one of my favorite moments with him is when he finally opens the scroll and sees his reflection and says "Its empty!" in utter disbelief. Which tugged at my heart strings so much, because his sense of worth isn't self generated, as Po is, but generated by others approval. I felt it deep in my heart, because as you said, he's relatable. You try so hard, work endlessly, to fulfill the expectations and dreams of someone you care deeply for...only to come to a realization that they either dont have your back, or there is someone always better. So in the end it feels like you wasted all that time and effort, and dont see the value in yourself or even your skills.

I loved you too much to see what I was turning you into. I'm sorry." That look Tai lung gives right after says EVERYTHING. He never thought he would actually hear those words leave shifus mouth and he IS moved by it but he's gone way too far and it's just too late in his eyes to turn around. And so he doubles down and convinces himself he's right and that making shifu see things the way he did wasn't actually what he wanted anymore, it didn't really matter. I've always said this movie is about shifu and Tai lung even tho po is the protagonist. Like the og karate kid.
@@totallytravicious To be honest there was not much incentive for Tai Lung to change, being stuck in a miserable place while being seemingly tortured frequently by his warden only made him simmer in his own anger much like how prison seems to oftenly do to people in real life.
@mr.burn-out6553 oh I fully agree that warden is a complete asshole for no reason. I remember seeing someone talk about the movie and say it's so fucked up that Po is the only character capable of learning the secret of the dragon scroll bc hes the only character with a parent that actually cares about his well being and loves him no matter what and Tai lung very obviously doesn't have that as that's kinda the entire plot. Very very sad. But it's just nice to see that he's still... well ig not human, but they made him very real and grounded.
My man escaped the deepest and darkest cell from the most fortified prision in China. Defeated in a 5v1 the most fearsome and powerful warriors the Valley of Peace had. Completely destroyed his former master in a 1v1 battle after a long journey. And he STILL NEEDED Shifu’s approval and the Scroll’s powers to believe he was a real powerful warrior. That’s how little self confidence Tai Lung has. “Who denied me my destiny?” He completely believed Shifu was in charge of his destiny, and not himself.
Tai Lung wanted to be the best; Po wanted to be his best. Like their origin, like their fathers, and like their desire to learn kung fu, Tai Lung and Po mirror each other. That's why Kung Fu Panda is peak animated media, it's not black and white but shades of grey.
The best part is that when Po gets ready to leave, Shifu gets to see he's made the same mistake again (this time, contextualized in a way that makes it exceedingly easy to see and hard to ignore) - he was too busy trying to push people to be what he wanted them to be (in Po's case: gone) instead of helping them to be the best people they could (something that could actually create a great dragon warrior)
I think you just explained why tai king wanted to learn king fu, because it’s what Sifu filled his head with dreams. Because he was raised to think of it that way, why he wanted to be the best at it.
4:26 "One way in, One way out, One thousand guards, and One prisoner." "Yes, except that prisoner is Thai Lung." That line genuinely made me scared of him before even seeing him.
Mr Ping is a truly good example of what a true father can and should be. In the third film, he first is jealous of Po having found his true father, but now is simply happy for Po, as he now has more family. And I still remember my favourite line from the 2nd movie from him: "And from that day onwards, both my soup and life became that much more sweeter." Such a beautiful line showing his love for Po.
If Shifu had stayed with Tai Lung that day, told him that: "I am proud of you. I don't care about any scrolls or titles. You have done so much, and to me you have always been a dragon warrior and always will be." and then hugged him, then so many terrible consequences would not have happened. However, Shifu always preferred Oogway, even to his most beloved Tai Lung.
I think there should be more focus on the fact that it is Shifu's fault for making Tai Lung that way. The appeal of Tai Lung is that... We, as an audience, understand that Tai Lung did not reach this point for no reason and we sympathise with his pain and the weight of expectation - something which every single one of us experiences. Tai Lung did not want to be the dragon warrior. Tai Lung wanted for Shifu to love him. That made all the difference.
