A tripel is always a blond beer. A double is always dark and a quadrupel is always dark. You can try any Belgian tripel, you'll always end up with a blond beer. Gulden Draak isn't a tripel, as said on beer advocate, because it's a dark beer. It's a Belgian (Flemish) strong, dark ale (like Adriaan Brouwer, Kwak, Satan Red, Satan Black, the dark versions of Gouden Carolus, Kasteel-beer and many others).
The Westmalle Tripel, when it was brewed for the first time, was the first Tripel in the world. So, it has been the standard ever since of what a Tripel should be like.

Why do they say on the beer description to leave it for some days before consuming it?

What about Gulden Draak Quadrupel? I thought that was light(er) in colour?

@@caves4458 Gulden Draak Quadrupel is a bit lighter than Gulden Draak, but it remains a dark beer.

@@purpledrank3152 It's the same as with wine, I guess. As soon as you drink a high quality drink (not Heineken or Bud) it's best to let it rest for a few days after you moved it. Then everything that makes the taste can mingle perfectly, so you can enjoy the fullness of the taste.

    Best beer in the world.
A lot going on with the flavours and has a smoothness (and when I first had it even a creaminess) that brings it all together.

😅Always fun to see someone trying the mother of all triples for the first time. Living 15 km from the Westmalle abbey sometimes makes me forget how special this beer is.

I don't know if it is me today and my pallet just isn't there or what but I can only give this one a 7.5/10. I bought 2 bottles of it though and will revisit. Cheers.

Westmalle Triple is an excellent beer. If you haven't tried the double, don't miss it: to me Westmalle Double is a perfect 10!

One of my all time favorite beers and my favorite Tripel, I have yet to try a better Tripel for my taste. Dubbels & Quads are dark, Tripels are golden. I don't know why, that's the way it is.

  • @RyanReschan

Is this your first Belgian tripel Simon? 'cause this beer is basically the standard for the style. In fact it might have been the first ever tripel. Most of the flavors are coming from the yeast but they also add a good amount of hops to this beer as well. This beer is world class.

    Very nice.
I'm drinking it for the first time and watching UA-cam videos on it.
I'm drinking it out of a Chimay snifter glass.
I had a bigger bottle with a champagne-like cap. I filled my glass and put the rest into the fridge for another Sunday.
    I agree with your review.

This is among my top 10 beers. However, I would rather have St Bernardus apt 12 Quad. Both are very expensive here in the USA. I also very much like Duvel which is a better value. Allagash in Maine also brews a very fine tripel. I had a case, but it took 3 years of aging to reach it's peak of flavor. But after that 3 years it was unbeatable.
