  • Join me as we take refuge in records by exploring all the self-titled debut albums in my vinyl collection! This is the first part of a two-part series, where I show 30 records that DID NOT make it into my final list. The other records - a further 30 - will be displayed and ranked in Part 2, which you can view by clicking the link below:
    • Ranking the Self-title...
Inspiration for doing this mini-series came from a video posted by ‪@AsItShouldBePodcast‬ where hosts ‪@shortsleave‬ (Paul Bertolino), ‪@djcrystalclear8169‬ (Crystal Durrant) and ‪@tommyvonvoigt5240‬ (Tommy von Voigt) ranked their fave debut albums of all time (not limited to self-titled). I decided just to focus on self-titled debut albums for the purpose of my own two vids, to see how difficult it would be to rank them!

Very well done Christian. May I say that anyone who is including 10cc in their debut album ranking is displaying a outstanding knowledge of music. You also showed some other stand-out debuts. Looking forward to part two~

Yes, I’m a huge 10cc fan and that album was very unlucky not to make my ranked final 30 coming up in Part 2. They were such a special group - pioneers in the recording studio, incredible songwriters and each member contributing a very eclectic range of musical influences.
I am also pleased to hear you found some of my other picks in this vid to be standouts too 😊
Thank you for your time and support.

Thanks Christian. Back when Chloe (remember her? ) and I first moved to Glasgow, in 1989 we purchased the Ultra Vivid Scene album with Irn-Bru bottles. In those days you got a 10p return on a bottle...so negotiated with the record store guy on the doorstep, wearing him down with our logic and stupidity...that Irn-Bru bottles were infact technically as good as money. Eventially he gave in, accepted the unorthodox but very Scottish currency being offered "Okay, go on then" the deal was shaken on. The album wasn't my choice, I had let Chloe have her want, as the whole Irn-Bru bottles as currency escapade was her idea in the first instance. I remember that the record store guy went in and got the record for us as we waited, still awkwardly outside by the door (possibly because the purchase was only a notch above shop lifting) with three carrier bags of bottles each. A few years later Chloe moved down to London along with the Ultra Vivid Scene album, having natural custody. So, I guess technically I never really owned it, not in the strictest sense. Then about ten years back she sold it, along with a third of her extensive record collection, mostly US indie (Shimmy Disc, K Records) but also Sarah Records releases and suchlike, having outgrown them, like the clothing of childhood. Although I only heard this after the fact, when Chloe mumbled something about the vinyl culling having funded six months in Japan. The thing was, not only had she entirly forgotten the circumstance of the Ultra Vivid Scene purchase, but had reimagined and presented an alternate history inwhich the whole Irn-Bru bottles incident was cast as a heroic failure, in her version the record store guy had just laughed us away, our silly English tails between our legs. Whilst it is argueable whether or not I ever owned the Ultra Vivid Scene album, for a fact, I never owned any of the other records mentioned by you today, much to my shame and embrassment. However, I did see 14 Iced Bears play live...probably, maybe, almost certainly in 1986 prehaps, definately...or alternatively 1988, where no Irn-Bru was involved, in a cramped and seedy London venue the name and location of which are both lost to the passing of the years. I do recall they were supporting The Pastels, as I shared a sentence with a youthful Stephen Pastel at the bar. The rest of the evenning and possible line up is obscured by the soupy fog of time and the vagueries of memory, but you know what they say "if you remember the 1980s...you've got too much time on your hands..." S.

@@Layla-kd4ui I do love your stories, Sean. You have a fine way with words and I enjoy the journeys your recollections - however hazy - take me on. I particularly enjoy hearing about Glasgow. Being half-Scottish myself and my father hailing from the City, I enjoy reconnecting with my Glaswegian side through your chronicles. I really enjoyed the Irn Bru story, and how a vinyl trade was eventually achieved.
I do remember Chloe and she sounds like a very interesting person - and I can only imagine what six months in Japan would have been like 🇯🇵❤️
There is no shame whatsoever in not owning - or ever owning - what I showed in this vid. I’m certain you have many precious jewels I would love to own, and your tales about the Irn Bru bottles and the 14 Iced Bears gig more than makes up for it 😉
Finally, it’s a very good thing you don’t remember 1986 all too well, for the reasons you say.
      Best wishes,
      Christian

@@TheVinylSanctuary Thank ye Christian...Chloe can be interesting, she went back to Japan for another year after that, and infact has stayed in East Asian for most of the last decade, living now in Thailand. Parted from her vinyl, which is still in London. Her lack of memory about records and events is quite shocking set against her three undergraduate degrees in three different subjects, her MA from the RCA, and her PhD in history. Although there are mitigating circumstances as to why the Scottish years are a bit blurry. In those days, in that time in Scotland, in Glasgow first then Edinburgh, I saw a band almost every week...but Chloe saw somebody play probably twice a week. I saw every band from the Batchelor Pad to Fugazi, from The Young Gods to Half Japanese, Melody Dog, My Bloody Valentine , Thee Headcoats, everything inbetween. There are more gigs I have forgotten than I remember...then there are the gigs I missed, regardless of having tickets, for whatever reason, The Fall in 1986 when the car broke down on the way, Jesus and Mary Chain supporting Primal Scream supporting in 1985 for the sake of the cost of a train ticket and £1.50 entry...the list is painfull. I believe there is a film of The Ex, Dog Faced Hermans, Dawson, and Badgewearer from around 1991, Glasgow (a gig where the bouncers on the door were truely awful and the bands appologised to the audience) part of the film, I understand was used for MTV or something, where Chloe and I are seen dancing at the front...but I have never seen it myself. S.

I do sincerely hope you enjoy the final 30 I have left to show, which made my ranking, and I always enjoy reading what you have to say.
What a fizzing, scuzzy, fuzzy and sugary sweet debut ‘The Pains of Being Pure at Heart’ is! You are correct to say it’s brilliant.
It’s also brilliant to hear your daughter is amassing her own vinyl collection, with ‘Suzanne Vega’ being an excellent addition to it in my opinion.
That gig you’re going to sounds incredible! The Psychedelic Furs AND the Mary Chain on the same bill?! Wow! You must tell me please how it goes!
I’m also really looking forward to you sharing some of your fave self-titled debut albums with me, once my Part 2 vid has landed.

Jane’s Addiction! What a special debut.
The raw energy was captured like lightning in a bottle. It’s my personal favorite by the band. Perry Farrell can’t get enough credit as far as I’m concerned.
Innovative, provocative, and fearless talent. Raymond is an adorable name for a cat! 😻
    ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ 📺
See you at Part 2. 👏

@@michelewiese48 Oh, Michele! ‘Jane’s Addiction’ was in contention right until the very very last. I swapped it out right at the end for one that made the final 30. ‘Twas the finest of margins, I can tell thee! It’s a superb album and I love ‘Pigs in Zen’, ‘I Would for You’ and the early version of ‘Jane Says’, where Perry’s voice sounds so raw! Everything you had to say about Perry/Jane’s was spot on too 👏
Yes, Raymond Reddington is my beautiful rescue cat 🐈❤️ I’ve had him seven years and he turned 14 earlier this year 😊
