The best thing about “Off the Cuff” is the people interviewed are actually busy and not just people in suits trying to sound intelligent and interesting. The biggest difference is how guests on Off the Cuff are so precise about the data they have and don’t just throw speculative statements without data backing it. So much to learn from the guests here.

Please stop sucking to English as a means of communication.
Yes it is important, but in India a VAST MAJORITY of the people are more comfortable speaking in their own language rather than English.....accept that as a fact and work and communicate with these people accordingly.
"Refined" English is something that brainwashed people with western mindset use as their trump card to walk all over and silence locals who are not conversant in English.
      Enough of this bs.
Whatever was Mr Sodhi's "level" of English, it was more than enough to very clearly put across his points in a clear understandable manner.
Only South Bombay "types" would find an issue with his English.
Absolutely enjoyed this episode and more importantly SG didn't interrupt Mr Sodhi at all once he had asked his question.

What needs to be done is actually going deep into the matter understand all sides of the story and then comment about it. People love or hate on things because it is done by a certain party. Excellent interview. Kudos. Thanks to Print for this interview with AMUL MD Dr Sodhi. Farmers historically since Independence have not been getting their due share. Disparity between rural and urban India is 1:5. Farm laws are good for farmers. Unfortunately Govt is unable to communicate properly the benefits to farmers. Economy has to run on demand, supply forces. India is self sufficient in food except in edible oils and pulses. It is therefore crucial to diversify crops. MSP is good and can be used for production of edible oilseeds and pulses effectively instead of rice and wheat and sugarcane. With 6 0% of India's water being used for these crops, rice, wheat, sugarcane, how farmers will benefit? Urban consumers want cheap food, implies farmers producing food, their incomes will not increase. India''s GDP should increase by 7% but not farmers' incomes ! Why do they want cheap food, because they want industrial wages to be low. If food prices increase, industrial wages will have to increase. Therefore we are subsidizing Indian industry at the cost of food prices. Therefore we need to encourage farmers to produce crops with remunerative prices. Make the farmers invest where growth rate is higher such as livestock, milk, where growth is 14 percent, while farmers are still in crops where growth is 3% or lower. Livestock implies protein and fat. Invest more in livestock, pulses, oilseeds, horticulture. We need to make Punjab farmers do this. In any State budget, spending on Animal husbandry is hardly 7%, since conventionally fertilizer subsidy, power subsidy take up the share, while animal husbandry gets a raw deal. Dairy is a livelihood for 100 ml rural families in India. The GoI is encouraging local production with its import duties upto 35% and should continue this support. No country has been able to survive their agriculture without protection. EU is giving subsidy in the name of 'storage incentive scheme'. Canada is importing import duty upto 200%. Most countries are imposing import duties on Milk. Methane emission or env quality comes only after livelihood needs are met. Ultimately demand supply forces will rule the market. Farmers preferring buffalow to cows. Earlier 80% buffalow milk and 20% cows milk. Currently buffalow milk is 60%, cows milk is 40%. Buffalow milk is more nutritious than cows milk, more calcium, more sweeter, more SNF. Also price of buffalow milk is 50% higher than cows milk. Sale of buffalow milk is increasing 3 to 5 percent higher than cows milk. Media is also doing business based on TRP, reflecting mandi problems. Empowering farmers is important and Govt has realized it. A2 milk started from New Zealand. A1, A2 are basically two types of protein. There is no scientific evidence to say whether A1, or A2 milk is better. Largely in India we are getting A2 milk, because all Buffalow milk is A2 milk. Indian low cow milk is also A2 milk. Except cross bred cows milk in India, entire milk is A2 milk. Therefore in India 90% of milk is A2 milk. There is neither health nor nutrition benefit due to the difference between A1, A2.

“Industry will exploit farmers”. Completely agreed agriculture reforms are needed. But, farmers fear exploitation and gov’t really isn’t being able to explain the benefits for farmers and the trust deficit is so high that gov’t should implement MSP as mentioned in the interview as well. But, MSP should be for multiple crops and by MSP I think he means even if private players buy the crops farmers should not suffer because of that. Agricultural reforms are needed, but gov’t needs to find a win-win situation with farmers.

