I had the same thing. I was *sure* it was heavy or even a lighter assault. Then big red said 20tonns. I actually paused and had to double take on the vid. 🫡
Ok, I love everything about this thing as it ticks so many of my boxes. One, its a Capellan mech. Suck it, you Davion shitheels. Two, COMBINED ARMS FREAKING FINALLY! Look, Battletech is inherently contradictory and stupid about its application of military theory and why things work, but something that is designed to move with battle armor (because if you can miniaturize your deadly weapons, do it) and work with infantry and tanks, hits the right buttons. Third, a twist on the utilitarian side of mech stuff. I love the concept of Sentinels, Urbanmechs, and other "B-side mechs." in giant stretches of territory, on freaking interstellar empires, this would be vital. Fourth, Omnimechs. This touches on point two. It has NEVER made sense for Omnimechs (particularly for the Clans) to cost so much more. Having universal, replaceable parts alleviates supply lines, not aggravates them. Particularly when that technology has been around for decades to centuries. Fifth...The A Config. HEAVY PPC ON A TINY MECH. Mechs as a weapon platform. Yes.
Look here, just because the greatness of House Davion causes you jealous Cappies to melt down, doesn’t mean you can run your mouth indiscriminately. I can't stop seeing a Locust MK II. Could be quite confusing for the enemy, seeing that mech as a Locust to find that it has much more firepower and uses quite different tactics.
The config with a HPPC is kind of hilarious. "Hey I want a gun that Weighs half as much as my mech, also shove it on the arm because what is balance anyways."
It's more or less how I designed the one I thought up for a Dieselpunk story I was working on. The lack of arms is a weakness, but it's also a practical design choice to prevent making a machine overly complicated.
Somehow the pronunciation of the Gùn isn't the deadliest thing about it. Small, cheap mechs seem ideal for making use of omnipod tech and Endo-Steel frames as you can make use of economy of scale in supporting them. Far easier to supply en mass planet-side than mechs five times their weight and cost, though transporting a lot of them is going to eat up dropship space and limit frontline use. Acting as a tank/infantry support really lets it shine in filling in any gap on the fly thanks to multiple configurations, and of course, it's got that traditional Capellan electronic warfare shine to it as well. Just plop on the parts you need and you've got a quick version of one of those 'oh god why does it have an AC/20' Urbanmechs with the Heavy PPC, or a Raven replacement. Just need to have the parts on-hand to outfit them, which seems a great use for local garrison storage.
It’s a bold move in the opposite direction that Omnimechs have traditionally taken as far as design cues are concerned in the IS, with modern omnis mostly being expensive flagship assault or heavy mechs, or recon/trooper mediums. Only time will tell if the CC can maintain a healthy enough industry to make this Omni-garrison trooper a success.
It's weird to me that infantry support mechs aren't more common. So many border worlds hardly have any 'mechs at all, and urban combat is so dangerous for most, you'd think it would be great to get something light and relatively cheap for easy superiority *without* it being AT / basement bomb fodder. That's one thing I'm loving about the new era. Combined arms FTW.
One of the big problems with infantry support mechs in the succession wars this is that the only infantry they would support are standard infantry. Then after the invasion era only House Liao was interested in the concept because Battle armor fit well with large Infantry formations garrisoning many worlds the tiny House military could not assign notable mech forces other than an Urbanmech or two. Then as the technology came about they developed the Fa Shih battle armor to ride on mechs with their Mag-clamps but really no one else even bothered as they could just try and use transport vehicles and standard light and medium mech support, or just have a simple transport system with some of their local Omni-mechs, even though they would not support the Battle armor afterword. Once again House Liao led with using a purpose built 20 ton Omni out of a need for the Battle armor more than an expensive lance of front line Omni-mechs. For House Liao this is just a natural progression to get more use out of their incredibly poor military units that will often be centered around Infantry of all types.
I have to wonder if bumping the design up to 25 tons would have allieviated some of its weight limit issues without making it too much more expensive. A couple more tons of armor is a big deal for such a small light mech, especially one that moves at the speed of a heavy mech of the same time period.
Didn't see the accent and just saw a mech I assumed was named the 'gun'. And I then in short order fell in love, had my heart broken, and then... came around because this is one nifty little guy.

