German here: Keeping space between the to leftmost lanes in a traffic jam is entirely purposed to let emergency vehicles pass.
Bikes use it as well, but especially on hot days this is commonly considered okay because they are getting really hot in their clothes, with a hot machine right under them. Without the airflow they might overheat and suffer health issues.

@@Todbrecher Actually at least since the last update on the regarding laws it is absolutely forebidden to use the Emergency Lane for any trafic, except rescue, police and so on. In the case bikers are getting into trouble due to weather they are recommended by the police to use the side strip of the road with slow speed to get to a place with shaddow to cool down or leave the Autobahn. But this is also only a recommendation. As far as I know there were no cases at court so far for bikers using the side lane right to the street since the last law update. Using the rescue lane is an absolute no-go and will const a lot of fine.

So at 8:47 you guys mentioned the gap between the cars. This gap is called the "Rettungsgasse" (Rescue alley). It's there so the ambulance can get through as quickly as possible in case of an accident. So if there is traffic on the Autobahn an alley is always formed between the far left lane and the lane right next to it.

The rule is simple: everybody goes to the right, except the leftmost lane which goes to the left. As soon as traffic starts to slow down drivers should start to move to the sides.
The reasoning behind an emergency lane on the left side of the road is twofold: 1. onramps, where drivers might not expect emergency vehicles from behind; 2. trucks, which are usually driving on the slower (right) lanes and are not as maneuverable as the cars on the left lanes. Although there is usually a breakdown lane on the right side of the roadway this is often not really usable for emergency vehicles at high speed (because 1. it is usually narrower than a regular lane, it might not be available on bridges or in tunnels, or it might actually be occupied by broken down vehicles which cannot move out of the way).

It's not allowed to use the emergency lane with a vehicle, unless it's an emergency (police or ambulance on the way to an accident). The fine for using it without propper reason is 100€.

I've heard and said it quite a few times, and _for the most part,_ it does actually work out like that (whether the individual ones actually do respect each other or "just" act as if they do). Yeah, the prices at the rest stops on the Autobahn are pretty insane. If you're in no big hurry, I can really recommend leaving the Autobahn, and for example simply going to one of the truck stops that are usually right next to the exits. They have at least the same level of service and shopping opportunity, are significantly cheaper, and it only costs a little more time (just maybe don't go there to eat in the restaurant in the early evening hours when the actual truckers need to eat during what might just be a 9 hour sleeping break 😉)

any "Kleinwagen" can drive 100+ mph. Most cars in Germany can drive 150+ mph.
I was very surprised when I learned that Americans are not only not allowed to drive faster in most states, but that most cars can't drive as fast as the same car in Germany. As far as I know it's a bad fuel issue. The quality of gasoline in the USA is just one step above salad oil 😆

9:20 German traffic laws require all motorists to create an emergency vehicle passing lane between both driving lanes as soon as they approach and end up in a traffic jam on a highway or another multi-lane road outside the city limits. In case there are more than 2 driving lanes, the emergency vehicle passing lane has to be between the far left and the next lane

  • @YOLOJANER

So the thing with driving left at~ 9:29 is called „Rettungsgasse“ and it is for emergency vehicles. The law day’s basically: if the traffic on an Autobahn or Schnellstraße slows dow to like walk Speer you have to do a „Rettungsgasse“ (rescue path) when the street has two roads in a direction the cars on the left go as far they can left and the cars on the right go as far they can to the right but if there is a „ Pannenstreifen“(I really don’t know what it is named in English but it’s basically a extra line on the right for cars that have a Failure or can’t drive any more) than use that line only to like 1-2/4. if there are three or more lines in a direction you do this: the car‘s on the left line go as far they can to the left again but all other cars on the other lines go the right as far they can an do the thing with the „ Pannenstreifen“ again if needed so that you get a path between the left line and all others and we call that „ Rettungsgasse“.
If you don’t do that you lose your driver license for one or more month and have to pay a fine at 240€^(269,62$^) and get 2 or more points at Flensburg.
If you would like to ask more, I‘m a German Firefighter and can answer some questions for you and everyone :)

08:52 this huge gap is called "Rettungsgasse", literally emergency lane, meaning that in case of longer traffic jams especially due to accidents, emergency vehicles such as ambulances, police or firefighters are able to pass. It's always made up between the outer left and the other lanes, which means that if there are only 2 lanes, people in the right lane would drive to their maximum right while people on the left lane drive to their maximum left. With three lanes, people on the left lane go to their max left, the others to their max right.
Sadly there are always people getting it wrong, ignoring it or being idiots just driving through the Rettungsgasse, blocking it again for emergency.

The problem also is that Americans don't drive well, so it slows down everything: they rarely use their indicators, they pass other cars on the right side (!!!) and they stay on the fast lane (left), blocking the ones who want to go faster. It makes the whole thing much more dangerous too.

There is also a good samaritan law that requires you to stop and aid if you come across an accident. Love driving on the autobahn, hope you have a great trip.

Back in the early 90s I was in Germany and had rented a Saab Turbo 9000. I was in between Kaiserslautern and Frankfurt doing about 250kph (around 150mph) and was in the left lane passing everybody. All of a sudden I have headlights flashing at me. Some guy in a Maserati wanted to go by. Luckily, there was about a 3 mile break in traffic and I pulled over and the crazy Italian car went smoking by me. At 150mph you are going 2.5 miles per minute and I used up that three miles pulling over, getting passed, and pulling back into the left lane. The Maserati sped away- I was up to 290kph and he was leaving me in the dust. BEST EFFING DAY EVER!!!!!!!!