Not necessarely Shifu's love, but for him to be proud of him. Also, it's not just Shifu's fault alone. Yes, he pushed Tai Lung to become better and better, but he was also blinded by his own love for him as he told him during that confrontation.
Kung fu panda is also about Shifu learning what it means to be a true dragon warrior. Thats why he was so dismissive with po, and couldnt understand what oogway saw in him. He didnt know that a Dragon Warrior is not only about physical strength but also mental strength. A balance of skill and peace of mind which Tai-lung lacked compared to po Shifu projected his own idealization of what a dragon warrior should be in Tai lung. And as a result Tailung became a colateral damage of Shifu flawed expectations and teaching methods. I love how kids movies used to be so thoughtful back in the days
Not really. Yes we all feel for Tai Lung, but few of us become Tai Lung. Believe it or not, you are expected to nit go on a rampage and destroy cities, if you try for something, and don't get it. No it is not Shifu's fault that Tai Lung went mad. As Shifu said, he was just sorry that he didn't see what Tai Lung was becoming / what Shifu was turning him in to. Why are you not being honest about what Tai Lung wanted? You say he just wanted Shifu's love. He had it. Shifu said he was always proud, and he was sorry. Then Tai Lung said, "I don't want your apology, I want my scroll." Yes, Tai Lung just wanted the power, which is why he was rejected in the first place, and why he became villainous.
@@JayS.-mm3qr This implies that Tai Lung always was intrinsically self centred and hungry for power. Unless we think he was always unstable in the head - discounting someone"s nurture for their ENTIRE life is ludicrous. He should have been raised better. Imagine you are raised to believe you only have one purpose and then be expected to show maturity and understanding when that was not explicitly highlighted and engrained into you. This is ignorance. This is like saying "why didn't you know better" when no one taught you what that can be. Shifu does not get to walk scott free and to say "Tai Lung was always like this". Rubbish.
You definitely should break down Lord Shen and Kai as well. Kung Fu Panda villains are all very great. Kai's theme is so well done too. Shen is so terrifying. Even more so than Tai Lung I think
Tai Lung. a man who was left alone, unconditionally given love by Shifu, was told that he WOULD be the dragon warrior. was told that he was destined for greatness, but when he was denied his greatness, it wasn’t upset. he was only upset when his father, the man who promised him everything didn’t even say a word in his defense. he felt abandoned, the only thing in the world that never let him down was his own power, hence why he attacked
He was never explicitly told he was destined to be the Dragon Warrior, he was only told he was destined for greatness. He alone couldn't conceive of greatness as anything else than the title of Dragon Warrior.
@ “Not your fault? Who filled my head with dreams?”. From this line we can INFER that Shifu told him he was to be the dragon warrior, which is why he believes he deserves the scroll so much. not everything has to be said. Tai Lung is a child seeking an apology
@@SuitedFish Shifu does apologize, Tai Lung then say "I don't want your apologies, I want my scroll". And saying that the line "who filled my head with dreams" infers that Shifu told him he was going to be the dragon warrior is kinda dubious at best. Shifu could very well be meaning that Tai Lung would be one of the Furious Five, or simply that he would be the next great Kung Fu master after Shifu passed away/retired
@ he realized that he had already gone too far even tho he got an apology which is why he said he didn’t want it. it was too late. And Tai Lung was already stronger than the Furious five before he got imprisoned so it’s very doubtful that he would’ve been promised that. He has such a fixation to be the dragon warrior bc he was meant to be the best. Shifu trained him and told him that he will be the best, and the best if the dragon warrior, so it only makes sense that shifu would just straight up tell him he’s mean to be the dragon warrior. It’s a movie, meaning they only have limited time, they don’t show everything because the audience is able to infer what happened. it only makes sense that he was told he would be the dragon warrior, otherwise, shifu would not have put tai lung in front of Oogway to finally see if he was told he the dragon warrior. shifu 100% would not spring a test like that on his adopted son
Tai Lung was literally named to be the "Great Dragon." His entire identity is formed around becoming the Dragon Warrior. His mentor even named him as such.
