I like this method of teaching. It is not something you often hear coaches talking about. When the hands are low coming down into impact it's as if your lower body automatically senses where it should be and pivots perfectly without having to think about it.
You are the Best Teacher!!! I have been watching many different golf instruction on UTUBE, but no one comes close to your instruction. I have been playing golf about 30 years, but still struggle not making solid contact. Over the course of many years, I went thru many different instructors and among them was US top 100 teacher whom I took a lesson on weekly basis which cost me a lot of money. Still, no one seems to fix my casting on top just before I make my down swing. All the information and instruction you are giving on your video are very very helpful and your instruction is very clear to understand. Thank you. I am so excited to find you and I share with my husband.. With all those countless private lessons and golf school we attended, we really didn't know what the golf swing should be like until I discovered your video by accident. I can't watch your video enough. Watching everyday learn new things daily, I cannot tell you how excited!! Sang chang.
I actually discovered this myself at the range yesterday. I was really working on my body pivot and had a few good strikes where I felt my hands really low. So I thought to myself, let me just focus on keeping my hands low and nothing else on the downswing. WOW. What a difference. My only swing thought was low hands. I came to youtube and searched "low hands downsing" and of course my favorite UA-cam instructor has multiple videos supporting this feel. This drill should really help me ingrain it into my game. I'm not even going to think about hip bump/body movement for now and just focus on low hands as it seems it's the feel I've been missing.
I stumbled upon this video while searching for where the hands should be on the downswing. Well, this certainly makes a huge difference. Crisp solid shots on line. Just raising up the hands slightly instead of keeping them low makes a big difference in the contact and direction of the shot. If I don't keep the hand low, I will end up coming up out of the shot and hitting the ball more with the hands. Thanks for the tip.
Wow, great tip here. This is something I have never thought of before I accidentally tried it out on the range today. It is strange that no instructors focus on this issue. I bet a lot of players have to high hands in both takeaway and downswing. The hand placement has direct consequence with how you swing into the ball, as you explained. Low hands retains the lag, eliminates early extension and promotes a body pivot through impact instead of flipping the hands or hitting withe the arms. I will implement this from now on. Thanks, Chris!
Chris! These Videos have helped so much. I recently broke 80 for the first time after three years of taking up the sport (had my putting been better I would have scored even lower) and a lot of credit goes to these videos. in particular this and your video names "path right hands left". One thing that really made a difference was having a stable lower body. Having a solid base to swing from allowed me to put into practice a lot of the things you have mentioned in your vids. I would encourage you to do a video on the importance of lower body stability. Thank you and keep up the great work!
This is the best illustration I have ever seen to correct my left shoulder move and position at impact and to give me insight into producing more club head speed. Thanks!
just tried this drill, to help square up my clubface on driver. and was very impressed with the results. thanks again chris for all your time and energy.
I don't watch videos from anybody whose swing I don't want to emulate. You have by far the most effortless, efficient and visually appealing swing of all the internet teaching pros. On top of that your instruction is effective, to the point and not annoying unlike some others. This video specifically is my favourite. Keep up the good work.
makes sense .. direct & to the point .. hands , shoulder & pivot explained clearly like it ! getting hands low involves elbows being closer , possible squat a la Snead shoulder rise club head down = release - pivot driven keep head behind impact & it's a great swing lots of information here
Great video Chris. Everything you demonstrate just makes perfect sense. I've not seen anybody else put this tip out there on UA-cam. This is something I've got to try as I've been chunking and thinning my irons due to casting and getting over the top. This along with your elbow close together video are bound to help me out. Thanks!
I can't begin to thank you for this video. This really helped me fix an issue I have been having with my hands. I didn't really see or feel what is was I was doing wrong till I viewed this video. Thank you for all your easy to follow instructions, and please keep up the amazing work you do!
Excellent and concise instructions/explanations Chris! Ever since I stumbled upon your videos it really has helped me understand what I've been doing wrong all these years! I appreciate the time your taking to helping those of us who are really struggling with the game!
Totally different feel during downswing. Best golf tip ever. I knew there was something that would automatically put me in the best impact position and then I found this. Thanks Chris. Changed my game and gave me back my appetite for golf😀
You couple this video with your video on right side bend and the impact position of the right arm and right shoulder down to the ball has improved my ball strike, flight, and more consistency.
A left side solo rehearsal with the left arm and then a right arm solo rehearsal then take the practice shot on the range is getting the whole swing coming together for a better ball strike.
