When 16-year-old Wayne Rooney stepped off the bench for Everton against an Arsenal side unbeaten in 30 Premier League games, not many outside of Merseyside had heard of him. I will never forget this game and never forget where I was with my brother and mother on holiday screaming and shouting when rooney scored and knocking our drinks over. I was a few months younger than Rooney and I remember telling the barman that Rooney was the same age as me and he looked at me like I was a child compared to rooney who looked like a man in his mid 20s haha. great times. A truly iconic moment in football and in sport. It was the beginning of an incredible career. He went on to break many more records along the way after this. I remember being at a pre season game at goodison earlier in that season against some Spanish side and rooney took the same shot from the same position and it just skimmed the top of the bar and went over. It was a sign of things to come. Then I went to the first game of the season against Spurs where he set up Pembo for a goal and just smashed one over the bar himself late on in the game. Such an exciting talent. So glad I got to witness it but such a shame that he never truly lived up to his true potential, I think it was the broken foot in the euros against Portugal and then the broken foot again against Chelsea which did the damage. He seemed to lose a yard of pace and never ran at players like he used to. He should have been up there with Ronaldo and Messi with the natural talent he had, he just didn't look after his body like a true professional. He was the Ricky Hatton of football but Ronaldo is the Maywether of football, he lives it and breathes it.

      Ronaldo and messi from 16 to 19 weren't as good as Rooney was at that age, I always thought Rooney wouldn't improve massively because he was world class as soon as he came on the scene

    Everton FC, please show the full match of this season at home against Bolton or Blackburn. They were two of Rooneys greatest ever performances and two of the greatest performances i have ever seen from any player. He showed shades of Maradona in those games. Let the world see what we got to see in those early games.

    Got to give Moyes his credit, he came in and changed the mindset from a club that was ebbing away (a bit like now) to a really hard nosed competitive team, the fans fed off that heart and endeavour.
    Just a shame we fell short a few times such as the 2008 League Cup Semis and the 2009 FA Cup Final.
    Just short of that little bit extra added financial muscle back then.
    If only this team had half the passion of 2002/03

    Rooney and Jeffers on the pitch together, both Everton prodigies, both went to De la sale school together in croxteth, both had their England debuts together a few months after this game with Jeffers scoring. Jeffers just never lived up to the hype though as the original fox in the box. Both ended up back at Everton together with Jeffers coaching the youth team and Rooney playing for Everton. Sometimes things go full circle.

      No other manager has pulled up trees either since Moyes left Utd. Moyes was the best thing to happen to Everton in decades. We were relegation fodder for years until he turned the ship around with no money and had us fighting for European places every season.

      @@kingarthurusatenniscoach1415 It doesn't matter if Rooney didn't get on with Moyes. What matters is the results the manager got and did he get the best out of his players. Clearly you have proven my point for me. You admit Rooney was class at Everton when Moyes was his manager. So clearly Moyes got the best out of him. And then funny enough when Moyes went to man utd Rooney had a great run of form. Rooney may not have got on well with Moyes but Rooney admits he was a nightmare to manage back then. Rooney apologized to Moyes for his behaviour and for what he said about him in his book. I think Rooney now in his older years respects Moyes and understands that he wanted what was best for him and the club.

    • @bieituns
      @bieituns 2 роки тому

      @@kingarthurusatenniscoach1415And by the way, no one gave more chances to youth players than Moyes. Both Rooney and Vaughan broke the youngest PL goal scoring record under Moyes. Baxter became the youngest ever Everton player. Anichebe one of the youngest to score for Everton in Europe. Rodwell the youngest to play for Everton in Europe. Notice all these mediocre players over achieved under Moyes. Hardly any players went on to bigger and better things after Moyes apart from Rooney but you admit Rooney still under achieved while at man utd. Moyes punched well above his weight while at Everton and west ham the last couple of seasons. Moyes is an excellent manager and arguably pound for pound the best manager in the league. Top managers like Ancheloti, benitez could not do what Moyes was able to do even though they had more money to spend or had better players.