Some guy on tiktok said that the creators of the movie explained that oogway combined his knowledge on acupuncture and chi to create the shell prison, the needles block chi points on his body which prevent him from using his strength and there is a locking mechanism to keep them in place, a lock that we all knew he bipassed using a feather.
@@KareemMendoza-o3z I don't want to read too much in to kfp. The more I learn, the more I can't help but think Oogway is an ahole. They don't discuss how Tai Lung went to the bathroom all bound up. I guess that rhino had to clean it.
This is actually explained pretty well in both real life and in the movie, we see Mantis practicing acupuncture on Po after his training, which obviously is real, though a better showing of this would be pressure point combat, there are pressure points or areas with lots of nerves that are particularly sensitive (ex- the neck, the thigh, under the shoulders) that are either painful or makes you go limp, best seen when Oogway incapacitates Tai Lung or when Tai Lung beats the 5
I think that was Tai Lung’s test was to get rejected to understand humility which ultimately he failed because you need to acknowledge failure not as a smear but as a a stepping stone to be better

11:12 he also wanted validation for Shifu, his father, to prove that his belief in him wasn’t unfounded. To prove that his ability to train was unparalleled.
I think one thing people miss is that unlike Poe, Tai Lung was pushed to be lethal. I'm pretty sure at one point he yells at Shifu "Who pushed me until my bones cracked!?", Poe instead was showered with unconditional love. While Tai Lung felt he had to EARN his love. No one would love him if he wasn't pushed to be the way he is that we see now. I would go as far to say he was neglected, which is considered a form of emotional abuse.
I don't know that the Furious Five were necessarily clean- Tigress let her desire to prove Ooguay's choice of Po wrong lead her to the reckless decision to challenge Tai Lung herself. Now, that wasn't driven from a place of obsession like with Tai Lung, but I do think her ego was very much bruised by Po's selection- I think in her mind she was the worthy one. Thankfully she ended up respecting the decision, since her higher priority was that the Dragon Warrior was properly selected and could be the hero that defends the Valley. Which itself is a good foil to Tai Lung's own reaction to his ambitions being blocked by Ooguay's decisions. Tigress didn't do anything underhanded. She didn't sabotage Po, while she wasn't particularly nice to him at first, she had something Tai Lung didn't properly have: Respect for the process.
Wasn't tigress adopted by shi-fu as well. I think thats another reason she wanted to challenge ti lung to prove she wasn't like him because she kept her at arms length because he was scared of her becoming like ti lung
Tai Lung was just misguided by the false hopes and expectations Shifu gave him, pushing him to be better as the dragon warrior - Tai Lung didn't want all that, he wanted Shifu to be proud of him. Due to being pushed this way by Shifu, Tai Lung couldn't take the rejection well when he was denied the scroll and was unable to humble himself
Tai long was not a villian,he was trained to receive the dragon scroll a literal blank peice of paper and when hes denied what he was promised which is literaly nothing he trys to take it by force and they still deny it to him, imagine being promised a cookie for good behavior only for your parants NOT to give you the cookie so you try to take a cookie from an empty cookie jar and rather then showing the child that its empty the parents instead fight, capture and throw the child in jail, further more they call him evil.
Don’t forget Grandpa has future sight and set the kid up in the first place so he could point to another kid and get them a lifetime supply of cookies in exchange for burning his computer when he’s dead(Kai)

And when Tai Lung faced Shiuf, Shuif finally revealed how proud he always was of Tai Lung and that he was sorry, and it actually hit at Tai Lung hard enough to make him pause for a moment
There’s nothing more heartbreaking than hearing him scream for approval as he fights his master. He is so big and powerful yet so vulnerable and flawed. You realize many of us are like him.
