That log you found is awesomely sited! I have found dozens of logs over the years, but never found one that was out in the open like that. Actually seems quite unusual that he would have felt safe drumming in such a vulnerable location. You certainly made the best of a really special situation!
Great video Gerrit thanks for sharing.
Not bad! I have never seen this bird before. Thank you for sharing!
Excellent and informative. I will definitely use your insight to look for a drumming log this spring. Thanks
Very well done. Thanks.
Fabulous!
Just discovered your channel - I really appreciate your explanations of habitat and habits of these birds! Great information for those of us who are casual park birders but would like to go further!
Great stuff Gerrit.................really enjoyed that and learned a ton. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Brian!
This is so nice to watch. I wish I could give more than 1 like on each of your videos.
Thank you!
Thanks,it was incredible to watch and to learn something about the grouse even though I live on the other side of the pond. 😀👍
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!
Fabulous birds . Just wonderful . Thank you for this .
Glad you enjoyed it

Beautiful video. Wonderful to see your process. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for another very informative and executed video! Very interesting bird and witnessing the drumming must be more impressive than watching the video. Thanks for grouse lesson and your attention to details explanations on your processes and techniques!
Thank, John. Glad you enjoyed it!
What an amazing video. This is a textbook demonstration of the dictum that intimate knowledge of one’s subject makes one a better nature photographer.
Please keep these videos coming!
Thanks, Gary! Will do my best!
Super informative with incredibly beautiful stills and video! 😍
Thanks, Linda!
One of my favorite birds! and getting out to photograph/film grouse drumming is something I look forward to every year.
The ruffed grouse in my area (northern MN) drum all night long. Throughout the night is their most active drumming time. It keeps me awake 🤣
My 7 yr old son recently gained an obsession with grouse as I've been showing him my videos... I came across your video because it was in my youtube history because he was searching "grouse drumming" while I was at work 🤣
He wants to see them in person drumming, so I'm taking him this weekend to a grouse Ive been photographing drum for three years in a row now and he has been using the same five platforms every year.
Awesome you son is interested in getting out there with you! Real life 1, iPad zero.
Just discovered your channel, thanks for alwasy speaking ethics. This is something I always try to discuss as much as possible. Make more ! :-)
Agreed! Thank you!
Excellent video! I really enjoyed you taking us through all the preparation steps and sharing your knowledge. You do a great job with the presentation and explaination of your 'game plan'.
Wow - phenomenal, Gerrit! I've been a fan of your work for a long time, and somehow just discovering your videos. And I'm stunned. Subscribing for sure. This was a wonderful lesson in finding and photographing grouse. Thank you.
Thank you very much! Appreciate the kind words!
Wow! I had your book but I’ve just discovered your channel. Really inspiring 👍
Thank you!!
Another good look at how educating ourselves on what we're searching out helps us locate and create compelling images. I have to say Gerrit, I really enjoy your story telling.
Thanks, Dave! It was a lot of talking but hope it helps some folks. The more you know the better you do!
Thank you so much for this. Was chasing ducks to photograph a few evenings ago and flushed one ruffed by accident but heard another not far away. I was actually wondering how I might be able to photograph them drumming. This video certainly highlights your knowledge of the subject. I'll look forward to the next.
very interesting and super informative video, thank you!
Excellent video and photos Gerrit! Anyone who knows ruffed grouse knows they are not an easy subject to capture. They are not only elusive, but often bust out of the forest like a 12 pt whitetail buck almost giving heart attacks. Well done!
Thank you! Yes, all depends where you are. In places where there is a lot fo hunting pressure they can be quite skittish as you say (and will often startle you!).
Amazing video and channel! After recently getting into bird photography, I've been shocked at how many photographers prioritize getting photos over the well-being of the birds. So it's been hugely uplifting and inspiring to see someone with your experience and position put such emphasis on ethical wildlife photography. Thank you for the effort you put into these, and I look forward to more!
Thanks you very much, Chris. Glad you feel this way too! With so many people out there these days it's more important than ever for us all to educate ourselves as best we can and proceed with care.
Great video Gerrit, I was out scouting a spot this morning but it was too dense for photo but i learned a lot from your view. Better luck tomorrow!
Thanks, Lyle! Good luck!
Outstanding tips . I'm near Portland . Do you mind if we talk on the phone so that I may ask you about ruffed grouse in august in the washington cascades ? Mark
That was tremendously useful information. Thanks for sharing.
Sure thing, Jon. Glad you foud it useful.
