Wow.... So ,much talking about talking.... Otherwise good stuff.. but really? Chat chat chat... A year from now maybe....m blah.
Love the wide shots showing the flocks of birds. I'm starting to prefer these shot types as they show the importance of the place for the birds survival. Agree that when things don't go to plan we can still learn. Understanding behaviour is a great asset in taking great footage or photos. Have a great holiday season and stay safe!
What an awesome GGO day
Excellent
Thanks!
Great photographs and video. I spend many hours photographing Sanderling on my local beach in the UK. Lovely to see your birds undisturbed by dogs. Heavy disturbance of the birds, sometimes deliberate, by the hundreds of dog walkers where I am...
Thank you. Unfortunately we have the dog and people problem here too. I’d hope if people understood the long migrations these birds do every year they’d be a bit more repectful.
Loved the video and photos but wanted to give a plug for your book. I’m an amateur photographer who has always been a bird watcher and your book truly got me from a point and shoot photographer to one who is learning and understanding the technical parts of photography. THANK YOU. I’ve read it cover to cover and go back time and again. And what an inspiration your photography is.
Thanks very much for the kind words! It’s always great to hear that the book is doing what it was meant to do:)
Hi Gerrit. Wow, what stunning landscapes you witnessed, absolutely incredible. However, it saddens me to see tourists being given access to walk amongst the precious wildlife and their habitat. For me personally, I would only consider going on such an expedition if we were guaranteed to stay on the water, allowing only scientists to step foot on the land in such precious and delicate environments, to carry out their research to help protect the wildlife.
Hi Gerrit, I am a little north of you in Alberta where we have much the same going on at this time of year. I love the sights of those huge flocks landing and taking off. By now we are usually frozen up and the geese and swans are starting to move on, this year however (as at Nov 9th) it has been unusually mild and our local lake (near Edmonton) where the birds roost overnight is still completely unfrozen. I like to photograph the migrating flocks landscape/environmental style with them coming into the roost just after sunset and leaving again just before and just after sunrise. It will be interesting to see if the birds move on before freeze up or not. For birds feeding in fields it's normally shots from a car that work the best though at the distances you were working at in this video I am not sure a blind would be entirely necessary (I realize you were hoping the birds would come closer). For shooting wildlife I use manual / auto iso and apply exposure compensation based on what the histogram shows, with direct sun on white birds I switch to highlight weighted metering. I like the look of the Tragopan blind but finding a place to set up and leave it overnight without risking interference is an issue!
That new window looks to be a great improvement!
So you have a favorite place for waterfowl migration near where you live?
Nice job-- Great message
Thank you very much!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and strategies to capture the photo you’re envisioning.
Thanks for watching!
Great to be surrounded by all of those geese!! Why not opt for auto ISO, as opposed to fiddling around with it? The light looked good enough so as to not worry about higher ISO readings. The V7 looks nice - I own the V6. I’m curious how it compares to the V6. Will you be doing a compare video? Thanks!!
Hi, auto ISO is still relying on the camera to make an auto determination of the correct exposure which will be incorrect some of the time. The bright sky in the background vs. ground or trees in background will cause that camera to expose differently even though the light is the same. Same goes for the white geese vs. the dark geese and I also want to expose for the geese differently (ie. underexpose the white snow goose so I don’t blow it out). What I am doing is determining the correct exposure for the middle toned subject (cackling goose) using my desired shutter speed and aperture and setting that manually. That exposure will remain correct no matter what the background is. Based on that I am simply using the ISO dial to quickly change the manual setting to one that will underexpose the bright white geese by a stop. Then they will be properly exposed no matter the background as well. No auto setting can handle all of those variables quickly and consistently. Hope that makes sense!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE INSPIRATIONAL VIDEOS. I am hoping to visit Antarctica next year and as an amateur photographer, it is most definitely on the top on my bucket list. I see in one shot, you were using a tripod. I have been told by many companies that this is not permitted and you can’t put anything on the ground? Have they relaxed the rules or, as you were doing a promotional video, were you given special permission? I know the Z9 is a heavy beast. Your FANTASTIC ICEBERG SHOTS were much wider. When you were in the zodiac, how did you decide whether to bring a long lens or a wide one or did you have two camera bodies/lenses at the ready. Sorry for the barrage of questions but your videos have really inspired me.
This was last year and they were allowing tripods only on the ground. I think that may still be the case officially but some companies may be going beyond that. You might push back a bit and see what they say.
I went light so I was actually changing lenses on the zodiac when conditions allowed.
Very inspiring. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
This is really incredible. I am so happy I stumbled across this video. Thanks for making this! Great footage and incredible stills!
Thanks for watching!
Good review thankyou and a really great speech at the end.
Thank you!!
Thanks for another excellent video. Interesting to see the dipper behavior. I'm wondering if some of the video clips could be shown in slow motion, for example the clip at around 6:30.
Sure thing! I shot everything at 24 FPS this day. I’ll shoot some higher frame rates and slow a few things down next time!
I was in Denali a while back at the start of September (won a place in the lottery) and was surprised how beautiful the tundra was. It's good to see it again in your video. I'm wondering, were you able to take your car in or did you take the bus both ways?
We just hiked in from the gate
Excellent footage and photographs Gerrit! I'm in Alberta and have been looking for the Great Gray for weeks now. Hopefully I can find these beautiful birds before the snow sets in.
Thanks! They can be very elusive but I hope you find them!
I was looking for one of these little ones yesterday at a local park here in King County, WA. No luck, it was 9-10ish in the morning.