A really lovely summary of a surprisingly good film and a great character. I'd forgot about the prison escape, and the lines, "Who filled my head with dreams!? Who pushed me to train until my bones cracked!? Who denied me my destiny!?" is really wonderfully acted and animated, that has just come back to my memories. Made me a subscriber :)
I think another reason Po didn't went down the same road with Tai Lung is Mr. Ping too. They have a very secure relationship, in the firecracker chair scene Po's tone and face when he confessed he love Kung Fu he knew that his dad would be shock, but still supports him, but for Tai Lung... I'm not sure if Shifu ever knew his hobby, or if he even have one. And you know what? it's not entirely Shifu's fault, he is a Master, a teacher. Sure, he have father like moments with Tai Lung, but at the end of the day Shifu still saw him as a student. Mr. Ping raised Po well because he already made decision to be a dad since he first took Po in.
Another great point is during the fight between Shifu and Tai Lung when Shifu tells him that he's always been proud of him. Tai Lung actually stops for a moment and seems almost heartbroken at what is happening, but after 20 years of festering in prison, Shifu's validation no longer does anything for him which prevents Tai Lung from becoming a redeemable villain. His obsession has driven him to such lengths that when Shifu says he'd rather die than give him the scroll, Tai Lung is actually willing to kill him to get what he feels is owed to him, leading to the necessary intervention of Po.
I remember watching this movie and the escape of Tai Lung when I was a kid and I was extremely terrified. His precision and his growl while escaping was really scary and says a lot about him as a villain.
14:54 *the more the UA-camr talked, the more the viewer realized that what was so genius about the writing of king fu panda was the incredible use of emotional trauma understood by every overachieving Chinese son or daughter*
We need a short or something to flush out his character from KF1 to KF4. His character arc seems too rushed to just be included in the 4th movie. During his time in the spirit realm he seemingly forgot his ambitions and suddenly is fine with being imprisoned (again) but this time in the spirit realm. Hes calm, understanding and almost pacifistic.
If you remove Shifu and Oogway then there wouldn't be much of a movie, because Oogway also had his hand on Tailung's downfall, instead of trying to instruct his friend and Tailung, like "You have ambition young one, but the title of the dragon warrior is not born of reliance on physical strength and expertise but something deeper, I suggest you look deep inside you, question why you want to be the dragon warrior or if that is what you really desire" What Oogway said in a nutshell was basically "Nah, you're evil, lmao" Also, it's Oogway the one who caused Tai Lung to get released, if he didn't told Shifu then Tai Lung wouldn't have obtained the feather to unlock his restrains
It is fun but sad to think, that Kung Fu Panda would have never happened if Shifu had simply said "Even if Oogway doesn't think you are right for being the Dragon Warrior, I am proud of everything you have done" and took him for a picnic
@ 11:40 I started to genuinely see what Ive been doing wrong in my own pursuit of learning about and learning Kung Fu, and as the video continued with "His sense of self worth wasn't tied to the recognition of others." I genuinely shed a tear. Thats goofy I know but, heres the thing: Kung Fu is a discipline I took up by chance looking to change my life around, for the sake of practicing something good for my body and mind. But along the way I honestly lost the way of what I once practice for, I wanted to be a Sifu or Teacher, Master, whatever we wanna call it one day to finally be taken seriously by others, so I started chasing the recognition of others so extremely that I burn myself out and even switch styles based off of "what would make me a master ""quicker"". Now I can finally understand that the title should come as I persue it out of passion for the art, but not for desire of being famous or being approved of by my peers, and I should do what I originally did, learn Kung Fu. Thank you video essay person on UA-cam recommended to me, this has saved my martial arts journey truly. To anyone who actually read this: Be authentic, be you
Most of the time, villains are greatly written when they're just purely evil with desires and revenge and no layers nor complexity involved at all which was always enjoyable like the Disney villains as example. Not to mention avoids tragic or sympathy since they're fine without them. You may disagree but I hope you understand what I'm saying regardless.
