Another thing to mention in the first clip is the pov cyclist made a poor overtake on the other. He had no space but decided to do a close pass on that uninvolved cyclist, putting him in danger. The irony is he's complaining about being closely passed whilst closely passing the other cyclists himself.

Yep. It's the hitting the ground bit that usually hurts the most so it doesn't much matter what knocks you off your bike.

There is a reason why vehicles should not close pass a cyclist - They create a slip stream caused by being aero-dynamic which can cause a cyclist to wobble, the faster the worse the situation. A cyclist doesn't create a slipstream of the same magnitude and wont cause another rider to wobble. Same situation occurs when lorries overtake cars on motorways.

You could get a pedal or a mirror caught up in the other bike, and cycling by it’s very nature causes a wobble which if not synchronised with the other cyclist will double the closed gap. In Belgium, cyclists have way when they join the road when the cycling path they're on merges onto the highway. It's not an explicit rule, but it's because you have to give way to the right on junctions. So legally, they would be in the wrong.
And I myself do quite agree with this ruling. Cars should preferably give way to joining cycle paths. But I'm not saying you shouldn't watch out for cars as a cyclist in that instance either.

The first clip looks like the ultimate make something from a non event
Yes, the driver was close when the cycle lane ended but, similar to ours up here, the lane just ends without good warning and the ending can be ( not really an excuse though) hidden in the nearside a-pillar. However, the driver realised they wouldn’t be able to make the turn so held back and was then blocked from turning. The beep perhaps unnecessary in this instance but it wasn’t an aggressive beep in my opinion and if the driver hadn’t explained the use I would’ve actually taken it as a “Oops, sorry buddy. Didn’t realise the turn was as close as it was”

I ride 2 days a week in C London. One of the things other cyclists do that annoys (and endangers) me no end, is choosing to overtake other cyclists at the WORST POSSIBLE TIME. They so often do it at traffic lights where everybody is already bunched up in the cycle lane (and people turning both left and right at the junction) and yet STILL try to squeeze through where you could hardly get a cigarette paper between one lane and the other let alone a bike. They also LOVE to try and muscle into the people on the left of them (I always stay to the left, hugging the curb keeping out of the way) to avoid the people coming towards them. I had to shout at a woman on Tues for almost knocking me off as she tried to squeeze through between me and the people coming the opposite direction (who were also overtaking). They love to shout at motorists about 1.5 meters but often give other cyclists less than 1.5mm when passing. Today I was driving along a stretch of road with a bike lane on the left. Completely empty as I'm driving along, but there's a Lycra lout steaming down the outside of me. He passes the car in front of me as traffic slows and sweeps across the front towards the bike lane and nearly hits a mountain biker who is just trundling along minding his own business and riding responsibly. These are the kind of people who give ALL road users a bad name.

I hit a long tailback on the motorway pretty much every morning and have done for years. My strategy if you can call it that is to relax, hang back from the car in front perhaps 20 or 30 feet and travel at the average slow speed of the traffic in second gear just to ease stress and strain on my brake lights, clutch and overall sanity. I like to sip on my nice cup of tea while I am at it. This overall behaviour seems to absolutely infuriate some drivers (quite often lorry drivers) who will tailgate me trying to push me closer to the traffic in front even though they are not getting anywhere any more quickly. Some drivers also don't like the idea of me "letting the occasional driver pull in in front of me" either. They don't seem to understand that the 3rd driver is either going to pull in where he/she just has or is otherwise going to drive on and pull in somewhere ahead anyway thus making very little difference to the overall equation of time and stress. Also, it's quite strange how fast tailbacks actually travel if you slow down and let the traffic evaporate in front. People need to learn to relax in the morning not get unnecessarily wound up.

In general, I find roundabouts are especially tricky for cyclists due to cyclists having a thin profile making them hard to see as you mentioned due to A-pillar blindspots. On 1.5m, it's simply yes - we do.
My experience is that a significant % of drivers are effectively asleep, and don't look beyond the end of their bonnet. When cycling, I always have a Pass Pixi (reflective speed camera type sign) on the back of my cycle, so I'm running Schrodinger's video cameras, and it makes a big difference.
If overtaking motor vehicles need to dart anywhere to give as much space to a cycle or motorbike as they would a car, it is not a safe overtake and they should wait. That's classic "Must Get In Front".
I can see no overtakes in the first clip; there is the other cyclist on a separated cycle track, and a motorist in the carriageway alongside. It would be better with a median, of course. If it is an overtake then the motorist is overtaking through a traffic calming feature, which is frowned on by the HWC.
The painted cycle lane is a mess; they increase collisions and casualties (we have the evidence) partly because they encourage driving to the near side of the lane. It would most probably be safer without it. I'd argue that that street should perhaps be one way, and the network adjusted.
Chaponabike obviously tightens it up too much.
BTW, I like your standing jump; I'm part owner of a Crossfit gym.