It’s a tough time of year to find them, but I hope you have better luck soon!
Ezt a szürke baglyot az én hazámban uráli bagolynak nevezik. Az utóbbi húsz évben terjeszkedett keletről nyugati irányba és ma már elég közönséges fészkelő az ország hegyes vidékein. Igen goromba természetű bagoly, különösen a fészkelő helye környékén. A fiókák madártani gyűrűzése esetén ezért az ornitológosok arcot is védő sisakot és bőr felsőruhát viselnek. Jól elfogadja a nagy mesterséges fa madár-odút. Ez esetben tükröt szerelünk fel, hogy a fészkelést ellenőrizni lehessen, távcsővel távolabbról, zavarás nélkül./ This gray owl is called the Ural owl in my country. In the last twenty years, it has expanded from east to west and is now a fairly common nester in the mountainous regions of the country. A very rude owl, especially around the nesting area. In case of ornithological ringing of nestlings, ornithologists therefore wear face-protecting helmets and leather outerwear. It accepts the large artificial wooden birdhouse well. In this case, we install a mirror so that the nesting can be checked from a distance with binoculars, without disturbance.
The images are spectacular! Amazing photography! The sheep with that backdrop is surreal! 🙏
Thank you!
I love your videos because every single word provides information. a pure stream of 100% quality (and accurate) information, thank you again
Thank you very much!!
Top shelf video of one of my favorite birds, Gerrit! I always look forward to seeing your work.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Gerrit, the chair blind, what is the maximum load capacity for the chair? Thanks.
Very safe at 220. Not sure beyond that.
Amazing shots.
Glad you enjoyed it
Being based in the northern New England states, I never get to see dippers so this video was a treat. Such a cool bird and so much creative potential with their behavior diving under water. Thanks again for making these high-quality videos!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Lovely video Gerrit! Thank you for sharing!👏
Many thanks!
Amazing!
Thanks!
Beautiful bird species and place. Great advice re positioning and working with sun light. As always the behaviours you capture are fascinating. Thank you!
Many thanks!
Outstanding work!
Thank you kindly!
Great, Gerrit. Thanks much for the photo tips as well as the beautiful images and video. You showed the birds interacting with the dead salmon from time to time. Do you think they were picking small insects, etc. off the carcasses?
Thanks, I saw one peck g at a salmon a bit but for the most part they stuck to the fresh stuff!
I like that you don’t just talk about photography, but also about taking the time to observe behavior. Turning over the leaves, eating salmon eggs, the caddisfly. All great. Thanks for sharing.
I appreciate that! Thank you.
Amazing footage, some spectacular stills and great and valuable photography notes and specific strategies. Thank you so much for sharing your work, experience, and passion for birds and photography!
Thank you for the nice comments and thanks for watching!
Nice work and narration. I had the opportunity to photograph dippers last fall in the Front Range of Colorado. A neat bird and a ton of fun to work with.
Thank you -they are definitely fun birds to shoot!
What an amazing part of the world, thank you for sharing your videos and images. I always enjoy learning how you get the photo and ability to capture birds’ natural behavior. Your channel is criminally underappreciated, views should be 10x-100x!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the kind comments!
Great vlog as usual Gerrit. They are a dynamic bird aren't they. In the UK ours are our only aquatic songbird, do you have more in the US/Canada? Our European Dipper or White-throated dipper is a very challenging bird to expose for to photograph, as it resides in identical habitat to yours, but is tricky to expose due to the dark brown plumage, and bright white chest plumage!
It is our only representative in N. America. There are a couple of additional dippers in South America as well.
A very strong start Gerrit. Clear, well video'd, engaging, tips with some technical bits in there as well. Plus, the most important point, entertaining. Thank-you
Much appreciated!
This brought out a fond memory of my family and I watching in awe at a family (male, female, two young birds) of these birds foraging at Grey Lake, Torres del Paine National Park; and I agree with some comments here, while the male is stunning, the female doesn’t stay behind in the primeval-kind of beauty these woodpeckers evoke so much!
She is a stunner - thanks for watching and subscribing!
Dall’s sheep are absolutely amazing! Almost just like albino bighorn sheep.
They’re pretty cool for sure!
Just fopund your video and really loved your photographs.
Awesome, thank you!
Nicely done. There are four Campephilus species here in Brazil, besides many other genres of woodpeckers, like Colaptes, Celeus, Melanerpes and Piculus... come and visit our forests...🎉🎉🎉
You have more of everything in Brazil :) I filmed the Araripe Manakin several years ago in Ceará. You can find that video on my website.
@@GerritVyn That's nice, I'm gonna check it!!
Oh!! This was so fabulous to see. I was there at almost the exact same time as you were (based on an ebird post I saw with your name on it!) but I certainly didn't get up to where the sheep were. So fun to see your photos of them and of the beautiful landscape, the magnificent colors and The Mountain!!! What an incredible experience it was to be there!
Hah, that’s hilarious. Hope you saw some raptor migration up there too!
Hate it when the human world interrupts quality time in the great outdoors! Lovely vid!
You said it!!
Beautiful scenery and well presented! Always enjoy seeing your work, you must have the best job in the world!
Thank you!
Love the colors that time of year, thanks for sharing this stuff with us. What month and week is this?
Last week, September 4th
Incredible scenery and wildlife, beautifully filmed and edited! Thank you so much for sharing this view of paradise.
Many thanks!!
Was really hoping you'd capture a glimpse of the half man half bear that made the trail you were hiking.
Love your work...
Thank you!