Honestly, keeping Tai Lung imprisoned the way he was, is worse than just killing him. He just dwells, restricted, full of pent up anger and pain, unable to feel the joys of life. And he's the embodiment of that one meme - "you fucked up, you should have killed me." .
10:56 the thing that causes the difference in their goals is the idea that tai lung was raised on Kong fu and the idea that he was the dragon warrior but po was raised in a small humble home so when tai lung is turned down from the role it destroyed him because that was his purpose for life and the betrayal from the man he saw as his father and when all you have in your life is your father and king fu and your father betrays you then you’ll be shaken but po was from humble beginnings and when the higher role was presented he humbly accepted so thats the difference
Just imagine if instead of being tormented for 20 years in prison, Shifu and Oogway actually talked to him, explained where he went wrong and helped him become better. Seriously, no one even told Tai Lung WHY is he not the Dragon Warrior.
Really adore your series. Could you cover any villains who are completely/mostly silent in their screen time? I'm interested in knowing how silence adds to menace. If a good example doesn't exist, please do try to cover a villain whose sole purpose is to be menacing. Thanks in advance!
I remember the Scene when he got the blue Fire on his paws. (which could be Hotter then normal Fire!!) Using it to fight harder. The Anger and Sadness in him yelling "Everything I did, I did to make You proud! Tell me how proud you are Shifu!" and immediately after a few more blows the scene goes from pure anger and energy to sadness and stillness. The Hotter blue fire flicked off his hands as he just stares as Shifu on the Floor. I remember that because Shifu was basically on the defense the entire time. Showing how hesitant Shifu was to hurt (What i think) was still his son. And Tai Lung paused to listen to him. HE PAUSED!! he wanted Validation even Then!!
He didn’t crave that shifu wanted it for him and pushed the dream on him and tai lung just wanted to make his dad happy then to do all that and have his father say”tough luck” when he was denied
The scene where he looks at the dragon scroll and says, confused "it's nothing" when looking at himself, and then Po looks at it, smiling and content with himself is a perfect culmination of the contrast between them
One thing about Po. He didn't exactly remember being abandoned. In 2, when he does start to remember, he literally comes close to death twice before coming to peace, trying to get answers from Shen.
Po also sought validation. He told Shifu that it was better that he yelled at him and said he smells then living another day being himself. Po sought self validation while Tai Lung sought validation from Shifu. The only reason why Tai Lung went off the rails was because he was told he was evil. For no reason. Shifu, the soul person that Tai Lung longed to be proud of him and love him, never stood by him when told “yeah your son is gonna be an evil asshole.” That’s crushing to have someone you love think that after all you’ve accomplished meant nothing anymore because some old turtle comes along and says you’re evil so you must be evil So Tai Long seeks validation to proove his worth. Po sought validation for himself so he feels like he’s worth something
So I’m not going to use this for a “vengeful” villain. But I am going to use this for A villain. But your line about “the demonstration exceeds the expectations built” resonated with me there. I think I can work a way into hyping this villain up as an intelligent person who is dangerous because of their planning. But then have not only the hype surrounding them lul you into a false sense of understanding. But also reveal that in actual combat they are not to be trifled with as well
Nobody ever questions Oogway, its ok for him to go on a chaos spree then magically find enlightenment and stop his friend but wanna stop someone from a destiny that could be their enlightenment.
Oogway only looked out for himself. He used Po to stop Kai, he used Shifu to train Po, and he didn’t stop Shifu from accidentally abusing Tai Lung so he could use him to make Po a hero to obligate him to stop Kai. Oogway had well over a decade to help Tai Lung before he was too far gone but instead had a convenient vow of silence that ended right when Tai Lung fell.
