In this, the first episode from the new Microdot UA-cam channel, Brian Cannon, Microdot Creative Director - creator of all Oasis record sleeve artwork in the 90s and designer of the iconic Oasis logo - details the history of the logo, from its beginnings in the Boardwalk rehearsal rooms when Oasis were a completely unknown unsigned band to the iconic classic we all know and love today.
I would pay good money for a Microdot design book. One with the stories behind the design, like Michael Bierut's book.
Absolutely a great shout for a microdot book
No you wouldn’t
Being an oasis fan from 1994 one of the things I remember from those days was the excitement of buying the singles and albulms the covers and oasis logo was so iconic .. some fascinating insights here thanks Brian
absolutely
Same with me boss .....great memories
'Typographical Hero' - Not phrase you hear everyday.
This was fantastic. Your presentation style was well paced and felt like you were sat across from us at a table just having a chat. Depth of field on the camera shot was really tasteful too. I'd love to hear you talk about other bands' logos (even ones you didn't design) in a similar fashion.
As a graphic designer and an Oasis fan, I enjoyed this very much. Would love to see more of your work.
That logo does something to my brain whenever I look at it. So many great memories.
Classic logo, the later artwork after 2000 didn't look right at all without it. I remember going into buy Standing on the Shoulder of Giants and not knowing the album sleeve I couldn't find it for ages because the logo was so faint on the cover.
Brian Cannon and Microdot, two legendary names I grew up admiring and being inspired by. Great to hear your insights, please do more.
All these years later and we are getting answers to all the questions we thought we'd never get answered. Just amazing to hear
That original is a priceless piece of Oasis history. Please keep these videos coming.
So glad you finally went on and did this. Remember, sir, YOU are also a large part of OASIS history. Very excited to learn more about the stories behind different sleeves and whatnot. Much love from Canada!
James Hargreaves brought me here. Thanks for living the life I could only dream of. I was 14 when Definitely Maybe came out, and I swear I was the only person in my group of friends that knew Oasis. I only knew them from 120 Minutes on MTV (UK but broadcast satellite in the US); when I saw them play "Supersonic" I thought for sure they would go big in the states. Then Wonderwall happened and life has gone on with Oasis in my heart. Every song on Definitely Maybe conjures a certain memory; my first kiss, blasting Columbia so loud it blew my mom's car speakers. I stole her car occasionally back then and DM was disc 4 in the CD changer. Turned my mom on to Oasis : )
Who’s the 7 people who gave this a thumbs down? This is gold

This was fascinating! Being Oasis mad in secondary school my friends and I would mock up our own versions of the logo in Helvetica Black Italic for stickers/wall posters etc.
at first, I thought, how does he gonna talk about a single logo for 19 minutes? surely some old footage of the band, fancy transition and whatnot will be tucked in to squeeze duration. oh how happy am I for being wrong.
very concise and informative. straight from the man himself. salute.
please do more. thank you.
This just popped up on my feed, what a great watch, grew up with the band and the artwork is totally classic and went hand in hand with the tunes, cheers!
Agreed .
I found two of my Oasis CDs a few days ago and played them in the car. I always liked that they had their logo on their CDs
This is priceless. That logo means so much. It is my youth. Here I am, 42 years old.
I moved on from Graphic Design about 10 years ago but boy this brings memories of the late 90s and why I was so in love with design back then.
My teenage years. Right here. Thank you, Brian.
The black and white logo is the best ever IMO.
npc
Love the hot rock burn in the oasis tshirt , very of it’s time
Little did I know, it's the same Brian Cannon that photographed plenty of NS venues I attended...head well and truly blown 🤯
Why are oasis stories always so brilliant!?
I had the white swirl t-shirt. Bought in 1994 after seeing oasis at Glastonbury and then Newcastle Riverside gig. Wish I had a picture of me in it from then. Bought a few 5ft x 3ft subway oasis posters for the house. Great channel Brian 👏
Best debute UA-cam video I’ve ever seen
Well worth the 10 year wait! Thank you Brian!
Quality history Brian Cannon. Great stories for all OASIS fans
It’s crazy how much they nailed Helvetica. I come back to it time and time again in my designs and use it as a benchmark by which to gauge other fonts. I think I always will. Never gets out of date or dull, pure class.
Fantastic history of the Oasis brand!
Back in the day I made a oasis logo from white sticky vinyl plastic and put it in my bedroom window. I had to do it in reverse so from the outside it was the right way round! Happy memories.
Thank you Brian for sharing your memories! I remember buying my Definitely Maybe CD in a mall music store with my mom in 1994 after hearing Oasis on the radio a few times. It was my very first CD and the first I played in a brand new portable CD player that I had just bought. I have always loved the logo and it now adorns the roof rack of my car. Looking forward to hearing more war stories! All the best! Chris - Greensboro, North Carolina USA
To a lifelong Oasis fan like me this is fascinating stuff. I was 15 in 1994 and Oasis became and still are my life. I already knew bits and bobs about the logos etc but this went in-depth and I love that! More please!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Loved this - suggestions for a the next one: the making of the cover of Verve's debut single in Mesnes Park!
Thank you for this video. As a designer and especially as a fan of oasis, I was delighted to see this.
It would be great to have an episode on each of the sleeves and what went behind it 👌
Oasis and Josef Müller-Brockmann in the same video 👌🏻
Dear Brian, thank you, I received my Lucky Man print & WTSMG Vinyl (signed) ! Amazing, ordered on a Sunday & delivered from the U.K. to Sydney in only 5 days, Quality, well packaged & protected, all in Mint Condition. The Print's now framed & on my wall, whilst the Albums been spinning non stop on my Turn-table. You're a true Gentleman !
Thank you Brian for sharing this stories with the Oasis fans, it's amazing to see how the iconic logo came to be.
As a graphic designer and a massive Oasis fan this was a real treat
This is fantastic. I hope more record cover designers take a cue from this.
This is absolute gold. You are a living legend Brian.
She’s a Superstar cover would be cool to hear about. I bought a poster print of it from you years ago that hangs in my living room, knowing the full story of how that image was created would be very interesting to hear.
Microdot did some fantastic early sleeves for the Verve too
Really great video. As a fellow graphic designer I can totally relate to the 'not having that font' scenario. I love the original logo and wish they'd kept it in the 2000s.
SOOOO good, Brian! Thanks for sharing this history. In '94, my 12 year old self drew this logo on so many school books that I memorized every curve, every angle, every detail. It opened my eyes to design and I subsequently made graphic design my career. You'll always be an inspiration. Cheers for that!
I always called it a design scheme but to call it corporate branding makes sense too!
Epic video, outstanding in fact. Growing up loving the band, the logo, the sleeves, the music. I worshipped the whole band, now it is clear that the whole team behind the scenes were on the same page the whole time. It worked, and it was magical. "Stand by me, nobody knows the way it's gonna be" - Noel Gallagher (1997).
I studied Graphic Design from 91 to 94 at Nottingham Trent and remember seeing an Apple computer with Photoshop and Quark on it for the first time!
What a fantastic video... incorporating an iconic band with design and history. Loved hearing about the thought process and the internal struggle for perfection.
Great stuff!
Great stuff Bri! Keep em coming
Radio X brought me here . Chris Moyles. Great interview.
Big YES to more videos about all the artwork, I have always been really interested about it.
I couldn’t understand why the logo had to be skewed as they didn’t have the same font
Thanks for this video Brian, I love it. I never realised the font for the Union Jack logo is not the same than the final logo.
I never really got the redesigned logos - this one was sooo iconic. Keep it simple! thx.
Loved this! Can’t wait for the next video
