- In this edition of Instant Analysis, USCFootball.com reporters Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette recap USC's 33-30 overtime loss to #4 Penn State at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It's another one-score loss for Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans, who have now dropped eight of their last 13 games dating back to last season. USC led by 14 points at halftime but couldn't hold up in the second half and once again fell on the wrong side of a close game. The Trojans are now a disappointing 3-3 while the Nittany Lions improved to a perfect 6-0.
Face the undeniable truth...Riley is far from the kind of coach every SC fan hoped for. His poor coaching abilities are now exposed and there's no other way to describe him other than a big fraud, just like Paul Finebaum labeled him at the end of last season.

The only thing I keep going back to is as a team, we don’t run the ball enough. I think we ran it only 24 times today. Almost every game going back to 2022, we pass more than we run. You have to use creative run packages involving your tight ends and backs but we should be running it more than passing it in this conference. We need more possessions to give our defense a breather. They’re on the field less than our defense. He’s gotta make the adjustments in-game much quicker. Close but no cigar.
Penn State is run team but they outpassed us.
LR is either too hard headed, as an x-Qb and Qb coach, to allow the run game to overtake; or he is just plan ignorant. He has no heavy short yardage/GL packaged, no 4 min run the clock offense, doesn’t take advantage of quickly running plays. Etc etc etc. He is a glorified QB coach not a HC. I totally agree with his lack of ability to make in game adjustments. His O has been almost totally shut down in the 2nd half.
Beware of the coach that builds his resume with 2 Heisman winners at OK and still could not beat the big dogs.... You call a timeout and discuss exactly what play to call.
USC is and was desperate and it shows. USC is a 15-25ish ranked program on a yearly basis now. The days of No. 1 are over

PSU is 26-4 in the regular season going back 3 seasons. Those 4 losses came against two top 5 teams including one natty winner. USC got smacked by Utah twice in the same season that PSU smacked that same Utah team in the Rose Bowl and ended Rising's career.
That game is a 10 point + regulation win in happy valley. USC had every advantage imaginable including a gift on the opening drive that negated a TD. 4 points erased for PSU by the refs. A 2300 mile road trip, a win is a win. We have watched USC travel. Doesn't go well

Congrats to Penn State - very good team. Proud of the Trojans. We really have improved. Yeah, yeah the scoreboard doesn’t say that. These aren’t game we are getting blown out and are games for us to lose. That will change as the players mature and new better players enter the program. I think we are two years away from really being a great team. The fruit is showing even though not on the scoreboard yet. Moss is in a bit of a slump but he’s also learning and seeing new things. Fight On!
I don't agree that it was good to let the clock roll. With a few good plays we might have gotten a touchdown. But we will never know because we were settling for a field goal. Which would have been around a 50 yarder. At the very worst, we would have been in better field goal position. Play to win and never let your foot off the gas. Riley is sometimes confused in his play calling and his game plan. IMO
Riley just doesn't have that killer instinct.

Riley is just like every other offensive minded new age soft coach, no other coach that actually commands respect from his players, allows Caleb to not take questions, he literally let Kyler not prepare like he should and allowed his gaming habits to continue, he allowed baker to plant the flag on Ohio State, penn state was about to do the same here but franklin stopped it himself, Riley would never have the courage to stop his players, he is non confrontational!
Actually Penn State did go to midfield and put the flag in the ground. Or at least they tried to put it in but they held it right there. So don't say that Franklin stop those players. Because I was there and I saw it. The Penn State flag went right to midfield where the players held it.

I go back to the third-quarter right after halftime. I expected Penn State to drive and maybe get a touchdown but that second Touchdown was on the defense. That should not have happened plus on our first drive after halftime we stalled again. We couldn’t even get three points.

Any chance we can get Pete Carroll to come in as a consultant to help maybe give a fresh perspective and "mentor" Coach Riley. It would seem like a hell of an opportunity and resource to tap while he is on campus teaching. It would signal his willingness to go outside himself and grow. The alumni would probably love it. I not saying replace Coach Riley but have someone who has done it all as a resource. Any thoughts?

Helton didn’t win a thing! The team won that game, and the player on that team were very talented. It was their best team before everyone realized Helton was not a good coach. IMO
The referees helped USC a lot that year to boost Alabama's out of conference Strength Of schedule. 😂

Through 3-years Helton had two 3 loss seasons, a 4 loss season and a Rose Bowl win. Riley has already tied Helton in loses at 10 through 3 seasons and we’re only half way through year 3 for Riley!

The bitter truth to all the disappointment for fans stems from preseason high expectations and then watching the Trojans lose 3 games they couldve/shouldve won. Its hard to take.

Pretty tough look to get 20 in the first half and end up getting outside by 17 in the second half. Dont blame the refs either because if not for one the worst offensive pass interference calls since the hurricanes vs buckeyes title games 20+ years ago, Penn state eins by 4 in regulation... Refs always suck. Good teams make up for it.

Finally somebody who recognized what happened. All they had to do was run the ball and even if they got three or four yards they could have called time out. They could have done that three times. PSU's defense was giving USC the run. It was so obvious!