The Gùn is a superbly-armed and equipped light 'Mech in all its configurations, but it's as slow as a Hornet, can't jump, and has even less armor. As infantry support it can do its job very well, but I do not expect to hold up if it's ever pushed into frontline service against anything near a peer foe-while it can hit hard and the B's electronics package is fantastic, even a Locust should be able to hunt down and kill it. Its small cockpit and XL gyro also make it harder to pilot and easier to disable, not good to deal with. Except with some very clever teamwork, if, say, Lyrans send Commandos and Wolfhounds after the Gùns I'd expect a massacre, and not in the CCAF's favor.
It seems to be a modified Locust frame. An Omni-Locust is a solid basis for a design. You can see this with the Fire Falcon, which in many ways is the Clan take on the Omni-Locust idea, just based on the Locust IIC instead of the original LCT series

In their very specific, niche role, the mech is good. Outside of that role, it is a target for even older machines, as a Succession Wars Centurion armed with an AC/20 destroyed four of them alone. Granted the MechWarrior was a former knight of the Republic, still, as said at the beginning of the video, the most cutting edge, or even just more advanced, doesn't equal greatest.
@@colbyboucher6391 Yes, it is niche, just like the Succession Wars Rifleman. Great in its designed role, somewhat adequate to decent (usually depending on the pilot) in others.

Oh-ho-ho-ho! Never heard of this one before, but it sounds like my kinda ride! I honestly think that lights benefit most from omnipods, due to their limited weight options. I like this one a lot. Speed’s an issue, but there’s way around that if you’re smart and aware of that limitation, I reckon.

I don't know if you've noticed yet but most people have a distinctive almost hatred for the dark age because of various stupid things they apparently tried to do the way they talk about it
House LIao was my house, way back in the beginning, because all of the others were taken. Have not played since then, late 80s and early 90s so there is so much new stuff to wrap my head around. I'm in New Zealand so we're on the back end of everything. There were mentions of the Clans coming at the end, but after high school all of my mates had moved on so there was no-one to play, so no need to keep with it on a limited income.
I like to think this mech came about like some dudes are smoking and just hanging in their garage out and the Chancellor just kicks down the door with a bag of money and body guards and throws the money at them and screams I want a omni mech and one of them says...uhhhh we got a locust does that count and he just screams you Herd me and storms back out
Thanks! It is just a very different approach though, I think Tex does great work. :) I like taking it a bit more seriously, for the most part. There are still a few tongue-in-cheek videos like the Urbanmech and the Hoplite, but overall I approach things like this.
House Liao knew exactly what they want when they make the Gun. If they wanted speed and more armor, an XL engine would have gotten them that. But instead the GUN uses a standard engine. And it is not like House Liao lacks money either (look at ALL those XL engine heavies and assaults Lao Hu, Thunder, Yu Huang etc). But standard engine mechs are actually a lot more durable, so the 3.5 ton armor might be deceptive and not to mention a lot easier to maintain. Especially if the mech is attached to an infantry unit or planetary garrisons which may not have the best tech support.
Nice looking upgraded locust Hope you do a video on the Gambit and the havoc those 2 are my favorite dark age era light mechs And in fact are 2 of my alternate favorite mix of all eras and weights
I'm trying to be sparing as I begin to collect some post-3080 Mechs, since I have so many from previous eras already, but a Gun will almost certainly be among them. I love it's look, almost like a mini Argus. Though let's be honest, that's what the original Argus mini is already.
I saw the accenting on the "u" and I knew the mech couldn't have been called "The GUN", but that's what I thought when I first saw the thumbnail. And I was convinced I was looking at a Locust 1E.
So, the capellans made what is effectively an oversized locust, called it "gun" but spelled diffefently, and noone is meme-ing on it?! Seriously, this thing got potential!
Hm, was going to suggest it looks a lot like a tiny rifleman, but after a second look it looks IMHO more like a Locust with different arms/weapons. And gee, with ARTILLERY support they took out some industrial mechs, vehicles and infantry? How wonderful! ;) ROFL: "total liberation" at the cost of total enslavement. . . Yeap.
So when you said infantry support mech I got to thinking, are infantry bays restricted to vehicles? The tech manual doesn't seem to specify that I've seen any how.

It literally uses a modified Locust frame. They jsut turned it from a scout into a mobile infantry support gun.
It seems to be a modified Locust frame. An Omni-Locust is a solid basis for a design. You can see this with the Fire Falcon, which in many ways is the Clan take on the Omni-Locust idea, just based on the Locust IIC instead of the original LCT series
The Chancellor approves of your attention to detail, citizen! Great Video as always, Red.
