  • One of the most famous actors to burst onto the scene in the 1980s, Michael J. Fox has become almost as famous for his very public fight against Parkinson's disease. With "Sunday Morning" anchor Jane Pauley, the "Family Ties" and "Back to the Future" star looks back on superstardom, raising $1.5 billion for Parkinson's research, and a new documentary tracing his life, called "Still."

@Sovereign Freedom My mom has early onset PD. I think selligeline and rasageline also show promise. They are "lighter" drugs than L-Dopa or dopamine agonists, they actually don't increase dopamine but inhibit MAOI so that the dopamine you have lasts longer before being broken down. Becuase it doesn't actually supply dopamine, it is less likely to downregulate your dopamine or cause you to develop tolerance. I wished my mom had tried it when she was early on, maybe it can help you given that you don't take l-dopa.

A few generations love him. My father has shown me Back To The Future back in the 90s. I still think (even though I'm a big Star Wars nerd) that that movie is the perfect trilogy. I'm always on the edge of my seat when I watch it. Michael is a big part of that. His energy, his dynamics. It's very sad to see how Parkinson's disease is affecting him, but at the same time it's so inspiring to see that he pushes through, still going strong. It will be a sad day when he will pass away.

    • @TheFinalRevelation1

@Selena Aleksick I discovered him in my teens, in the mid 90s, saw family ties as a little child but really fell in love with him after watching back to the future in 1994. And still love him as much, if not more since that time. The next best movie I discovered after that was 2001: A Space Odyssey in 2002 or 2001. For a considerable time that one remained my favorite movie superseding BTTF. But BTTF again regained its spot after a couple of years. Since mid 1990s, I've watched thousands of Hollywood moives and had about 5000 DVDs at one time. Now I don't watch that many. Too much time wasted. But MJF and BTTF will always remain in my heart and also Family ties. I guess many of my brain cells and part of my DNA have his name in them now. MJF might be part of my genetic makeup now. Not sure if such traits are passed down the generations when you love something so much. I really feel for him and pray for him. His life his choice. We must respect his choices. Only he can tell what kind of pain or misery he is in. I am sure people must tell him he is so loved and so revered. Perhaps that is giving him the strength to continue this fight.

Yes, seeing this was a bit shocking, as I hadn't seen him in an interview in a long time and was just curious where he's at - but I also wasn't aware he was 76. That's actually (and somewhat sadly) now the average life expectancy in America, after COVID dropped it (but it was already starting to a bit beforehand). My grandma was diagnosed in her 70s and only made it to like 79, and really, the fact he's been symptomatic since he was like 30-something and still made it to the current average is really impressive. I hate to say though that it looks like he's nearing the end here.

What r the official signs that you demonstrated if u don't mind me asking? I wish u the best. My mother passed from the disease rapidly at 69 yrs old in 2021. The only signs she exhibited was extreme fatigue from muscle loss, memory problems, and habitual stubbornness, before the disease left her bed-ridden. I'm two different races, so I'm not sure how it will impact me. The things i notice in me are: i rarely rarely dream, i am a extremely heavy sleeper, slight brain fogginess, and longer recovery times and sometimes pain from sports training. I try and eat a lot of of mild-to-hot salsas/peppers, garlic, and onion 🧅 as often as possible to combat my potential future problem. These are items i notice my father follows in his eating regimen, where as my mother never followed. And she never drank any alcohol, which i also think is not good. Bc adequate amounts of alcohol i believe can have benefits. For me alcohol is a mood elevator. Well I hope u try my remedies, hope it helps. And hope to hear more about your diagnosis 🤝🏼

My Grandfather passed away from Parkinson's. He was a physically strong and very smart man. And I remember when he was diagnosed, he said " I can handle stuff happening to me physically, but I don't want anything interfering with my mind." The specialist told him to keep his mind active as much as possible. So he kept constantly trying to build things that required him to use his brain. I believe that was good therapy for him. My mom died last August from Parkinson's. She was just shy of her 81st birthday. She only made it a few years after her diagnosis, and she started to fall often enough that we tried to keep her from walking on her own because it just got to be too dangerous. So for the last year and a half or so of her life she was confined to a wheelchair. Watching her slowly fade away from us was probably the hardest thing I've ever had to do. She also suffered from dementia, so her mind and memory were failing along with her body. When I watch this interview, I'm reminded all over again of how this disease doesn't care who it attacks, it just slowly takes away everything until there's nothing left. I know this piece was probably supposed to be heartwarming, but it made me cry. I miss my mom so much, and I'm so sad for what has happened to a great person like Michael J. Fox.

He’s the only short man I ever had a crush on (I’m 5’10 lol) he’s a force to be reckoned with. The documentary was inspiring too because I know what it’s like to have your body turn on you and be in pain every day. I’m 47 and I’ve had chronic pain for 20 years and like Michael in his early stages he covered it up with alcohol and pills. At first I thought I had fibromyalgia and I do, but in the past year I’m dealing with newer, scarier pain like sharp shooting pains similar to Bee Stings in my hands one minute and numbness the next and limited movement. I don’t think it’s Parkinson’s because I have no tremor but these changes I’m noticing are scary. Thanks for your honesty and bravery Mike. we’ve all got your back. ❤

Just watched this when it aired this morning. It was so incredibly sad to see him like that. Parkinson's is a very cruel disease. It's a very slow death. For what he has done to help raise awareness and the millions of dollars that his foundation has raised is absolutely phenomenal! I hope & pray to God that a cure will ne found much sooner than later. He is making the most of it (even with a sense of humor‼️) When he fell on the sidewalk during the segment this morning, and a lady came over to make sure he was ok, he told jer that she "knocked him off his feet" was pure Michael. He is an absolutely wonderful human being.

Stay strong. Hopefully there will be medical breakthroughs for many of with these terrible diseases, and in the meantime some better treatments for those of us who suffer more than most will know.
I've been living with very severe chronic pain for 25 years, as a result from a work injury that broke the L5/S1 disc in my spine, and even before that I've lived with pains from as far back as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Since around 2000 I've had some strange events, like losing the ability to lift my leg more than a few inches, and not being able to move an arm, which was attributed incorrectly to my back problems.
Then, this past 2020, as most of the world was dealing with covid, I had some type of "event" where I went from not being to move my leg, to then being able to move it, and some of the worst nerve pain in my lower back and down both legs. I also experienced permanently blurry vision in my right eye, chronic depression/anxiety, and severe brain fog. Now I am being told I more than likely have multiple sclerosis (still waiting on a VEP test and likely another spinal tap). When I read the symptoms I know "this is it". I'm really scared of my future, and I'm just trying to take things a day at a time. I am trying to make the most of what I am able to do. I am scared but I'm trying to remain resilient.