Chris thanks so much for this tip , this just sorted out my ball striking big time and i have been hitting them soled before what i found is that my finish is so much easier and better than before , great work.
There's a killer hidden drill at 5:34: Take 3 swings with low hands and no pivot, causing the clubbed to jam 18 inches behind the ball. Then take another swing turning the left shoulder up and rotating. As a flipper, it felt like my head was a foot closer to the ball, while making great contact, and 1+ club extra distance. Thanks Chris Ryan!
Just found this video and it instantly helped my ball striking...no exaggeration! However, I can do it from last parallel...but I have trouble getting to last parallel with a full swing. This makes the drill extremely difficult to do with anything other than a static starting position at last parallel. Do you have any videos describing drills to help us get into that position with a full swing? Thanks - Chris
Another helpful vid! I can now see that when your hands get low and towards the ball, they almost seem as they are "past" the ball and the feeling to get the club to the ball before your past might encourage the cast or early flip. Once we get to the proper "low" point, what's the movement or firing of the hands supposed to do? Seems like not much time or space this low to get the hands squared up in time.
Great video Chris - So if my golf clubs were too long for me this could potentially cause a bent left arm at impact because I can't lift quick enough coming into impact?
It seems that lower hands also flatten the swing plane thus preventing too steep an angle coming down on the ball. Very good instruction by the way. I have not seen this mentioned by an instructor in a very long time. I have been playing golf 50+ years and I had forgotten about this move. I will try to emphasize this during my next practice. Thanks.
This type of tip shows sets you apart from other pro golfers in my opinion. I This tip has a nett result of me being able to keep my hands and arms in sync with body at impact and also enabled me to be more balanced into the follow through. Many thanks indeed Chris helped me out again.
This is great! when i started playing again this year i have been topping a lot of shots. I think it may be due to not getting the hands low enough for how much shoulder turn i have.
Great videos, working these out on the range. However, do you have a clip that puts "Nail the Impact ... lower hands" together with "Should you pull down from the top", and Great golf backswing drill?
Your shots look beautiful and I couldn't figure out particularly why but I think it's because of this one mostly. Great instruction. I'm always afraid of fat shots if I lower my hands. I can't wait to try this out today.
One of my swing thoughts for a while has been to come in really low and get separation of shoulder and chin as I rotate. I have never seen a coach explain this before. I also like to think of my hands being lower than where they were at the start, at impact - they won't be but that's my feel.
Hi Chris, I just tried your method and it worked wonderfully for the irons, but i struggle with pushes and poor contact for the driver with the low hands.. any advice?
This is something that few learn and, thus, few do. As a coda to his instruction, I think about keeping the hands as the lowest part of the swing at all times. If you do so, the rest of the swing seems to follow naturally.
Hi Chris. wonderful video, this one means a lot to my ball striking. i suppose the low hands is applicable to all of my irons and hybrids but can it also be used with the driver and fairway woods. I guess the answer is yes, but I want you to confirm it.
Hi Chris need some help on how to play a plugged lie on the upslope of a deep bunker ,My course has three and today was my day to land in one that has heavy sand due to rain
Chris, I'm a high handicapper who came to golf late in life and still have a zillion things wrong with my swing. I'm a persistent tinkerer and needless to say my contact is poor and inconsistent. Is this something that I should be spending time on or is it more for the better golfer?
This really clarified for me why good players some time totally fat it - in fact why Spieth fatted it with his first drop wedge shot on 12 Sunday. If your body stops turning and your right shoulder does not come up - fat city, beaver pelt, toupee results....
This is correct. He didn't mention that the back leg on back swing descends slightly and then shoves forward as club comes around causing big lag. The forward leg has crouched or squatted too, but shoots upwards as club gets to contact area and up to finish. Don't forget the squat on the back swing is like a sidearm baseball pitcher off the rubber!
Hi Thomas, in a way yes. I personally wouldn't use that analogy as in shooting a basketball there is generally no rotation, very different in the golf swing as there is in good swings rotation too. This rotation will help straighten the lead knee and help you move up away from the ground
I believe its rotation of the body. When I do this drill I feel like my hands are not flipping at all and my rotation is squaring the club face which is great for consistency.
This one worked really well for me. Struck the ball really well during my round. Question: lead shoulder comes up and left correct? Straight up tends to push the path out to the right (for a right hander).
Having a hard time understanding how you perform this if you have been told you are pulling hands down too fast in transition which are many golfers? Also struggling with the concept of how you can shallow the shaft getting the grip down so low early in transition. Some top teachers want you keeping your Hands up. Any clarification would be helpful.
I would think that you could bring your hands down on a wider arc and they could both stay higher early in the back swing but also get low enough before impact. If you bring the hands down too steep, then I could see how this move would be impossible

