Gramophone Restoration. His Master's Voice.

- Columbia Records, His Master's Voice Gramophone restoration. This gramophone was a gift from a friend of mine. According to my research, the engine of the device is 1959 production. Because the crank goes up at an angle. So I don't think the wood cover part is original. Also already made of plywood and amateurly cut. Even if the wooden box part is original, but i don't think it belongs to the this engine.
Kıymetli bir arkadaşımdan bana hediye gelen Sahibinin Sesi markalı bu gramofon, yaklaşık 15 yıldır bende. Benim için keyifli bir restorasyon ve yenileme süreci oldu.

If you dont move the arm back into right position, you are gonna have a swell vinyl grinder, and not a music player, needle is going the wrong way.
Thank you very much for your comments.
I used to repair gramaphon of those days it's really interesting job and enjoying work the important part is governed which is most delicate really I enjoyed it those days
I noticed that also.............A keen eye.
@@BennyCFD It's actually fundamental to all record players. They operate by a needle being dragged through a groove, not shoved through one like a plow. The failure to note the function of any record player is sort of frightening considering the subject of the video.
It's also permanently damaging to any modern vinyl record to be scratched with a steel needle used on gramophones. Huge difference in size.
You restored an indian fake machine made in the 1970s that Will forever sound terribly!!! And you are also playing that vynil on the wrong side, with probably less money you could have repaired an original portable machine! And probably also got some 78s to play on it with 100 times more quality! Collectors burn those machines and takes some good parts out of them
Thank you for your comment.
That’s not a real HMV Gramophone, it’s an Indian fake. The motor is out of an HMV Portable machine
Sir you are right
almost right the motor is of the type found in the HMV portables no 87 88 models but the motor here is a Russian version not surprising since the trade of Crap-O-Phones has also gone from India to Afghanistan and Pakistan in the last 10 years or so.
buying one of these and you might be funding the Taliban!
the ones from Dum-Dum Calcutta India all have new very bad quality motors at least this one is good for parts!
tino van der zwan phono cave! I didn’t know they were making them in Afganistahn now I knew it was some sort of EMI type Portable motor from the angle of the winding handle I wasn’t sure of the model
I would never buy such restored gramophone. It is ruined,, sorry!
Thank you for your comments.
This is a fake made in India in recent years. You will find dozens of them for sale on eBay for around 80 to 120 pounds. You can also find them being bought for hundreds of pounds from unscrupulous people who sell them as original.
They are made by taking the workings from a defunct Gramophone and building a new case around them. The angle of the winding handle on this one indicates that this motor came from a portable. Without that angle there would not be enough height on a portable to clear the surface the machine is sat on.
Gramophones did not have brass horns. The manufacturers quickly realised that brass on a Gramophone horn just made it sound tinny. Cheaper machines had tin plated steel, more expensive machines wood. Unfortunately these fakes are so common now that people believe the authentic sound should be tinny.
Keep the motor out of this one and bin the rest of it. Buy yourself a real one.
Thank you very much for your enlightening information and comments.

Well what do you expect on these old Machines some of them are over a 100 Years old
Even though this is definitely a fake gramophone, it does look to have some quality components in it. The motor could be out of a decent HMV portable, and the tonearm looks to be from a portable too.
I have the base unit from a much more modern similar fake. Mine looks much the same, but all the parts are recently made, including the motor and the quality is noticeably inferior
Sorry for the late reply. Thanks a lot for your comments.
I was a bit hesitant to point out that this gramophone is a fake made in India. They are taking parts of old gramophones and putting them in this box plus a new funnel to make it look older than it is. A friend of mine had bought an exact duplicate of this model and was very disappointed to find it was a fake. You can see that it has been made up of different parts because of the HMV badge and the Columbia speed indicator (different company). Still, great work.
@@andreashale1482 Yes, I think it would be a great disappointment to buy one of these and then find out it was a fake. Since my previous comment I have found another complete one which has a genuine Garrard motor, but not sure if any of the other components are genuine. Most of it is definitely fake. These fakes also tend to play poorly as they don't have decent soundboxes or tracking. I have tested quite a few different sounboxes on my channel and have a couple of the usual fake ones, and plan to test and dismantle these at some point.
As you mentioned, my friends fake sounded absolutely dreadful, whereas my HMV portable has an amazing sound and an incredible volume. I am in complete awe at those people, that could produce such sound just with purely mechanical means.
@@andreashale1482 The HMV 102...finest portable ever mae.
Unfortunately this is a fake, made in recent past in India...
I was wondering why all the screws and nuts looked so damn modern
@@kurtjakins6396 yeah. I've been repairing and restoring phonographs for years, but because of these fake ones, people have the misconception that they sound bad. They can actually sound incredibly good.
I thought so, it just didn't look right.
It's a good thing it was a repro. He screwed up any kind of antique value it had as soon as he removed the patina and refinished the case..... And he keeps using needle nose pliers on everything. USE PROPER TOOLS TO 'RESTORE'
@@Hofsan well as a phonograph restorer, patina doesnt really add to much value, as patina adds value when it's the main source of identification of age, such as with jewelry. But with phonographs, there are many other ways in which you can identify its authenticity. While original finish is desired, if something is refinished properly and accurately, it can still retain a lot of its value.
I've never seen somebody work so hard to restore a reproduction, that's tenacity! You probably made this thing better than it ever began. Most of those things didn't work right off the shelf with such a hodge-podge of parts from different machines. Good for you.
Thank you very much for your kind comments :)
As others have said, this is an Indian made fake. But OK as a decorative piece. You should place the tone arm on the opposite side of the record, by the way!
Thank you for your comments.
What a bodge up. This should be called how not to restore a gramophone. Just because you can wield a screw driver & a hammer (a lot of that going on) doesn't mean that you can restore things. He didn't take the spring out of the barrel & disassembled the motor without making sure that the spring was run down.
Chris Grant Thank you for your comments.
Absurd spectacle of errors. I have restored many actual Victrolas, and I believe that you should leave such things to skilled people who know how they should actually be played, at least.
Thank you for your comment.
This is brutalisation, not a restoration
Chrisov Thank you for your comment.

