After 30 years this song still stands the test of time as the finest example of the merging of Indian and Western pop music. People forget just what Monsoon achieved with this song, the like had not been heard or tried since the Beatles. It was massive hit in Britain.
Such a hauntingly beautiful tune with the Indian influence. I'm so sad to learn that Sheila Chandra is now practically unable to speak, let alone sing, because she now has burning mouth syndrome (BMS). So sad we'll never hear her wonderful voice again. I hope she finds peace wherever she is. I hope this song reminds people of how wonderful her voice was.
This song and the lovely Sheila blew away barriers in the BEST possible way. It was like loctite between cultures, someone here mentioned that it was years ahead of its time, and I agree. But look now at how many people watch Bollywood and enjoy the music and the sheer Colour and artistry of it all. I LOVED this song from the minute I heard it. I collected 12 inch singles at the time, and when I bought this, I was blown away again, it gripped me to my core. It was my most played record of all time. I think she may have been in Grange Hill (a school drama) at the time, but my memory is dusty.
After such a long period of time I'm playing the exotic melodies on my Strat of this Indian major pentatonic along with Sheila and her band, and I'm crying tears like an ocean. This song is timeless. I know this beautiful woman and great singer is retired and very ill and wish her much strength!
Sadly if it was released today a army of SJW 's would descend criticizing every aspect of this epic song in 1982 it had a fair hearing to day it would be condemned out right
Registering July 2024 ,and a timeless masterpiece, still, flaunting with the intricate melodies with beautiful rhythm ,an evergreen,if ever there was a candidate
1982,I got a copy from revolver across from Woolworths, stones through from broadmarsh. This 12inch version. And at the same time. Angelic upstarts album. Two million voices, what a mix lol
I was 17 years old when I heared this song for the first time way back in 1982 and it has mesmorised me ever since. It is even more remarkable when you realise that Sheila Chandra was only 16 years old, when the song was recorded.
+Guido Harmeling ....Snap! I was 17 also. I heard it in a record shop and I went straight over to the counter and bought it. I have many records but only two singles and this is one of them. BTW happy 50th !
+evildrome Hi, it´s nice to hear that more people appriciate the different kinds of music and their different origins. If we would all be the same, what a boaring world it would be ! ( And thank you for your felicitations).
I think my favourite moment in this video is when the clueless show producers get a guy to walk some camels onto set, and the guy playing keyboard looks around like 'WTF'. 😀 Still a bangin' track mind, sounds like it was recorded yesterday. ❤❤
Anyone in the UK remember Dial A Disc in the 80s. You called a number and they played a song on repeat all day. I remember secretly calling all day to listen to this! Thank God there were no itemised bills back then!
I was in Australia when this came out...heard it once...and then had to order the album....took 6 weeks before I got my hands on it.....god they were the days lol :-)
I'm in Australia, heard this on the radio in 1982 and spent 18 months tracking it down. Eventually bought the album in Belgium and loved it ever since. Every track is GOLD!
I first heard Sheila back in the 80's and she BLEW ME AWAY. This is the first time that I have seen a video of her. The OTHER version, the more traditional one, sounds like a timeless song. Such Spiritual and physical longing. She can't sing anymore, "burning mouth syndrome". If you like her maybe you know about the middle eastern singer from Yemen, Ofra Haza. Very similar, almost complementary. Ofra, a Yemenese Jew, sadly died when she was still in her prime. Check her out. God bless them both, and us all.
Mesmerising and really catches the essence of India... And this was also a song that broke the mold in the early 80s for showcasing Indian style music in the UK charts, in a way that few songs before or since have.
I used some of her vocals for my trance song and fits very well, hope you like it ua-cam.com/video/rOLkGO67TyQ/v-deo.html I have a Prodigy cover too LOL
I was in love with this girl. So much I just noticed she can dance. Lol😁. Shame lost her voice. She and monsoon would of been on top for much longer. Love there music
So obscure, not heard very often.this needs to be played more on radio.cant say under rated as it is never played on British channels.people don't know what there missing coz they have never experienced it.

Loved and love this!
I bought this. What a breath of fresh air. ♥️
And now, 40 years later, it’s still brilliant!
Absolutely
Magnificent.

Still loving it in 2024
So do I !
She is the most beautiful girl I think I had ever seen in 1982. I was in love with her then - and still am now! Xx
Beautifully simple simply beautiful
Exactly the same with me! I was 17 in 1982 and in love with Sheila Chandra :)

