Woman Attempts to Steal Using a Stroller at Hoboken ShopRite

- Around 9:30 PM on May 14, 2024, Officers Jason Montalvo and Ramon Calderon with the Hoboken Police Department responded to a report of a shoplifting at ShopRite on 900 Madison Street. Officer Montalvo first entered the store around 9:32 PM and walked upstairs to the loss prevention office. In the loss prevention office, he met with the loss prevention officer as well as the alleged shoplifter, who was identified as 23-year-old Anyi Calderon.
The loss prevention officer informed the officers that he saw the woman attempt to leave the store while concealing $205.35 worth of unpaid items. Based on the value of the items she had stolen, the store decided to press charges against her. Officer Calderon placed Anyi under arrest for shoplifting. She was handcuffed and escorted to the patrol car, and her stroller was transported in a separate police car.
Anyi was transported to the Hoboken Police Department by Officer Montalvo for further processing. At police HQ, she was searched in more detail by Officer Rose Kanan. She was charged with shoplifting under 2C:20-11B(2) and released pending her court appearance.

The summary of events was based on records that are “open to public view through open access to public records” as defined in the Salzano case. In Ramos v. Flowers, 429 N.J. Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.
I'm going to NJ this weekend and attempted to stop by the Hoboken ShopRite as a tourist stop. Thanks to these videos, they are probably the most well-known place in Hoboken.