This is the most important feature of striking the ball and I'm surprised not more coaches describe it or spend time explaining it to golfers.
So true! The impact should be the most important part while learning the game. Golf is much easier to learn with this strategy.
Old but gold! Took this to the driving range with great success. Many thanks, Chris.

For all those wondering if this applies to hybrids, woods and the driver, I asked Chris and he replied that it applies the same for all clubs. Cheers
Thanks for getting the answer to the question that I am sure many of us had. Many thanks.
makes sense .. direct & to the point .. hands , shoulder & pivot explained clearly like it !
getting hands low involves elbows being closer , possible squat a la Snead

This seems like a major piece of the puzzle. Made the ball straight with less effort. Love it. Thanks so much!
In thirty years of struggle in playing this game I have never seen a better explanation of the lag to impact. So very well done. N

I can't believe the impact this had on my ball striking, such an easy drill and quite easy to take to the full swing, Thanks +ChrisRyanGolf !
Excellent and concise instructions/explanations Chris! Ever since I stumbled upon your videos it really has helped me understand what I've been doing wrong all these years! I appreciate the time your taking to helping those of us who are really struggling with the game!
The swing you did at 5.34 is exactly what I have been doing . Always been taught the misleading concept of hitting “down”. Thank you for insight .
I wish I knew this drill many, many years ago. Makes striking a golf ball a really satisfying experience!
Totally different feel during downswing. Best golf tip ever. I knew there was something that would automatically put me in the best impact position and then I found this. Thanks Chris. Changed my game and gave me back my appetite for golf😀
Great tip. Really helped me in initiating a better, more natural rotation. Thanks.
excellent video having had a session with you today it is now very clear how important this move is good vid great lesson thanks chris
Some of the best golf instruction I've seen on UA-cam. Only comment I have is you are never happy with your golf shots. Always fairly happy.
Thanks Dan glad you enjoy the videos, and good observation, I'll try and hit some shots that I'm really happy with ha. Thanks again
Best tip and absolutely the secret to golf swing....
Another great video and I've yet to see one that is difficult to understand. You're a terrific communicator and instructor.
Chris thanks so much for this tip , this just sorted out my ball striking big time and i have been hitting them soled before what i found is that my finish is so much easier and better than before , great work.

This makes the drill extremely difficult to do with anything other than a static starting position at last parallel. I discovered this move on my own the other day. It added 30 yards to my 7 iron shots (145-175 yards). This is the secret move, in my opinion.
Agreed
THANK U 4 TALKING ABOUT THE LEFT SHOLDER THIS IS WHERE I HAVEING TROUBLE
Perfect tip, corrected something I was fuzzy-wrong about in my own head for a while now!
Thanks for this tip. This information helped tremendously.

