look at how Adams played after giggs' goal. he was trying desperately to rally his team, to bring his team back. He did so many forward runs as a defender. went for every set piece. and then at the end you can see them congratulating Giggs. I think Giggs said Adams was waiting out of our dressing room when he finally managed to get off the pitch, to congratulate him on the goal. such a classy player. utmost respect to him.
Things people should learn from this: - This United team is miles ahead of the current Liverpool team its often compared to. Even this arsenal is better than current Liverpool. - A lot of players were diving back then as well, its not a new thing. - The game was more of a contact sport with more crunching tackles and rougher play. - Roy Keane was much more than just a loud mouthed madman that the other clubs' fans would have you believe.
I agree w all of ur points except the first as a united fan i hate 2 say it but the premier leagues level has drastically improved technically over the last 20 years and imo citys centuries and liverpools team from last yr ( they were better last yr imo) would beat the 99 team i do think the 08 team would edge them tho
This Liverpool team has probably scored more conceded less and won more games. Man Utd and Liverpool can only play twice. Can the other 18 teams in 1999 hold this Liverpool team back? No!
Roy keanes 10 yard passes forward were underrated. For a defensive midfielder he always looked to pass it forward into the strikers. Just look at everytime he gets it its most of the time a risky forward pass.
1999.........the greatest year for English and European football. And Alan Hansen said "you'll never win anything with kids". Those "kids" proved the world that you do not need to spend to develop a great team........you just develop a great team from scratch!
Best goal I've never seen it's my favourite goal of all time, yes that goal by Ole was happiest goal ever, but Giggs goal against Arsenal is the best ever!
What a game! Both teams pushing forward every chance they get. Not afraid of losing possession because they were confident of getting it back. Not like now, passing sideways for ages.
If the treble could have been contained to one match, that you could look at and say this won us the treble. This is it, we truly started to believe the treble was possible after this incredible match and the confidence it gave us pushed us on to the do the unthinkable. Not overlooking other pivotal matches leading up to the finals, i.e. liverpool, tottenham, juventus, etc, this was a cut above the rest.
The thing I love most about Beckham’s goal is the one two between him and sherringham. The way he holds it up against Adams, and then Petit comes flying in and sherringham just passes it to becks as cool as you like with the outside of his foot. Draws in the tackle and then passes to his teammate. Beautiful bit of play
This Arsenal team was the best Arsenal team in the Premier League era. They were the defending league champions from 98. They thumped United the year before. The defence was practically the back 5 of England. The midfield of Petit and Viera just won the World Cup in 98, basically the most powerful midfield in the the world. Arsenal had more World Cup winners than the rest of EPL combined. Anelka, Overmars and Denis Bergkamp were world class players, excellent both in the EPL and internationally. By contrast, no Man Utd players, bar Schmeichel, ever won anything internationally. This Arsenal team were harder to beat than Juventus in Turin and Bayern in Nou Camp. They really turned it on for United. There was real fear when playing against this Arsenal team. It took a replay and extra time, the captain’s sending off, last minute penalty save, an impossible goal against the the meanest defence in the land to beat this Arsenal team. I always thought this was the most important game of the 98/99 season. After this win, always felt that we could win it all, and we did. Giggs goal was the only time lost control and celebrated a United goal in a pub full of Liverpool fans in Liverpool.

As an Arsenal fan United deserved to win this. The chances United had its lucky Yorke and Cole weren't playing. As for Arsenal ive never seen them play so many misplaced passes. The occasion obviously unsettled/overwhelmed some players. Ljungberg was non existent, Parlour ineffectual misplacing passes, Anelka couldn't hold the ball up for toffee in this game either. This is where this Arsenal team needed someone like Pires, Henry, Cole. They were just too narrow playing with two DMF and the wide men didn't turn up. I don't really like United but I always respected the way they attacked. They could pin teams in their own half bombarding them with crosses, runners, shots. They had a diverse way of attacking. They could score from headers to. I think them winning the treble this year was obviously down to their squad depth in this period. When you can drop Cole and Yorke, and still have Sheringham and Solksjaer.
Looking back what makes this result more impressive is that this Arsenal team were absolutely terrifying. They had size, speed, skill and power. They were faster, bigger and stronger than this Utd team but in the end Utd/Fergie just had more heart.
Considering the magnitude of the game and the stage of the season, for me, this is the best game of football I've ever seen: 10 men, a saved penalty in stoppage time, and then Giggsy's goal.
