If time and circumstances allow you need to visit the Tamiya Factory in Shizuoka, Japan. I have been a fan of all things Tamiya since the eighties from Radio Control buggies to the model aircraft. My dream came true in July of 2012. My dear, patient partner and I took the bullet train from Kyoto and it was just amazing! the archive room with kits going back as far as the 50's and the showroom where they kept the cars they bought to use as reference material for the kits. It was really inspiring to see what could be accomplished at the expert level. There seems to be a different spirit of excellence in Japanese scale model culture. The way you have talked about the Corsair and the Mosquito with such awe you really should consider visiting there. You would love it. James Hanscombe Sydney Australia.
Absolutely love the style of your videos. Really stand out as a favourite to me of all the scale modelling channels. Really hope you keep uploading! Cheers, Alex
Great tour, Gary! Love the way you intersperse detail photos throughout your video to illustrate the points you are making about the detail. Very informative. Can't wait to see what you make of this beautiful kit! Have a Happy New Year! Brian C
Merry Christmas Gary! That does look a lovely box indeed. I had a similar shaped one under the tree; turned out to be a toasted sandwich maker!!! Oh well, better carry on losing photo etch for the hellcats cockpit! Happy new year
WOW, spacemanvw must have been having a bad day when he watched your review on this kit. Anyway, I really liked this review of Tamiya's Corsair. The detail is exceptional since I already saw your final build, you obviously did it justice! i just found your channel today and have eagerly subscribed. Thanks again!
Hello again Gary.Sorry I didn't mention the Tamiya kit my kids were rampaging in the house and I skipped the inbox review some how. That kit is up there with the GWH F15BD kit.The detail is Fanstastic mate.Nice touch with the goggles, revits on the canapie. Lots of extras too.Dare I ask how much that set you back sir.
Have to admit after watching this, Tamiya's Corsair looks very interesting to build. However I'm always held back from building US Navy aircraft like the F4F (Wildcat), F6F (Hellcat) and the F4U Corsair as I built Airfix's old Corsair kit and never enjoyed it as it came out terrible - plus I was only about 10 - 12 years old at the time, but again a very nice kit Gary - love to see it finished!
Gary,For a kit of this size you should be able to move the wings to what ever position you desire. Monogram /Revell has been doing that since the 60's. Excellent detail on the R-2800, decent on the interior of the fuselage{could be better} exterior excellent! P.E. might be better to the lay-men, but not with your talent. Cockpit detail fantastic! Mid-wing end sections look beautiful! Cowling, I'm running out of superlatives! Kit of the year, you think? 1/32nd and larger, Must have rubber tyres! HHMMM, P.E. not painted? That's a little dated, they should be painted. Does not take away from the kit though. NO STENCILING! Yes, they do not put out the proper green chromate. Excellent review Gary, can't wait too see the end result. Good luck! Happy New Year! - Bob
Once again Tamiya shows that art can exist in the form of Polystyrene. I have been wanting one of these since they come out only waiting for Tokyo Hobby to offer it at a reasonable price. On the dry transfers you might be referring to Archer Dry Transfers? Superb kit and superb review thank you Gary.
Great review gary, another great kit from Tamiya. On the subject of the National Insignia Decals, I think you should make your own Masks. I had a bash on the 1/24 Typhoon and was really happy with the result, plus its another skill you'll have under your belt.
The manufacturer surely went to great lengths on these kits, justifying the hefty asking price. I have built the old Revell and Monogram Corsair kits in all the scales available at the time including 1/32. While the large Revell kit was pretty good, this Tamiya kit looks beyond AWESOME!!! Unfortunately, bringing the very best out of this kit requires a very steady hand which I no longer have!
Dallas Cheked These days- providing tou take price out of the equation - Tamiya are producing the finest kits in the world, be that for accuracy of subject or quality of tooling. As a result of the latter, even with their high part count, it actually makes them easier to construct and although there are some quite small parts, I would say that the mallest part is no more intricate than, say a tail wheel on a 1/72 kit. The engineering that has gone into this kit also means that fit is perfect and sans ambiguity, so, in fact, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this kit to even a beginner! :) Cheers, Dallas!
Yikes.. on all accounts!! :) I got a Tamiya kit by courier delivery about an hour ago, but it wasn't this one.. it was (surprise, surprise) the 1/48 Tamiya P-47 D 'Razorback'.. Needed a Razorback to go with the two 1/48 Bubbletops I got from you and my son last Christmas and beyond, so I decided to spend some Christmas money!! :) Now, back to your review, that kit is a beauty, if a tad large for my personal taste... :) But like somebody said, that is pure art.. the detail is incredible!! Thanks for the insight into the other side of modelling, the side I'm not very likely to ever enter.. the side of the glorious large scale kits!! :)
Hi Gary,That looks like a sterling kit mate.I have the older Tamiya Cousair kit 1.48.I have just had a port and its gone straight to my head lol.Not used to drinking at 13.00 in the Afternoon :).Happy new year to you and you wife. Do you have any kids Gary?
Dear Sir. May I ask what is the item, of which there appear to be many, that you are pouring into your mouth from the glass / plastic jar in your avatar. P.S. Keep up the fantastic work, I have not touched a plastic kit for 49 years and now I am tempted !
Hi Gary I never met you sure would love to to share beers and scotch. BUT I owe you a thank you. My wife was 'fishing around'" to find a Father's Day gift for me, and had my daughter try to pry some "ideas". Well I had seen your review on the Corsair an aircraft I really like!! And I let her know I would Like a "TAMIYA" 1/32 kit of that model. Well my daughter let it slip that I am getting a special gift that I will like!! No ties!! I'll let you know June 21st. !! Do you have a Father's Day date in Scotland?
Frederick Meccia Well, Frederick, happy early birthday and I really hope your family fulfil your wishes! You will not be disappointed! We do have a Father's Day here, too and unlike Mother's Day, I believe it's the same date as yours. I should know this, as my wife is from Maine and my Father-In-Law is in RI!

You are a great modeler. Thank you for the videos!
Thank you, Hans, I really appreciate that. :)
Great review and nice beer recommendations
Absolutely gorgeous kit - but still no excuse for letting your beer go flat. Mind your priorities, man!
Great review gary, another great kit from Tamiya. On the subject of the National Insignia Decals, I think you should make your own Masks. I had a bash on the 1/24 Typhoon and was really happy with the result, plus its another skill you'll have under your belt.
Lovely kit. I'd just copy the stars on some cardstock and use them as templates as they seem big enough to manage fairly easily. Have fun.
The manufacturer surely went to great lengths on these kits, justifying the hefty asking price. I have built the old Revell and Monogram Corsair kits in all the scales available at the time including 1/32.

With big decals, could you not photo copy and make your own stencils?
Robert Lonsdale that's not a bad idea and I suppose it would work with any scale with simple decals. :)