Good god this helped so much. Used to be hooking and topping but would hit some shots pure. Did some research and found this video. Thanks!
Great tip Chris!!really helped put consistent strikes on the mid to long irons.
+ad wall Thanks, glad the drill worked for you.
This is great! when i started playing again this year i have been topping a lot of shots. I think it may be due to not getting the hands low enough for how much shoulder turn i have.
Best video on the internet my ball striking has improved dramatically
Hi Chris, can this approach be used for both pitching and chipping?
Thank you, Chris. Tried it at once in my backyard Best video ever!!!!!!
Thank you Chris for this amazing drill. I gained 20 yards and striking consistency. BTW, most beautiful swing on youtube. Cheers from Paris
Great videos, working these out on the range. However, do you have a clip that puts "Nail the Impact ... lower hands" together with "Should you pull down from the top", and Great golf backswing drill?
great video.PGA member 50 yrs.Best video.my mentor Gardner Dickinson never revealed this move.

Great tip Chris works equally as well with hybrids and 3 wood love your videos.

Awesome tip---- Thank you Sir... Murrieta ca.
Great video,world class instructor
Hi Chris, I just tried your method and it worked wonderfully for the irons, but i struggle with pushes and poor contact for the driver with the low hands.. any advice?
Chris, love your drills, but is it better to practice on mats or turf?
wow great stuff. I wish you were here in Florida. I been having this issue. any tips on face control. I like your downswing feet movement
Hi Chris, will having low hands at the bottom also help with getting the golf swing on a better plane i.e. less steep in the downswing?
This lesson is very helpful to me for solid contact ball. but I am confusing where I have to release each club.
Best tip ever. Getting more consistent contact. But I'm pushing more shots right.
very good tip and video!
this is such a good lesson/tip you should go over this again and again and your ball striking will improve ten fold paul 5 handicap
This is a great video! Very helpful!
excellent drill
Hi Chris, great video. Is this release position the same for a driver too?
This is something that few learn and, thus, few do. As a coda to his instruction, I think about keeping the hands as the lowest part of the swing at all times. If you do so, the rest of the swing seems to follow naturally.
do you put more flex into the right leg to lower the hands
Hi Chris. wonderful video, this one means a lot to my ball striking. i suppose the low hands is applicable to all of my irons and hybrids but can it also be used with the driver and fairway woods. I guess the answer is yes, but I want you to confirm it.
sure is mate
How do you do this without throwing the club and loosing lag? In other videos you say to keep the angle in your trail elbow
Hi Chris need some help on how to play a plugged lie on the upslope of a deep bunker ,My course has three and today was my day to land in one that has heavy sand due to rain
I watch most of your videos, but found this one by accident. Eureka Moment, improved my game out of sight 😉
can you use this for driver too?
Gonna give that a try Chris. Great vids.

How do you get the grip to low point without steepening the shaft in the downswing?
Thanks a lot:)) one of the best tips!
When you start to move the face to square while the handle is going up. When do you square up the face?

when you go up are you pushing off the ground with left foot like you would if you were going to jump and shoot a basketball?

Is it the same action with a driver?
Thank you Sir....
Should I also be doing this when I hit my driver?

Finally I think this is the missing piece to my golf swing. I have been ballooning my shots and realised my hands were to high at impact.
How will this help you square the club face for centre contact?
I believe its rotation of the body. When I do this drill I feel like my hands are not flipping at all and my rotation is squaring the club face which is great for consistency.
If I were in your area, I would so go to your clinic.
This one worked really well for me. Struck the ball really well during my round. Question: lead shoulder comes up and left correct? Straight up tends to push the path out to the right (for a right hander).
Correct, up and left as this will as you say help keep the path neutral.
Hi chris I think this might be the reason why my ball flight is really high. My 6 iron is about 160 yards so I lose a lot of distance
Although my strikes are relatively good
More course vlog!!