@@Restomaniac 🤣 🤣 excellent reply! Just found you 🐈 much, much love from South Africa
The diaphragm in the reproducer needs to be replaced. This one won't sound very good or loud. It's easy to find a new replacement.
Personally I would give it a bit more stain, and finish off with lacquer, but of course that's your decision. But besides that now all you need is to go out and get some really cool 78's, and a good stack of needles. An old bastard like that will keep the party going, even if a solarstorm knocks us back to the stoneage.
Thank you very much for your suggestions
WE happen to like the silence while you simply deconstruct and reconstruct. My wife finds it fascinating. the last 3 comments were from "experts", right??
Thank you very much :)
With all due respect but if you know how a Gramophono works, if you check your video, you will realize that you have just spoiled your Disk since I put the needle on the wrong side causing your disk to scratch. the needle is placed from the center to the right side not from the center to the left side because by the inclination of the needle instead of just caressing the disc and following the engraving on the acetate and catching the undulations made, you just put the needle in the opposite direction causing the tip instead of stroking the acetate to scratch and deform the engraving. Not everyone is a restorer, that is clear to me.
To buy a new disc and the parts that are damaged or broken are replaced in a restoration or a restoration is really done in which the pieces remain functional.
Yes you are right. Thanks for your comments.
You know how restore but you obvoulsy have no clue on how to use one of those. You're not supposed to play a vinyl LP on one of those, it will be ruined. Also you put the tonearm down on to the wrong side of the record, it will chew up the record even more like that.
Thank you so much. If you've just noticed, I'm saying that vinyl records will not be used in the relevant part of the video, but I am using it to satisfy my curiosity. I used it knowing it would be ruined. No problem for me.
You can play LP records somewhat. You have to sharpen the tip of the steel needle and The tonearm on the wrong side is for playing records backwards. how do you play the record backwards on a phonograph? well you have to spin the record the opposite way by hand.
Why why why did you strip it?? It ruined the finish and made the value drop over half Other than that great job
Enjoyed your video and gave it a Thumbs Up
Thank you very much for your comment. Yes, you are right. It actually looked nice, but it had brown paint inside. That's why I stripped it.
@@Restomaniac just get rid of the brown paint?
@@DaleDix
And, I wanted to see the wood
@@Restomaniac I would have only striped that then. Live and learn :)
Yeah I agree , when you stripped it it should have been completely done , could still see paint in the grooves and looked tacky ( so sorry ) , in this case you are not meant to see the wood underneath and if you do it has to be uniform and spotless , just my opinion. Oh and a store bought metal cleaner would work wonders on the horn .
the needle should go in the direction of travel, and not vice versa you cut the plate so
Thank you very much for your comment. Yes, you are right.
great detailed Restauration/repair I like it!
the only sad thing is the gramophone is a fake, not the usual India fake but one probably from Afghanistan India fakes have fake motors as well very bad repro's of the Garrard no 20 motor.
this one has an original motor of the type HMV used to make and use in the portable models 87 and 88 however this is a USSR Russian copy of such a motor from the 1940s to 60s thus I came to the conclusion that this is an afghani machine.
as Crap-O-Phones go this is a better one the soundbox is real the motor is real so the sound will be very much better than the usual India crapo, eh, that is, if you place the tone-arm on the opposite side of the record and use a 78rpm record.
also visit my channel to learn more about the wonderful world of antique gramophones/phonographs.
Thank you for your comment.
This would be considered the "Crosley Cruiser" of gramophones; a cheap knockoff of original 30's and 40's models. IMO a true, worthwhile restoration would be of something vintage, such as a 60's tube radio for instance. This would be a bit too modern for some experienced vintage/antique restorers.

It looks like the needle is on the wrong side of the spindle.
Yes or the platter is turning the wrong way. It's just carving a new groove?

