  • Boat accident and lost my iPhone 14 Pro Max at iCAST.
    This is what happens when you rush, get over confident, don’t respect new equipment you are unfamiliar with, and are distracted. Wear PFD, connect motor kill switch to yourself, and think….more than I did. This kayak was awesome and the motor is freaking sweet, but I just majorly sucked today and I want viewers to see my mistakes and learn from them. Also have some overdue thanks…
    My favorite PFD: amzn.to/3PMmB3I
    Awesome motor: NK300 by Newport
    Awesome kayak: Bonafide RVR

    Man I was going to chirp you into next year for this BUT you made an extremely valuable point - we all make mistakes and learn from them. Yeah you’ll be infamously known as the guy that almost killed himself on a kayak but you did show the true possible dangers of motorized kayaks.

      Motorized kayaks aren’t going anywhere and I don’t want them to. I have a blast on them and they allow me to explore and better fish many areas. Just need to be smart. Importance of using a Kill Switch and wearing a Life Jacket are the big takeaways from this.

    I found a guys Android phone in a foot or so of water over by Marinatown while doing a video there. The dude lost it about a week earlier. I charged it, found his cell number and returned it to him. The new phones are quite water resistant now.

      They are pretty freaking awesome. For around $999-1100 it is one the best deals I have seen for a electric motor with that kind of horsepower power equivalent & torque! I like that they use non-proprietary battery. Nice peace of mind to know you have a WIDE array of battery options and aren’t relying on the company to continue supporting some unique battery. It also reduces costs when the battery is not proprietary. Runs on 36v.

    Glad to see there was no injuries. That can really put a damper on fun real fast!
    Its not "if," its when! One time I decided I didn't want to walk all the way around the rock embankment because I was tired from a whole day on the water. I lifed my kayaking out and unclipped all of my gear. But luckily I still had my vest on. I got the bright idea to take a short cut and climb up the rock embankment, right across to the parking lot. What I didn't account for was how slippery the rocks would be, even though I know better. I got about half way up and gravity kicked in. It happened so fast.. The kayak went first, grapping me on the paddle tether that caught me on the leg, threw me to the ground, pulled me in and we both went for a swim! Everything got dumped. Luckily most of my stuff was in water proof containers ir cases and about 80% was floating and I eventually caught up with it. My poles still had the pool noodle pieces on them and all I lost was about a half a case of soda, one of my foot pegs and a parking pole. Anything else I lost I never missed anyway.
    I could have swam to back shore if I wasn't wearing a vest, but I was already exhausted from a full day, so I don't know how long I could have lasted. We all screw up sometime. Moral of the story to anyone reading this pathetic story: wear that life vest!!!

    There still is the issue though with the amount of power those small motors have when mounted on kayaks and finding that edge or limit might mean flipping the kayak over unfortunately. I also would like to put a motor on my Hobie PA12, havent decide whether to do bow or stern mount,but I dont want to find that liimit by doing donuts in the middle of the lake. No matter how stable a kayak is or how it is demonstrated in a review its a different story when this kind of power is applied to a plastic boat that is only 36" wide. Usually in reviews the stability test is mis-leading because the reviewer is standing up and is rocking side to side and your not noticing that he is counter-balancing and not allowing the kayak to roll over. You could tell in your video that you didnt have time to counter-balance because you were going very fast and turning very sharply. I am seeing that sharp turns are not good when using a motorized kayak. LOL

      Uploading UA-cam short tomorrow. Folks can laugh at my expense more. Get to watch the boat circle me like a shark and clobber me in head. ALWAYS CONNECT KILL SWITCH TO YOUR PERSON. I’m thinking of getting the NT300 (tiller) model motor for a new unique plastic boat/skiff that is gonna make people drool. I have it in my truck in the parking lot. People from iCAST were stopping my truck to look at it! I have the very first and only boat likely in America. They just confirmed they have them in stock and ready to ship across USA. It is like a bass boat and saltwater skiff combined, made of HDPE, with huge hatches, and 6hp capability for less than most Hobie Kayaks.