Thank you for your labor sir we love mechs
After watching this video, I'm getting the three versions of the mech! Only thing left is to decide whether to paint them in FWL, or Gray Death Legion colors!
can't believe the capellans of all people actually made the Urbanmech good
The Urbanmech needed no improvement. NAY! The Urbanmech is perfection and if one falls it has been failed by it's pilot, not the other way around. The Urbies are not merely "good" there're GREEEAT!!!
Nyet, Urbanmech is fine.
the urbanmech was made in capella
love the coverage of modern mechs. Keep it up
Great to see BT UA-cam channel be listening more often. Also I am the one running the Sunrise Table Top Showdown
How've you been Curtis?
@Big Red 40k I been good great work on the channel keep it up. So you play ghe game could we possibly see you at the event in May
@@curtisschwabe4416 Unlikely, I actually work 7 days a week sadly. I have a few goals I want to meet for the channel before I start loosening up, but atm. I just work. I wish I had more time just to play the game even, as I'm rusty as hell at the moment, but it's just what it is.
@Big Red 40k well keep up the good work if you could help me a little bit be great if I could get a shout out for the Tournament. In return I can put your logo and link to your channel on my website to let people click on your channel
Hmm... ten tons of pod space. Imagine a mini-Swayback, with eight freakin' medium lasers plus two 'extra' double heat sinks for almost the same effective cooling.
I'm not sure it would live long, but man~, what a meat grinder while in that fight.
I like to see light mechs that can be hard hitting. Almost as if it's saying, "How do you like that?" before scampering off lol.
Thank you for taking the extra time to hunt down and include all of the extra links in the description!
Love this design, Locust with big gun! And Apple still exists in the future?! I bet that targeting computing has a million dongles handing out of proprietary ports.
Love how the core frame bares a resemblance to a locust just with beefed up shoulders and weapon arms.
Jokers neutral special!
Also is this what a Urbie grows into if you leave it out in the rain and on fertile soil for a couple centuries?
In their very specific, niche role, the mech is good. Outside of that role, it is a target for even older machines, as a Succession Wars Centurion armed with an AC/20 destroyed four of them alone. Granted the MechWarrior was a former knight of the Republic, still, as said at the beginning of the video, the most cutting edge, or even just more advanced, doesn't equal greatest.
Is it a niche role, or is it actually the workhorse of all the boring smaller engagements we don't hear about?
@@colbyboucher6391 Yes, it is niche, just like the Succession Wars Rifleman. Great in its designed role, somewhat adequate to decent (usually depending on the pilot) in others.
This video just got me to buy this off ironwinds. Damn/thank you for inspiring to collect more mechs!
I'd love to be in the board room when someone decided to name the new mech Gùn. That name feels like it's getting away with far more than it should.
Also, if you're taking requests. I'd love to know more about the weapons of the IlClan/Dark Ages era, since so many of these things are new and cool.
Frigging love these things , I own 4 I take them all the time
From a distance, it really looks a Locust huffing the Big Juice.
Nice light mech.
Form and function. What more could you want in a battlemech?
a wet bar
I LOVE THE LOOK OF THIS MECH IT FALLS UN MY TOP 5 FAVORITES
thisn is one of the models i am not knowledged in at all. picture me very intrigued sir
I'm glad!
@@BigRed40TECH the mech is pretty amazing. Like an omnitech urbanmech. No need for banzai charges if you can take anything you need and not swarm ac20 zergrush.
I'm unsure what I am to take from this based military tech point. 40k kinda makes me favor the urbanmech way. I'll be honest. 🫡
@@wiaf8937 Urbanmechs are pretty not great imo. lol
@@BigRed40TECH in the tabletop? I was referring to lore. Wasn't it amaris who used swarms of urbanmechs as a last resort kinda weapon? Im pretty sure Tex spoke about it in one of the lectures :D
@@wiaf8937 I don't think the Urbanmech is very good in tabletop, or really anywhere else lol
Forebrain: okay, look. I know. I know what it looks like... But it's pronounced Gwyn.
Monkey Brain: GUN. GUN. GUN. GUN.
Forebrain: whatever. I tried.
This sounds like the modern day Stryker MGS, to be replaced by the MPF. Both are for infantry suppport.
Unveiling the prototype to stockholders: Presenting the Gnu! Wait that's not right.
Looks like the is cutting out a niche for himself by covering Dark Age equipment before most in the community.
I cover all different eras. I cover Dark Age stuff too inbetween TRO entries to get some of it covered, otherwise it'd be years before I talked about it.