I wonder if the writers of Ninjago got inspiration for Morro’s backstory story form Tai-Lung as both have similarities: -Both were taken in by their master. - Both were trained by their master/adopted guardian. - They were led to believe that they would become “the chosen one” which led to them being overconfident and arrogant. - Both were livid when they weren’t granted that position of power and sought vengeance against their former master. While it could’ve been a big coincidence and I’m not sure if other villains had this similar backstory but both are great antagonists that have a good with to their character.
Shifu failed to separate their roles as mentor and student, and their roles as parent and child. The latter of which is about unconditional love that he failed to give.
Both shifu and Oogway failed him. Shifu taught him that failure is unacceptable he should always be strong. Oogway failed in guiding him spiritually. He saw the darkness that Shifu was inspiring in him and did NOTHING. Then instead of taking him aside and counseling him after his outrage they toss him in prison. My man deserves every ounce of anger in his veins.
7:44 there is a theory that master oogway Denyed tai lung as a test and if tai lung accepted his faith as not the dragon warrior oogway will tell him it was a test and he succeeded But tai lung anger made him failed his test and for a reason imagine spending all your life training for something it just was not ment for you

Ah yes the familiar gifted child to mentally ill adult pipeline
My man escaped the deepest and darkest cell from the most fortified prision in China.
Defeated in a 5v1 the most fearsome and powerful warriors the Valley of Peace had.
Completely destroyed his former master in a 1v1 battle after a long journey.
And he STILL NEEDED Shifu’s approval and the Scroll’s powers to believe he was a real powerful warrior.
That’s how little self confidence Tai Lung has.
“Who denied me my destiny?”
He completely believed Shifu was in charge of his destiny, and not himself.
I thought it was in Mongolia that he was locked up
Tai Lung wanted to be the best; Po wanted to be his best.
Brilliantly said! You highlight the first goal's flaw: becoming THE best isn't something we can control. But we CAN control becoming OUR best.
And I still remember my favourite line from the 2nd movie from him: "And from that day onwards, both my soup and life became that much more sweeter."
Such a beautiful line showing his love for Po.
It's largely Shifu's fault that he got there. It's largely Tai Lung's fault he's still there.....
Kung fu panda is also about Shifu learning what it means to be a true dragon warrior. Thats why he was so dismissive with po, and couldnt understand what oogway saw in him.
He didnt know that a Dragon Warrior is not only about physical strength but also mental strength.
A balance of skill and peace of mind which Tai-lung lacked compared to po
Shifu projected his own idealization of what a dragon warrior should be in Tai lung.
Funny that the chameleon wasnt mentioned in ur comment
Wait there's a chameleon
What chameleon are you talking about?
honestly theres not much to talk about with kai..
@@z_ahra_a agree. While he wasn't deep he served well enough as a villain
Tai Lung. a man who was left alone, unconditionally given love by Shifu, was told that he WOULD be the dragon warrior. was told that he was destined for greatness, but when he was denied his greatness, it wasn’t upset. he was only upset when his father, the man who promised him everything didn’t even say a word in his defense. he felt abandoned, the only thing in the world that never let him down was his own power, hence why he attacked
He gave Tai Lung zero guidance, and then creates a 24hr torture device. It's sick. Tai Lung didn't kill anyone, he wrecked stuff. They really dropped the ball on teaching Tai.
@@Kalashnikov2034 That is true, the first steps in learning from our flaws is acknowledging our faults as a step to unlock hidden potential in yourself and learn to be humble

These lines prove Toon's point and they're also iconic
What works about Tai Lung for me is that he is an understandable villain, not a "redeemable" one. We understand why he does what he does, and it is really interesting. But he isn't excused. He does awful things and shouldn't be redeemed. And yeah, he's also got a great design, is really menacing, and has one fantastic vocal performance. But I'll always love a Jack Horner-type villain.