    I'm glad nothing happened. its center of gravity is several feet above water level. so it is dangerous to turn quickly to the side. Similarly, the coming of the wave from the side is also dangerous. i also had this problem when i put the big fridge behind the kayak.

      I wasn’t used to the torque and I wasn’t used to the buttery smooth foot steering. I oversteered and didn’t respect the machine. Kinda like a crotch rocket motorcycle can be safe or dangerous in the wrong hands. At end of the day I screwed up. The motor and kayak was fun as hell while I was briefly on it. 😂

    • @KayakDIY

      There seemed to be a hole there. I would say 12-15ft. Plus murky and silt bottom. After the crash I dived but couldn’t find it. Hard to dive and hold breath well without fins. With the fins I could exert less energy and I just ran my hands through the silt trying to cover roughly 6ft spans. Took a few passes and eventually hands ran across it in the 3-4” muddy bottom. So surprised it was still filming under water 3.5hrs later. I had a 3.5hr video clip on the phone! I then airdropped all the kayak review footage to the new phone immediately. I will have kayak reviews uploading later today and throughout the week. 😊

    The German term is "Schadenfreude"...joy in someone else's mishaps...but it all ended well! What can we learn? Use a less expensive, backup camera on the water or invest in a waterproof phone bag or box? Always bring spare clothes (I watched someone dump in 6" of water once after he argued with me, trip leader, about the clothing....) and know that all kayakers, of whatever stripes, have or will do this and we all share in the heartbreaks and joys of this video. Don't even know u but ❤ from Seattle and I look forward to more

    I can not stress this enough , people need to stop putting huge horsepower on kayaks to the stern. Old Town got it right when they put the drive up front. Its much easier and more controlled to pull weight than it is to push it. You essentially pushed the rear weight to the side which is why you rolled. You shifted the weight sharply and suddenly past your center of gravity. I can turn my autopilot sideways and hit it max speed and it does not even remotely put me in a position that I feel unsafe. Having eyes on your motor the entire time to know what its doing at the moment its doing it can pay big dividends. You cant see the motor , if its behind you. If you were in the ocean , and a steering cable broke , it would slam sideways and the same thing would happen. If the motor can not be in front of me , I am not owning it.

    • @Handygrrl
      @Handygrrl Рік тому

      I learned something, thank you

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  Рік тому

      This situation was my fault, but you brought up a good point regarding if steering cable fails in the wrong area you could lose control and fall overboard. BIG thing is kill switch. At least if you do fall overboard you could reattach steering line OR paddle back to shore. Motor in front is definitely more intuitive for handling…especially when you start going beyond 0.5hp or basic trolling motors. One simple fix that would help create more control at higher speeds would be to decrease the travel of the motor so it doesn’t do as tight of turns. The tight turn capability and power put me sideways. However, at lower speeds I kinda like the tight turning. I think it comes down to getting familiar with your vessel before trying to go crazy….AND ALWAYS WEAR THE KILL SWITCH. This motor is a blast and I like the non-proprietary battery and price point of the system. I personally want the NT300 version with tiller handle. Got some microskiffs it would be fun with.

    • @Obxhatman
      @Obxhatman Рік тому

      @KayakDIY well , not going to say the unit is horrible but most kayaks come with a rudder system , the old town rudder is tight to turn and if you step on one peddle a little , you can take your foot off and it stays in that position. This is another design that old town paid attention too. You have to apply some force to get it to turn with the rudder. So there is no sudden jolt left or right. IMO , the power that thing has. If I had a rudder to steer. I would mount the motor on the front in a fixed position and then I would just steer with the peddles. That way you have more control sliding left or right. Instead of very sharp turns at high speeds. It's an interesting motor and powerful. However that power needs to be tamed.

      RVR has great secondary stability, but is a river performer and bit more nimble. Ss127 is crazy stable. I just screwed up. Would have been fine on it if I had taken an additional 30 seconds to get familiar with handling. I kinda did a full send bit too quick. 😂
