He may not be a spotlight grabber, but he has a unique approach to texture and rhythm playing. He compliments the driving, chunky bass parts by keeping a stream of decorative, melodic sound flowing in, out and around the chords and crunch that carry the song as a whole. Perfectly complimentary, they have a formula all their own.

I'll give you his voice but his bass tone is hugely different. Old school Les had a more natural beefy tone whilst modern Les is far more electronic. It's been one of the biggest criticisms he has faced and has validity to it. It's insane you think differently when objectively his tone has changed. For the record I enjoy both old and new Primus. When I first heard this song, it was my 16th birthday, the 3rd day of school, back from summer break, my senior year 1990, and I was tripping my balls off. My best friend had just come back from San Francisco to check out the San Francisco Art Institute where he'd be going to college. He brought back some LSD and the just released Primus album Frizzle Fry for my birthday present. We ditched classes almost all day just so we could go listen to this album, especially this song in his car over and over and over and over and... Also listened to the new Jane's Addiction Ritual de lo Habitual in another great friend's car (sadly she passed on soon after high school 😥) and never was the same again!!! No one really knew what this band looked like unless you were a die hard fan from the Bay Area, but in San Diego, they were unheard of, and like I mentioned, unseen. I pictured this little woodland creature band playing on wooden style instruments with an elderly Elvish dude on vocals. No idea the singer was also the bassist, which was a rarity back then. Next few days I scoured every record store around (The Wherehouse, Tower Records) I could to find their only other release, their live effort Suck On This! And got to hear where they got the intro to this song from. Rush's YYZ

Now every time I listen to anything from Frizzle Fry I get slightly anxious and nauseous. Weird.

I always thought that this song kinda describes the whole band, it was the first song on their first album (not counting Suck on this) and it's called To defy the laws of tradition. Traditionally the guitar is the lead instrument and the bass is a rhythmic instrument, but because Primus defies tradition the bass is the lead while the guitar is the rhythm, idk if that was their intention or not but if it was it's pretty cool, or maybe i'm just overthinking this.
