Enjoyed this Chris😁 I must admit I haven’t listened to a lot of New Order apart from the Greatest Hits. I’ve asked Alexa to play “Your Silent Face” as I’m writing this and on first hearing can see what you like about it. I’ll be looking out to buy this album! Thanks again for your in-depth review. You’ll be on telly soon! Keep up the good work👍

      Hi Mike,
Lovely to hear from you and I hope all is well with the family 😊
I am really pleased that my review has prompted you to investigate ‘Power, Corruption & Lies’, and that you could recognise why I love ‘Your Silent Face’ so much upon hearing it for yourself.
It’s a truly stunning album, so please do let me know what you think of it once you have purchased a copy.
I also really appreciate the very kind comments and words of support. I feel like I’m starting to find my feet with the presentation style, so the plan is to just continue doing what I’m doing in the way I’ve been doing it up to this point.
      Best wishes,
      Chris x

    Another great review
This album needed to happen to get out of Ian’s shadow
Bernard really has fought an uphill battle his whole career with the unjust compasison
Bernard and Peters talent another other time in an other band would and is celebrated on their own
I dont know everything about N.O but this was a great album

Thank you so much, Jesse for the very kind comments and I am pleased to hear you enjoyed this latest review 😊🙏
Yes, this is a very important album indeed in New Order’s development, as it is a significant stride in the artistic direction they wished to take post-Joy Division.
It is a masterpiece and an eternal favourite for me personally. It’s wonderful to learn that you also consider it to be a great album.
      Best wishes,
      Christian

In 1983 I was working a toxic deadend job on an industrial estate in the midlands...and my workmate, who was a diehard punk primarily a Dead Kennedys and Circle Jerks fan came back from his lunch break, excited, waving a record bag "I've just found a disco record I like!" it was this album. Calling it a disco record or even a dance record seems a bit of a stretch now. Yet I guess it must be remembered that Power, Corruption and Lies, and Blue Monday, came in to being at a time when synths were mostly associated with commercial chart music...possibly The Human League and Scritti Politti...and that almost ever club before the Haçienda were still nightclubs with strict dresscodes and certainly no trainers. Slightly off topic or maybe not (speaking about the distance between musical identities between Closer and Movement) the song 'Devils and Angels' by Sheffield alt electronica combo The Passage is a tribute to Ian Curtis, and was compossed, I beleive, in answer to the lyrics of 'Heart and Soul'. Your Howard Devoto impression is impressive by the way. Thanks for this awfully enjoyable episode. S.

      Hi Sean,
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch this video and post such a great comment - sincerely appreciated 🙏
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and I am delighted your diehard punk workmate found a disco record he could get on board with. I can understand where he was coming from with that statement, given the music world he personally inhabited, but I think calling it a 'dance rock' album, as I did, is passable.
I also enjoyed reading your views on the association of synths with commercial chart music, as well as the shift in nightclub culture.
I really ought to check out The Passage much more. I love their debut album, 'Pindrop', and have it in my vinyl collection. I will definitely give 'Devils and Angels' a listen too, so thank you for the recommendation and the accompanying context.
Also, your feedback on my Howard Devoto impression was very kind. I do really enjoy mimicking singers, so you may hear others every now and again in future episodes! 😆
It also means a great deal that you found the episode to be awfully enjoyable.
      Best wishes,
      Christian

@@TheVinylSanctuary " I think calling it a 'dance rock' album, as I did, is passable" back then we were still using the terms "alternative" and "post-punk" and "pop" as a catch alls (I think it was Tony Wilson who coined the term "goth reggae" which was soon shortened to "goth")..."rock" was Status Quo and Black Sabbath, something to be distanced from, I can't even recall the term "indie" or "indie pop" being used till around 1986...so when I hear music refered to as "indie-rock" it still glitches for me as it marries two opposite threads of association. Again, at the time people didn't really know where to place New Order...and by the time of Low Life (I saw them live for the first and only time in 1985) I didn't know where to place them either. I recall at the monthly "alternative disco" in my home town the DJ would maybe play Joy Division, Caberet Volitaire, Devo (always the obvious tracks, She's Lost Control, Nag Nag Nag, Whip It)...but only Blue Monday if we pestered and bribed him, as he would say "I don't want to upset the punks"...he was the same about Jesus and Mary Chain's Upside Down a couple of years later and I stopped going...have a good weekend Christian and what ever you do "don't upset the punks..."

When I was squatting, the last year of art school in Brighton, a random ethereal Finnish girl used to come to my kitchen to drink my coffee and escape her highly strung trans housemate, who was Dick Witts, formally of The Passage. Which seemed pretty normal...Alice and Jane Fox of the Marine Girls were already on the art school lecturing staff, as was Heidi Berry overlooked superstar and erstwhile girlfriend of Pete Astor...Stereolab were spread accross the Brighton and Sussex campuses. I miss the past sometimes. When everyone was something else, everyone was or had been in a band or was an actor or artist you'd heard of and everything was still possible.