As an agri student when we did village stay in our course in odisha , the main headache of every farmer was market n corruption in mandis .
And as much we read Punjab water table is lowest bcoz of cultivating water intensive rice. They need to shift to other crops. They fertilizer req is 4times higher than Odisha .
We need export oriented production, quality n grading should be focused too.
Our highest import are oil , when we have climate to grow this but all of India needs to produce rice n wheat.
If even u visit FCI , u ll see how much is waste n low quality unexportable rice govt is collecting.
Most funny part of my village training was some don't want advance tech , they ll just throw utea bcoz it makes field look greener n never follow soil test reports. People have a mindset of not to change.

If you agree with Amul learn about its history as well. It is a co-operative organization whose idea was suggested by Sardar Patel to fight the privatization and monopoly over milk by the company called Polson. Farmers protested against Polson having power over milk prices and not paying enough to them. When farmers went to Sarda Patel, he suggested them to stop selling milk to Polson and to start their own co-operative firm. Thus Amul was born.
It is sad to see people praising Amul but going against farmer protest.

If you listen carefully, and objectively, the interview has several contradictions. On the one hand,it says that reforms are good. But starting from 3.40 Mr.R.S Sodhi says that once industry steps in,they are going to exploit farmers. This is the same apprehension that the farmers have.
Also the Amul model is basically a cooperative model, and not a corporate model....corporates are nowhere in the picture in the Amul model ,unlike in the farm laws, where it is a corporate model that is being envisaged,if not overtly,at least covertly to replace the mandis...to give one example ...the changes in the Essential Commodities Act,allowing storage facilities, which only a corporate with deep pockets can afford, and not the unorganised farm sector. .
Also, applying the Amul model to the farm laws is like comparing chalk to cheese...
There are many more contradictions like the USA heavily subsidising its farmers...MSP is also a subsidy that farmers are demanding,in cases where the market price does not match the cost of production.

What could be the reason behind increase in urban income as compared to rural income? It is lack of adaptability to change. Why Amul is flourishing? It is their vision. They foresee the market trends, bring value added products, market it in professional manner. Over the years they are ruling milk products market. Why similar things can't be experimented with other agri products? It is because of vested interests. Ambani Adani's names have become like a 'gali'. It is because people say what they are being told to say. There is one diversified company having leadership status in cigarettes, hotel, paper and packaging business with solid footprint in agri business. There presence in agri business for over 25 years suggest the that apprehension of losing land to corporates in corporate farming is absolutely unfounded.

Do you mean to say Amul is exploiting farmers? MSP will ofcourse governed by demand-supply proposition.
If the farming process hasn't seen any significant or innovative changes for ages and if the quality of agri produce has seen any significant rise; why should I pay more when quality is not guaranteed to me. Why these foreign funded kisan unions not doing their own research or invest those cannadda dollars on modern farming education, tools.techniques instead of free langars, massage parlours, pizza centres etc. If these unions have might to challenge democratically elected Govt.and eventually the Democracy why they always look at Govt.with begging bowls.
If Govt. will decide farming patterns depending on weather pattern, soil conditions, and demand-supply pattern you are not going to accept that; if Govt brings in reforms to dissuade traditional farming patterns harming soil conditions, water tables etc.you're not going to accept that; then only way you'll go is die your own death earlier than you expect.

This whole debate around farm laws is superficial and doesn't address the core problem which is inefficient farming due to small holdings, absence of mechanization and technology and heavily indebted farmer families. The only reform in this sector will be to consolidate lands thru cooperative farming or corporate farming where the farmers retain ownership of lands, earn income from lease of farms and by working on farms or downstream cold storages or processing units set up by cooperatives or corporates. Higher yields per hectare, value addition thru downstream units and better negotiating power for producers vis-a-vis buyers will provide better returns to producers including farmers. The present laws still pitch poor farmers with no negotiating power against large buyers, public or private, and they will be exploited as Mr. Sodhi suggests. This cannot double farmer incomes which is what the PM has promised.

@jose varkey problem with msp is also there. I don't think wheat or paddy grown in two different areas would have the same quality or value. By fixing the prices it would either force the buyer to pay extra or prevent others from buying, that is it goes unsold, ultimately hurting the farmer. That is why msp system I feel is not a good one.. Instead there should a demand and supply price.. Imo that's higher price msp for required crops and lower price for surplus.. And for that to happen msp has to be decided at regular intervals.. Maybe a year or so.. But please don't fix the msp price.. It only lead to more problems.
And for grievances I completely agree with you. Also I feel a separate institution for agricultural markets is a step I feel could be done. This will allow the institution to focus and prioritise the cases while also reducing the burden of out already overburdened courts.
Hopefully a good solution comes out.

The method of participation of all stakeholders was necessary. This was not done by the Government pushing through the bill.