@davie ??
Yes me too thought she is beautiful and probably still is, if I remember she was about 16 when she sang thus great song.
A timeless classic I play this video often and it is still fresh Lovely voice and the Sitar is excellent Should be re-released
I remember this at the time playing on Radio 1 in the U.K, I was only 4. One of the forgotten gems of the 80s.
Forgotten gem that never gets played on any 80s stations. I can remember it very well even though I was 4 going on 5 in 1982.
For 1982, this tune is ahead of its time. If this was released 15 yrs later, would've been a huge hit
Sadly if it was released today a army of SJW 's would descend criticizing every aspect of this epic song in 1982 it had a fair hearing to day it would be condemned out right
Matthew Rowe Sir I'm afraid you are correct. It's sad because it is a damn good pop record.
Good track, no doubt
it was a No. 1 Hit in Europe. Peter Gabriel may have helped that a bit with REALWORD
decker37 absolutely correct !!!
One of the many songs which stamps "Greatness" on the '80s
This is brilliant! I'd forgotten about this song, then heard it again on the radio today. So glad I found it again!
Sheila Chandra - Goddess ❤
Sheila also did some backing vocals for The Prodigy's first version of Smack my bitch up!
@@Screwy9758I didn’t. They sampled them illegally.
A much underplayed masterpiece.
What a pity nobody hasn't get the idea to make a remix of this song. Sitar is a lovely magical music instrument 🎶❤️❤️❤️
They did 2002
I'm also love the sitar sound !
This song takes me away somewhere special
Like a magical place ✨️
Weird that is only was a hit in the UK, Ireland, Australia and the Netherlands. A classic.
Beautiful song fabulous dancer
First time I heard this song was on blue Peter in 1982 and still love it

I used to really fancy this singer. And I still do she’s still very beautiful 😍 😊
This is brilliant!
This should get a re-release. Such a classic track in 2020.
True, man. Cheers from Japan.

From the days when it was this and something or other East in the BBC 2 backwaters. God this sounds so good. Hasn't dated. ♥️

+evildrome and Guido...double-snap!!. I too was 17 in 1982 and loved this then and ever since!!.Plus the great follow up "Shakti".
+steve radford Wow... there's obviously something about being born in 1965 and this song...
so it would seem!
41 Years! Evergreen! 🎧
I remember this from way back when. One of my favourites from the 80's. Sheila Chandra and Monsoon. Thanks for the Extended Version :)
I think my favourite moment in this video is when the clueless show producers get a guy to walk some camels onto set, and the guy playing keyboard looks around like 'WTF'. 😀 Still a bangin' track mind, sounds like it was recorded yesterday. ❤❤
I've just ordered a beef vindaloo, a garlic naan and a cricket tour of India in appreciation
Awesome!! After so many years I am so happy I found this tonight it's better than I remember - wow!!
Love this song so much,so sad to read about Sheila,s voice. She has a voice in a million.
1982 was a awesome year for music lovers
Yeah it was with Centrefold and Go wild in the country where sex in the grass is absolutely free

A classic 80's pop gem. Never gets old and still sounds great

Just how timeless is this song!!!! - 32 years old by god, & could be released as a quirky track today!
THANK YOU FOR THE UPLOAD, MANY MANY THANKS. MAY YOUR LIFE BE BLESSED A MILLION TIMES, YOU ARE A GOD AMONGST US🥰😍🤩😁🐉
Amazing song i bought it when at school, and played it at my birthday party, i was way ahead of my time LOL
So you bought it when you heard it on the radio/and or saw it on TOTP - like lots of us schoolkids. Not really ahead of your time then.
Still makes my hairs stand on end even after 37 years.
That only shows how impressive this song is !
This song blew me away when I first heard it in April 1982 and it still does today. Such a wonderful voice and a brilliant musical arrangement.
I feel the same 😁
You and me both bro and now 57 years young 😁
Yes
Great track, I believe that the singer was in Grange Hill, a lovely blast from the past and very well remixed.
Wow this is the one I danced to way back. I was there and it was amazing 80s ❤️
One of the best songs EVER?
Agreed
First heard on KZEW Dallas Texas in 1983. George Gimark 's Rock and Roll Alternative show.
Have two copies of this record/cd. Thanks
Boaizaton2.
This track has to contain every indian instrument I've ever heard and loved ,,,,,,most importantly,
The Sitar
Just brilliant
Xxx

These guys are tremendous. Their version of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" is head and shoulders above most of the Beatles covers ever done.
What a delightfully over the top video and a timeless classic song. Irresistible!!!
From an age when it all worked and everyone got on with each other ❤️
I still have the original 7” vinyl from the time of its release! Still magical 🥰
Me too 💜
I have loved this song since I was a teenager. It encourages me and sorts my head out. Also a great way of getting to work when you're late😎
Sheila Chandra , has a beautiful voice .her sari is gorgeous. X
Love the sound of the Sitar.
I've loved this song since it was first released.
This remix is perfection.
You can't beat an extended remix especially when it's this good.
Excruciatingly brilliant.
Amazing singing and orchestration! Fantastic!!!
Beautiful, after all these years.
Mesmerising and really catches the essence of India...
And this was also a song that broke the mold in the early 80s for showcasing Indian style music in the UK charts, in a way that few songs before or since have.
Beautiful and sublime.
This is my first time hearing this.
THANK YOU GOD!!!
Amazing, the fluid rhythm she moves with.

Even if this was released today, I still thank that it would be a big hit, the video notwithstanding.

The version is much entertaining . Beat improved . Cover of the 12" is different to mine.
That 's the fun of a record collector !
Stunning track.
This was groundbreaking in terms of commercial success. Adored it. Nothing like it in those days.
