These are the supposed first Federation Mobile Suit so as you can see they don't have the fire power to pierce the armor of a Bugu also they were developed during the time when the Federation view Mobile Suit as inferior to ships and Mobile Armor so they have no close quarter combat ability due to only being made with three fingers on the hand. The armament is also lacking as the rounds were too low caliber to pierce the Bugu's armor and these are Bugu we're talking about the prototype of the Zaku series mobile suit.

Externally it’s obvious gundam authors have a glory boner for Zeon. UC Gundam has an habit of giving excuses for all good guys, but the protagonist of the show and aces to be incompetent no matter what and giving Zeon forces or whatever version of them, excuses to ultra competent. Gundam doesn’t show the Federation to be on a level of nihilisticly corrupt as Russia, which seems to be the only way that consistently not learning from failures that exist in every single federation depiction no matter the era. Plus stuff is somewhat inconsistent side to side within the laws of the story, such as with Zeon in thunderbolt using child soldiers despite also having the mass causalities that the federation did.
Well the Guncannon Early type was classified as an "MBT". It may actually be a fun way of the writers showing what a "realistic mecha" would move like without the magic power sources.
I am still confused why the Guncannon First Type is classified as a MBT (Main Battle Tank). It would make more sense if the Guntank was an MBT, but it is classified by simply "Tank", according to the Gundam Fandom.
Yeah irl I can't see how a MS can be effective in modern warfare, let alone how we can manufacture one considering the current available composite materials. Sure shooting 120mm as quick as an assault rifle sounds good but you are a real big target in the middle of battleground. Exoframes like the ones from Obsolete might be the most realistic approach, but still not effective. But for peak fiction real robots I prefer Muv Luv lol

Just a reminder on the first day of the 2nd World War, Erich Hartmann the best German ace was shot down by poles. I think having Char or Ramba shot down would've been better
its bit ridicilous, that saturation attack should have enough blast area damage to at least gives some fatal damage to zaku 1 because zaku 1 armor arent that good. but they arent even scratch.
I understand that it's anime logic, but this scene makes no sense to me. The Guncannon has a 240mm low-recoil cannon on its shoulder. For reference, most modern tanks use a 120mm or 130mm gun, the current US primary artillery piece the M777, is 155mm. These machines are carrying high velocity WW1 siege howitzers on their shoulders with shells that are packed to the brim with explosives, and they don't even scratch these Zaku 1s, which are armored with high-tensile steel. These Guncannons should be made of similar stuff, and they are easily destroyed as any other mobile suit would be, but the Zakus are completely invincible. They could have made it much more interesting by having the Zakus fight better in hand-to-hand combat (as they could) or predict the movements of the other pilots instead, and even get damaged by the Guncannons which had them way outclassed in terms of firepower and volume of fire. TL;DR I wished it was more realistic.
Plot armor is the biggest problem with Gundam in general, it is a shame fights are almost never actually realistic despite the anime being a "real robot" franchise.
If even one Zaku I had its arm blown to smithereens and a Guncannon getting even one victory over a Zaku I, it would be a little bit more realistic, but no, they have to be completely invincible and destroy the Guncannons swiftly with zero issues. I get it, the animation studio doesn't want the Black Tri Stars and Ramba Ral to die, but they could've just have one of the Tri Stars survive their mobile suit getting destroyed and bingo, none of the zeons are dead and si now more realistic
The real reason the battle was so one sided was because the Guncannons were classified as tanks and didn't have anywhere near the mobility or controls to allow for high speed movement and targetting, which is why they're acting so clunky and unresponsive. This was before the Feds started to look into the AMBAC system while Zeon was already well into it with their mobile suit designs. However none of this is mentioned in the OVA which makes the failure of Iron Cavalry here make absolutely no sense. I think the idea wasn't so much that the Zakus were tanking the shots, but that the guncannons weren't hitting them at all. Again, the anime just completely forgot about this point. I had to dig through four wiki pages to find some semblance of an answer as to why Tem Ray was screaming "THIS ISN'T A MOBILE SUIT" at the thing.

It's a part of why the Zakus and Bugu were so much faster. Though, MAHQ mistakenly states them as having fusion engines, but MAHQ also mistakenly claims Balls had fusion engines too.
The fact that the Guncans got this flatlined in their debut is ridiculous. Should they have won the fight? No. Should they have at least critically damaged at least ONE of the Zaku 1s if not more, even in that opening barrage alone? Yes. 240mm vs anything should at least do some damage

to put into perspective just how fucking dumb this is, a normal 18 year old was able to take out multiple Zaku IIs with a Guncannon far more efficiently than a whole fucking squad of trained adult pilots.

To be fair, Zeon had mobile suits before federation, and so had more ace pilots, the gun cannon was the first bipedal federation suit, and these judging by the hands (which are claws) and the single cannon, plus machine guns, the first fully completed gun cannon was the first ever mobile suit to have a beam rifle (first beam weapon of the one year war) then these gun cannons are obviously hastily cobbled together prototypes with new pilots, before this the closest they had was the gun tank (arguably not really a mobile suit)
not to mention, that these early GunCannons variants were considered by the Federation to be "state of the art" and equivalent match to the Zaku 1 and the Mobile Worker MS that Zeon had been using in 1v1 melee combat drills up to this engagement, using these very same pilots i must add. meanwhile the best these Federation pilots got for skill testing was stationary target practice and relay race computer simulations for movement control.

But the drastic power creep or unashamed power fantasies of some recent entries (Destiny, 00, G-Reco, Build series [so many 00 wankers]) though entertaining, soured the feeling a bit. A good return to form was IBO, Origin, and WFM, a careful balance of mecha parody (no OP curb-stomps here, victories are earned as much as they are pyrrhic, no one is safe), drama/action thriller intrigue, and worldbuilding carefully weaved in games of chess played by some terrifying masterminds pulling the strings.

If I was the pilot that was running from the Zaku with the axe- I’d rather try to punch and then try to reload my cannon fast in an attempt to kill him. If it doesn’t work, I at least bought the pilots running away time if I at least land the punch.
Imagine how ass it was to try and get the MS to punch using conventional fixed-wing aircraft control inputs because back that early in development, controls be damned, they just stuck a fighter cockpit inside the waist and called it a day. Imagine trying to compete with zeonic suits that have intuitive control designed specifically for MS while you're trying to react by controlling limbs in three dimensions using control schemes designed for two dimensional flight control surface operation.

この時の旧ザクはもう自由度の高い接近格闘戦が出来るんだよな。近接戦闘用のヒートホークで滅多切り。ジェットストリームアタックみたいな連携攻撃も出来てる。あと装甲の硬さと機動性の高さ。やっぱザクは頑丈。開戦当初で連邦を圧倒出来たのも頷ける。
連邦はガンキャノンのプロトタイプがやっと。まさにやられメカ。攻撃はショルダーキャノンとマシンガンの飛び道具だけ。実戦になればフォーメーションもグダグダでパイロットの練度も低い。
ここから近接から中長距離をオールラウンドにこなし状況に合わせて装備も変更できるRX-78を開発するって連邦の開発陣の飛躍はすごいと思う。そしてガンダムとアムロの組み合わせはまさに奇跡の凶悪さだ。

勝負にならん
むしろこういった戦闘で飛び道具のみではMS戦で不利になるパターンもある、と学習したに一票。こちらの史実でもミサイル万能論などを覆したのは大抵実戦の教訓だった
