It’s the 10th of November 1944, near Morville-les-Vic, Normandy. The 761st Tank Battalion of the US Army is about to face serious action for the first time, against a reinforced German division. The 761st are known as the Black Panthers as they are composed entirely of Black American soldiers and NCOs. One of the men whose bravery stands out in the coming battles is 21-year old Sergeant Warren Gamaliel Harding Crecy - or ‘Harding’ to his friends. Ultimately this man's extreme bravery and grit in the face of danger resulted in him being recommended for the Medal of Honor.

you guys are semi right. There were African, Hispanic, Asian and Native Americans who were all put up for medals of honor. Some got them. Some didn't, at least not until much later. Yes it's a shame, but there's something else.
The same went with Irish, Jewish, Italian and German Americans. Basically everyone. In total, over 16 million people in the US alone served in WWII. over a million became casualties. 400,000+ dead and another 600,000 wounded.
And yet there are less than 500 medals of honor dished out for actions in WWII. Including those done well after the war.
The reason isn't as simple as it sounds. when the medal was initially devised and handed out during the civil war, it was kinda just handed out 'because'. But as it went on, the medal became less and less about actual grit and heroism, and more about politics and 'optics'. That right there is the reason why 'Chesty' Puller of the Marine corps had 5 Navy crosses and not a single medal of honor. Most of those actions were put up for medal of honors, but he was deemed 'bad for publicity'.
as the US's wars progressed, more and more medals of honor were only given out posthumously. As dead guys can be vetted easier and can't really do anything to mess up publicity afterwards. It's unfortunate that I have to say this, but alot of the MoH's given after Vietnam were for pomp and show, and the majority of the people and actions that deserved said medal, would never and will never get one.
There are alot of rules revolving around the MoH and unfortunately one is that it's "impossible" to upgrade from a 'lesser' medal to the MoH for the same action. This rule is often times the one they give us about why certain military personnel can no longer receive the MoH. But it's also disregarded when a politician wants to lay a political smokescreen and earn some 'street cred' among the veteran and military communities.
TLDR: There are a lot of good stories deserving of MoH's but because of it's more political implications since after the early 1900s, our best way of honoring these stories is keeping them alive by talking about the people behind the stories. Like Yarnhub does. They've done more for the heroes of past wars and conflicts, than any politician ever has.

When he was 12, he got cleaned up, bought some flowers and ice cream, and told the mother of his future wife that he would marry her when she turned 18. Nine years later, he did.
He was awarded a battlefield commission as a second lieutenant in May 1945. Several years later, in the Korean War, his tank was struck by a missile, gravely injuring him. He was awarded a Bronze Star and had gotten several Purple Hearts. He medically retired from the Army as Major. Total hero.

There was another Armored Force unit called 'Black Panthers' that exists to this day. The 69th Armor Regiment has a long history. The last Soldier from Detroit Michigan awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, SGT Dwight Hal Johnson was a Black Panther. The story of Dwight Johnson using every weapon available to him on that battlefield to defeat the enemy isn't a yarn. At what point do you decide to use a M3 grease gun as a club to beat an enemy soldier to death? Right after you ran it out of ammunition... Dwight Johnson died due to ill treatment of the wounds that he had received in the service of his country. Dwight Johnson's story should remind us all that there are debts we can never repay but also debts we owe that we can and should do everything we can to repay.

Those of you who wish to learn more about 761st Tank Battalion through books:
    - Hit Hard by David J. Williams (this is my personal fav due to the conversations being included with his men he had plus you can connect to the characters and understand easily. He was a white officer who trained the black tankers rigorously as a slap-in-the-face to the other officers who looked down on them).
    - Brothers in Arms by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, overview of the unit's history, personnel and the future
I have not read those yet but they're on my list:
    - Come Out Fighting: Epic Tale of the 761st Tank Battalion by Trezzvant Anderson
    - Patton's Panthers: African-American 761st Tank Battalion in WWII by Charles Sasser
    - The Black Panthers by Gina M. Dinicolo
"Everyone has their eyes on you and is expecting great things from you. Most of all your race is looking forward to your success. Don't let them down and damn you, don't let me down!"

@@grizzlies5238 I’m sure Yarnhub could explain the DDR much more effectively and quickly than school could, but that isn’t really what he covers. He covers more like mini action movie scenes from history.