Mr. Ping is indeed an amazing parent
Tai Lung is Indeed an amazing vengeful villain, he's also really threatening
There’s a reason I watched Kuhn Fu Panda so much as a child. The story and especially the villain was fantastic‼️
The best part of the movie is Tai Lung wouldn’t have escaped if Shifu didn’t send that messenger
THANK YOU! I was thinking that the whole video and didn't know if anyone else would say it!!
Oogway even tells him „One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it.“
It’s a basically a Greek tragedy.
11:12 he also wanted validation for Shifu, his father, to prove that his belief in him wasn’t unfounded. To prove that his ability to train was unparalleled.
I love your villain analyses, they are so well made!
I really hope to see a "Funny Villain" analysis in the future, with Yzma and Hades as examples
@@chloemorris8884 I'm sure that contributed yeah. Whether it was her only motivation or if her ego also played a part is hard to say.
I’m glad so many KFP fans agree that Mr Ping is the GOAT
Also fun fact: snow Leopards are the occasional predator of the panda (at least young pandas)
How to Write an unintentional Villain- Inside Out 2.
The part that gets me is that Tai Lung wouldn’t have escaped if Shifu wouldn’t have sent the duck 😂
Tai Lung was never taught how to fail with grace. Shifu failed to teach Tai Lung to be humble.
He was not thrown in prison because he tried to take it by force , he was thrown in jail because he attacked innocent people in his fit of rage.Big difference
@@husseinakhras8357 ya a rage that could have been avoided if you just gave him the blank scoll and said "see look their is nothing here your the strongest warrior in the land you can be anything you wanna be not just the dragon warrior",but no they just rejected him and treated him like a menace, people have a tendancy to become monsters when they are treated like one to begin with, accepting the role given to them by others as you cannot rationalize with irrational people its called the horns and halo effect and the flip side is also true as sometimes people have such an image of purity and sainthood that no act no matter how evil act can sway others, this is why some of the most beautiful celebrities are some of the most awful people you will ever meet and have done the most dispicable things, drugs, adultery, murder, pooping in someones bed, because they know they can get away with it.the whole point of the movie is to not judge others by their cover but thats exactly what oogway did.
And when Tai Lung faced Shiuf, Shuif finally revealed how proud he always was of Tai Lung and that he was sorry, and it actually hit at Tai Lung hard enough to make him pause for a moment
0:27 it still bothers me they Po just heartlessly kills Tai Lung
Agreed he didn’t even give him a chance unlike Shen who didn’t even deserve one as much
There’s nothing more heartbreaking than hearing him scream for approval as he fights his master.
As a video essay enjoyer and a Kung Fu Panda enthusiasts, this video is an absolute banger
Fantastic analysis
Really enjoyed this breakdown of a character, thanks for the video!
This is the first video I watched by you and holy shit, you're amazing. I love your video essay style. You earned yourself a subscribe.
Tai lung- hardwork
Po- talent
14:54
*the more the UA-camr talked, the more the viewer realized that what was so genius about the writing of king fu panda was the incredible use of emotional trauma understood by every overachieving Chinese son or daughter*
No 'cause I want Tai Lung's lashes, how the flip do they look so good???
We need a short or something to flush out his character from KF1 to KF4. His character arc seems too rushed to just be included in the 4th movie. During his time in the spirit realm he seemingly forgot his ambitions and suddenly is fine with being imprisoned (again) but this time in the spirit realm. Hes calm, understanding and almost pacifistic.
How DARE you say this movie came out SIXTEEN YEARS AG- ...well, fiddlesticks.