@@mattwardman If you are travelling so fast that you cannot anticipate a fixed hazard, you aren't paying proper attention according to the law. That works for all road users. No-one should be swerving suddenly. Cyclists don't pass wide either, yet a car could swerve.

    • @mattwardman
      @mattwardman 6 місяців тому

@@fakecrusader I think you're missing it - in the scenario under discussion the cyclist has seen the fixed hazard and we have the 1.5m clearance to drive around it.
Motor vehicles swerve suddenly if the driver has not noticed something until the last minute, and they habitually go far faster than cycles.
Unfiortunately it is impossible to tell whether a random driver in a random vehicle will not swerve suddenly as they "should", or will even see something straight in front of their nose.
They drive into lamp posts, they drive into the front room of people's houses, they drive too fast into a setting sun when they should be at walking pace, they drive into pedestrian refuges, they drive straight through lights on red because they "do not see".
They drive into things directly in front of them - from pedestrians and cyclists right up to police vehicles in full livery with blues and twos running.
Then they lie to the police about what happened. Then they lie to the Court. Then they lie to themselves.
Vulnerable road users can't trust that, which is why we have the 1.5m rule. Fortunately people who violate it are more likely than ever to get 6 reward points to display proudly on their license, which is a very good thing.
Sorry for taking such a blunt position, but that's where I stand.

Last clip is in Woolwich. Second clip is in Gypsy Hill, London. Right near where I live and people (bikes and cars) straight line that roundabout all the time. I stick to the left hand lane when going straight ahead and people frequently try to over take me and cut in front, usually because they are pissed off with me for sticky to the 20mph limit when coming down the hill from Crystal Palace.

One thing that does cross my mind is that, no matter who is at fault, the driver of the car/van/lorry is never going to be the one getting physically hurt in bike-vehicle encounters. That invincible metal shell gives its occupants a certain privilege of invulnerability.

On the second clip, the Mercedes could be slowing as that's where the fixed speed camera zone is and the satnav may have chimed. It's only a 20 zone, within a cyclist's speed window, and it's just by the camera that Silvio overtakes (into oncoming traffic...). Once past the camera (and the zebra crossing's zigzags) the Mercedes increases speed and overtakes. Then they both catch up with the van maintaining 20.

Roundabout procedure : if you negotiate a roundabout in the outside ( right hand ) lane , you should exit in the outside ( right hand ) lane where the exit road has two lanes : this facilitates better traffic flow and it is quite correct for left turning traffic to proceed as long as they leave the other lane available to traffic exiting the roundabout when they were already in the outside lane . Changing lanes from right to left BEFORE you exit a roundabout is poor driving , you should ALWAYS exit in the same lane you negotiated the roundabout in .

301 bus is on Beresford Street - Premier Inn on opposite side of the road
First one - the first cyclist overtaking the car after it had stopped should have given a wider berth of the car, regardless as to whether the door was going to be opened or not. Driver clearly didn't look over his shoulder or even do the Dutch-reach - nightmare to sort out if he'd hit someone going past.
My thoughts on the second one - should have stayed in the left lane going around the rbt, going too fast is what leads to the scenario developing the way it does, that amount of speed has to straight line it but he didn't need to do anything after the car was in front; aside from passing the Mercedes the way he did, but to then sit behind the van that close without having any view as to what was in front.
Think both of those first two should have a look at how they ride before they end up on the tarmac.

Time for the cycling community to stand up and voice their displeasure of all these "engineered" videos. It will be an honest, careful rider who is hurt or maybe even killed when a short fused driver takes offence. I was taught to look out for all road users, and I started legally driving in 1972, when traffic was much lighter than today. Further, there were bicycles being ridden by workers going to work and children going to school, etc, and we didn't need legislation to leave safe passing distances. We had common sense and manners, something in short supply by all road users these days.

I’m a cyclist (and driver) and in that first clip I think a decent driver (which I think most people are) could have seen the cyclist making a stupid move and fix thy cyclist’s mistake and give them room. It looks like the cyclist lost it because the driver didn’t fix the cyclist’s mistake like most people usually do for him. And because he’s probably done something like that so often, he thinks it’s usual for people to fix his mistakes.

I think criticism of the 1st rider is correct, he just pulled out to do a poor overtake giving the overtaking driver no chance to adjust.
Additionally the criticism of the 2nd Rider and his behavior "after" the car pulled out on him was wrong... However, I don't think the rider was in the wrong to be on the right of the roundabout as it said straight ahead both lanes, additionally you cannot assume he didn't provide a hand signal.. the pulling out of that car was dreadful and dangerous. I don't think you can blame the cyclist for that.
There is no excuse for pulling out there if there is swiftly approaching oncoming traffic regardless of the lane. The cyclist could have been in the left hand lane but the fault and initial poor driving was from the Mercedes driver....