@@Restomaniac Do you even Care?
In my humble opinion, you should have just restored the mechanism and left the horn and wood cabinet alone. The thing is old; it should look old. But I enjoyed watching the video and seeing how those old phonographs worked.
Thank you very much for your comment.
sadly this is a fake gramophone.
NEVER EVER use a normal record on a gramophon. That is a sacrilege. Only schellac has to be used on a gramophon. Specially if it is so well restored.
benerabilis Thank you for your comment. Yes you are right. Also record remained in scracth.
When playing, You placed the needle on the incorrect side of the turntable. The surface of the record needs to be rotating AWAY from the point of the needle. The way you are playing it will cause the record to be ruined due to the tip digging into the groove.
It certainly is not a restoration. Not even decent repair. Pity for the beautiful gramophone. / Kesinlikle bir restorasyon değil. İyi tamir bile etmedi. Güzel gramofon için yazık.

At least the reproduction ones use a cheap brass horn so we can all immediately tell they aren't genuine His Masters Voice
Next time squeeze the gramophone arm on the other side to avoid scratching the vinyl record and to make it sound better
The restorer seems to be not familiar with these machines. There are lot of mistakes in restoration besides the machine itself is not authentic.
Thank you for your comments.
Can't go wrong with a gramophone boasting both RCA and Columbia labels. I kept waiting for a shock from one of the amplifier's capacitors.
Thank you for your comment.
Great
Hillarious! So, if I put up a video that contains a REAL old gramophone, and let it play a REAL record - and as a bonus, put the needle down at the RIGHT side... Nobody would propaly see that video...
Great restoration! original or not (probably repro) its decorative!! looks Great!
Thank you so much :)
👋😊
Great Restoration! But! The sound box with needle is suppose to play from the right side not left. Pluss, It's for 78 RPM records not vinyl microgroove records.
Hmm... the wooden box looked better before "restauration". The colour is too bright and without high gloss varnish. I'm sorry, but I don't like the final result.
Unfortunately the whole machine is a reproduction, most likely made in India in recent years, the reason the winding handle points up is because the motor is taken from a portable gramophone, the rest of the parts are of modern production and unfortunately not meant to play records very well
Thank you for your comment.
You. Can’t play modern vinyl 78 records on a Wind up 78 player. You must use a modern 78 four or 3 speed record player with a turn over stylus

I know you've put a wrong record. The music was just sounding like a baby singing.
I have a big old one on these music players but when I put the needle down it slows down and stops... how do I fix this?
There must be a problem in the mechanism that reduces torque. It may be necessary to clean and re-lubricate.

The question was, the newer LP, the biggest one! Can you make them play on the good old His Masters Voice? Make a DIY?! ❤️👏🏻🙏🏻
What is it that makes the difference?
THANK YOU for answering!

@@louiseringsmose Hi louise, you would need a completely different arm to make that work. The speed would also need to be adjusted with some modification of the mechanism (not easy I think). Lastly, you will need electronic amplification of the sound of an LP. Hence you'll need an amp and speakers. No way around it I'm afraid. The best way to achieve it is to modify a record player to look a bit like a gramophone. Greetings from Belgium
I read about the company of His Master's Voice and read about Columbia Records Both say they never join companys. So I wonder if someone later add a speed controller to a His Master's Voice Gramophone
No. This is fake piece of junk.
Using those fake Indian machines are a good way to disect and learn about phonographs. They aren't worth $20 so if you brake it while playing with them, you didn't lose much. Practicing on an original would be a mistake unless it was really in bad shape. But you won't learn until your try.
Thank you for your comments.
I don't even know where to start here. The player is a reproduction. See this video: ua-cam.com/video/Eo8-aM0A9og/v-deo.html . No restorer in their right mind would do what happened here--jabbing and prying at things with cheap tools. Then the stripping and polishing work. The final laugh was putting the soundbox and stylus on the wrong side of the record. TNX for the laughs!
Thank you very much for your comments.
I would caution that in practice, it's not necessary to disassemble the motor as far as was done here. Just disassemble enough to thoroughly clean and lubricate the mechanism. Plus, I liked the patina on the horn before it was scrubbed off.
Thank you very much for your comments.

Good morning. I'm not a specialist, but I think you did a good job with the mechanical part of this machine. On the other hand, I'm sorry to say, the wooden crate is downright missed. No one at the time would have spent a lot of money, because it cost a lot, in something like that. The wood should be either waxed or varnished. Leaving the wood like that is a good mistake. You have to make up and redo the cash register. Also for the copper part you have to make it sparkling. That's how it was back then. When you do a restoration the goal is to make it as it was when it was made. The drawing of the wood should be covered with paint and varnished. I hope my comment did not offend you because that was not my intention.
Hello there. Sorry for my late reply. Thank you very much for all your comments. Happy new year :)

nice work, looks realy good.only csome recomandations, make sure you oil the leather of the break of the gouverner wheel, speedregulator, and also clean the spring that is in the spring housing and use new grease (I always use lithium grease) . than the speed will be much better and constant . also place the arm in the correct possition ( on the right side, not the backside) for the soundbox( where the needle is attached, you can use a drop parafinewax to seal the screw of the needle to the membrame complete airtight, this give an imroved sound quality .
