+Tokiofritz I AGREE 100%!! Not only does this deserve classic tracks status, this deserves international classic track status! This recording has rocked just about every nation there is on this planet! This recording is just as hot and fresh today as was back when it first came out in 1982!! Sheila Chandra was just incredible! She was my first true exposure to the music of India, and I now have right at 100 cds from India! she is personally responsible for me falling in love with all the music of India! Thanks for posting you comment, Tokiofritz! Love and greetings from Oklahoma, USA!
As a Brit. Hearing Monsoon on TOTP and seeing Shelia on Grange Hill as a young guy....was and still is magical.... as an 70'ish turning 80'ish child..... fond memories, and Shelia Chandra (Monsoon) was one of them. Growing up in a turbulent UK the Indian communityl has a special place in our hearts.
Good question. If memory serves, I think it was 'Greatest Hits' radio station, and someone listed some favourite songs of theirs from a certain year and this was on their list.@@cosmic4795
She's the most beautiful thing ever. I drove the highways of Saudi Arabia listening to her sing this back 10 years ago or more and never knew the beautiful woman behind the music. It kept me company when I was far from home and driving to some drilling rig in the middle of nowhere. God bless Sheila Chandra
I’ll never forget hearing and seeing Sheila Chandra sing this song in 1982. Fell completely in love with her & the song. One THE best songs of the 80s & always on my playlist.
I was 15 when this was released and was into The Jam, Two Tone and even at bit of heavy metaI. but this is still one of my favourite songs from back then. Plus I thought Shelia was stunning.
I was 17 years old when this record appeared and the song has mesmerized me ever since. It´s even more remarkable when you realise that Sheila Chandra was only 16 years old, when the record was recorded. It sparked my interest for Asia and it´s various cultures.
There are some songs of the past which will never be forgotten, and this is one of them! As was mentioned before, a very mesmerizing song indeed. I enjoy every moment of the song as it makes me so chilled out with Chandra's amazing voice, but my favorite bit is the instrumental crescendo piece starting from 2:32 to 2:54 Wow, I always get goosebumps listening to that lol :)
I have always loved this song and the performance. I remember watching this as a very young child and loved it then and now; feels nostalgic when seeing and hearing the song again. Sad to hear about Sheila's condition. Ever so timeless.
Beautiful, hypnotic song..... Steve Coe, who co-wrote the song, also co-wrote Laura Brannigan's hit "Shattered Glass". When he was a teenager he was in a British band in Blackpool called Complex. Love the interconnected web of the music world.
My friend had this on a tape with the art of noise first album on the flip side , so now of course one group makes me think of the other. Great album shame they never got as big as they should of.
@@olafbigandglad There’s plenty of old songs played on the Radio, just listen to Smooth or Greatest Hits Radio or Gold or Boom. As for not hearing it when it was in the charts, i remember hearing this everyday on the way to and from School on either Radio 1 or my local ILR station (Radio Tees). So it was played.
@@olafbigandgladit’s played on Xfinity Soundscape music channel B but not thisb version. Another one I love love the version on Xfinity cable music station it’s so beautiful I prefer it but this is good also
Jakatta did a nice version a decade ago. There’s a slow version of Shiela Chandra at a festival. Really moving in the light of her being unable to sing or speak now.
Still an awesome tune, even to this day, and totally under-rated - it's such a travesty that she/they never went on to bigger and better things (classic 'one-hit wonders', like many other greats!).......
I did go on to have a solo career in World Music - with Real World Records among others. See my bio on their site here realworldrecords.com/artists/sheila-chandra/
Sheila Chandra the amazing singer for Monsoon (Ever so lonely, etc) tragically is now effectively mute!! Following voice problems, Sheila returned to live performances for a short while in 2007, after a gap of 14 years, giving concerts around the world with WOMAD and other festivals. She also featured on the first 'Imagined Village' album in that year, and toured the UK with them. In 2010 she signed her first book to Vermilion (Random House) entitled 'Banish Clutter Forever - How the toothbrush principle will change your life'. Unfortunately this innovative artist's voice has continued to deteriorate. In 2010 Sheila developed 'Burnt Mouth Syndrome' (for which there is no known cause or cure) and now experiences long-lasting neurological pain triggered by speaking. Singing is completely out of the question. She is effectively mute, and communicates in person largely through handwritten notes and very basic sign language. She says she considers the trilogy she made for Real World to be the best work of her musical career.
Barr Coad : If God exists, how could he shut down such a beautiful voice, I wish all those comments that randomly bring God or Jesus would be removed when irrelevant to the video. If you want to preach your ideas, go and do it in church, where people actually give a flying fuck towhat you are babbling about.
Beautiful vocal melody beautifully delivered. Plus the instrumentatation is nice. Loved it when it came out, but hadn't heard this song in many years till someone re-introduced me to it today. This song puts anything I've heard from the Lanas, Rhiannas, Katys, Lordes, & Adeles of the world to shame, imo. The singers today deemed "Queens of pop music" mostly bore, disappoint, or irritate me, unfortunately. Is it me, or is the state of popular music in a sad state nowadays? And the artists I do like today don't get nearly the recognition they deserve.
I'm in full agreement with you Hermesacat. And I must add that this lady is utterly , utterly beautiful. I fell hopelessly in love with her as a teenage lad when this track came out..
There is another extended version on you tube where they are on sand with live camels! I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I hoped it was some kind of satire as there is a bloke in a white suit too. Freaky.
@@armandvezier1900 Yes I know. The string was not pressed when playing just 'glided' over the fret for position. I used to know a very good Dilruba player from Mumbai, Vinayak Vora. He also played Tar Shennai. ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=Vinak+Vora+Dilruba

You're a man of great taste, Mark! Sheila's voice is timeless.
YES IT IS! Her voice will always remain one of my all time favorites!! She was and still is a true superstar!
Absolutely!
Unfortunately way ahead of it's time except for Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club. Sheila never did break out of the one hit wonder mould.
