Brian
Meanwhile Les composing this song: "Lol this weird time thingy sounds pretty cool."
This is the kind of drum solo I like ! Not too complicate, and easy to listen, very groovy
+Dhieen Yeah !! Brain is a sicko
Eh, all of Primus' drummers are unique and incredibly talented. I love them equally.
LifelessSatellite I'd say Brain is my fav. He can pack a mean groove.
I agree, I really enjoy all 3...
Truf
absolutely, and their solos are equally badass this one brian does is great
I love the drum solo in the middle.
3:07 that's how you hit hard
I didn't know Bob Ross could play bass
Isn't that pretty, right there?.. 😍 🖼 😍
I'm going to have to figure out a way to write a top comment to this song that knocks this one off the top. Gotta think about it for sure to make sure it takes. I won't even get any friends or bots to "like it on up" for me.
i wish brain stayed...primus went so amazingly weird when he joined
It is good to hear playing a song almost entirely overhand. This was an underrated album in my mind. I loooveee Lalonde's guitar playing. The perfect melodic counterpoint to Les
wow i remember going to concerts with my parents while growing up :,) my dad loved showing off his 6 year old daughter at concerts lol
The Brown Album
this song is so smooth. not your usual Primus. . i like how les is mostly playing overhand instead of slapping / popping. very cool tune 8)
I think that Herb is the perfect drummer for primus, he gives it a unique sound, the "primus" sound that always characterize it, but as a drummer there's no one like Brain, the way he uses the hi-hats and all the rudiments he applied is just amazing. PS sorry for the mispelled I'm Mexican xD
one of my fav primus tunes
wow this has to be one of my favorite primus performances....
70's Afro Les is my favorite Les so far, all though pith helmet african safari Les is also good one.
I agree with both of you, brown album has some of their best work. The music on that just makes me wanna jump.
and that snare work....muah! nifty
this is the coolest song fryin on acid. never heard this one until i saw them live. it was surprisingly easy to dance too
This song spreads my mind
That yellow-green sparkle DW kit of Brain's is FREAKIN' SWEET!!! I need to buy me some ice-bells, too.
I got your point and you are right, Brain had a lot of groove but as the biggest mexican fan of primus I got to say that Tim Herb Alexander fits perfectly the unique style of Les and Larry.
the drums r crazy! brain is really talented!
great song from Primus, even better live as shown here
Being a guitarist, I would kill to have a bassist like that to play riffs over...that would be a dream.
Yeah, I was on this Tour
Thank you for posting this! Very cool! =)
i love this song
Larry is criminally underrated.
drums are awesome!
No one can replace the "herb man"!!! and i just wanna say that LaLonde is one of the most underrated guitarists of the 90's!!! kinda hard to stand up with les!!!
Amazing drumer
Fuckin jazzy as hell!
Most underrated Primus song. This one and Is It Luck?
é pRIMUS NA KBÇA!!
to esperando eles aki no Brasil! uhuuuuuu
I count to 11 when I play this first counting to six and then five. I've always noticed Brain opens the hi-hat at 5 1/2.
primus baby!
awesome bass tone on this one!
Best version of this song.
one of the best band ever
in that bass off you were talking about, don't forget stanley clarke and sheehan.
Love the perm.
great quality..
Go the fro .. str8 to the faves.
true. on my copy it said kalamazoo as well. i thought they were just messin with my mind o_O
awesome song, has a Police/reggae feel to it, always wonder what Primus would sound like if they went ska for an album. Would be prbly the best ska album ever!
good for u man... u see now?! .. it's a great album!! kinda funky but heavy too, and funny in a strange way!! Primus has to be one of the most creative bands ever!
peace out bro
Never thought 11/8 time could be so damn catchy!
Eleven by Primus played in 11/8 is damn catchy as well. Primus is a one of a kind oddball band with unique odd time grooves.
it depnends on the copy... I think they fixed it cuz my copy reads this as kalamazoo but my buidy baught the album like 2 months later and its listed correctly, but yes you are correct it took me like a month to figure out what rhis song was actually called :P
the brown album is the BEST primus album by far, no doubt...they have grown as musicians and don't try to demonstrate their virtuosity.
aww man thats a badass fro! haha
@drimmie If you think so, search for the one the played in Norway!! :D Ler is a monster on that one!!!
y not indeed!
:OD

oh you got it, man....
@MuzackMusic Totally. Every Primus drummer is great in their own way, but Brain always seemed like the best fit.
Brain is very underrated and fits perfectly with Primus. Personally my favorite is Jay Lane.
weird. i have got the animals dvd when it came out, but on mine the intro is wrong. it says kalamazoo live, but its the duchess clip
awesome songs, there is a extended version of Shake Hands with Beef on the Greatest Hits album comin out called, "They Can't all be Zingers!" I can play most of Primus' songs on bass, never close to the original but im gettin there. Do u have a screen name or e-mail address?

Gilgamex Brian makes beats, Tim makes music.
man brains drum solo is fucking awesome
@andrewt248
i want that bass!
That CT bass through that Ampeg...god damn!! We'll never hear this tone again thanks to his horrible sounding signature basses he's been playing lately. They sound so flat and lifeless.
what about Over the falls?..that was a good one!! :D
Muito bom
Primus Sucksssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Right at 2:00 when they break down for the drum solo, I could have SWORN they were breaking into "Roxanne"
Ahh yes. So agree.
I always struggle with when to come back in after the ‘drum solo’.. At least I know Brain does too 😊
seems like Ler kinda preempted it a lil bit too
@ZippAgain that's actually his son Stephen.
I think if aliens ever come to Earth, I wouldn't be opposed to Primus being our musical representatives for the planet.
personally i kinda like mantia, but tims good too obviously
this song just rocks i dont care if other primus fans out there hate it cuz it's on the brown album... i think it's one of their best
I want that drum kit.
yo man, i know. the only drum instructional video i ever bought was brains'.. he's indeed phenomenal. herb i think would be much better suited to play some type of crooked exotic jazz/world music.. he still put cymbal hits in places that make me go "hmmm, ok!" if you know what i mean.. he probably has a whole lot of potential in some kind of detailed and surprising instrumental music. the question of who is better technical is slightly irrelevant to me. but brain really IS so styled and so raw!
whoa, this is way better than the album version, it almost makes me think the Brown Album was good
Sooo hilarious dude hahaha
one of the only vids i see les's afro
i like his little jig at 4:00. great song. to those who don't like brain i ask, "why?"
Bob Ross Mode activated!
some fan you are. les claypool started this thing where instead of saying primus roxcks you say primus sucks. they mean the same thing
sorry, i meant HERB, cant believe i made the mistake of typing "her" twice. my bad
Mantia, Best Primus dummer
Brown Album's Primus's best.
Duchesssssssssssssssss
TIGHT
brain's solo FTW
he knows when the drummer needs to shine!
whats up with the fro tho?
I think the same. I'm not agree with Gilgamex. Maybe for much fans the Brown Album is crap, but I think the opposite. Primus has more repetitive stuff like Glass Sandwich or little song like Pork Soda.

Ahh yes I love Kalamazoo (like if you get it)
Brain and herb improvised and grooved so hard I honestly feel like jay's style is a little too uptight he has such amazing hi hat technique if only he improvised a little more
2.00 is INTENSE DRUMMING!!!
Brain makes it swing