I don't know if you've noticed yet but most people have a distinctive almost hatred for the dark age because of various stupid things they apparently tried to do the way they talk about it
@@BigRed40TECH Yeah but you’re pretty much the biggest one that goes beyond the Civil War.
@@robrib2682 I've had people shout this at me, yes.
@@MultiKbarry I just cover a ton of stuff. I don't really limit my coverage to one era, that's all. lol
I'm more surprised someone else knows about this thing and infantry support mechs.
I am not surprised that the people who invented the AC 20 urbie have a mech that is named this xD
A mech I knew little about but now rather like! Must get myself a Liao lance in the future🤔
Looks kinda like a inner sphere version of the black lanner
Poor man's black lanner lmao (inner sphere still hasn't discovered aerodynamics it seems + kapellan joke)
The Black Lanner is very much a different design principal lol
A mini Black Lanner at best ...better a Fire Moth for me.....
They have completely different architecture and role. The only thing comparable is reverse joint legs and the right arm.
Wow, so it is basically a better Urbanmech. I love it already!
Wait... did you say heavy ppc on a 20 ton mech?
Yes
House LIao was my house, way back in the beginning, because all of the others were taken.
Have not played since then, late 80s and early 90s so there is so much new stuff to wrap my head around. I'm in New Zealand so we're on the back end of everything. There were mentions of the Clans coming at the end, but after high school all of my mates had moved on so there was no-one to play, so no need to keep with it on a limited income.
Yea mate, I feel that. It's one reason why I'd not want to move to NZ, despite being a dual citizen. It's just got such minimal access to things. :\
I like to think this mech came about like some dudes are smoking and just hanging in their garage out and the Chancellor just kicks down the door with a bag of money and body guards and throws the money at them and screams I want a omni mech and one of them says...uhhhh we got a locust does that count and he just screams you Herd me and storms back out
Capellan had to make do with what they had for so long when they able to produce new ones they tend to be pretty effective.
The committee couldn't agree on a name so, gun.
Good video, four out of five 😊
I like this narrative style so much more than Tex and his Dad Jokes Legion. Keep it up!
Thanks! It is just a very different approach though, I think Tex does great work. :)
I like taking it a bit more seriously, for the most part.
Thank you, Red!
Welcome!
Who needs courage when you have a GÙN?
It is the battle armor taxi of Doom!
Liao making good mechs and sound military choices? This new era is interesting
Liao is basically the most powerful House in the Dark Age.
@@BigRed40TECH wow they really changed Liao from a joke to a super power
Nice looking upgraded locust Hope you do a video on the Gambit and the havoc those 2 are my favorite dark age era light mechs And in fact are 2 of my alternate favorite mix of all eras and weights
was expecting a 120 light engine to be honest and light ferro too, huh
I'm trying to be sparing as I begin to collect some post-3080 Mechs, since I have so many from previous eras already, but a Gun will almost certainly be among them. I love it's look, almost like a mini Argus. Though let's be honest, that's what the original Argus mini is already.
I want 4 of them tbh. 1 of the electronic ones, 1 of the heavy ppc ones, and 2 of the standard plasma rifle ones.
The minis link is... a nice touch. Would be an excellent advert system for the intended market of btech minis, now that i think about it
It would be lol
I include it just because people will otherwise ask where they can get it a lot of the time. It's just easier this way :)
Imagine mounting a Heavy PPC on a 20 ton mech. Dark Age stuff is wild.
Ah, the mighty LOLcust (I mean Locust with Heavy PPC, which Gun variant A matches very well). :D
I'm not to up-to-date on ilclan, but did Liao make a slower, musclier, omnimech locust?
Interesting little guy. Here's hoping many of them make grist for the mill as they probe the Unnamed Empire.
It's a Flea more than a Locust to be fair.
@@BigRed40TECH yeah.
Looks almost like an energy focused, miniature Argus. I kinda like.
Considering I can only spell gun on my American keyboard, I believe the name suits it well considering it looks like a gun on legs pretty cool.
I deploy Gun, prepare to meet Blake!
It's like a light Black Lanner with neither the boom or the zoom.
Not a bad little mech. Darn thing can be an infantryman’s worse nightmare or a decent ambush scout. Not bad cappellans not bad at all.
"and if that don't work, use more gun" - Tauren concordat wisdom
I like this mech because I know exactly what to expect from its name. Gun. Maybe even 2.
It seems like a reasonable build.
I LOVE the Gun.
