Well, we're trying something completely different on the farm, winter canola. We've never grown canola before so it's exciting and scary at the same time. The seed is super small and has to be planted at a certain depth, so we had to call the reinforcements. My friend Stefan came over with his Vaderstad biodrill to help us out. The video covers tillage, rolling and seeding the winter canola. The hybrid we're growing is the only one registered to grow and is called Mercedes. The seed came from Germany and imported by C&M Seed here in Ontario. Fingers crossed it works out and survives the winter.

Your drone footage is amazing.
Canola is a really good crop to do a rotation program, even though it needs a lot of fertilizer it gives the soil a big amount of organic matter, and its roots are supposed to reduce compaction
Interesting! Now I don´t realy know what kind of winters you have but here in the south of sweden wintercanola or "oil rape seed" as we say in europe is a very common crop. Best of luck!!

I love your and Sandi’s videos. I helped hay our pastures growing up but my only other experience with farming is an interesting story. Uncle Roy leased 80 acres and planted milo. Had beautiful full heads ready to harvest. Had a severe storm lay it all on the ground. Him and Daddy decided the only way to save it was give all us kids,cousins and all, toe sacks and head knives. We cut it all by hand. Then when dry ground the heads with a mineral mix and fed cows with it. Yes, we were not wealthy. Lol

Looking forward to the results with the Carrier and bio-drill combination. There was some seeded with a Rapid from Vaderstad south of Hamilton.
We did about 15 acres of canola this year as well was also first time for us we’re about an hour and a half or so south of you will be interesting to see how it all turns out especially considering we planted it with our 750 no till John Deere drill

Regarding harvest, to make sure you will be able to do it early enough, do you plan to use a windrower to be then able to plant your second crop of soybeans?

on our farm in Lithuania we also grow Mercedes winter canola for last 6 years, its one of the best yielding hybrids and very popular, keep us updated on your try grow winter canola.

the science is less surface area exposed to the wind. a whole lot less surface area. i never considered that so it's good to know.
does the rold ground help with ground erosion from hard rain storms ,i do 100% no-tile will it work on corn stalks planted to beans
Canola is major crop in Western Canada, its seeded with air seeders. We just plant it canola into stubble, no seed bed prep. Maybe roll the field after the crop is planted. Why did you do all the work? Same country, such different farming practices. For years farmers planted 5lbs per acre, now corn planters are being used. Putting a rate of around 2lbs an acre & getting the same result. Image since you grow corn, likely have a corn planter?
Here in Australia we direct drill canola straight then don’t touch it again until we weed free it

Yes, I believe we can install a similar style seeder on the Joker. We want to see how this works out before we make the investment.
I was not aware of winter canola, interesting. 1. What is the price range/size of a bag of seed. 2. When does frost star in your area? We had frost this am in western NB.
try some KWS hybrid rye, 60kg/ha and yields 9tons, plus it will handle -30c ez pz

Here i Denmark, September 10 is to late to plant canola, if you want to be sure the plant is strong enough to survive winter. Here it is no later than August 25...
If I were to doing it again next year (2020) I would plant a week sooner.

Wow. Just direct seed and save your iron and fuel. Been growing Canola since 70’s. Once it’s going it’s tough like a weed
Our issue with establishing canola in Ontario is wheat stubble. In the late summer/early fall slugs can eat seedling canola quicker than it can grow so we have to work the ground.

How do you seed your alfalfa and hayseeds? Or maybe you don't have a small seed box at all?
No small seed box, and no fine metering rolls on our air seeder. For hay seed, we have a guy broadcast it with an air boom and then roll after.

If your'e going to use the straw for bedding why would you want to separate the chaff from the straw as the chaff is the most absorbent part of the bedding?
Some bales are too good at getting the chaff and it remains in the field in a narrow strip. Once it gets wet, it never dries out and the soil is tough to work with. Also, it really impacts the grow of the cover crop. We find it's easier to spread it, although some does make it into the bales.
I m in Alberta, almost everyone got Canola here.
I even mix it with fertilizer and spread it on with the pullspreader, then harrow 2-3 times. Sometimes even 3 days later then the ground dries and pulverized more.
More guy are seeding Canola with the corn planter with different seeddiscs.

Btw, is it roundup Canola you seeded?
He said the population ist from Germany and called Mercedes. That's non GMO.
Interesting, and the canola is conventional non-roundup ready.
When you roll you decrease the surface-area of the soil which reduces evaporation.

It will be crushed for oil. Likely at ADM Windsor.
We have a few crush plants in a 70 mile radius we haul Sunflowers to Cargill and ADM both are slow dumping and have long lines....we always pack a lunch!!!
did you find a elevator to take it in your area?
ADM in Windsor will, just have to contact them directly.
Do you need to do anything special for harvest than what you already have?
Hoping our existing harvest equipment will do the job.

Careful with the field tiles. Had a farm near clinton grow canola over a few years, slowly scaled up i believe. Then they had a year that the roots found their way into the field tile. Was told they had a couple hundred acres that had to have most of the field tile checked/clear because the roots plugged it. Can't say for sure if it was winter canola, but probably. Just a little heads up

Was gonna say you might wanna put it on untiled ground if you start growing it alot. One crop you could try if you like experimenting is the seasoning Kummin, I'm not sure if it is called that in English but if we manage to grow it up here in finland you should have no problem over there. The combine does smell like a Asian restaurant when you tresh it tho