@@Layla-kd4ui These musical recollections are truly a joy to read, Sean and I thank you so much for taking the time to share them 🙏
I spent today helping out with a clean-up of my local village and tomorrow will be spent helming a Tombola at a local carnival to raise money for Cats Protection.
I will do everything in my power, as the weekend unfolds, not to upset the punks!
Wishing you a good weekend too,

@@Layla-kd4ui What a fascinating time in your life, Sean - brimming with colours, characters and great music.
I had no idea that Dick Witts was trans, so that’s very interesting. As I said in a previous post, I love the album ‘Pindrop’, so I really ought to check out The Passage, which reminds me… I will listen to the song you recommended the other day.
I often think of bygone times too, especially as I get older, and I smile at the things that made me happy 😊

Thank you, Christian. You made my Saturday afternoon 1000x better!
I do have a bone to pick with you, however! 5 8 6 is my favorite! Haha!
I love the buildup in the intro and those lyrics deeply resonate with me. “I cannot forget the follies and vices of others so soon as I ought, nor their offences against myself...My good opinion once lost is lost forever.”- Fitzwilliam Darcy ⚖️🗡️
The slowed down ending is superb.
“Your Silent Face” is also featured in the movie ‘Bones and All’ 🦴🩸
My other favorites are “We All Stand”, “Leave Me Alone”, “The Village”, and “Age Of Consent”
“Ecstacy” is probably my least favorite if pressed, but I still enjoy it!
I’m so happy you chose this album to review - your affection for it was obvious and a delight to watch and listen to.
    ❤️🥰👏 💐

      Hiya, Michele!
I am so happy to hear that you enjoyed my review, as requested by you, enough that it made your Saturday afternoon a thousand times better; however, I have to admit I feel a bit guilty that, in a review for you, my least fave track on the album is your fave (just my luck, eh?). I know that happened another time, on AISB, when we were discussing an album and my least fave on it was your fave, but I suppose it's going to happen every now and again.
We are almost always on the same page when it comes to music, so it's only inevitable that the odd difference of opinion will, sadly, rear its ugly head. It's the finest of fine margins with these songs, as explained in the vid, so '5 8 6' is one I still love on an album where all songs are loved. You are correct to say the build-up in the intro is great, and I could have spoken more about the lyrics too. A most interesting use of Mr. Darcy's famous quote, too... 🤔 Should I assume it'll take you some time to accept my commentary on '5 8 6'? I can only hope your once good opinion of me has not been lost forever! Mr. Darcy is a wonderful character and 'Pride & Prejudice' is a literary masterpiece, but my fave book of all time is 'Wuthering Heights', so I have a lot of time for Heathcliff. At least we agree on that slowed-down ending on ‘5 8 6’! 😆
Thank you for the additional info on 'Your Silent Face' being featured in 'Bones and All' - a film I have not seen 🙏
I really love all your other faves you listed, and that is fair enough if 'Ecstacy' is your least fave if pressed. As you say, you still enjoy it, as I do '5 8 6' (well, I love it in my case, just not as much as the other seven).
Thank you also for your very kind words at the end of your post, which meant a great deal 😊
I am pleased my voice held out and that my affection for this gem of an album really shone through. I am still gaining confidence with my presenting style, so to say it was a delight to watch and listen to is truly lovely feedback that I shall reflect upon to give me the confidence to keep moving forward ❤️🎶
      Best wishes,
      Christian

@@TheVinylSanctuary Oh, it takes much more than that. I’ve already forgiven you. ‘Wuthering Heights’ is a doozy. I love the movie version with Tom Hardy as Heathcliff! What a smug bastard. Thank you again for your time, and for this glowing review of an album very dear to me. 😊

    • @TheVinylSanctuary

      @@michelewiese48 Phew! 😰 That was quick! 😆
Brilliant that you rate ‘Wuthering Heights’ too! 👍🏻👍🏻 Very interesting though that you consider the character of Heathcliff to be a smug bastard. I do think he has the odd moments of smugness in the book, but only to those who have wronged him, and even then the smugness is fleeting, as a whole gamut of emotions rise to the surface.
To clarify, you were saying that Heathcliff was smug, not Tom Hardy? The film adaptation with Tom Hardy is one of the very few I haven’t actually seen. Did you enjoy it? My favourite version is with Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche. Fiennes is brilliant as Heathcliff but Binoche, as much as I’ve loved her work in many films, is miscast as Cathy.
It was a pleasure reviewing this for you, and I thank you for your time in watching the videos; supporting my journey; and posting comments 😊🙏

@@TheVinylSanctuary I think Heathcliff had some very smug moments, but so did Cathy. Neither were excellent communicators, unless you count mind games. They expected so much from each other but were still at times so harsh and unwavering. It’s a fascinating and tragic tale, and I have sympathy for both characters, but maybe as a woman, I just relate more to Cathy’s woes. I’ve only seen the Tom Hardy and Charlotte Riley version, but Ralph Fiennes is an excellent actor and I’m sure he’s wonderful in it!

@@michelewiese48 This is a very interesting take on both Cathy and Heathcliff, and I thank you sincerely for sharing it.
As I believe it to be the greatest book ever written, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your character studies 🙏
I do very much appreciate how, very naturally over time, our topics of conversation have stretched beyond music to other areas of interest. I always enjoy hearing fresh perspectives on subjects that I personally enjoy.
Ralph Fiennes is excellent in it and I rank him as one of the best Heathcliffs I have seen on screen. Timothy Dalton was excellent in the role too, but the adaptation was not as thorough as the one Fiennes appeared in.
