At least there's some visual differentiation between Oasis' hit years (94-99), and Oasis' shit years (00-09), I'm glad Microdot defined the look of the bands stuff for the former.
Not just your point (though I thoroughly agree) but it all changed when Bonehead and Guigsy left. I was so gutted when Blur 🤮 beat Roll with it to number 1! I think the only ( and there were many) single that beat this was whatever in terms of B- Sides but the album sleeve to Roll with it was bloody marvellous as was all Brian’s work. What a time! ❤️❤️❤️🎸🎸🎸🎸🌞
Noel wanted himself, brilliant. I absolutely love these videos, true creativity. As a teenager I used to stare at these sleeves and drift away into oblivion with my headphones on. Thank you
I caught that too, ha Noel! When he said it, i instantly thought probably from cigarettes and alcohol, looked at the screen and there it was, I knew it! Love Noel, love these videos! ♡♡
Noel was my neighbour back in 1994/1995 he lived in a basement flat on Albert street.. I found those shades he's wearing on this cover at the market and put him on to them after we met in the Delhi on Delancy Street one Saturday morning. He was well chuffed with them. Happy days!
The crazy thing is, every time I watch the Cigarettes and Alcohol video, I always think "Noel likes himself in those shades". Now I feel I was right!! Love Noel ❤ 😎
This is awesome. My best mate (we were 17 at the time and from Weston) walked past on the promenade and told me about it that night. I didn’t believe him, until the album came out. Great recount, thank you.
I used to gaze at this cover and whatever’s cover more than any of the other ones. Love the summer colours and how the band looked. Thank you for this video!
Fascinating stuff from a golden time - but one request is to hear about how you used to create the washes of colour etc as this is such an essential part of the sleeve x
That wasn't done in post production - it was in the processing of the film, it was 'cross processed' that is to say, negative film was sent through the chemicals used for transparencies - this then distorted the colours.
Thanks. I was going to ask the same thing. I also hoped you’d mention on Some Might Say that it was a black and white photo that was hand coloured. Again an essential point in a great cover. I love hearing these tales.
Absolutely fantastic this video is. I live 40 mins away from Weston beach, been to Weston more times than I can remember. I took the roll with it cd with me and created a then and now shot going back in lock down. It was funny you should say about the weather, when I went there it was also hot and not a cloud in the sky when I took the picture. What I didn't know( now I do) is that you all stayed in the big hotel across from the beach how amazing is that. You learn something new everyday. The Beatles stayed in one of the hotels near the old berbeck pier unfortunately the hotel burned down many many many yrs ago. Love this channel
Fascinating stuff! This is my favourite artwork from Oasis’ singles. Whenever I drive along the Weston Seafront I always give a nod to Oasis and The Beatles. Btw, the picture you showed of Weston Pier was of the new pier. The old grand pier, featured in the background of the Oasis shot, burnt down in 2008. The picture you showed of the Beatles on the beach was taken at Brean beach, but they also did a shoot on Weston beach where they rode on donkeys. 👍🏻
Really enjoying this series of videos on the artwork for Oasis. I had all the CDs including the two cigarette packet cases so this brings back such fond memories. Would be keen to hear about the Be Here Now Cover, considering the detail on the image it looks like it will have an interesting backstory! Thanks Brian.
Great video, Brian. Thank you. For your interest the pier that is behind the band burned down in the late noughties. The one that you show in the modern pictures was finished in 2010. I remember when it burnt down - I come from Somerset I’ve lived here all my life apart from a brief spell at Manchester University! - and was gutted to see a piece of Oasis history be lost like that. Keep up the good work and take care.
The great thing was with the cd single cover was it always stood out in cd rack because of the colours, so always really easy to find, that makes me feel old writing that.
All done pre digital age - old school. The physical preparation and hard work put into your projects have allowed them to stand the test of time! I wonder if the same results would have been achieved with the convenience of doing it all on a computer.
@@GT380man 'stone age art"???? are you 10 years old?? I suppose you'd call The Beatles stone age artists that recorded on 'stone age equipment' that is highly sort after these days as well as their 'stone age' recording techniques and style that have been repeatedly copied for decades. Despite this 'stone age' style they are still the most influential band in the world. But if you personally prefer to use photoshop or Garageband when recording music because you can't draw or play an instrument then you are actually the unsophisticated primate living in the stone age. Not Microdot.
Awesome. I remember when it came out and as a Weston resident, a lot of people dined out on it for a while. Not sure where I was, probably still studying in Manchester. I heard rumours that they spent a little time at the local and now defunct club Hobbits. Anyway, it's great to get a little insight into how these things come about.