If you remove Shifu and Oogway then there wouldn't be much of a movie, because Oogway also had his hand on Tailung's downfall, instead of trying to instruct his friend and Tailung, like "You have ambition young one, but the title of the dragon warrior is not born of reliance on physical strength and expertise but something deeper, I suggest you look deep inside you, question why you want to be the dragon warrior or if that is what you really desire"
What Oogway said in a nutshell was basically "Nah, you're evil, lmao"
Also, it's Oogway the one who caused Tai Lung to get released, if he didn't told Shifu then Tai Lung wouldn't have obtained the feather to unlock his restrains
It’s sad how for these villains whom we sympathize with, they always get killed in the end and don’t even get to seek out their justice at all
It is fun but sad to think, that Kung Fu Panda would have never happened if Shifu had simply said "Even if Oogway doesn't think you are right for being the Dragon Warrior, I am proud of everything you have done" and took him for a picnic
Tai Lung was gentle parented, promised greatness and never denied his whole life.
Until he suddenly was.
He will always be my favorite KFP villain. He's so angry yet tragic
The prison break scene will always resonate with me whenever I think about *Kung Fu Panda.*
@ 11:40 I started to genuinely see what Ive been doing wrong in my own pursuit of learning about and learning Kung Fu, and as the video continued with "His sense of self worth wasn't tied to the recognition of others." I genuinely shed a tear. Thats goofy I know but, heres the thing:
Kung Fu is a discipline I took up by chance looking to change my life around, for the sake of practicing something good for my body and mind.
Suggestion lord shen
Honestly, keeping Tai Lung imprisoned the way he was, is worse than just killing him.
He just dwells, restricted, full of pent up anger and pain, unable to feel the joys of life.
And he's the embodiment of that one meme - "you fucked up, you should have killed me." .
I’m glad you discussed Tai Lung (great dragon), now I’m interested in your thoughts about The Chameleon.
🚮

@@llysehislop yeah i know, i was just pointing fun at it
I like how Tai Lung just casually leaned on the bridge while 4 animals held it together.
I always thought of it as not the rejection angering Ty lung, it was shifu’s reaction. His father didn’t defend him when it mattered
Tai lung is the best villain I seen in a movie since shun yu in Mulan .
When I think of Tai Lung, I think of childhood trauma and insecure attachment.
Mr. Ping is the...

He didn’t crave that shifu wanted it for him and pushed the dream on him and tai lung just wanted to make his dad happy then to do all that and have his father say”tough luck” when he was denied

Po is just that strong.

That prison escape sequence is one of the most stunning pieces of cinema I have ever seen!
6:28-6:30
Tai Lung got the rit.
The scene where he looks at the dragon scroll and says, confused
"it's nothing" when looking at himself, and then Po looks at it, smiling and content with himself is a perfect culmination of the contrast between them
nice video!
Shifu, the soul person that Tai Lung longed to be proud of him and love him, never stood by him when told “yeah your son is gonna be an evil asshole.” That’s crushing to have someone you love think that after all you’ve accomplished meant nothing anymore because some old turtle comes along and says you’re evil so you must be evil
So Tai Long seeks validation to proove his worth. Po sought validation for himself so he feels like he’s worth something
So basically, to make a good vengeful villain, you give them a good, _reasonable_ reason to be angry
I’d say yes if Mrs Voorhees didn’t exist
We all know what you mean when you say Mr. Ping is the GOAT.
But also reveal that in actual combat they are not to be trifled with as well
Idk I feel Captain Hook way more vengeful bro went to the ends of the earth to get to Peter Pan
One of my favorite quotes from Master Oogway is, "One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it."
@@emeraldpichu1 yes; a being cannot simultaneously be omniscient, invincible, and good.
I hope you make a video about Sleeping Beauty's Maleficent soon.
I wonder if the writers of Ninjago got inspiration for Morro’s backstory story form Tai-Lung as both have similarities:
-Both were taken in by their master.
Since when did Kai try to attack sensei wu?

Well He's the only Villain that come to my mind when someone says "name a villain that was right"
Okay but if you think about it, oogway should have just given him the scroll.
Yeah, he clearly didn't have the insight to become the dragon warrior using it. One does wonder how Tai Lung would have reacted in that circumstance.