This is great Brian...love all your work and your recollections of the shoots...met you at a bunnymen gig years ago here in lpool and I think I told you my favourite cover was the new fast automatic daffodils one you did
I only ever seen those type of proofs in a repo house in Birmingham called James Uptons back in 1993 when I did work experience @Rover group in the promotions dept.Christ takes me back man...Great video n love the sleeve now as I did then.
Good to see/hear the rest of this story, I was lucky enough to get a couple of bits of this from you when I visited in July, was good to meet you. Keep the videos coming man, nice one.
Fuckin brilliant! Love hearing these tales! As a fan back the the cover if roll with it certainly meant something, especially Liams telly with the great Alex Higgins on it but hearing now at 47 how this was all put together is amazing! Love your videos mate thanks for doing this greatly appreciated 👍!
Great video! Thanks. you don't ramble, you're concise and interesting. Appreciate it! I first got into the band around this single. I was 11. Did my homework, skipping back between As and Bs. Heroes!
As a 10 year old me and my friends mimed roll with it as a tribute oasis band in front of the whole school in 1996... I was liam and drew a beard on my face.. Oasis were my life even at that early age. They were huge and reached all ages.
Another great video, Brian. It's amazing learning about all the details that went into this shoot. I love all the choices each band member picked for what they were going to watch on the telly. Liam's choice is so telling about himself as well as Noel's. lol. My favorite detail, though, is that the shoot was actually done on June 22nd which is my birthday. Love it! Did you get any pictures of the band eating their ice creams? I would love to see that. I hope to make it to Microdot one day. Do you let fans try on Liam's duffel coat? Does it still smell like Liam after all these years? 🥰🥰🥰
Hey Brian. Great video! Looking at the outtake shots it looks like the final sleeve was given an orange coloured wash in post production. Could you give us some information on why you did this? Just wondered it it was to give it even more of a 'Beatles for sale' vibe?
That wasn't done in post production - it was in the processing of the film, it was 'cross processed' that is to say, negative film was sent through the chemicals used for transparencies - this then distorted the colours.
Thanks for another great video. They add so much to the collective history of Oasis. But would you please consider making a coffee table book with your stories 😅
I went to the gig at Bath Pavillion on the day of this shoot (aged 14). First time they played Morning Glory, Roll With It and Hello live. It was a secret gig and I still feel incredibly thankful to the friend who tipped me off about it. Still got the ticket.
Bloody hell Brian, that intro music nearly blew my ears off! 😅 Really enjoyed the video, feels like yesterday when I bought the single in 95, always wondered why they had Alex Higgins and the rest on there. Great cover, and to echo what a lot of people have said already on here, your logo was(is) way better than the Oasis phase 2 logo.👍
Great video, enjoying all of them. Just curious, where members of the public are visible (like presumably on the back cover?) Do you need their permission to be included? Or if it is in a public place like a beach is it not required?
Superb video Brian as always. I'd never spotted that water bottle either! I think the warmth of the orange sand and sky is the memorable part of this sleeve, in 95 were you using Photoshop or was it done with a more formative DTP bit of kit? (I'll buy that printer's proof if you ever come to sell :) As a side note, the set they played at Glastonbury was off-the-scale but had heard the MG songs yet so the crowd were a little flat and the gig never gets the credit it deserves. When you watch it back now, the sheer force of the transition from It's Good To Be Free into the opening drums of Morning Glory and the absolute treat it must have been to hear DLBIA for the first time is spellbinding.
The colour was a result of 'cross processing' that is to say sending the negative film through chemicals used to develop transparencies - that distorted the colours to the effect you see. So nothing digital - a totally analogue process!
You should do some concept designs for liams new sleeves for a bit of fun. I'd love to see what you would do with diamond in the dark or everything's electric
Back then, as you know, you’d sell a load of singles before the album ever dropped so you’d be taking one of the most popular pictures of the year possibly. The effort seems justified. Imagine how many people saw the wonderwall photo that year.
How oasis changed direction from microdot still baffles me. What a mistake that was. The logo is poor and all the sleeves. Microdot smashed it 🤜🏼🤛🏼
At least there's some visual differentiation between Oasis' hit years (94-99), and Oasis' shit years (00-09), I'm glad Microdot defined the look of the bands stuff for the former.
After Microdot, artwork was very poor indeed...
I really can't stand the font they used from Standing on the Shoulder

This brings back so many memories.i miss the 90s so much ! Great video mate 👍
I love all the stories and the actual process of creating the sleeves, I hope to see a video on the verve sleeves.
